Introduction
This document defines the supported HP NetServer LXr Pro configurations for Microsoft Cluster Server.
These configurations minimize single points of failure, provide maximum availability, and have been
certified by Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft. This guide is prescriptive; it describes the HP NetServer LXr
Pro configurations supported by HP. Any configuration not expressly allowed by this guide will not be
supported by HP.

RAID arrays A RAID array (logical disk) must be composed of all the same disk model
(i.e., part number and suffix). Different size or speed disks are not allowed
in the same RAID array. Any combination of disk models is allowed on a
SCSI channel. Any combination of disk models is allowed in a cluster.
RAID arrays may not span NetRAID Adapters.

An Overview to Installing the Cluster
Introduction
A HP NetServer LXr Pro cluster provides a reliable rack-mounted, increased availability solution for critical
applications. The basic cluster consists of two HP NetServer LXr Pro systems coupled to HP Rack Storage/8
units. In the HP NetServer LXr Pro cluster, the operating system files, application files, and other files local to
each node are stored using fixed or hot swap disks. Disks are located internally in the system. Both HP
NetServers share external drives located in the HP Rack Storage/8 unit(s). The drives that are shared between
the two systems are accessed using a HP NetRAID Adapter located in each HP NetServer LXr Pro unit. Both
HP NetServers run Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition, which includes Microsoft Cluster Server
software.
Why Use This Guide?
Use this guide as a reference during setup and installation of the HP NetServer Microsoft Cluster Server. You
will need this guide as you setup the HP NetServer LXr Pros, setup, assemble and cable the cluster in a rack,
and install server and cluster software. This document does not replace existing documentation for setup and
installation; rather it supplements the existing documentation.

A Graphical Overview to Setting Up the Cluster
There are 8 major steps required to setting up a HP NetServer LXr Pro Microsoft Cluster Server. These steps
are Getting Started and Parts 1-7. The Installation Work Flow diagram below provides a graphical overview of
the tasks to be performed. As you proceed through these instructions, pay close attention to the order in which
components are installed and configured and systems are powered up, powered down and rebooted. Departing
from the sequence presented may cause unnecessary work and unpredictable results.

What’s Needed?
Addresses/Names
During the course of cluster installation, be prepared to supply the following:
•Minimum of three external IP addresses: one for each System (A and B) and one for the HP NetServer
cluster client LAN.
•Two internal IP addresses for the Intra-cluster LAN. One for System A and one for System B. (May use
"hidden" or "intranet" addresses. See the MSCS Administrator’s Guide for a discussion of IP
addressing.)
NOTE The external IP addresses and internal IP addresses must be on different subnets.
•Cluster and node names (limited to 15 or less alphanumeric characters)
•Subnet mask
•Account name password and MS domain
Hardware
To ensure a timely installation, make sure you have all the required hardware. Do this by comparing the
hardware you have with ordering documentation such as the parts lists created by Order and Rack Assistant.
Software
•Microsoft Windows NT Server (Enterprise Edition), version 4.0, which includes Windows NT, version
4.0, Windows NT Service Pack 3, and Microsoft Cluster Server installation software.
•Microsoft hotfix clusfixi.exe for Windows NT. See Appendix E for instructions on downloading this
file from the worldwide web.
•HP NetServer Navigator CD version G.01.00 or later
•HP NetRAID Utilities (must be downloaded before you begin, see Appendix A - Obtaining HP
NetRAID Utilities
•MS-DOS version 6.0 or later
•Cluster Installation Test which can be downloaded by accessing the Certified Installer Corner on the
HP Cluster web page of the HP NetServer web site at: http://www.hp.com/go/netserver.
Tools
Generally standard installation tools are all that’s needed to disassemble and reassemble the HP NetServer LXr
Pro and HP Rack Storage/8 units. However, the items listed below are unique and should be made available
before proceeding.
•Torx™ T-25 driver supplied in the Rack Installation Toolkit
•Portable Field Service Grounding Kit (3M part number 8505, or the equivalent).

