1�2 Introduction
This technical manual contains important information
about the Automower® 305 robotic lawnmower and its
function, how you install it and a number of installation
examples. It also contains information about special
menu functions which are available with the mower,
the Autocheck Experience service program, repair
instructions and trouble shooting.
To make it easier to follow, the following structure is
used:
• Text that is written in italics is a text that is shown in
the mower’s display or in menus in the Autocheck
Experience service program. A reference to another
section of the technical manual is also shown in
italics.
• Words that are written in bold represent one of
the keys on the mower’s keypad or a key in the
Autocheck Experience service program.
• Words that are written in UPPER-CASE in italics
are the main switch’s position and the different
operating modes that are available with the mower.

1�4 Software
The behaviour of Husqvarna’s Automower® 305 robotic
lawnmower is controlled by microprocessors and
software. There is an MSW-program (Main SoftWare),
an MMI-program (Man Machine Interface) and a SSW-
program (Subsystem SoftWare).
The main program (MSW) interprets the signals from
the sensors and controls the operation accordingly.
The MMI-program checks the presentation of informa-
tion in the display and the inputting of, for example, key
strokes on the keypad. The MMI-program contains the
texts that are shown in the display.
The SSW-program controls the blade motor, among
other functions.
This Technical Manual for the Automower® 305 deals
with version 1.00.00 of the main program and 1.10.00
of the MMI-program.
1�4�1 Ascertaining the program version
1. Set the main switch to position 1.
2. When the start page is displayed: Keep the
button 0 pressed in for two seconds to go to
Quick Check.
3. Select Info and press OK.
4. Select General and press OK.
5. The main program’s version is indicated on the
line that starts MSW ver:, e.g. 1.00.00.
The MMI-program’s version is indicated on the
line that starts MMI ver:, e.g. 1.10.00.
The SSW-program’s version is indicated on the
line that starts SSW ver:, e.g. 1.00.00.
6. Keep the Arrow back button pressed in for two
seconds to leave Quick Check and go to the
main menu.
It is important that Automower® 305 is
programmed with the latest versions of
the programs. Husqvarna is continuously
improving the mower’s behaviour and
performance, which results in new versions of
programs.

1�5 Mowing technique
The mowing system is based on an efcient and
energy saving principle. Unlike conventional
lawn mowers, Husqvarna’s Automower® robotic
lawnmower cuts the grass instead of knocking it off.
1�5�1 Mowing in different weather
conditions
Rain
We recommend you primarily use the Automower®
305 in dry weather to obtain the best possible results.
Automower® 305 can also mow in the rain, however,
wet grass easily collects on the mower and there is a
greater risk of it slipping on steep slopes.
Thunder
If there is a risk of thunder, all connections to the
charging station should be disconnected.
1�5�2 Blades
It is important to have sharp, well-maintained blades
on a robotic mower, more important than on a
conventional lawn mower. This is due to the principle
of the Automower® 305 cutting the grass instead of
knocking it off. The life of the blades is increased as
a result of the double-ground blades in conjunction
with the technology that rotates the blade disc in both
directions.
In order to keep the blades sharp for as long as
possible it is important to keep the lawn free from
branches, small stones and other objects.
Blunt knives made of stainless steel should not be
ground or sharpened. This is to prevent the mowing
system from becoming imbalanced.
Poor or dull blades can result in the grass bending
instead of being mown, the tops become frayed and
the mower may nd it difcult to mow a large working
area.
All ve blades and screws must be replaced at the
same time to ensure the cutting system is balanced.
Blades are available in several different types and are
sold in various quantities. Use Husqvarna AB approved
blades only. From the start of 2011 these are marked
with a Husqvarna symbol.
1�5�3 Irregular mowing pattern
The Automower® 305 mows the lawn in an irregular
pattern. This gives a very even mowing result. In
addition, there are no distinctive tracks left in the lawn,
which is often the case when using a conventional lawn
mower.

