Starting HP Data Protector Express Software
Windows
Double-click the HP Data Protector Express Software shortcut on the desktop.
Or click the Start button and select HP from the Programs (or All Programs) submenu. Then select
Data Protector Express.
Linux
Open a terminal window. Then access the directory where you installed HP Data Protector Express
Software. Type ./dpadmin. For example:
[/usr/local/$insdirlinp$/$insdirlinc$]# ./dpadmin
You can also create a shortcut on your KDE or GNOME desktop. (See the HP Data Protector Express
Software Installation Guide for more information.)
NOTE: These tutorials use the common graphical user interface available on Windows and Linux systems.
The console interface operates similarly on NetWare systems.
Login Screen
The Login screen opens. The default user name for the HP Data Protector Express Software administrator
is Admin. There is no default password required for this user to log on.
Click OK to accept the user name and password.
NOTE: Although we will accept the default login for the purposes of our step-by-step instructions, we
strongly recommend that you assign a password before you start to use HP Data Protector Express
Software, particularly in a multi-user environment. See “How do I create or change my password?” in
Tutorial 5.

When you have logged onto HP Data Protector Express Software, the Main HP Data Protector Express
Software window appears.

Detail Area
The Detail area is your main working area. Spend a few minutes seeing how the Detail Area changes
according to the selections that you make in the Desk bar and the Task and Information pane. For
example:
•Note how the desk bar is not always visible. For example, it is not relevant when you are working
through a wizard, so the left-most pane contains the Task and Information pane.
•If you prefer or need to work with a hierarchical (tree) view of the objects click the Folders button in
the tool bar.
•Have a look at the Help in the Task and Information pane. In addition to information about using HP
Data Protector Express Software, this menu also contains useful web links that enable you to register
your product and purchase options. See also “Help Menu” in Tutorial 1.
The backup and restore examples in this chapter give you the opportunity to find your way round HP Data
Protector Express Software in a structured fashion.
We will use two buttons, Home and Folders, in the tool bar to organize and display objects in the Detail
Area.
Home button
When you create your jobs and define your media, they are recorded by default as objects in the Home
folder. This means you can access them easily by just clicking on the Home button.
The Home folder is not a folder on your disk, but a view of information inside HP Data Protector Express
Software. As in any folder structure, we recommend that you create additional folders within the Home
folder to organize related objects. In our examples we will create folders for backup media and folders for
different types of backup jobs.
Once you have created an object in the Home folder, just right-click on it to display a drop-down menu
with relevant commands. For example, once you have created your backup job, you can run it any time.
Folders button
When you click on the Folders button in the tool bar, HP Data Protector Express Software displays a tree
hierarchy showing all the objects that have been created or defined within the Detail Area. This includes
backup media and the files on them, tape drives, network servers, back up jobs, restore jobs, and so on.
This hierarchy represents HP Data Protector Express Software’s catalog, which is its mechanism for
tracking objects together with associated security information. If you are responsible for administering HP
Data Protector Express Software, you will need to understand the catalog and how it is linked to a Storage
Management Domain. These concepts are beyond the scope of this guide, but are described in detail in
the User’s Guide and Technical Reference.

Quick Access Control (Windows only)
The Quick Access Control application is automatically installed on Windows systems when you select the
Quick or Recommended installation, and it is selected by default in a Custom installation. This
application provides simplified access to the primary features of HP Data Protector Express Software.
After installation, you will notice a Quick Access Control icon in the Windows System Tray (normally in
the bottom right-hand corner of the screen).
When you mouse over the Quick Access Control icon, a tool tip is displayed that contains further
information.
The appearance of the Quick Access Control icon changes to indicate the state of HP Data Protector
Express Software, thus providing continuous feedback. Right-clicking on the icon displays a menu that
provides quick access to HP Data Protector Express Software functions. See Tutorial 4: Using Quick
Access Control for further details.

Disk-to-disk (D2D) Backup
HP Data Protector Express Software enables disk-to-disk (D2D) backups through the creation of virtual
libraries as backup targets. A virtual library emulates the operation of a physical tape library, and all the
features available in HP Data Protector Express Software to support backup to physical tape libraries are
supported for virtual libraries.
There are two stages to creating a D2D backup.
1. Create a virtual library.
2. Create a disk backup job that uses the virtual library as a target.
Create a virtual library
1. Run HP Data Protector Express Software and log in.
2. Select Wizards in the Favorites desk bar and double click D2D Device in the Detail Area.
3. Double-click Create Virtual Library in the Detail Area to start the Virtual Library Configuration
wizard..

