Chapter 5- Sharing andPrinting Photos
Onceyouhave takensomephotoswithyourHP PhotoSmartC500DigitalCamera,youcanusetheminlots offun
ways.Youcantransferthem toyourIBM-compatibleor Macintoshcomputerfor useincreativeprojects,orfor
sharingwith familyandfriendsviatheInternet.Thecamerasavesphotoson thememorycardinJPEGformatwhich
meansthat youcan use awide varietyof creative software to manipulate thephoto filesonce youhavesaved them
onyourcomputer.IfyouhaveanHPJetSend-capableprinter,suchastheHPPhotoSmartP1000/P1100printer,you
canusethe HPPhotoSmartC500DigitalCamera’sHPJetSend capabilityforwirelessprinting.Ifyour printer hasa
slotfora CompactFlashmemory card,youcan printphotosdirectlyfromyourmemorycard.

Connecting the Camerato Your PC
You can connect your HP PhotoSmart C500 Digital Camera to an IBM-compatible, Windows PC using the USB or
serial cable that comes in the camera package. Before youcan use your camera with your computer, you need to
installthe HPPhotoSmartsoftware.
Note: If you have a Macintosh computer, see “Connecting the Camera to Your Macintosh” on page 101 for more
information.

Installing the Software
1. Insertthe HPPhotoSmartCDintoyourcomputer’sCD-ROMdrive.Theinstallationwindowautomatically
appears.Ifitdoesn’t,useWindowsExplorerorMyComputertolocateyourCD-ROMdrive,thendouble-clickthe
filesetup.exe.
2. Click Next tobeginthe installation,andthenfollowthe instructionsonthe screentoinstallthesoftware.

Your computer’s operatingsystemdetermineswhichtype ofconnection,USBor serial,you canuse toconnect your
camerato yourcomputer. Seethe tableabove.
To connect the camera to your computer:
1. If you are using a serial connection, turn your computer off. If you are using a USB
connection,you donot needtoturnthe computeroff.
2. PlugtheroundendoftheUSB orserialcableintothe camera.

3. Plug theotherendof thecableintotheappropriateportonyour computer.
4. If you are using a serial connection, turn your computer on.
Downloading Photos
Downloadingistheprocessof transferringphotosfromthecamera’smemorycardtoyour computer.Beforeyou
candownloadphotostoyourcomputer,youneed toinstallthesoftwareon yourPC.See “Installingthe Software”
onpage 95 fordetails.
Note: To conservebatterypower,usean ACpower adapterwhenyouare downloadingphotosto yourcomputer.
To download photos:
1. Connect the camera to your computer using the appropriate cable (USB or serial).
2. Turnthe cameraonandturnthecameramodedialto PC.
PC mode transfers control of the camera to your computer.

3. Start theHPPhotoImagingsoftware:
•Double-click the C500 Photo Imaging Software iconon your desktop.
OR
•Click Start,Programs,HP PhotoSmart, C500Camera,C500 Photo Imaging Software.
4. ClickUnload Camera.
5. Thephotoswillbesavedin thefolderlistedin theSave my images to section. If you want to change the
locationof thisfolder,clickthebrowse (...) buttonandchooseanew folder.
6. Ifyouwantto createasub-folderbasedonthe dateandtime,select
In new sub-folder.A newfolderwillbecreatedwithinthe folder
shown in the Save my images to section.
Note: Onceyouare familiarwiththedownloadprocess,youcan
delete photosfromthecameraaftertheyare savedonyour
computer. Select Delete all images from camera after
download.
7. ClickStart.
8. Click Yes to confirm that the images are being saved in the correct
folderandtodownloadthephotos.

Printing Photos
TheHPPhoto Printingsoftwaregivesyou severaloptionsfor printing yourphotos.You cancreateandprintalbum
pageswithphotosofdifferentsizesandorientations,ormakereprintsof yourphotosinstandardsizes.
To print photos from a PC:
1. Start theHPPhoto Imagingsoftware:
•Double-click the C500 Photo Imaging Software iconon your desktop.