1�6 The loop system’s control
signals
The loop system consists of a boundary wire and
a guide cable connected to the charging station.
Together they essentially comprise three different
signals:
• A-signal
• F-signal
• Guide-signal
To check the A-, F- and Guide-signals, see Loop
(5-1-3).
• A-signal
The signal that the charging station transmits
over the loop and which demarcates the
working area for the Automower® 305.
Coded information is transmitted via the
A-signal to the mower.
• When there is no A-signal, for example if
there is a break in the boundary wire or in
the power supply to the charging station,
the Automower® 305 stops and displays the
message “No loop signal”.
• F-signal
Remote signal from the charging station
which has a range of 2-3 metres. The signal
is generated by the large coil in the charging
station plate. The F-signal is used so that
the mower knows that it in the vicinity of the
charging station.
If there is no F-signal, the Automower®
cannot nd the charging station. The mower
will eventually stop and display the message
“Low battery voltage”.
• Guide-signal
The signal that the charging station transmits
through the guide cable. The guide-signals
lead the mower to the charging station,
but can also be used to direct the mower
to a remote area. Guide is marked as the
connection on the rear of the charging
station.
If there is no Guide-signal, the Automower®
is not able to follow the guide cable and
therefore not able to nd the charging station
either. The mower will eventually stop and
display the message “Low battery voltage”.
1�7 The loop system’s status
The loop system’s status is most easily checked
using the LED in the charging station. Check the loop
signal by inspecting the LED indicators.
• Continuous green light = All signals are OK.
• Blue ashing light = No signal in the
boundary wire (A-signal). Most likely a break
in the boundary wire.
• Yellow ashing light = No signal in the guide
wire. Most likely a break in the guide wire.
• Red ashing light = No F-signal. Most likely
interruption in the charging station’s antenna
plate
• Continuous blue light = Weak signal in the
boundary wire (A-signal). This may depend
on the boundary wire being over 250 m in
length or that the wire is damaged. If the
mower still works, this is not a problem.
• Continuous red light = fault in a circuit board
in the charging station.

1�8 Boundary wire
The strength of the signal in the boundary wire is
constant in a loop that is up to approx. 250 metres in
length. If, however, the loop is longer than 250 metres,
the strength can start to diminish, even though it is still
sufcient.
The strength of the loop signal varies depending on
the distance to the cable. The strength of the signal is
high right next to the cable. The strength subsequently
diminishes the farther away from the cable you get.
More than 15 metres from the loop, the signal is
normally too weak for Automower® 305. Outside the
loop the signal is negative and its strength diminishes
more rapidly. The signal from the boundary wire is
designated the A-signal. See the illustration below for
examples of high and low signal strengths.
The strength of the A-signal also varies along the
boundary wire depending on the proximity to other
parts of the loop. The strength of the signal is affected
by the size of the working area, islands, headlands,
passages and corners. The signal can also be
affected by magnetic objects in the ground or in
nearby walls and buildings. The signal is weakened
in these areas. Examples of magnetic objects are
iron fences, iron girders and reinforcement bars.
Grass areas laid on concrete roofs can therefore
receive a weakened signal.
When the signal is reinforced or weakened, it is
normal that respectively low and high strength in
the signal is not always available along the entire
boundary wire.
The loop signal’s reception and amplication in the
mower can also vary by +/- 10% from one mower
to another. This means that at the same point in
an installation, one mower can display A=90 and
another one A=100. The charging station’s circuit
board and the mower’s loop sensor can give certain
variations between different machines.
If the mower does not detect sufcient strength in
the loop signal when it leaves the charging station to
enable it to follow the guide to a remote area, it will
instead start cutting at once.

