YOGA STUDIO
This yoga stu io has one zone. On the front panel of the CSM‐21 mixer, there are two sets of EQ controls: one that affects the
music, an another that affects the mic. This allows the instructor to EQ each type of au io source in epen ently. For example,
turning up ‘Treble’ in the ‘Mic EQ’ section will a intelligibility to the soun of the instructor’s voice without affecting the music.
As the instructor speaks into her mic, the CSM‐21 automatically turns own—or “ ucks”—the music. On the CSM‐21 front panel,
there are two important controls that affect the ucking behavior. ‘Trigger sensitivity’ etermines how strong the mic signal
nee s to be in or er for the music to start turning own. ‘Ducking Depth’ etermines how quiet the music gets. In this case,
‘Ducking Depth’ is set closer to OFF (approximately the 9 o’clock position), which results in the music being turne own only
slightly as the instructor speaks. This slight re uction in music level allows the stu ents to hear the instructor’s voice more
clearly, while still preserving the moo create by the music. ‘Page Assign’ pins ensure compatibility with microphones equippe
with a contact closure for muting the mic. Since the wireless mic oes not have a contact closure, the ‘Page Assign’ pins are
simply shorte together for proper operation. The ‘Select’ knob is set to 1 (to select the CD player), an the ‘Level’ an ‘Mic’
knobs are use by the instructor to a just in epen ently the level of the music an her voice, respectively. The CSM‐21's
‘Stereo/Mono’ button is set to STEREO, sen ing true stereo au io to a pair of portable powere lou speakers. As an a e
benefit, the entire system can be ma e portable by installing the rack‐mount gear into a 3U roa case.

The JBL Commercial CS (Commercial Solutions) Series consists of paging microphones (CSPM), mixers (CSM), remotes (CSR),
amplifiers (CSA), transformers (CST), an speakers (CSS)—all esigne to work optimally with one another as a true system
solution. However, CS Series evices can still be use in systems containing pro ucts outsi e the CS family. This Yoga Stu io
application gui e serves as an example of such a system.

COFFEE SHOP
This small coffee shop has one zone. Employees use the CSR‐2SV remote to a just volume an to select Satellite Music or their
own MP3 player as the source. Employees make announcements by pressing an hol ing the button on the CSPM‐1 paging mic
while they speak into it. The CSM‐21 mixer automatically ucks the music uring announcements. The CSM‐21‘s ‘Page Assign’
pins ensure compatibility with microphones that contain a contact closure for muting the mic. Since the CSPM‐1 has an au io
mute switch an not a contact closure, the ‘Page Assign’ pins are simply shorte together for proper operation. The CSM‐21's
LevelGuard™ feature keeps the volume within an optimal range an AutoWarmth™ automatically a justs to ensure full high‐
fi elity soun at all volume levels. The buil ing’s fire alarm contains a normally open (NO) relay, which is connecte to the ‘Music
Mute’ pins on the CSM‐21. Detection of smoke causes the relay to close, which in turn causes the CSM‐21 to mute the music
imme iately. The mic is unaffecte by the ‘Music Mute’ functionality, an employees can therefore use the CSPM‐1 to make
announcements uring the alarm state if necessary. As a precaution against employees acci entally turning the mic volume
own too far, the ‘Mic Minimum’ control on the CSM‐21 front panel is set fully clockwise. This effectively limits the range of the
‘Mic’ level knob from ‐10 B to 0 B (i.e. the mic can’t be turne own past ‐10 B). True stereo au io is sent to a single pair of
wall‐mounte CSS‐1S/T speakers in 8 ohm irect mo e, which are powere by a CSA‐2120 amplifier.

