HoMedics Tri-Fitness SC-560 User manual

How the Tri-Fitness Body Fat Analyzer and Scale Works:
This instrument uses BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis). BIA is one of the most
accurate methods of measuring body fat and total body water. It sends a harmless
signal through the fat and muscle in your body. This method calculates your personal
weight, body fat, body water and daily calorie requirement simultaneously, thus
giving you a more accurate reading of your overall health and fitness.
Why it is Important to Measure Your Body Fat?
Body fat is a vital measure of your overall health and fitness. Research has shown
that healthy body fat levels can help reduce your risk of developing serious health
related problems, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and
diabetes.
The goal in proper weight loss should be to increase lean muscle mass (which is the
shape and contour of your body) and to decrease body fat for a higher fat burning
metabolism.
There are essentially two types of body fat: Essential fat and storage fat.
Essential Fat is needed for normal, every day physiological functions within the
human body. It is located in and around muscle tissues, nerve cells, bone marrow,
intestines, liver and lungs. Without essential fats, normal bodily functions begin to
degrade and ultimately shut down.
Storage Fat is fat that is found and stored just below the skin surface and around
the major organs. Storage fat acts as an insulator for the body, provides energy for
metabolism and is a cushion against trauma. Men tend to have storage fat around
the waist line and women a little lower in the hips and upper thighs. Though some
storage fat is necessary for normal body functions, excessive amounts can be detri-
mental to your health and overall quality of life.

The normal Body Fat % (BF% ) of an individual varies according to age and gender. Use the
tables below as a guide:
Why it is Important to Monitor Your Total Body Water (TBW%) Percentage?
Monitoring the level of body water can be a useful tool for one’s health maintenance. Similar to
body fat estimation, the TBW% (Total Body Water %) function provided in this scale is based
on BIA. The estimated TBW% may vary according to your hydration level. For better accuracy,
avoid fluctuations in hydration level prior to taking a measurement. The accuracy of the scale in
estimating TBW% will also decrease with individuals suffering from diseases or illnesses that
tend to accumulate water in the body. Please remember that the scale represents only a good
approximation of your total body water.
Why is Water so important?
Water is an essential component of the body and is one of the body’s overall health indicators.
Water makes up approximately 50-70% of the body’s weight and is present proportionally
more in lean tissue as compared to fat tissue.

NOTE:
Ideal body fat content is not the same for all people. Age, sex, and heredity are variables in
this measurement. Always consult your physician to determine what is most ideal for you.
1
For example:
• 73% of lean muscle tissue is water
• 80% of blood is water
• 25% of fat is water
• 22% of bone tissue is water
Additionally, water is also a medium for biochemical reactions that regulate body functions.
• It removes waste products from cells for excretion in urine and sweat.
• Provides form to cells which helps to maintain body temperature.
• Provides moisture to skin, mucous membranes and cushions vital organs.
• Lubricates joints and is a component of many body fluids.
• Water helps you feel full and reduces your appetite.
• Adds moisture to skin to improve overall appearance.
• Aids in proper digestion and helps prevent constipation.
• Can help reduce the chances of developing kidney stones.
The normal TBW% of an individual varies according to body fat percentage and gender. The

What are Daily Calorie Requirement, Ideal Calorie Requirement and Ideal Weight?
This scale offers a Daily Calorie Requirement (DCR) and an Ideal Calorie Requirement (ICR) to help
you maintain your current weight and your ideal weight.
Daily Calorie Requirement (DCR) is an approximate estimate of the daily calorie intake to maintain
your present weight and body fat percentage at your present physical activity level.
Ideal DCR is an approximate estimate of the daily calorie intake to maintain your ideal weight and
ideal body fat percentage after you reach it at your present physical activity level.
Note: Your Ideal Calorie Requirement is not the number of calories you should eat to reach
your ideal weight. It is the calorie intake that will maintain your ideal weight once achieved.
Ideal Weight is the recommended weight computed based on your ideal body fat percentage.
• Taking in more calories than you need leads to an increase in body fat as the body stores the
excess calories as fat.
• To lose excessive body fat, you have to burn more calories by following an exercise program and
having a balanced diet.
• Remember: if you lose weight it does not always mean that you have lost body fat. Conversely,
if you put on weight by increasing body muscle, your body fat may stay at the same level or it
may decrease.
Why is the Athlete Mode necessary in a Body Fat Analyzer?
Body fat estimation using BIA could overestimate the body fat percentage of adult elite ath-
letes. The physiological variation of athletes in bone density and level of hydration are two of
the reasons that account for the difference. The Athlete Mode is selectable only for adults 18
years of age or older.
What is the definition of an Athlete?
The general consensus among researchers is that a quantitative dimension could be used to
define an athlete. An athlete is considered a person who does 10 hours or more per week of
aerobic activity and has a resting heart rate of 60 beats per minute. These individuals should
select Athlete Mode for the most accurate results.
When should I use the body fat functions?
The best time for using this analyzer is in the evening. By establishing the pattern of your
body’s fluctuation over a period of one month, you can determine your average level of body
fat. Women will have more fluctuation in water content than men and need to monitor their
reading over a longer time period to establish a personal average. You must determine this as
a reference point before measuring progress in a health program.
You must wait several hours before taking a body fat reading when: drinking coffee
or alcohol, taking diuretic medications, or exercising. These all affect your level of hydration
and the accuracy of this analyzer.
Caution
BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) method determines your body fat and body water percentage
by sending a harmless signal through the body. Do not use this product if you have a
pacemaker, artificial limbs, contraceptive devices, metal plates/screws or other internal
medical devices. When in doubt, contact your physician.
This analyzer will give accurate body fat and body water
%
readings for a majority of people, but is
not intended for use by the following groups:
Children: Anyone under the age of 10 years
Pregnant Women
Note: This instrument is a personal monitor and should be used in a consistent
manner for the most accurate reading. While readings might vary between this
analyzer and other methods of measurement (hydrodensitometry or hand held calipers),
your changes in body fat percentage shown by this instrument will be reflected accurately.
Always consult your physician before beginning any diet or exercise program.
Battery Installation
1. Uses one 9-Volt alkaline battery (not included).
2. Remove battery compartment cover on the bottom of the scale and insert the battery into the
9-Volt battery snap.
3. The scale needs to be initialized before first use or after battery replacement: Press lightly on the
scale platform. The display will show “OOOO”, then the scale will automatically turn off. Your
scale is now ready for use.

lower right corner.
2. You may use the “Mode” button any time during the programming process to return
to “Set Height” should you mis-enter personal data.
Your Personal Data is Now Stored into Memory.
Instructions For Use
Taking Your Body Fat, Body Water and Calorie Reading:
You must have bare feet to make this measurement.
To receive the most consistent reading, use this scale at the same time of day under the

2. The scale turns off by itself after use.
NOTE: Place the Analyzer/Scale on a firm, flat surface to achieve best accuracy.
3. Step on the scale with bare feet. Stand still while the unit measures your weight.
The weight will display for 2 seconds. Remain standing on the scale.
4. Then it starts to measure body fat and total body water. The measurement pattern will
be shown on the display during these measurements.
5. The measurements finish with 1 long “beep”. Remain standing on the scale. The body