1�9 Guide wire
The guide cable, together with the part of the boundary
wire that comprises the return to the charging station,
is called the guide wire. The current in the guide wire
always goes from the guide cable to the left in the
connection between guide cable and boundary wire.
The strength of the guide signal varies like the
A-signal depending on the distance to the guide
wire. Inside the guide wire the signal is positive and
the strength subsequently diminishes the farther
from away the cable you get. Outside the guide wire
the signal is negative and the strength of the signal
diminishes more rapidly. The area inside the guide
wire is designated the guide area. Automower® 305
always tracks the left side of the guide cable in the
direction towards the charging station, i.e. the mower
follows the negative values on the guide signal.
The strength of the signal in the guide wire depends
on the loop’s length. The guide wire must therefore
not be longer than approx. 250 metres.
The longer the guide wire, the lower the strength of
the signal and the more difcult it is for Automower®
305 to track the guide cable. If the strength of the
signal is too low, the Automower® 305 can, at an outer
edge for example, stop following the guide cable.
The strength of the guide signal also varies along
the guide loop depending on the proximity to other
parts of the guide wire and is affected by islands,
headlands, passages and corners.
To reduce the risk of the mower losing contact with
the cable in corners, it is recommended that the
cable is not laid in 90 degree angles. It is better to lay
the cable in 2 x 135 degree angles.
1�10 Guide width
Guide width is a measure of how far from the guide
cable the mower is allowed to travel when it is following
it to and from the charging station. The area beside the
wire which the mower then uses is called the corridor.
There are three possible settings for guide width:

With a Wide guide width the Automower® 305 mows
at various distances to the guide cable at different
charging cycles. A garden that is open and free of
narrow passages should have a wide corridor to
minimise the risk of tracks forming.
With a Medium guide width the Automower® 305
mows at various distances to the guide wire at
different charging cycles, but not as far away from
the guide wire as is the case when Wide is selected.
The medium corridor setting should be selected for a
garden with obstacles close to the guide cable and/or
passages that do not allow for a wide corridor.
With a Narrow guide width, Automower® 305 runs
straight over the guide cable. Narrow is not normally
recommended, but in a garden with one or a number
of narrow passages, a narrow corridor may be the
only option. The narrow corridor setting increases
the risk of tracks forming along the guide wire. With
this setting the mower can traverse passages down
to 100 cm if the passage is bounded by trenches, or
120 cm if the passage is bounded by walls.
The Automower® 305 has a default setting of
Medium guide width. In general as wide a corridor as
possible should be used. Besides the fact that there
is less risk of tracks forming, it is then also easier for

Automower® 305 to follow the guide cable. If, on the
other hand there are narrow passages in the working
areas that Automower® 305 has to negotiate, it is
necessary to use a narrower corridor.
1�11 Searching methods to nd the
charging station
When the charge level in the battery has fallen to
300 mAh or the voltage in the battery has fallen to
17.7 volts, the Automower® 305 switches off the
blade motor and starts to search for the charging
station.
Automower® 305 always follows the guide cable
to nd the charging station. When the mower has
to move towards the charging station the following
happens:
1. Automower® 305 searches for the guide
cable by moving in an irregular pattern.
2. When the guide cable has been found the
mower positions itself directly over the cable,
facing towards the charging station.
3. If Medium or Wide guide width is selected,
the mower rst travels an irregularly selected
route away from the guide wire. The length
of the section is determined by the guide
width. The mower then runs in parallel with
the guide cable towards the charging station.
If guide width Narrow is selected the mower
travels directly towards the charging station.
4. When the mower reaches the F-eld
(F-value 85-100) it reverses in towards the
guide cable and positions itself directly over
the cable, with its rear towards the charging
station. The distance from the charging
station where the mower reverses towards
the guide cable is irregularly selected in
order to minimise wear to the lawn.
If Narrow guide width is selected, the mower
turns 180 degrees directly over the guide
cable when it senses the F-eld.
5. The mower reverses towards the charging
station and docks.
If Automower® 305 encounters an obstacle when it is
following the guide cable, it deviates from the guide
cable and starts looking for the guide cable again. When
it next nds the guide cable it selects another distance at
which to follow it.
1�12 Docking and charging
When the mower enters the charging station, this is
called docking.
When the charging strips on the Automower® 305 make
contact with the contact strips on the charging station,
the mower stops and charging begins.