HP provides online documentation to ensure you have all the documentation you need. HP Information
Assistant provides extensive support information and is available on the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM.
Although you can access HP Information Assistant from the NetServer Navigator Main menu, HP recommends
that you install HP Information Assistant on an available Windows client connected to a printer. For more
information about installing HP Information Assistant, refer to the system documentation.

Part 1 - Installing Additional Hardware Components
When HP NetServer LXr Pros are shipped from the factory, they are configured for stand-alone operation. The
first step in creating a cluster is to install additional hardware that will allow the HP NetServer LXr Pros to
share data and to communicate with one another and with the LAN.
CAUTION Because these procedures involve opening the servers, HP recommends that you use a
Portable Field Service Grounding Kit (3M part number 8505, or the equivalent). The kit
contains a wrist strap, anti-static mat, and cable. Using this kit prevents damage to the
system from static electricity.
NOTE The steps in this part are for installing components into a single HP NetServer LXr Pro.
Be sure to perform this procedure on both the System A and System B HP NetServers.
You may proceed through all the steps on one system, and then repeat them on the
second system, or you may choose to perform each step on both systems before going to
the next step.
To install additional hardware components:
1. Gather the required hardware components for the HP NetServer LXr Pro, except for the HP Rack
Storage/8 unit(s). Separate the components into two systems designated as System A and System B.
2. Remove the top cover from the HP NetServer LXr Pro.

3. Install the following types of components as provided using the instructions with each component. If
necessary refer to HP Information Assistant for additional instructions:
•Processors. Standard HP NetServer LXr Pros are equipped with either one or two Pentium Pro 200
MHz main processors. To operate a Microsoft Server Cluster, both HP NetServers must be equipped
with dual Pentium Pro processors.
•Main Memory. Single-processor HP NetServer LXr Pros are shipped from the factory with 128
MB of main memory. Dual processor LXr Pros are shipped with 512 MB of main memory. Cluster
operations require a minimum of 128 MB of main memory. Typically you do not need to add
memory to your LXr Pros. However, if additional memory was provided install the additional
memory.
•LAN Adapters. Install two LAN adapters in each system. If other cards are in the PCI slots listed
below, remove them and install them in another slot. LAN adapter must be installed in PCI slots as
follows:
PCI slot P1 (Client LAN)
PCI slot P2 (Intra-cluster LAN)
•Internal Disks. If provided install the local storage drives (internal drives) into the LXr Pros using
kit D5962A.
•NetRAID Adapters. Some cluster configurations use two NetRAID adapters for management of
shared storage. Typically, only one is provided (installed) in the HP NetServers. Therefore, if
provided install the second NetRAID adapter in each server using PCI slots P4-P6.
NOTE NetRAID Adapters must be installed in PCI slots P4-P6. If the factory installed adapter
is installed in a slot other then P4-P6 remove it and reinstall the adapter.
4. Replace the HP NetServer LXr Pro’s cover and secure thumbscrews.
5. You have now completed hardware installation on the HP NetServer LXr Pro units. Go to Part 2 -
Setting Up the HP Rack Storage/8 and Rack Mounting Cluster Devices.

Part 2 - Setting Up the HP Rack Storage/8 and Rack-
Mounting Cluster Devices
In this step you will both setup the HP Rack Storage/8 units and install them and other cluster devices in the
rack.
Setting up the HP Rack Storage/8
Your HP Rack Storage/8 units will be used for shared storage in the cluster and must be set up for single bus
operation. Although the HP Rack Storage/8 are shipped from the factory configured for single bus operations.
Check their setup as outlined below and change them as necessary.
Single Bus Operation
When cabled as a single bus unit, the HP Rack Storage/8 provides up to eight hard disk drives on a single SCSI
bus. To set up the Rack Storage/8 for single bus operation:
1. Set the Option Switches to the positions shown in the following illustration.
2. Use the bridge cable included as part of the shipped items, and connect the port labeled 1-Out to the port
labeled 2-In.

