There is nothing complicated about operating and maintaining your Thermo
King unit, but a ew minutes studying this manual will be time well spent.
Per orming pre-trip checks and enroute inspections on a regular basis will
minimize operating problems. A regular maintenance program will also help
to keep your unit in top operating condition. I actory recommended
procedures are ollowed, you will ind that you have purchased the most
e icient and dependable temperature control system available.
All service requirements, major and minor, should be handled by a Thermo
King dealer or our very important reasons:
• They are equipped with the actory recommended tools to per orm all
service unctions
• They have actory trained and certi ied technicians
• They have genuine Thermo King replacement parts
• The warranty on your new unit is valid only when the repair and
replacement o component parts is per ormed by an authorized Thermo
King dealer

Thermo King®recommends that all service be per ormed by a Thermo King
dealer and to be aware o several general sa ety practices.
Sa ety advisories appear throughout this manual as required. Your personal
sa ety and the proper operation o this unit depend upon the strict
observance o these precautions.

avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

General Safety Practices

Keep hands and loose clothing clear o ans and belts at all times when the
unit is operating with the doors open.
WWAARRNNIINNGG
RRiisskk oo IInnjjuurryy!!
Do not apply heat to a closed cooling system. Be ore applying heat to a
cooling system, drain it. Then lush it with water and drain the water.
Anti reeze contains water and ethylene glycol. The ethylene glycol is
lammable and can ignite i the anti reeze is heated enough to boil o the
water.

Exposed coil ins can cause lacerations. Service work on the evaporator or
condenser coils is best le t to a certi ied Thermo King technician.
Automatic Start/Stop Operation

The unit can start and run automatically any time the unit is turned on. Turn
the Microprocessor On/O switch O be ore doing inspections or working
on any part o the unit. Please note that only Quali ied and Certi ied
personnel should attempt to service your Thermo King unit.
Electrical Hazard

Dangerous three phase AC electric power is present whenever the unit is
operating in either Diesel Mode or Electric Mode and whenever the unit is
connected to a source o external standby power. Voltages o this
magnitude can be lethal. Exercise extreme caution when working on the
unit.
Battery Installation and Cable Routing

An improperly installed battery could result in a ire, explosion, or injury. A
Thermo King approved battery must be installed and properly secured to
the battery tray.

Improperly installed battery cables could result in a ire, explosion, or
injury. Battery cables must be installed, routed, and secured properly to
prevent them rom rubbing, cha ing, or making contact with hot, sharp, or
rotating components.

Do not attach uel lines to battery cables or electrical harnesses. This has
the potential to cause a ire and could cause serious injury or death.

A battery can be dangerous. A battery contains a lammable gas that can
ignite or explode. A battery stores enough electricity to burn you i it
discharges quickly. A battery contains battery acid that can burn you.
Always wear goggles or sa ety glasses and personal protective equipment
when working with a battery. I you get battery acid on you, immediately
lush it with water and get medical attention.

Always cover battery terminals to prevent them rom making contact with
metal components during battery installation. Battery terminals grounding
against metal could cause the battery to explode.

Set all unit electrical controls to the OFF position be ore connecting battery
cables to the battery to prevent unit rom starting unexpectedly and causing
personal injury.

Do not connect other manu acturer’s equipment or accessories to the unit
unless approved by Thermo King. Failure to do so can result in severe
damage to equipment and void the warranty.
Refrigerant
Although luorocarbon re rigerants are classi ied as sa e, use caution when
working with re rigerants or in areas where they are being used.

Re rigerant in the presence o an open lame, spark, or electrical short
produces toxic gases that are severe respiratory irritants which can cause
serious injury or possible death.

RRee rriiggeerraanntt VVaappoorr HHaazzaarrdd!!
Do not inhale re rigerant. Use caution when working with re rigerant or a
re rigeration system in any con ined area with a limited air supply.
Re rigerant displaces air and can cause oxygen depletion, resulting in
su ocation and possible death.

PPeerrssoonnaall PPrrootteeccttiivvee EEqquuiippmmeenntt ((PPPPEE)) RReeqquuiirreedd!!
Re rigerant in a liquid state evaporates rapidly when exposed to the
atmosphere, reezing anything it contacts. Wear butyl lined gloves and
other clothing and eye wear when handling re rigerant to help prevent
rostbite.

Observe the ollowing precautions when working with or around re rigerant
oil:

Protect your eyes rom contact with re rigerant oil. The oil can cause serious
eye injuries. Protect skin and clothing rom prolonged or repeated contact
with re rigerant oil. To prevent irritation, wash your hands and clothing
thoroughly a ter handling the oil. Rubber gloves are recommended.

•EEyyeess:: For contact with liquid, immediately lush eyes with large amounts
o water and get prompt medical attention.
•SSkkiinn:: Flush area with large amounts o warm water. Do not apply heat.
Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wrap burns with dry, sterile,
bulky dressing to protect rom in ection. Get prompt medical attention.
Wash contaminated clothing be ore reuse.
•IInnhhaallaattiioonn:: Move victim to resh air and use Cardio Pulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) or mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to restore
breathing, i necessary. Stay with victim until emergency personnel
arrive.
•FFrroosstt BBiittee:: In the event o rost bite , the objectives o First Aid are to
protect the rozen area rom urther injury, warm the a ected area
rapidly, and to maintain respiration.

Take IMMEDIATE action a ter a person has received an electrical shock. Get
quick medical assistance, i possible.
The source o the shock must be quickly stopped, by either shutting o the
power or removing the victim. I the power cannot be shut o , the wire
should be cut with an non-conductive tool, such as a wood-handle axe or
thickly insulated cable cutters. Rescuers should wear insulated gloves and
sa ety glasses, and avoid looking at wires being cut. The ensuing lash can
cause burns and blindness.
I the victim must be removed rom a live circuit, pull the victim away with a
non-conductive material. Use wood, rope, a belt or coat to pull or push the
victim away rom the current. DO NOT TOUCH the victim. You will receive a
shock rom current lowing through the victim’s body. A ter separating the
victim rom power source, immediately check or signs o a pulse and
respiration. I no pulse is present, start Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
(CPR). I a pulse is present, respiration might be restored by using mouth-to-
mouth resuscitation. Call or emergency medical assistance.

High Voltage Components
Various components on the Precedent unit operate using 220/3/60 or 460/3/
60 high voltage and are identi ied by warning nameplates. All high voltage
wiring is identi ied by ORANGE conduit. Be aware o the locations o these
components. Only certi ied, trained technicians can service them.

Unit Description
Unit Overview
The Thermo King Precedent units are one piece, sel -contained, diesel
powered, air cooling/heating units operating under the control o the SMART
REEFER™4 (SR-4) programmable microprocessor controller. The unit
mounts on the ront o the trailer with the evaporator extending through an
opening in the ront wall.
The units eature all-new DDE (Diesel Direct Electric) architecture, the quiet
running Thermo King engine, and the Thermo King X430L/X430P
reciprocating compressor.