1�13 Battery
The Automower® 305 is equipped with a Lithium-Ion
battery. Compared with a NiMH, for example, Li-
Ion has very good properties, even at high ambient
temperatures. The battery also has low self-discharge,
i.e. it can remain unused for a longer period than, for
example, NiMH without being damaged. Counted
in number of charging cycles, the service life is also
expected to be longer for Li-Ion than NiMH.
Charging is mainly controlled by the transformer.
Normal charge current is 1.0 A. When the voltage
in the battery approaches the nominal voltage of
21.0 V the physical properties in the battery cause
the charge current to decrease. When the charge
current has fallen to 0.3 A, the mower is considered
to be fully charged and charging is terminated. When
the battery is fully charged a rest phase of approx.
60 minutes commences in which the battery is
allowed to cool. This is to ensure maximum service
life for the battery.
Charging is discontinued when the battery has 80%
of its total capacity. Charging the battery to 100%
would reduce the service life of the battery. The
most rational way of using Li-Ion is therefore to stop
charging at 80%.
The maximum capacity utilised is thus 1.2 Ah and not
1.6 Ah which is the battery’s total capacity.
6.6 Battery test on page 80 describes how the
battery’s condition can be measured.
1�14 Sensors
There are several different types of sensor in the
mower. Collision sensor (1), tilt sensor (2) and lift
sensor (3) have the task of protecting both mower
and user. Rear (4) and front (5) loop sensors are
used to control the mower within the working area,
to position the mower when docking, track the guide
wire, etc.
1�14�1 Collision sensor
The collision sensor is the sensor that detects when
the mower has run into a xed object. When the
sensor is activated, i.e. the mower collides with an
object, the mower waits, reverses and then turns to
continue in a different direction. The body’s motion
in relation to the mower’s chassis is detected by a
sensor on the control box via a magnet on the body.
1�14�2 Tilt sensor
The tilt sensor is the sensor that detects the mower’s
inclination in relation to the horizontal plane. X-angle
indicates the incline forward - back, and the Y-angle
indicates the incline left - right. The value from
the incline sensor is used, among other things, to
compensate the operation of the wheel motors when
mowing on slopes.
1�14�3 Lift sensor
The lift sensor is the sensor that senses whether
the mower is being raised off the ground. This is
done with the help of the mechanical structure and
a magnet in the body at the front of the mower. If
the “lift” signal is indicated, the mower and the blade
disc stop immediately. The mower will then try to
free itself of the obstacle that caused it to lift off the
ground by backing up and turning several times.

2�2 Quick check
Quick check is a display mode where you can
quickly see information about program versions,
battery, loop signals, sensors and operating history.
When the start page or the main menu is displayed:
Press and hold down the 0 key for ve seconds to
access the “Quick check” function.
Quick check is divided into Info and History. Info
displays current status and History displays operating
history regarding messages and search times saved.
Browse among the menus using Arrow down and
press OK to select the required function. Keep the
Arrow back button pressed in for two seconds to
leave the Quick Check function and go to the main
menu.
2�2�1 Info
Display mode General shows:
• Main program type: In this case 305.
• MSW-version: The version of the MSW
(Main Software)program (also called the
main program), e.g. 1.00.00.
• MSW Date: Date of issue of MSW, in the
format YYYY-MM-DD.
• MMI-version: The version of the MMI (Man
Machine Interface)program, e.g. 1.10.00.
• SSW-version: The version of the SSW
(Subdevice Software)program, e.g. 1.00.00.
• S/N: The mower’s serial number. This
number must correspond with the serial
number on the mower’s rating plate which is
located inside the cover.
• Production: The mower’s date of
manufacture in the format YYYY-MM-DD.
The display mode Battery shows:
• Voltage: The battery’s current voltage
level. A value of about 21V indicates a fully
charged battery and about 18V indicates a
discharged battery.
• No of chargings: The accumulated number
of charges where the battery has been fully
charged.
• Charge level: Shows the charge remaining
in the battery. When the battery is fully
charged, the charge is approximately
1200 mAh. When the charge has dropped to
approximately 300 mAh the mower returns
to the charging station.
• Current: Shows nominal regulated charge
current to and from the battery. A positive
value indicates that the battery is charging
and a negative value indicates that the
mower is using current from the battery.
• Temp: Shows current temperature in the
battery.
The display mode Loop shows:
• Signal quality: The loop signals can only be
interpreted if the value for Quality is 100%.
If the value is 99% or lower, the loop system
does not function correctly and thus neither
are the values displayed for the signals
correct.
• A-signal, front: The strength of the A-signal
measured via the front loop sensor on
the mower. The value should lie between
approximately 40 and 120 to ensure good
functionality. The closer to the loop the
mower is, the higher the value. When the

