Instruction Manual for QuickSet
The QuickSet is a peripheral device for connecting to the Time Code Generators ZZG5 and ZZG6 of HKW-
Elektronik GmbH. Its purpose is to store complex settings of the generator and to recall these settings simply on a
single key press. Because of the simply handling the QuickSet is especially applicable for using in manufactoring
environments for testing of units under test with different signal parameters.
1. Layout and Connection of the QuickSet
The QuickSet must be connected to the RJ45-GPS-connector of the time code generator ZZG5/ZZG6 using a normal
straight through (uncrossed) network cable. On the topside of the QuickSet four buttons and four light-emitting
diodes (LED) are mounted. Four additional buttons and four additional LEDs can be connected to the D-Sub-
Connector mounted at the side of the QuickSet. Each button recalls a determined complex setting of the time code
generator out of the internal QuickSet Memory and transmits this setting to the generator. The corresponding LED
identifies the latest performed setting. So, using 8 buttons and 8 LEDs, 8 different settings of the generator are
storable and recallable. Powering of the QuickSet with 12 V dc is performed via the network cable out of the
generator ZZG5/ZZG6.
2. Preparing the ZZG5/ZZG6
- firmware necessary for the ZZG5/ZZG6: 1.26 R
If a firmware other than 1.26R (for example 1.26 without "R", or a lower version) is contained, a software update is
necessary. For the ZZG5 only the manufacturer of the ZZG5 can update the software due to the lack of the USB
interface. Updating the firmware of the ZZG6 is very simple, using the USB interface.
For connecting the QuickSet to the time code generator, some special settings are required for the correct function of
the Quickset:
- Menu GPS: Sync msec must be "Off"
- Menu Antenna Factor: must be "Off"
- Output voltage level display must not be in dB-units but in absolute voltage units
- The test signal menu of the ZZG5/ZZG6 must not be chosen.
The last condition is automatically given after turning on the generator. The other settings are to be executed only
once because the ZZG5/ZZG6 storage of settings is nonvolatile.
The Quickset is to be connected to the generator using a network cable.
3. Operation of the Quickset
For protection against accidental overwriting of the memory contents there are several operating modes
implemented, which are determined after turning on the generator or after connecting the QuickSet to the generator.
By simply turning on the generator or connecting the QuickSet to the generator the QuickSet always operates in
normal mode. In normal mode changing of the memory contents is not possible. For changing the memory contents
another operating mode must be chosen by pressing a determined button while turning on the generator or
connecting the Quickset. The other operatimg modes are the so-called storage modes. There are two storage modes,
one including setting of time, and the other without storing the time. Sometimes it is necessary to change signal
parameters only, but the time of the generator must be kept. In other cases it is necessary to start the generator always
with the same well defined time. For this reason there exist two storage modes, which include or exclude the time
setting.

1. Normal Mode
After connecting the QuickSet to the generator or turning on the generator all LEDs flash for a short moment. By
pressing each of the buttons a special complex setup of the generator can be performed. The corresponding LED
lights up and after releasing the button the settings will be transmitted to the generator. Finally, after the successful
transmission, all LEDs flash for a short moment. In normal mode the settings cannot be changed. For this reason they
are also protected against accidental overwriting.
2. Storage Mode including the Time
This storage mode can be achieved by pressing and holding button 1 during turning on the generator or connecting
the Quickset. Immediately after lighting up all LEDs this operating mode is achieved and the button can be released
again. All LEDs remain lighting until a further operation (pressing a button) is performed. If a specific setup of the
generator should be attached to a specific button at first the generator must be set up according to the desired setup.
Thereafter the desired button must be pressed and hold until all LEDs light up for one second. Now this button can
be released and from now on a short press of this button uploads the settings into the generator. The storage
operation can be repeated as often as one likes.
3. Storage Mode excluding the Time
For storing settings of the generator which keep the time, the storage mode excluding the time must be chosen. This
storage mode can be achieved by pressing and holding button 2 while turning on the generator or connecting the
QuickSet. As soon as all LEDs light up this storage mode is achived. Storing and recalling of generator settings in
this mode is similar to the storage mode including the time (see above), except that the current time of the generator
is disregarded.
4. External Connections
There are four LEDs and four buttons which can be connected to the QuickSet via the 9-Pin D-Sub connector. The
LEDs are driven from a 3.6 Volt source via a pnp transistor and a resistor of 470 Ohm. LEDs and buttons have to be
connected between their dedicated pin and ground. The button pins have an internal pull up resistor to 5 V of 10
kOhm. The assignment of the D-Sub pins is as follows:
Pin1: gnd
Pin2: LED5
Pin3: LED6
Pin4: LED7
Pin5: LED8
Pin6: Button5
Pin7: Button6
Pin8: Button7
Pin9: Button8
5. Brief Instruction and Example
Preparation of the generator:
- Firmware 1.26 R
- GPS: Sync msec Off
- Antenna Factor: Off
- dB-display off: position the cursor under the "d" of "dB" and then press "+" or "-"
Following settings are to be stored in the QuickSet for example:

Perform following steps:
1. Press and hold button 1, turn on generator or reconnect the QuickSet, all LEDs light up, release button
2. Setup parameters for button 1 at the generator
3. Press and hold button 1 until all LEDs light up for one second
4. Setup parameters for button 2 at the generator
5. Press and hold button 2 until all LEDs light up for one second
6. Turn off generator or disconnect QuickSet
7. Press and hold button 2, turn on generator or reconnect the QuickSet, all LEDs light up, release button
8. Setup parameters for button 3 at the generator
9. Press and hold button 3 until all LEDs light up for one second
10. Setup parameters for button 4 at the generator
11. Press and hold button 3 until all LEDs light up for one second
12. optional: Press buttons 1 to 4 shortly to check the correct operation of the generator
13. Turn off and on generator or disconnect and reconnect QuickSet while not pressing any button
From now on the QuickSet is prepared according the table above and is protected against accidental overwriting or
changing the memory contents.
6. Trouble Shooting
- QuickSet doesn't do anything, all LEDs remain dark all the time
Be sure the generator ZZG5/ZZG6 is powered.
Be sure you are using a straight through network cable, not a crossed cable.
- While turning on the ZZG5/ZZG6 the LEDs flash but the settings cannot be sent to the ZZG5/ZZG6. After pressing
and releasing a button the LEDs do not flash finally.
Ensure the generator is equipped with firmware 1.26R.
Ensure the GPS setting of the ZZG5/ZZG6 is "Sync msec: Off"
- QuickSet doesn't store settings. After pressing and holding a button the LEDs do not light up for one second finally.
Ensure the generator is equipped with firmware 1.26R.
Ensure the GPS setting of the ZZG5/ZZG6 is "Sync msec: Off"
Ensure you have pressed button 1 or button 2 while turning on the generator or connecting the QuickSet for entering
one of the storage modes.
- QuickSet seems to be working but the generator output voltage level always remains the same.
Ensure the ZZG5/ZZG6 doesn't diplay the output voltage in dB-units. Turn off the dB-display (see above).
