Setting up your video MP3 player
Installing the battery
1Slide off the battery cover on the back of the video MP3 player.
2Press the battery into the battery compartment, then slide it into place. The battery should fit snugly.
3Slide the battery cover until it snapsinto place.
Note
A plastic sheet has been placed over the screen to protect it in shipping. Remove the sheet before
continuing.

Charging the battery
Charge the battery whenever youaren't using the player to make sure it'salwaysfully charged. The battery
chargesin about 3 hours. A fully charged battery providesup to 20 hoursof continuous music playback,
depending on the brightness and display time of the backlight, and the volume levels. Youdo not need to
fully charge the battery before beginning to use your player.
To charge the battery:
1Turn on your computer.
2Connect the supplied mini USB 2.0 cable to the mini USB jack on the player and astandard USB jack on
your computer. When the cable isconnected correctly, the player beginsrecharging itsbattery using the
USB connection, and the message “OK to disconnect” appearson the player.
Asthe battery charges, the blue battery icon showsan animation of being filled from right to left, to
illustrate that the battery ischarging.
After the player isfully charged, the battery icon turnsgreen, indicating afull charge.
Connecting headphones
Youcan use any headphoneswith astandard 3.5mm stereo audio plug.
To connect headphones:
•Plug headphonesor the provided earphonesinto the earphone/headphone jackson the player.
Installing the included software
The instructionsin thisguide require installation of both the Best Buy Digital Music Store MediaManager
Software and the ArcSoft MediaConverter.
Note
To use Bluetooth headphonesinstead of standard wired headphones, see Connecting to Bluetooth
headphones(NS-DVB2G and NS-DVB4G modelsonly) on page 24. Bluetooth isavailable on the
NS-DVB2G and NS-DVB4G modelsonly.
Note
To use the FM radio, youmust have the provided earphonesconnected, because they act as the FM
antenna. Youcan use any headphoneswith unshielded wires.
Note
Attention Apple Users(OS 8.6 and higher):
•Donotinstall the software.
• Connect your player to your computer.

To install the software:
1Insert the Insigniasoftware CD into your computer'sCD drive. The software installation program starts.
-OR-
If the installation program doesn't start automatically, double-click My Computer on your desktop,
double-click the CD drive that containsthe InsigniaCD, then double-click the file Setup.exe. The
software installation program starts.
2Follow the on-screen instructionsto finish the installation.
Using your video MP3 player
Turning your player on and off
To turn your player on and off:
1Press and hold (Power).
2To turn off your player, press and hold (Power) again.
Navigating the on-screen menus
Use the on-screen menuto play music and change settings.
To navigate the on-screen menu:
1Press (Menu). The main menuopens.
2Use the scroll wheel to highlight one of the following menuitems:
•Now Playing—displaysthe track currently playing.
•Music Library—access your stored tracks.
•Audible Books—access your stored Audible files.
•Video—access your stored video files.
•Photo—access your stored photo files.
•FM Radio—access the built-in FM radio.
•Recording—record afile using the Line-in jack.
•Settings—access your video MP3 player settings.
3Press (Next). The submenuof the item youselected opens. To navigate backwardsfrom asubmenu,
press (Previous).
Recording
Yo ucan record sound on your video MP3 player either from an attached device such as aCD or MP3 player,
or from the built-in FM radio.
Recording from a device
To record from an attached device:
1Connect your Video MP3 player to the device using astandard 3.5 mm stereo cable. One end of the
cable plugsinto the line out jack on your device and the other end plugsinto the line in jack on the Video
MP3 player.
2(Optional) If youwould like to change the recording quality or size then select Settingsfrom the Main
menu, Record, then select Encoder. Choose either WMA or PCM (PCM providesthe highest quality),
then select the quality level of the recording.
3Press (Menu). The main menuopens.
4Use the scroll wheel to select Recording, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
5Press and hold (Play/Pause) to start recording, then release the button.
6Press and hold (Play/Pause) to stop recording, then release the button.
Tip For iTunesDrag and Drop support, File & Folder (MSC) USB mode isautomatically enabled when you
connect the player. Your InsigniaMP3 player will only play iTunesMP3 filesthat youdrag and drop from
iTunes. For information on changing USB modes, see Manually changing the USB mode on page 27.
Tip Press and hold the (Menu) button to return to the menuyouwere last navigating.
Tip To record from amicrophone, use an amplified microphone for best results.

