1INTRODUCTION
Product Overview
The HP JetDirect 300X and 170X OfficeConnect Print
Servers (J4101B and J4102B respectively) send data to
printers at speeds of up to 360 kilobytes per second,
which is as fast or faster than many internal print
servers. These external print servers enhance
workgroup capability by letting you place your printer
or plotter at a convenient location directly on the
network, and by increasing network printer
performance and management.
Use the HP JetDirect OfficeConnect Print Server to connect
a printer or plotter to your network.
The HP JetDirect 300X OfficeConnect Print Server
provides connectivity to 10Base-T and 100Base-TX
networks. The HP JetDirect 170X OfficeConnect
Print Server provides connectivity to 10Base-T
networks. With either print server, you can connect
one printer or plotter with a parallel port to the
network. Each print server has one high-speed,
bidirectional parallel port (IEEE 1284 standard) that
supports multiple network operating systems (NOSs).
Network Management
The print server supports the Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP), which enables remote
printer management and troubleshooting. A standard
SNMP agent resides on the print server. Any standard
SNMP-based application can be used to access and
manage the print server.
Peripherals connected to the print server appear as
intelligent nodes on the network and are accessible
through various diagnostic utilities using the SNMP/IPX
and SNMP/IP protocols. The print server also collects
network statistics and error messages to aid in
network management and troubleshooting.

Network Printing Basics
Networks consist of computers connected together to
share information and resources, such as printers.
There are two ways to share printers on a network:
Client-Server and Peer-to-Peer.
Network Printing Configurations
On a client-server network, client computers send
print jobs to dedicated server computers that control
the use of each printer. This is typically used in
medium to large networks where dedicated servers
are used to manage printing needs of many users.
Client-server networks use network operating systems
(NOSs) such as Novell NetWare and Microsoft
Windows NT or 2000 Server.

Network Printing Basics 3
On a peer-to-peer network, dedicated servers are
not used. Instead, each computer is configured to
send print jobs to the printer directly. This is more
suitable for smaller networks. On peer-to-peer
networks, users configure their Microsoft Windows
95, 2000, or NT systems to print directly to the
printer. Note that peer-to-peer printing can be
configured on a client-server network. For example, a
small workgroup might use peer-to-peer printing even
though it is connected to an enterprise-wide client-
server network.
Regardless of the network type (client-server or peer-
to-peer), your computers and printers must use a
common language, or network protocol to
communicate with each other. The most common
protocols are IPX (Internet Packet Exchange), made
popular by Novell NetWare networks, and TCP/IP
(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol),
made popular by the Internet. The print server
supports these and other popular network protocols.

Configuration for Network Printing
■If you are on a Novell NetWare (client-server)
network, you can configure the NetWare server
and the print server for network printing using
HP JetDirect software. Then configure the network
clients for printing.
■If you are setting up client-server printing on a
Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT network,
you configure your Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT
server for printing using HP JetDirect software,
then share the printer with client computers.
■If you are setting up peer-to-peer printing on a
Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT network,
you simply configure each Windows 95, 98, 2000,
or NT client to print directly to the printer using
HP JetDirect software.

Introduction
To install the print server, complete these tasks:
■Record the serial number and MAC address
■Use the rubber feet
■Install the hardware (page 7)
■Use the HP JetDirect CD-ROM to set up your
network printer (see Chapter 3)
Recording the Serial Number and MAC Address
Write down the serial number and MAC Address (on
the bottom of your print server) on the inside of your
manual cover. You might need these when calling for
customer support.
Using the Rubber Feet
Included with your print server are four self-adhesive
rubber feet that prevent your print server from sliding
around on a surface. Stick the feet at each corner on
the bottom of your print server.
Wall Mounting the Print Server
There are two slots on the bottom of the print server
for wall mounting. You can mount the print server
with the connectors facing either up or down.
Hardware Installation
To install the HP JetDirect 300X or 170X
OfficeConnect print server, you need to complete
these steps:
■Verify that your printer parallel port works properly.
■Connect the print server to the network.
■Connect the print server to the printer.
■Generate a print server configuration page.

page 9.

Follow these steps to install the print server.
1To ensure your printer works properly, do one of the
following:
■send data through the parallel port of the printer
you are connecting to the print server
■or, generate a printer self-test page (see your
printer manual for instructions)
2Switch off the power for the printer.
3Connect the print server to the network with a
10Base-T network cable.
4Connect the print server to the printer with a
IEEE 1284 parallel cable (see Appendix A for cable
part numbers).
5Plug the power module into the power receptacle in
the back of the print server.
6Plug the power module into the wall outlet. Since
there is no power switch, the print server is switched
on after you plug it in.
7Check the LEDs on the front of print server. The
Status LED should be greeneither steady or blinking.
If the internal self-test failed, the Activity LED will be
on and the Status LED will be off. For troubleshooting
information, see Chapter 4.
8Wait about 10 seconds. Check the speed LED(s) on
the back to verify that one is lit.
9Switch on the power for the printer to begin printing.
After you have installed the print server, you are ready
to print a configuration page to verify the installation.
Printing a Configuration Page
Follow these steps to print a configuration page for
the print server:
1Press the Test button on the back of the print server.
2The configuration page should print. If it does not,
see Chapter 4 for troubleshooting information.

Introduction
HP provides a variety of software solutions to set up
or manage your HP JetDirect-connected print server(s).
The HP JetDirect CD-ROM, shipped with your print
server, provides the fastest and easiest way to install
your print server. For additional options, see the
appropriate sections in this chapter.
HP JetDirect CD-ROM
The HP JetDirect CD-ROM contains software,
documentation, registration, and licensing information
for your HP JetDirect print server.
Using this CD-ROM on Windows-based systems, you
can do the following:
■Choose the Install Network Printer
option for
quick setup
■View documentation for your print server
■Register your print server via the Internet
■Install other HP software for network printer
installation and management
On the HP JetDirect CD-ROM, there may be software
that is not supported with the HP JetDirect 170X
OfficeConnect Print Server. Please see page 4 for
supported operating systems.
To Run the CD-ROM Installation Utility
On Windows 95, 98, 2000, and NT systems, insert
the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Wait for the
installation utility to automatically start, or run
SETUP.EXE from the root directory of the HP JetDirect
CD-ROM.
Select the option you desire and follow the
instructions on the screen.

To Quickly Set Up Your Printer
To quickly set up your print server and system for
network printing, follow these steps:
1Run the HP JetDirect CD-ROMs installation utility.
2Select Install Network Printer
and follow the
instructions on the screen.
3When prompted, print a test page to verify printer
setup.
To View Documents on the CD-ROM
Several HP JetDirect print server documents, including
the HP JetDirect Print Server Administrators Guide,
are provided on the CD-ROM in Adobe Acrobat
Reader format (*.pdf files). These documents can be
accessed using the CD-ROM utility.
1Run the CD-ROM utility.
2Select View Documentation
. The Acrobat Reader
will run and will display the HP JetDirect Documenta-
tion home page.
3Click on the document that you want to view.
For other supported operating systems, you can
access the documentation files directly from the
\manuals directory on the CD-ROM. The Adobe
Acrobat Reader for your system must be installed and
available on your system. If you have difficulty viewing
documents, upgrade to the latest released version of
Acrobat Reader.