This restaurant has two zones—a ining area an a bar. Installe at the receptionist po ium is a CSR‐V remote that allows
employees to a just volume for the ining area. Installe behin the bar is a CSR‐3SV remote that allows employees to a just
volume for the bar an to select Jukebox, TV au io, or Satellite Music as the source for the bar. Within the ‘Zone 1’ section of the
CSM‐32 mixer’s front panel, the ‘Source 1 Priority’ button is set to ON, an the ‘Select’ knob is set to 3. (NOTE: see page 8 for a
front panel view of the CSM‐32). This causes Satellite Music to be the efault source for the ining area, an when a patron pays
to hear her favorite song on the Jukebox, that song automatically overri es the Satellite Music au io in the ining area. The
CSM‐32’s internal jumper cap has been remove , which causes the ‘Iso Aux Out’ channel to receive source 3 invariably*.
Therefore, callers to the restaurant will hear the Satellite Music player when they’re put on hol . Employees make
announcements by first selecting the esire zone(s) an then pressing an hol ing the PTT button on the CSPM‐2 paging mic
while they speak into it. The CSM‐32 automatically ucks the music uring announcements in the zone(s) being page . The
buil ing’s fire alarm contains a normally open (NO) relay an a line‐level au io output for playback of alarm tones an pre‐
recor e messages. When the relay closes an /or the fire alarm sen s au io, the CSM‐32 will mute the music an also route the
fire alarm’s au io (if present) to both zones. Mono‐summe au io is sent to istribute ceiling speakers in both zones, which are
powere by a CSA‐2120 amplifier an CST‐2120 tranformer. Low cost CSS‐8004 speakers are use in the ining area, an higher
performance CSS‐8008 speakers are use at the bar.
* If the internal jumper cap is left installe (the factory efault), the ‘Iso Aux Out’ channel receives whichever source is selecte in Zone 1.

It is possible to “clip” the amplifier signal if, for example, the receptionist were to yell
into the mic. Not only oes clipping soun ba , it can amage the high‐frequency
rivers in speakers. To avoi clipping the amplifier signal, the CSA‐2120's built‐in limiter
is turne ON. Also, strong low‐frequency signals (such as breath pops an roppe
microphones) can cause serious amage to speakers in a 70V or 100V istribute
system by saturating the transformer. To avoi transformer saturation, the CSA‐2120's
built‐in 70 Hz high‐pass filter is turne ON. This high‐pass filter must be enable when
using the CST‐2120 to rive istribute speakers*. The CSA‐2120’s limiter an high‐pass
functionality is configure using DIP switches on the rear panel.
* Both CSM mixer mo els offer a 125 Hz high‐pass filter (which is turne ON/OFF by the rear‐panel button
labele “XOVR”). This gives the installer two high‐pass filters in the signal chain from which to choose. To
optimize the performance of any of the four CSS speaker mo els, use only the 70 Hz high‐pass filter in the
CSA‐2120. The 125 Hz high‐pass filter in the CSM can safely be turne OFF (the ‘Out’ position) unless “less
bass” is esire .

This retail store has four au io zones: Chil ren’s Dept., Men’s Dept., Women’s Dept., an Break Room. Since four in epen ent
output zones are require , two CSM‐32 mixers are linke together via their link ports. Linking allows multiple mixers to share the
same input source, eliminating the nee for Y‐cables. Therefore, two linke CSM‐32‘s can be thought of as one CSM‐32 with
three source inputs an four total output zones. Installe in the Break Room is a CSR‐3SV remote, which allows employees to
a just volume an to select a music source to hear while they’re on break. Volume control an source selection for the three
other zones is accomplishe using the front panel controls on the CSM‐32‘s, which are locate in the manager’s office—safe
from unwante tampering. Locate in the checkout area is a CSPM‐4 paging mic, which allows employees to make
announcements by first selecting the esire zone(s) an then pressing an hol ing the PTT button while they speak into the
mic. Mono‐summe au io is sent to istribute ceiling speakers in all zones, which are powere by CSA‐2120 amplifiers an CST‐
2120 tranformers. High performance CSS‐8018 speakers are use in the public zones, while low cost CSS‐8004 speakers are use
