... have you been trained
The law requires that personnel using this type of equipment in
the workplace must be competent and qualified to do so.
Training is available at HSS Training

Never push the equipment beyond its design limits. If it
will not do what you want with reasonable ease and speed,
assume you have the wrong equipment for the job. Contact
HSS Hire for advice.
Keep the equipment clean - you will find this less of a
chore if you clean it regularly, rather than wait until the end
of the hire period.
The shredder must not be cleaned with high pressure
cleaners or running water.
Clean the body of the machine thoroughly using a soft
brush and cloth. Do not use water, solvents or polishes.
Remove all grass and debris, especially from the
ventilation slots.
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere
clean, dry and secure.
EQUIPMENT CARE
FINISHING OFF
Switch the unit off and wait for moving parts to stop,
then unplug the unit from its power supply.
Empty the collection container.
Give the unit a final clean then neatly coil its power
supply cable ready for return to your local HSS Hire.
The inserted material will feed in automatically by the
cutter roller.
When shredding, listen to the motor. If it starts to slow
you are probably expecting it to shred too large a
quantity of waste at a time. Simply reduce the feed rate.
Only insert as much material so that the chute will not get
jammed.
Feed the waste into the top chute a piece at a time. Do not
insert anything thicker than 45mm.
Note: The inlet diameter of the shredder is limited, so the
material to be composted should not be forced through
the opening, but placed loosely in the shredder.
While shredding, observe the ventilation slots. Make sure
they are not covered by the shredded material.
If the shredder becomes clogged, the machine will stop after
few seconds. Press and hold the yellow
button to reverse the cutter and
unblock it. If the blockage cannot be
cleared the pressure plate will need to
be moved away from the cutter.
The adjustment knob will need a
little turn in an anti clock wise
direction until the “jammed”
material is clear. The pressure plate
will need adjustment.
Note: Branches become harder to shred depending on
the type, age and dryness of the wood.
For best results, shred fresh branches soon after they
have been cut.
Soft garden waste should be shredded in smaller loads,
particularly when wet. Any blockages can be avoided
by intermittently shredding branches.
PRESSURE PLATE ADJUSTMENT
The pressure plate is already adjusted
by HSS Hire and will not require
adjustment before the first use.
However adjustment of the pressure
plate is necessary as a result of wear.

WARNING
AVOID BLOCKING THE DISCHARGE CHUTE WITH
SHREDDED MATERIAL AS THIS COULD RESULT IN
KICKBACK OF MATERIAL THROUGH THE CHUTE
OPENING.
With the motor running in the
forward direction (green button),
turn the adjustment knob a small
amount at a time in a clock wise
direction until a
light grinding sound can be heard
(the cutting roller cuts the pressure
plate to the proper clearance, and
some small aluminium shavings fall
out of the ejection chute).
To check, look for shavings in the collection container.
Re-adjust only to the required extent, otherwise the
pressure plate could wear unnecessarily.
When the machine doesn't start, simply switch the tool
off and on again. If this doesn’t solve the problem
check the electric supply, for example, by plugging in
and starting another appliance. Check the supply cord
and extension cord. Replace extension cord if found
damaged. If machine cord is damaged, don’t try to fix
this tool, return to HSS Hire.
If the shredder fails to operate, usually this is because
the collection container or chute are not fitted
correctly. The machine is fitted with sensors, unless
they are fitted correctly, the machine will not start and
the buzzer will beep and 2 LED indicators will flash.
When the material to be shredded is not pulled in, it is
usually caused by waste being wet or very soft. Use the
prodder to push material into the machine.
Machine may stop working, if the material is jammed.
Clear jammed waste by using the reverse button. If the
blockage cannot be cleared move the pressure plate
away from the cutter.
When shredded material is not completely separated
and sticks together, the pressure plate may require
adjustment.

GENERAL SAFETY
IDENTIFIER
GETTING STARTED
Never use the HSS Electric Shredder until you have fully
read and understood this User Guide and the machine
has been properly set up using the information it contains.
HSS Electric Shredder is designed for cutting garden
waste and wood for composting.
The collection box is intended for collecting shredded
waste. It may also be used for storing the chute assembly
and prodder.
Before operating the shredder check the material you are
going to use. Foreign material such as stones, glass,
metals, fabrics or plastics must not enter the chute, as
they may damage the cutting roller.
Place the unit on firm level ground in open space, away
from structures.
Fit the collection container and position the chute.
The machine is fitted with sensors, unless the collection
box is fitted correctly and the chute is correctly
positioned, the machine will not start and the buzzer will
beep.
Check the power cable for damage before switching on.
Plug in shredder to power supply. You
can start operating the machine by
pressing green button.
Do not attempt to shred metal or plastic items, this
machine is only for garden waste!
Do not exceed the units maximum diameter capacity.
Use the top chute entry for items up to 45mm.
If the cutting mechanism strikes any foreign object or if
the machine should start making any unusual noise or
vibration, immediately switch off and allow the cutter
to stop.
Watch your footing. Take special care if working other
than on firm, level ground.
Do not overreach.
Always check the collection container and empty it
regularly. Do not allow processed material to build up.
This may prevent proper discharge which can result in
kickback of material through the chute assembly.
Keep the motor cooling vents clean of debris and other
accumulations to prevent damage to the motor or
possible fire.
Before switching on, make sure all the machine’s parts
are put together correctly. Check that all screws, nuts,
bolts and other fasteners are properly secured and that
guards and screens are in place.
Check that there are no damaged or missing elements.
If it shows signs of damage or excessive wear return the
shredder to HSS Hire.
Do not try to repair or modify the equipment. If this tool
can’t do what you expect or fails to work return to HSS Hire.
Do not expose the machine to rain. Store the machine in
a dry place.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
The HSS Electric Shredder plugs into a standard 230V
13amp power socket.
If the equipment fails, or if its power supply cable or plug
becomes damaged, return it. Never try to repair it yourself.
Keep cables out of harm’s way, and clear of the work area.
When necessary, use only extension cords of a type
approved for the application and with conductors of
adequate cross section. The power tool may otherwise
lose performance and the extension cord may overheat.
Extension leads should be fully unwound and loosely
coiled, away from the equipment.
Check the extension cord for damage at regular
intervals. Replace damaged extension cords.
Never run them through water, over sharp edges or
where they could trip someone.
When working outdoors, use only extension cords that
are approved and correspondingly marked for this
application.
Never touch the plug or socket with wet hands.
Always remove the plug from the current socket before
undertaking any type of intervention on the HSS Electric
Shredder or if it is left unattended or within children or
people’s reach not quite conscious of their own actions.
Always before removing the plug, switch off the
machine.
Always when unplugging pull the plug, not the supply.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, always use a
suitable RCD (Residual Current-Operated Device)
available from HSS Hire.
Ensure the machine and power socket are switched OFF
before plugging into the power supply.
SHREDDING WASTE
NORMAL GARDEN WASTE AND SMALL TWIGS CAN BE
