Advisories
Three types of advisories are used throughout the manual to stress important points or warn of potential
hazards to the user or the system. They are the Note, the Caution, and theWarning. Following is an example
of each type of advisory:
Note: The note is used to present special instruction, or to provide extra information which may
help to simplify the use of the product.
CAUTION!
A Caution is used to alert you to a situation which if ignored may cause injury or
damage equipment.
WARNING!
AWarningisusedtoalertyouofasituationwhichifignoredwillcauseseriousinjury.
Cautions and Warnings are accented with triangular symbols. The exclamation symbol is used in all cautions
and warnings to help alert you to the important instructions. The lightning flash symbol is used on the left
hand side of a caution or a warning if the advisory relates to the presence of voltage which may be of
sufficient magnitude to cause electrical shock.
Use caution when servicing any electrical component. We have tried to identify the areas which may pose
a Caution or Warning condition in this manual; however, ICS Advent does not claim to have covered all
situations which might require the use of a Caution or Warning.
You must refer to the documentation for any component you install into a computer system to ensure proper
precautions and procedures are followed.

Chapter 1: Installation
Manual Number: 00650-130-2 Page 1-1
Chapter 1: Installation
The RB-24 Series cards installed external to the host computer. The card is supplied with four
0.375" stand-offs and may be installed on user-supplied panels/chassis. The card provides headers
for both 37- and 50-conductor ribbon cable connection to the host computer and screw terminal
terminations for the relay outputs. Silk-screen labels on the board identify the relay elements to
which they connect. The screw terminals used can accommodate wire sizes as large as #14 AWG.
To ensure that there is minimum susceptibility to EMI and minimum radiation, it is important that
EMI cabling and break-out techniques be used. (cable conected to ground at the aperture of the
digital I/O card that will provide signals, twisted pair wiring, etc.)
Power Connections
Connector J3 is provided for easy application of +5 VDC computer power via a quick disconnect
cable from the computer power bus. Screw terminals are also provided for 5-volt external power to
the card at TB13. (Note: Jumper JP1 must be installed if you intend to apply power through the
screw terminals.) Alternatively, when the AC Power option is installed, JP1 should not be installed
and the AC power is applied at TB13.
The following page illustrates the layout of the RB-24.
Configurations
RBAC-24: Signifies that the card is configured for 115 VAC power input. When this
option is installed, AC power must be applied at TB13 as described above.
Also, IC drivers U1, U3, U4, U6, U7, and U9 are omitted.
/DP: The /DP option provides DPDT relay outputs.

Chapter 2: Functional Description
Manual Number: 00650-130-2 Page 2-1
Chapter 2: Functional Description
The Model RB-24 is a twenty-four channel electromechanical relay output accessory card. On-
board amplifiers allow the relays to be driven by any 24-bit group of any of our PCDIO Series
digital I/O card or from other manufacturers LSTTL or NMOS/CMOS-compatible digital output
cards that use 37 or 50-pin connections compatible with the pin connections listed later in this
manual. When an input bit is high, the associated relay is energized and a red LED associated with
each relay glows when that relay is actuated.
SPDT Form C relays are standard but DPDT Form C relays are an available option. The relays
used are UL-recognized, non-latching, polarized units designed to FCC Part 68 isolation require-
ments and can switch up to three amperes current into a resistive load at voltages up to 120 VAC
(rms).
The card is normally powered by +5 VDC external power but an option is available for 115 VAC,
60 Hz external power. In both cases, screw terminals are provided for termination of input power
connections.
As mentioned earlier, either card may be interfaced to any 24-bit port of PCDIO Series card. Relay

Controlling RB-24
Programming RB-24 is done by simple OUT statements. For example, if the card is to be con-
trolled by an Model PCDIO24-P located at base address hex 310, BASIC statements would be as
follows:
10 OUT &H313,&H80 Sets the ports to use as outputs
20 OUT &H310,1 Activates Port A, bit 0 (Relay 0)
30 OUT &H311,16 Activates Port B, bit 4 (Relay 21)
Alternatively, any parallel, TTL-compatible, source can be used to drive the relays and would be
programmed according to instructions provided by the manufacturer. Please assure that the pin-out
and cable configuration is compatible with the RB-24 pin assignments listed on the following
pages.

ADDENDUM
IRQGEN.VXD and Win32IRQ.DLL
IRQGEN.VXD
Description
IRQGEN.VXD is a Virtual Device Driver, or VxD, for Windows95. Together with
Win32IRQ.DLL, it allows a program to easily respond to hardware interrupt requests, or IRQs.
Installation
To install IRQGEN.VXD, copy it to C:\Windows\System. If your hard drive has a letter other than
C, substitute the appropriate letter. It is not necessary to reboot your system prior to using
IRQGEN.VXD.
Win32IRQ.DLL
Description
Win32IRQ.DLL is a Dynamic Link Library, of DLL, for Windows95. It provides a simple interface
to IRQGEN.VXD, allowing a program to easily respond to hardware interrupts. Three functions are
exported by Win32IRQ.DLL: InitIRQ,, Detect IRQ, and SendEOI. To use these functions in a
program, they must first be inported. In Pascal, the necessary lines would be:
function InitIRQ (MyIRQ: Byte) : Boolean; stdcall;external 'Win32IRQ.dll'
index 1;
function DetectIRQ: Boolean; stdcall; external "Win32IRQ.dll"index 2;
function SendEOI: Boolean; stdcall; external "Win32IRQ.dll" index 3;
In C, the library file Win32IRQ.lib must first be linked to the program. This is accomplished by
adding it to the project or editing the makefile. The following lines would then create the prototypes
for the DLL functions:
extern "c" _declspec (dllimport) bool pascal InitIRQ (unsigned char MyIRQ);
extern "c" _declspec (dllimport) bool pascal DetectIRQ (void);
extern "c" _declspec (dllimport) bool pascal SendEOI (void) ;
InitIRQ
This function performs the initialization required to detect IRQs. It must be called before
DetectIRQand SendEOI can be called, although calling those functions first will only cause them to
return a value of FALSE. The function's sole parameter is an unsigned 8-bit value containing the
IRQ number to monitor. The return result is TRUE if initialization was compledted successfully,
FALSE if not.

Page 2
DetectIRQ
This function suspends the thread that it was called from and waits for an IRQ to occur on the IRQ
number that was passed to InitIRQ. DetectIRQ will return immediately, however, if an IRQ occured
anytime before the DetectIRQ call, as long as an IRQ number was initialized with InitIRQ.
Otherwise, DetectIRQ will not return until an IRQ occurs. If the program needs to continue running
while waithing for DetectIRQ, a separate thread should be spawned from which to call DetectIRQ.
The return result is TRUE if an IRQ was successfully detected on the given IRQ number, FALSE if
no IRQ was initialized before the call. There are no parameters.
SendEOI
This function sends an end of interrupt message to the VxD. It must be called after an IRQ is
detected of the interrupt will remain in the system. The return result is TRUE if the EOI message
was successfully sent, FALSE if not. There are no parameters.