•Click Start,Programs,HP PhotoSmart, C500Camera,C500 Photo Imaging Software.

arestored.ClickOpenFiles,navigatetotheappropriatefolder,selectthephotofilesyouwant

•Ifyouhave notdownloaded thephotosfromthecamerayet,connectthe cameratoyour
PC and click AcquireImages. See thesoftware’sHelp fordetails.
Note: AcquireImagesdoes notsavethe photostoyourcomputer’sharddrive;itdisplaysa
copyforyou toviewand manipulate.Youneedto manuallysaveeachimagefromthesoftware.
4. Choosehowtouse yourphotos:
5. Placeyourphotosontothe albumor reprintspageby draggingthemfromthegallery.
Note: YoucanadjusttheExposure,Color,Rotation,ScalingandSharpness bydouble-clicking onaphotoand
opening the Image Adjustments window. See the software’s Help for details.
6. Click the Print buttontoprintyourphotos.
Note: Forcompleteinformationon theHPPhotoPrintingsoftwarefeatures,clickHelp.
•ClicktheAlbum buttontocreate albumpages.
•Selectthelayout,page sizeandpageorientation,then clickOK.

Downloadingistheprocessof transferringphotosfromthecamera’smemorycardtoyour computer.Beforeyou
candownloadphotosto yourcomputer,youneed toinstallthesoftwareon yourMacintosh.See “Installingthe
Software”onpage101fordetails.Forfastdownloading,itisrecommendedthatyouuseamemorycardreader,such
astheSanDiskImageMate(availableatwww.hpshopping.com)tosave photofilesonyour computer. See“Usinga
CardReader”onpage106for moreinformation.

To download photos:
1. Connect the camera to yourcomputer using the USB cable.
2. Turnthe cameraonandturnthecameramodedialto PC.
3. Openthe HP PhotoSmart C500 folder on your computer’s hard drive.
Note: Ifyouinstalledthesoftwarein afolderotherthan thedefaultfolder,navigate tothatfolder.
4. Openthe Digita Desktop folder,then double-clickDigita Desktop.

5. ClickConnect.
6. ChooseDigita Camera (USB) and click OK.
7. Downloadthe photos.Onlythesinglephotosinthe currentwindowcanbedownloaded.Ifyou wantto
downloadanentire grouporseriesof photos,double-clickthephotothatrepresentsthe grouporseriesand
displaythe grouporseries ina newwindow.
Ifyouwanttodownloadallthephotosfromyour camera:
•First,downloadthe singlephotosinthe current window. SelectCopy All Images to Disk fromtheView
menu.
•Then,downloadeachof the Burst,Timelapse,andgroupedphotos.Openeachgroupor series,oneata
time, by double-clicking on the photo that represents the group or series. Select Copy All Images to Disk
fromtheView menu.
Ifyouwant todownloadonlyselectedphotosfromyourcamera:
•PresstheShiftkeyonyourkeyboardandclickon thephotosyou wantto download.SelectCopy Selected
Images to DiskfromtheView menu.
•To selectphotoswithina groupor series,double-clickthephotothatrepresentsthegroupor seriesto
displaythephotosin anew windowandthenselectphotosfor downloading.
8. Choose afolder whereyou want thephotosto besaved.Click Select.
Thephotos aresaved onyour computer.

Printing Photos
You canuse theDigitasoftwareforprintingthumbnailsorfull-sizedcopiesof yourphotos,or copiesofseveral
photosonanalbumpage.Ifyouneedtoprintyour photosinothersizes,orifyouneedtomanipulateyourphotos,
usecreative photoprintingsoftware.
To print photos:
1. Connectthecamerato yourcomputerusingtheUSBcable.See“ConnectingtheCameratoYourMacintosh”on
page 101 for details.
2. Turnthe cameraonandturnthecameramodedialto PC.
3. Start theDigitaDesktopsoftware.
4. ClickConnect.
5. ChooseDigita Camera (USB) and click OK.
6. Selectthe photos youwantto print.

