The Black Lodge is a digital modulated delay/reverb combination designed to create
dark and endless soundscapes. The FX-loop lets you change the way the pedal
sounds and oscillates. Apart from echoes and reverb you can also use it to generate
oscillations and noise.
It is handmade in Leuven, Belgium.

Delay
The delay part of the Black Lodge is a
digital modulated delay. The ECHO, F.B.,
and TIME controls are used to control the
delay and the RATE, TRIANGLE/SQUARE
and DEPTH controls are used to adjust
the modulation.
DRY can be used to change the volume of
the clean signal. It’s at unity when turned
to 3 o’clock, so a little clean boost can be
added by turning it further clockwise.
ECHO sets the level of the repeats.
F.B. is the feedback control for the delay,
if it is turned up past 3 o’clock the pedal
starts getting into the region of endless
echoes and oscillation.
TIME lets you adjust the delay time.
RATE adjusts the frequency at which the
delay is modulated.
TRIANGLE/SQUARE is used to change the
shape of the modulation. It allows you to
use either triangle or square wave
modulation or a blend of both.
DEPTH controls the amount of modulation
on the delay. When it’s turned to the left,
there’s no modulation and the RATE and
TRIANGLE/SQUARE controls won’t have
any effect.
Reverb
The reverb circuit is voiced to create a
dark sounding reverb, which makes it less
like a typical spring reverb. There’s no
clean signal going into the reverb, only the
echoes generated by the delay.
WET lets you adjust the level of the
reverberated sound.
DWELL sets the amount of reverb that’s
being fed back to create a larger decay
time. If this knob is turned past 3 o’clock
the reverb starts oscillating

Send/Return
This FX-loop is located between the delay
and reverb. It allows you to insert any
other effect pedal you want in order the
modulate the sound of the reverb.

Footswitches
The Black Lodge features true bypass
switching. To activate the effect, press the
BYPASS switch. If the green LED next to the
footswitch is lit, the signal goes through
the effect. If the LED is turned off, the
effect is bypassed. The delay part is
always on (if the BYPASS switch is
activated). The REVERB switch lets you add
reverb to the signal. The reverb gets it’s
signal from the delay and FX-loop, so
turning this switch on while the BYPASS
switch is turned off won’t do anything until
you turn on the BYPASS switch. When the
REVERB switch is turned on, the green LED
next to that switch will be lit.

WARNING
When using the Black Lodge to generate oscillations and noise, always start with the
ECHO and WET controls at a very low setting. Always set the DWELL and ECHO controls
to minimum (all the way to the left) before adding an effect to the FX-loop. Some pedals
can make the reverb oscillate a lot easier. The oscillations generated by the Black
Lodge can be very loud and may damage your ears when playing on high volumes!
Presets
___________________________________________________________________________________________
Spacious echoes
Use any delay settings as you would use a normal delay pedal, but turn on the REVERB
and add a little WET. This will add a small amount of reverb to each echo so it creates
more space without becoming overwhelming. Turn up the DWELL to make the echoes
even more spacious!
Vocal reverb
Turn the WET and ECHO all the way down (for your own safety!), connect a wah or filter
effect of your choice to the FX-Loop. Then use the same settings as described in the
“Spacious echoes”-preset and turn on the effect you connected to the FX-loop. This
creates a very vocal sounding reverb as the filter modulates the sound going from
delay to reverb.
Very long modulated reverb
Set the delay to have a lot of repeats and a long delay time, set the modulation to
TRIANGLE and the DEPTH at about 20%. Turn up the ECHO to 100%. Now switch on the
REVERB. Set the WET at anywhere between 75 and 100% and the DWELL at about 75%. If
you start playing, you’ll notice this generates a very long lively reverb that’s perfect for
creating ambient sound scapes.
Pitch bending synth
Turn all the knobs to the left. Then put the ECHO and DEPTH at 100%. The result is a
freaky pitchbent signal. Try playing around with the modulation controls to see what you
like the most. One thing that is definitely worth trying is connecting the output of the
Black Lodge to an overdrive or fuzz while it’s set at this preset. The result is even more
synth-like weirdness!

An effect that’s both a delay and a reverb, has an FX-loop, 2 footswitches and 9 control
knobs can get a bit confusing. So these are some presets that can help you to start
experimenting with the Black Lodge.