Rack-Mounting the Cluster Hardware
At this point the cluster hardware is assembled and setup (including hardware enhancements to the HP
NetServer LXr Pros) and ready to be mounted in the rack. Supported cluster hardware configurations have a
specific number of devices and are cabled in a specific manner. Make sure you follow the documents specified
in this section.
To install the cluster hardware in the rack:
1. To assist you in mounting the various cluster devices in the rack, refer to the following:
•HP Rack Assistant Rack Layouts
The rack layouts were created during the ordering process for the cluster. The rack layout depicts
the placement of rack mounted components and must be followed to ensure cable connections can
be made.
•HP NetServer Rack Installation Roadmap found in the HP NetServer Rack Installation Kit.
The roadmap provides instructions for rack assembly, if not already done, and references documents
that will guide and assist you in installing rack mounted devices.
•HP NetServer Rack Assembly and Cabling Reference Guide
Use this guide as a reference during assembly of the HP NetServer rack-optimized components and
to complete the cabling of an assembled rack. You will need the information in this guide as you
attach and route cables for the HP NetServer LXr Pro Series and the HP Rack Storage/8 units. This
document supplements the HP NetServer Rack Installation Road Map, and expands that Road
Map’s STEP 9 in Chapter 3 (for cabling power) and Chapter 5 (for data cabling). This guide
provides instructions for cabling.
NOTE Do not connect SCSI cables between the HP NetServer LXr Pros and HP Rack
Storage/8s at this time.
•Appendix D of this guide
This appendix provides specific cabling interconnection information that must be followed for SCSI
cabling between the servers and external shared storage units and for device operating power.
2. After all components have been secured in the racks, slide the hot swap disks into the HP Rack Storage/8
cabinets but do not engage them into the card cage connectors.
3. Your hardware is now assembled and ready to setup for cluster operation. Go to Part 3 – Configuring
the HP NetRAID Adapter.

Part 3 - Configuring the HP NetRAID Adapter
In Parts 1 and 2 you installed additional hardware in your HP NetServers, setup both the HP NetServers and the
Rack Storage/8 units for use in the cluster, and rack mounted the cluster hardware. In this part, you will
configure the HP NetRAID Adapters you installed in Systems A and B.
Configuring Your Systems NetRAID Adapter
NOTE This procedure must be performed on both Systems A and B. Start with
System A and then repeat the procedure on System B.
1. Ensure that no SCSI cables are connected between Systems A and B (LXr Pros) and the Rack Storage 8
cabinets.
If these units are cabled now, before you are directed to cable them, the cluster configuration steps will
not be performed correctly.
NOTE In steps 2 and 3 you are required to take action during the bootup of System A. Review
steps 2 and 3 before starting bootup so that you are prepared to take the necessary
actions.
2. Turn on power to System A. During bootup (after initialization and channel scanning) check that the
displayed HP NetRAID firmware version is:
HP NetRAID Adapter BIOS VER S.01.00 or later.
If not, perform step 3 and then see Appendix B, Updating the HP NetRAID Firmware.
3. Press Ctrl+M when the following prompt appears:
Option: Experienced users may press <Ctrl> <M>
for HP NetRAID Express Tools now.
NOTE When system scanning is completed the HP NetRAID Express Tools Management menu
is displayed. Express tools are management and diagnostic utilities that contain
functions not available in HP NetRAID Assistant.
4. From the Management Menu, choose Disable BIOS, then Yes.
HP NetRAID Express Tools displays the message, BIOS Is Currently Disabled.
5. Choose Objects|SCSI Channel.
6. Check the status of the Ultra SCSI option for each NetRAID channel. If enabled, disable the option.
7. Check that the Terminate option for each channel is set to Terminate Wide Channel. If not,
change the setting accordingly.
8. Choose Objects|Adapter|.
9. Choose Cluster Mode, then Enable.
10. Choose Initiator ID. For:
•System A Initiator ID to 7
•System B Initiator ID to 6