Recording a radio broadcast
To record an FM radio broadcast:
1Press (Menu). The main menuopens.
2Use the scroll wheel to select FM Radio, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
3Tune to the broadcast youwant to record.
4Press and hold (Play/Pause) to start recording, then release the button.
5Press and hold (Play/Pause) to stop recording, then release the button.
Listening to a recording
To listen to a recording:
1Press (Menu). The main menuopens.
2Use the scroll wheel to select Music Library, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
3Use the scroll wheel to select Recordings, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
4Use the scroll wheel to select the select the recording to listen to, then press (Next) or
(Play/Pause). The play pop-up opens.
5Use the scroll wheel to select Play, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause). The recording plays.
Changing the volume
To change the volume:
•Turn the wheel to the right or left to change the volume.
Locking the buttons
Youcan prevent accidental button operation by locking the buttons.
To lock the buttons:
1Slide the HOLD switch in the direction of the arrow. An image of the hold button in the HOLD position
appearson the screen.
2To unlock the buttons, slide the HOLD switch away from the arrow.

Getting more music
Yo ur video MP3 player already containssome music files, but youcan get more music from your own music
CDsand from the Internet.
Getting music from CDsand the Internet to your video MP3 player involvestwo steps:
1Rip aCD (create filesof the music on the CD) or download music filesfrom the Internet.
2Select the filesto copy and copy them to your player.
Getting more music on your computer
Getting music from CDs
To rip a CD:
1Click Start, All Programs, Best Buy Digital Music Store, Best Buy Digital Music Store. Best Buy
Digital Music Store opens.
2Put amusic CD in the CD drive, then close any dialog boxesthat may open. Best Buy Digital Music Store
liststhe trackson the right side of the screen. If youare connected to the Internet, the list showsthe track
names.
3Click the check boxesin front of the songsyouwant to copy.

4Click Import CD. Best Buy Digital Music Store createsMP3 filesfrom the music trackson the CD and
liststhem under the My Library folder.

Getting music from Digital Music Store
To buy and download music filesfrom the Internet:
1Click Start, All Programs, Best Buy Digital Music Store, Best Buy Digital Music Store. Best Buy
Digital Music Store opens.
2In the Search box, type the name of the artist or album youwant to download music for, then click Go.
Any matchesthat Digital Music Store findsare displayed on the screen.
3Decide which tracksor albumsyouwant to buy, then click BUY next to the music youwant.
4Follow the on-screen directionsto finish the purchase. The music filesare added to your Digital Music
Store music library.
Tip Yo ucan also use other digital music management programsto get music filesfrom CDsand the
Internet. See the program'sonline help for more information.
Tip For iTunesDrag and Drop support, File & Folder (MSC) USB mode isautomatically enabled when you
connect the player. Your InsigniaMP3 player will only play iTunesMP3 filesthat youdrag and drop from
iTunes. For information on changing USB modes, see Manually changing the USB mode on page 27.

Transferring music filesto your player
Copying filesusing Best Buy Digital Music Store
To copy filesfrom your computer to the video MP3 player using Best Buy Digital Music Store:
1Connect the USB cable to aUSB port on your computer and the mini USB port on your player. The
message “Searching for PC” appearson the player.
Your computer detectsthe player, and addsthe player as anew device (“InsigniaVideo Player”) in the My
Computer list of drivesin Windows.
2Click Start, All Programs, Best Buy Digital Music Store, Best Buy Digital Music Store. Best Buy
Digital Music Store opens.
3Close any popup windowsthat open.
4Click My Library in the list of content types. Your entire library of digital music appearsin the right side of
the screen.
5Click and drag the music filesfrom your library list to the InsigniaVideo Player item in the Sourceslist.

Asthe songsare copied to your player, the message “Syncing: Do not disconnect device” appearson the
player.
6When youhave finished transferring all of the filesyouwant to copy to your InsigniaVideo Player, you
can click Insignia Video Player in the list of sourcesto view the updated list of trackson your player.
When the transferring iscomplete, the message “OK to disconnect” appearson the player.
7Unplug the USB cable from your computer and your player.

Transferring filesusing WindowsExplorer
For WindowsXP and Windows2000 users, the player automatically connectsin Media Manager (MTP)
mode to copy WMA and MP3 filesto the Media folder, and any other file formatsto the Data folder (you
cannot see the Datafolder using the player'sdisplay).
Depending on which mediamanager software (such as BBDMS, WindowsMediaPlayer, and many others)
youuse, the name of the subfoldersmay be different than “Media” and “Data.”
For all other operating system users, the player automatically connectsin File &Folder (MSC) mode to copy
foldersand any format of filesto the player'sroot folder. The player will still only play MP3, Vorbis, and WMA
files.
To copy music filesfrom your computer to your player using WindowsExplorer:
1Connect your player to the computer using the provided USB cable. The message “Searching for PC”
appearson the player.
2On your computer, click Start, My Computer, then double-click the folder where your music filesare.
3Open My Computer again to open another window, then open the Insignia Video Player drive. (When
your computer detected the player, it added the player as anew device called “InsigniaVideo Player” in
the My Computer list of drivesin Windows.)
4Double-click the device and the internal storage icon until yousee alist of filesand folders.
5Click and drag the music filesfrom your computer to the player:
• If your player isin MediaManager (MTP) mode, copy them to the Media folder on the player.
• If your player isin File & Folder (MSC) mode, copy them to the root folder on the player.
When the transferring iscomplete, the message “OK to disconnect” appearson the player.
Tip To select multiple files, press and hold Ctrl on your keyboard while clicking the fileswith your mouse.
To select an entire range of files, click the file at the top of the range, press and hold Shift on your
keyboard, then click the file at the bottom of the range.

