Operating instructions for
Hydrant shortening set
Order No. 490K
1. Intended use
With the hydrant shortening set, Hawle freeflow underground hydrants can be adapted to the desired pipe cover
depth on site. In addition to the operating instructions, the applicable standards and regulations, accident pre-
vention regulations and the regulations of the employers‘ liability insurance associations must be observed and
adhered to in both installations.
2. Machine description
The shortening set, consisting of grip ring, seal carrier and coupling plate, enables the hydrant to be shortened later,
even when installed. By screwing to the coupling plate, the grip ring is friction-locked to the standpipe.
3. Assembly
Initial situation! Bring the hydrant in-
to a depressurized operating state.
The lowest shortening height is 20
cm above the upper edge of the gear
unit housing (see dimension arrow).
Remove dog clutch and dirt seal. Loosen the clamping screw on
the operation square cap. Remo-
ve operation square cap and pro-
tection cap.
Shorten and deburr the standpi-
pe, PP pipe and square pipe by
the same amount.
Remove coupling plate.
Slide the new coupling plate onto
the standpipe and PP pipe.
Spread the grip ring open and
slide it onto the standpipe.
Press the seal carrier onto the
standpipe as far as it will go using
manual pressure.
Push the grip ring back onto the
seal carrier as far as it will go.
Insert the dirt seal into the seal
carrier
Pull the coupling plate upwards
and screw it together with the dog
clutch. The tightening torque of
100 Nm must be observed.
Mount the protection cap in the
PP pipe.
Place operating square on square
pipe and fix with clamping screw.

4. Service and maintenance
The shortening set for Hawle freeflow underground hydrants is maintenance-free.
5. Commissioning and pressure testing
• Open cover
• Mount hydrant standpipe according to DIN 14375-1
• Extend hydrant standpipe with hose
• Lay the hose in such a way that water is safely drained off
• Slowly open hydrant
• Perform pressure testing as visual inspection at operating pressure
• Perform a function test by completely opening and then closing the hydrant
• After closing the hydrant, dismantle the standpipe and hose line
• Check whether hydrant drains completely