4. At the Welcome prompt give the virtual library a name, such as “My First Virtual Library”. By
default the Machine hosting the Virtual Library is the local machine. Other machines can host the
Virtual Library when multiple machines are in the Data Protector Express Storage Domain. We will
accept the default of the local machine. Click Next.
5. In the next screen the disk location(s) used for the D2D backup is specified. The default location is a
new folder in the installation folder of HP Data Protector Express Software. We recommend that the
location is not on the same disk drive as the data that is to be backed up. We will not use the default
location. Remove the default location so that it is no longer an option. Select it in the Folder list and
click Delete. Click Yes.
6. Click Add… to specify a new storage folder. Use the Browse (magnifier) icon to select the folder,
which may be on any local or visible network drive (using the Uniform Naming Convention
\\[computer_name]\[shared_folder]\[resource]).

When the location is selected, set Specify size (in GB) for storage to 18 (or appropriate value for
your backup jobs). This is the maximum and licensed capacity of the storage folder. There is a
maximum capacity of 36 GB for HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition and a
maximum capacity of 8TB for HP Data Protector Express Software. Set Minimum free disk space
to 2048 (or a value that ensures you will have sufficient space for the backup).
7. This creates a new folder using the chosen location on disk. The Virtual Library is then configured
with virtual media drives and virtual storage slots. When using a media rotation scheme for backup, it
is sensible to have sufficient virtual storage slots to cover the number of media in the rotation cycle.
We are creating a single one-time backup job, so we only need one slot. Change the Virtual storage
slots to 1 and keep the default of 1 Virtual media drive.
8. Click Next to go to the second and final Virtual Library Configuration screen. We will not change
any of the values on this screen. There are two tabs on this screen: Policy and
Encryption/Compression, which are only active if the D2D2Any option license is installed or the HP
Data Protector Express Software is running in evaluation mode. The D2DAny option requires that HP
Data Protector Express Software is installed, it is not an option with HP Data Protector Express
Software Single Server Edition. See the HP Data Protector Express Software User’s Guide and
Technical Reference for further details.

9. Now you are ready to create your backup job. Click Finish to exit the Create Virtual Library wizard.
A window confirms that the Virtual Library was created:
10. Click OK. To see the Virtual Library just created, click on Devices in the Favorites desk bar and
navigate down from the Network folder to see “My First Virtual Library”. For a different view, open
Folders in the Detail Area (by clicking on the Folders icon in the Toolbar).
NOTE: Our example also shows the Tape Device that we created in Tutorial 2, but it is now offline, as
indicated by the exclamation mark.

Create a disk backup job
This is the same process as the tape backup described in Tutorial 2. The difference is that the Virtual
Library, just configured, is the target device for the backup.
1. Run HP Data Protector Express Software and log in.
2. Select Wizards in the Favorites desk bar and double-click Backup in the Detail Area.
3. Double-click Backup Specific in the Detail Area.
4. At the Welcome prompt, give the backup job a name, such as “My First Disk Backup” and click Next.
5. Now you are ready to select folders and files for backup.
If necessary, open Folders in the Detail Area (by clicking on the Folders icon in the Toolbar) and
navigate down the network, machine, and file system to locate the folders and files that you wish to
back up, for example the Important Files folder.

Check the box to select the files and folders to be backed up. By checking the Important Files folder,
we are selecting all its sub-folders and the files in them.
TIP: Look at the Tasks and Information pane. Note how the Steps section shows all the steps in this
wizard and highlights your current position.
6. Now you need to select your virtual library for backup. Click Next to move to the Device Options
step. In this example we will select the virtual library that we have just created as the backup device.
NOTE: If you are running HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition, the device
selection defaults to the tape drive on the local machine. If you are running the full version of HP
Data Protector Express Software, there are no default selections. For our example, we want to specify
the virtual library for this job.