Automower® 305 is directly over the loop
the value is 0 and when the mower is
outside of the loop the value is negative.
• A-signal, rear: The strength of the A-signal
measured via the rear loop sensor on the
mower.
• F-signal: The strength of the F-signal
measured via the front loop sensor. If the
mower is in test position the value for the
F-signal should be between -100 and -300.
• Guide signal: To ensure good functionality in
the guide wire, the value for the Guide signal
should be (-) 70 - 120 beside the guide wire.
The display mode Sensors shows:
• Collision: One way of testing the collision
sensor is to hold the mower chassis in the
stop button and move the body forward and
back in the handle on the rear. The display
shows Yes or NO. Continue to press on the
body until you see that the collision sensor
works.
• Lifted: To test the lift sensor, lift up the front
part of the body. When the body is lifted up
the lift sensor is activated and the mower’s
display shows YES. When the mower is in
lowered position NO is displayed.
• Tilted forward: When the Automower® 305
is standing horizontally the value should
be max ±3. When the fron t wheels are
positioned higher than the rear wheel the
value is positive.
• Tilted lateral: When the Automower® 305
is standing horizontally the value should
be max ±3. Inclination to the right gives a
positive value.
• Normal position: YES indicates that the
mower is standing in normal position and
NO that the mower is upside down.
2�2�2 History
In display mode Messages the last 20 messages
can be read. The list of messages can also be
cleared.
The display mode By date shows for each message:
• Position in the message list, e.g. 1.
• Message number. Each message has
a language-independent number. E.g.
message Lift has number 15.
• Message title
• Date and time when the message was set.
By pressing the multi-choice button for the question
mark, where appropriate a list of possible reasons
that the message was set is displayed. For most
messages there are several possible reasons and
suggested actions in the 6 Trouble shooting chapter
on page 64.
Display mode Search times shows:
• Search times: Lists the number of minutes it
took the mower to nd the charging station
from the time the search began until the
mower arrived at the charging station. In
total, the times from the past 12 searches
are displayed.

2�3 Ascertain the PIN code
If you have forgotten the PIN code for an
Automower® 305 or when a mower is blocked
because an incorrect code has been entered, you
can nd out the right code. In the input mode for PIN
code, or when the main menu is displayed: Hold
down the 9 key for ve seconds, a combination of
twelve letters and the mower’s serial number will
then be displayed.
If the mower is locked for a while due to an
incorrectly entered PIN code, you have to wait
before making another attempt before the letter
combination can be read.
The letter combination can be different in different
attempts on the same mower with the same PIN
code.
Contact the national service organisation and state
the letter combination and serial number. They can
then identify the right PIN code.
Press Arrow back to exit the function.
2�4 Tools menu
Besides the four main menu selections that are
described in the Operator’s Manual for Automower®
305, there is an additional one called Tools. The Tools
menu includes the possibility of testing a mower’s
components and information about different operating
data.
To display the Tools menu:
1. Go to the main menu.
2. Press and simultaneously hold down the
buttons 7 and 9 for two seconds.
The text Expert mode will be displayed for
one second. A fth main menu selection then
becomes available, illustrated with an icon in
the form of a cogwheel.
To hide the Tools menu:
1. Go to the main menu.
2. Press and simultaneously hold down the
buttons 7 and 9.
The text Standard mode will be displayed for
one second and then disappear. The main
menu will subsequently only contain the four
standard options.
The Tools menu will also disappear the next time the
main switch is turned off and on.
