TheASAfilmspeedisgiveninthedatasheetpackedwitheach
rolloffilm.ThehighertheASAnumber,themoresensitivethe
film.
Lifttheouterringoftheexposurefactorcontroldial,andturnit
untilthesamenumberastheASAnumberoftheloadedfilm
appearsintheASAspeedindicatorwindow.
FILMTYPEREMINDERDIAL
Usethisdialasa reminderofthetypeoffilmloaded.Tosetthedial,pullouttherewindknobsoftly,
andmovetheselectortofordaylighttypecolorfilm,fortungstentypecolorfilm,for
black-and-whiteandEMP.whenthefilmisnotloaded.

Thescale(4x2x1 x 1/2x)indicatesexposurefactor.
Turntheouterringofthefilmtypedial,andset1xagainstthe
orangearrowfornormalexposures.
Usethiscontrolonlywhennecessarytogiveintentionalover-or
under-exposureswithintherangeofthesefactorswhileworking
on"AUTOMATIC".Forexample,setthedialat2xor4xwhen
shootingagainstthelight,andat1/2xagainstdarkbackgrounds.
Inaddition,thedialcanbesetbetweentheindicatedpositionsto
achievemorespecificexposurecontrol.

TheshutterspeedoftheESIIisautomaticallydeterminedatany
speedwithintherangeof8 to1/1000sec.accordingtothe
brightnessofyoursubjects.

COMPOSEANDFOCUS
Whileviewingthroughtheviewfinder,turnthe
focusingringuntilyoursubjectcomesinto
sharpfocus.
Pentaxviewfindershavea Fresnellenswitha
microprismcenterunderneaththegroundglass.
Asyoulookthroughthefinder,youwillsee
thattheFresnellensconsitsofmanyconcentric
ringswhichprovidethebrightestpossibleimage
onthegroundglass.
Themicroprismisthecenterportionofthis
diagram.Whenyoursubjectisinfocus,the
imageinthemicroprismwillbesharpand
perfectlyclear.Ifyoursubjectisnotinfocus,
themicroprismwillbreaktheimageintomany
smalldots,muchlikeanengraver'sscreen.You
canfocusyoursubjectonanyportionofthe
groundglass.

TTLMETERINGANDAUTOMATICSHUTTER
Forfull-aperturereading,besurethatthestop-downleveris
DOWN.
Thebroaderfigures2,4 and8 intheshutterspeedcalibration
mean2,4 and8 secondsrespectively.Theelectronicshutterofthe
ESIIisguaranteedtoworkproperlydownto8 seconds.
Aftercockingtherapidwindlever,presstheshutterreleasebutton
lightlytoswitchontheelectriccircuit.Themeterneedleinthe
viewfinder indicatesthecorrectshutterspeed.
Iftheneedledoesnotdropto"1000",stopdownthelens
diaphragm.
CAUTION:
Atslowspeeds— slowerthan1/30sec.— putyour
cameraona solidsupportorusea tripodtoprevent
cameramovement.
Depresstheshutterreleasebuttoncompletelywhenreadytotake
yourpicture.Whentheshutterisreleasedandyourfingerisoff
theshutterbutton,themetercircuitisoffandtheneedlewill
returntothetopofthescale.

YourESIIisprovidedwitha shutterlock.Topreventaccidental
shutterrelease,locktheshutterreleasebuttonbymovingthelock
levertotheleft.An"L"becomesvisible.
VIEWFINDERBLINDS
InsidetheeyepieceofyourESIIareconvenientviewfinder blinds
toshutoutstraylightwhichmayentertheviewfinderfromthe
rear.
Whenusinga self-timerorworkinginclose-up,macrophotogra-
phy,tripod-mountedtelephotography,etc.withyoureyeoffthe
viewfinder,closetheblindsbysettingtheshutterspeeddialat
"AUTOMATIC."

OPEN-APERTUREORSTOP-DOWNREADING
WiththenewSMCTakumarlenseswiththediaphragmcoupling
lever, mounteddirectlyontheESIIcamerabody,theTTL
meterreadsexposurethroughthefull-openapertureforcorrect
automaticexposure.Foropen-aperturereadingthestop-down
levershouldbeDOWN.
Withallotherlenses,orwhenusingExtensionTubes,BellowsUnit
orMicroscopeadapter,rememberalwaystopushupthestop
downleverforstopped-downaperturereadingandcorrect
automaticexposure.
TheSMCTakumar85mmf/1.9(bottom,left)andSMCTakumar-
Zoom85mm-210mmlensesdonothavethediaphragmcoupling
lever; therefore,theyshouldbeusedontheESIIforstop-down
reading.
CAUTION:
AllSMCTakumarlensesupto300mmexcepttheabovetwoare
designedforopen-aperturereading.Whendirectlymountedonthe
ESII,theywillgivecorrectexposurereadingsatfullaperture.Do
nottrytotakemeterreadingsatstopped-downaperture,asthis
willindicatedifferentshutterspeeds.
AlsorememberthattheTTLmeteringdoesnotworkunlessthe
shutterdialissetat"AUTOMATIC".

Thepreviewleveronthelensshouldalwaysbesetto"AUTO"
whenthelensisusedontheES11.Theleverhasaninterlockthat
preventsitfrombeingsetto"MAN"whenmountedontheESII
Whenmountedona PentaxcameraotherthantheESorESIIthe
leverwilloperatenormally.
MECHANICALSHUTTER
Inadditiontotheelectronicshutterforautomaticexposure
control,theESIIhasa mechanicalshutterforspeeds:1/60X for
electronicflashsynchronization,1/125,1/2501/5001/1000sec
plusB (Bulb).
Tooperateatanyoneofthesespeeds,justturntheshutterdial
from"AUTOMATIC"tothedesiredspeedsetting.Nowthe
electriccircuitandTTLmetercircuitareoff.
Tomakeanexposurelongerthan8 seconds,settheshutterdialat
B.Theshutterwillstayopenaslongasyoudepresstheshutter
button.Asyoureleaseyourfingerfromtheshutterbutton,the
shuttercloses.
Forextremelylongexposures,settheshutterlockbymoving the
levertotheleftwhiledepressingtheshutterbutton.Alternately,
usea cablerelasewitha lockingdevice.

rollhasbeentaken,therapid
windleverwillnotturn,indi-

rewound.

beenreleasedfromthetake-up

Pulloutthefilmrewindknob