8. Click on the + to the left of VLD Devices to display all available virtual libraries. Select the virtual
library (the box is filled in). Devices to be used now contains only the virtual library.
NOTE: Once you have used a device in a backup job, that device will appear in the Devices list for
future jobs, even if it is no longer online. This allows you to create jobs for USB devices.
9. The location of the Media to be used defaults to the same location as the job that we are creating. So
does the New media location, which is the place, where the job will store the media if it creates a
new media.
NOTE: This folder hierarchy makes it easy to locate specific objects and we will not change these
defaults.
You do not need to change any other details on this screen.
10. Click Next to move to the Job Options step.
In Modes select:
Backup mode = Full
Auto verify mode = No verify
Write mode = Overwrite all media
Span mode = Restart file
Change mode = Prompt for another media
Ignore the Log options… and Advanced options… for this example.
11. Click Next to move to the Encryption/Compression step.

In the Encryption settings, select Off.
If your business requires you to use encryption, this screen allows you to set the required encryption
types and levels. See “How do I enable encryption?” in Tutorial 5. This option should be used with
care. It requires an Encryption passphrase. If you lose the passphrase, you will not be able to
recover your data.
In the Compression settings, select:
Software compression = Operating system
Enable hardware compression = not selected (not ticked)
12. Click Next to move to the Schedule Job step. Ensure Schedule type is Run now. A schedule for
repeating instances of the backup can be added later, if required. (Before you start the job, be sure all
files to be included in the backup are closed.)

13. Click Finish to complete and run the backup job. Click Yes at the prompt to see the new job
(command) in your Home folder.
14. If you have installed the Quick Access Control, hold the cursor over the HP Data Protector Express
Software icon in the Windows System tray, normally in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.
You can see that the job is running.
15. Alternatively, for a quick status overview of the job just run, from your Home folder select the My
First Disk Backup job and look at the information in the Details pane.

16. For more detailed information, click on Status in the Commands pane.
17. Watch the backup job until completion.
18. Click OK to close the Status dialogue of your backup job.
NOTE: You can also view job status by clicking Job Status in the Favorites desk bar, selecting the
name of your first backup job and look at the Details pane.

19. It is also good practice to check the logs and ensure that there were no problems. Click Recent Logs
in the Favorites desk bar. The most recently-run job is at the top of the list, but you can sort on any
column. See also “More about log pages” on page 25.
NOTE: If you see an alert in the Status bar at the bottom of the window, you should check what is
causing this. See “How do I find out what is causing alerts?” in Tutorial 5.
20. Select the log entry for the backup job, and double-click to open it. Scroll through the log to check
everything is OK. If the Next button is bold, there are additional pages to check. Click Close when
you have finished reading the log.
21. You have now created and run your first disk backup job.

Subsequent backups
Once you have created your backup (or any) job, it can be quickly and easily located again in your Home
folder. Before you start the job, be sure all files to be included in the backup are closed. Then select the
job and either right-click and select Run from the drop-down menu or click Run in the Commands pane.
(The job is in the Admin folder because we logged on as Administrator.)
NOTE: According to our settings, this will overwrite the media when you run the job again. If you do not
wish this to happen, you need to select a Write Mode of Append to all media in Job options.

Restore from disk
The following steps will enable you to carry out your first, simple restore to disk.
1. Run HP Data Protector Express Software and log in.
2. Select Wizards in the Favorites desk bar and Restore in the Detail Area.
3. Select the Restore Specific wizard.
4. At the Welcome prompt, give the restore job a name, such as “My First Restore from Disk” and click
Next.
5. Now you are ready to select folders and files for restore.
If necessary, open Folders in the Detail Area (by clicking on the Folders icon in the Toolbar) and
navigate down the network, machine, and filing system to locate the files that you included in your
first backup, for example, the Documents and Settings folder.

Check the box to select the files/folders to be restored. By checking the Important Files folder, we
are selecting all its sub-folders and the files in them.
6. For this first restore, we want to restore the files to a different location. This will allow you to
compare the original files with the restored files. To do this we need the move functionality. Click on
the Move icon in the toolbar.
7. We recommend that you create a new folder to hold the restored files. In the Select destination for
move operation dialog, select the C: drive (or other if more convenient) then click on the New
command. Enter a name for the folder to store the restored files and folders and click OK.