•Ifyouwant toprintthumbnailsofyourphotos,selectPrint from theFile menu.
•If youwantto print a full-sizedphoto,double-click on the photo, thenselect Print fromtheFile menu.
•Ifyouwant toprintseveraldifferentphotosonan albumpage,selectPrint Album fromtheFilemenu.
•Choose thenumberofrowsand columns,and selectFinequality forthebestqualityprints.
•If youdo notwant the filenamesto appearbelow the photos, deselect Show Filenames.
•Click Print.
8. Choosetheprintsettings,andthenclickPrint.
Printing Photos Without aComputer
Ifyourprinterhasa slotfor aCompactFlashmemorycard,suchas theHPPhotoSmartP1000/P1100printerdoes,
youcanprintyour photosdirectlyfrom thememorycard.Seeyour printer’sdocumentationfor details.
TheHPPhotoSmartC500DigitalCameraletsyoucreateDigitalPrintOrderFormat(DPOF)filestopre-selectwhich
photostoprintand howmanycopiesyou need.
Usinga CardReader
If you have a CompactFlash memory card reader, such as the SanDisk ImageMate (available at
www.hpshopping.com)youcanview andsavephotofilesonyour computer.Connectthecardreaderto your
computer,and insertthe memorycardintothe cardreader.Youcan usethe memorycard justas youwoulduse a
floppydisk.See yourcard reader’sdocumentation fordetails.

Using aDigital PrintOrder Format (DPOF) File
ADPOF fileis afile thatyou createusingyour digitalcamera.Itis storedon thememory cardand contains
informationsuchaswhichphotosareselectedandhowmanyofeachphotoistobeprinted.Forexample,whenyou
gatherwithfamilyandfriendstoview yourphotos,youcouldcreatea DPOFfile containingreferencesofphotos
theywanttoprint.SomeprinterscanreadaDPOFfilefromthememorycardsothatyoudonothavetore-selectthe
photostoprint.
Note: Ifyou deletea photothatisreferenced ina DPOFfile onthe memory card,youneedto recreate theDPOF
filebeforeprintingthephotosdirectlyfromthe memorycard.
To create a DPOF file:
1. Turnthe cameraonandturnthecameramodedialto Rev.
2. Press the Menubutton.
3. Use the 4-way arrowbutton to scroll to the DPOF menu.
You canchooseto:
•Add current -addthe currentphoto totheDPOF file.
•Add all -addallthe photosstoredon the memorycardtothe DPOF
file.
Ifyouhave markedyourphotos(see “MarkingPhotos”onpage 70),you
can:
•Add marked- addmarkedphotosto theDPOF file.

4. Usethe4-way arrowbuttontoscrollto theoptionyouwantto select.
5. Pressthe Select button (leftsoftkey).

To delete a DPOF file:

HPJetSendallowsforfast,wirelesstransfer.YoucantransferphotosfromthecameratoanyJetSendcapabledevice.
IfyourprintersupportsHPJetSendinfrared,suchastheHPPhotoSmartP1000/P1100printer,youcantransferyour
photos directlyfrom thecameratotheprinter.Seeyour printer’sdocumentationformoreinformation.
IfyoutransferBurst,Timelapse,orgroupedphotos,closeorcollapsethegrouporseriestotransferallthephotos.If
the group or series is open or expanded, only the current photo will be transferred.
To JetSend the current photo:
1. Turnthe cameraonandturnthecameramodedialto Revor Play.
2. Usethe4-wayarrowbuttonto scrollthroughyour photosuntilthephoto(or group)youwantto transferis
displayed.

While connected, a transfer status bar displays on the color LCD.
Duringthetransfer,thePhotoQualitydiamondiconsflashon thestatus
LCD,and theredlightnext to theviewfinder onthebackof thecamera
blinks.Youcancancelthe transferatany timeby pressing theStopbutton
(centersoftkey).
6. When youhavefinishedtransmittingphotos,presstheExit button(right