6Unplug the USB cable from your computer and your player.
Playing music files
To play music:
1Press (Menu). The main menuopens.
2Use the scroll wheel to highlight Music Library, then press (Next). The music library opens.
3Highlight one of the following tabsacross the top of the screen using the scroll wheel, then press
(Down) or (Play/Pause) to open that category:
•Artists—Listsall artiststransferred to the player.
•Albums—Listsall albumstransferred to the player. Even if youcopied only one track from an album to
your player, that album name will appear in thislist.
•Tracks—Listsall tracksarranged alphabetically by track title.
•Genres—Listsall music genrestransferred to the player.
•Playlists—Listsall playliststransferred to the player.
•Recordings—Listsall the recorded fileson the player.
•Audible—Listsall Audible tracks.
4Select the content to play by pressing (Play/Pause). A pop-up menushowsthe optionsyouhave for
playing the music. Play and Play All start playing the music immediately. Add to Now Playing queues
the music behind the tracksthat are currently playing. Select Play All to play all the tracks. The player
switchesto the Now Playing view, which displaysinformation on the track currently playing.
The album art appearson the left of the display. Press (Next) to view full screen album art. Press
(Next) again to see the list of songsselected for playback. Pressing (Next) togglesthrough the various
screens.
Tip Vorbisfileswill only be recognized in File and Folder (MSC) mode. See Manually changing the USB
mode on page 27.

•Topause playback, press (Play/Pause). The pause status icon ( ) appearsin the upper left corner
of the screen.
•Toskip to the next track, press (Skip/Fast Forward) (2). To skip to aprevious track, press (Skip
Back/Rewind) (3) repeatedly.
•Tofast forward the current track, press and hold (Skip/Fast Forward). To rewind the current track,
press and hold (Skip Back/Rewind).
•Torestart the current track, press (Skip Back/Rewind) once.
Tip If youare using asubscription music service, your player will play ashort tone between trackswhen
your content isabout to expire and amessage appearson the screen telling youhow many daysare left
before your content expires.

Repeating and shuffling playback
Yo ucan set the player to repeat or shuffle tracksusing the Repeat/Shuffle menu.
To shuffle the playback order:
1In the Settingsmenu, select Audio, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
2In the Audio menu, select Repeat/Shuffle Playback, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
3Use the scroll wheel to select from the following modes, then select (Next). The shuffle icon appears.
Yo ucan select from the following modes:
• Repeat single track
•Shuffle tracks/No repeat
• Repeat all tracks
• Repeat all trackswith shuffle
Repeating segmentsof a track
Yo ucan use A-B repeat to repeatedly play asegment of atrack. Youmust first enable A-B repeat.
To enable A-B repeat:
1Press (Menu). The main menuopens.
2Use the scroll wheel to highlight Settings, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
3Use the scroll wheel to highlight Audio, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
4Use the scroll wheel to highlight A-B repeat, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
5Use the scroll wheel to highlight On or Off, then press (Next) to select. The message “Use the down
button to activate A-B” appears, then the Audio Setting menuopensagain.
6. Press (Menu) to return to the Now Playing screen.
To repeat an audio segment:
1During playback, press (Down) to mark the start of the playback loop. The Repeat icon on the display
showsan “A.”
2Press (Down) again to mark the end of the playback loop. The Repeat icon on the display showsan
“AB” and the player repeatsthat audio segment indefinitely.
3Press (Down) again to cancel the repeating loop.
Using the equalizer
Six equalizer settingsare available, and five are preprogrammed: Normal, Rock, Jazz, Classic, and Pops.
The User setting letsyoucustomize the equalizer to your preference.
To select a pre-programmed equalizer setting:
1In the Settingsmenu, select Audio, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
2In the Audio menu, select Equalizer, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
3Use the scroll wheel to select the equalizer setting youwant.
4Press (Next) or (Play/Pause) to save your new settings.
To change the equalizer'scustom setting:
1In the Settingsmenu, select Audio, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
2In the Audio menu, select Equalizer, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
3Use the scroll wheel to select the Custom setting.
4Press (Play/Pause) to move the cursor to the first equalizer setting dial.
5Press (Up) or (Down) to adjust the setting. Repeat thisstep to adjust each remaining dial.
6Press (Play/Pause) to save your new settings.
Playing Audible files
Yo ucan listen to Audible audio bookson your player.
To play Audible files:
1Press (Menu).
2Use the scroll wheel to highlight Audible, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
3Use the scroll wheel to select the Audible file, then press (Next) or (Play/Pause).
4Press (Previous) or (Next) to play the previous or next Audible file.
