Chapter 1. Important Safety Information and Warnings
FCC Part 15 Compliance Statement
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a
Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are
designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a
residential installation. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio
frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions,
may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is
no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this
equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which
can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to
try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:
Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.•
Increase the separation between the equipment and the receiver.•
Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which•
the receiver is connected.

Intel®Reader to take images and listen to text for personal use is generally
accepted and covered under ‘fair use’ under multiple jurisdictions’ laws. This
means that you can use the device for your personal use without concern, much
like saving a CD you own to your own digital music player. Intel assumes no
liability for such uses, and encourages end users to ensure they possess the
appropriate legal rights to materials prior to downloading such materials onto the
Reader, or using any material created by the individual with the Reader.

Safety Precautions
This section covers the important safety information about the Reader. Please read,
follow, and keep these instructions and observe all warnings.
WARNING: Do not rely on the Reader as a sole means of reading
safety or hazard warnings, medication labels or instructions, food labels
or ingredient lists, or nancial or legal documents, when a reading
inconsistency or misreading of written text might put you at risk of
personal injury or economic harm. The Reader is designed to convert
text into speech, and is not intended for reading primarily mathematical,
scientic, or nancial data. For such critical reading, always use a
backup means of conrming that you understand the writing, such as an
alternative accessible format or another person.
Avoid Electric Shock
Do not spill liquid on the Reader or allow it to get wet. Do not operate the•
Reader near water.
Do not use the Reader in the kitchen or bathroom.•
Do not disassemble the Reader. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.•
Do not operate the Reader while driving.•
Do not wipe the screen with a wet cloth. Refer to the section titled•
Recommended Cleaning Techniques for more information.

Do not connect or disconnect cables to the Reader or operate the Reader•
during an electrical storm or when lightning is present.
Use only the• power cord and power supply provided with the Reader. Power
supplies can have similarly-sized and shaped connectors, so be sure to use the
right one.
Do not defeat the safety purpose of the grounding-type plug. A grounding-•
type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong/or contact. If the
provided plug does not t into your socket, consult an electrician for a proper
replacement.
Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, particularly at plugs,•
convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the Reader.
The AC power cord on the power adapter is the primary disconnect device for•
the system. Ensure that the cord is accessible.
Check the power cord periodically for fraying or other damage.•
The Reader is classied as Class I Equipment for protection against electric•
shock.
WARNING: Do not attempt to modify the supplied AC power cord
or use a power cord that is not the exact type and rating required.

Avoid overheating the Reader
Only use attachments and accessories recommended or specied by the•
manufacturer.
You can listen to the Reader while it is in its• carrying case. To prevent
overheating while you are listening, do not leave the case in a bag, backpack
or another container.
Avoid personal injury or injury to others
Do not set up, use, recharge or leave the Reader or battery near a heat source,•
such as re, a radiator, a stove, a heater, or another device that produces heat.
Keep all ammable materials a safe distance from the Reader and its power•
supply, and operate the Reader on a ame-retardant surface.
Route the cables and connections to reduce the possibility of creating a•
strangulation, entanglement, or tripping hazard.
Do not wrap the carrying case strap tightly around your neck, to prevent the•
possibility of strangulation.
To avoid injury that might result from dropping the unit, use the included•
lanyard or carrying case.
Avoid using• earphones at high volumes. Hearing experts advise against
continuous, loud, and extended play. If you experience a ringing in your ears,
reduce the volume or discontinue use.

Do not re the• ash unit directly into the eyes of someone at close range.
Doing so could damage the retinas of their eyes. Never re the ash unit
closer than approximately 1 yard (1 meter) from infants.
Important Battery and Storage Warnings
• Low battery: When the battery charge becomes low, the Reader presents a
warning message. Recharge the battery as soon as possible.
Critically low battery:• When the battery charge becomes extremely low,
the Reader presents a warning message and then shuts down. If the Reader
shuts down due to low battery charge during image processing, any images in
progress may be lost.
Low storage:• When storage space becomes limited, the Reader presents a
warning message. Delete older les to prevent the warning from recurring.
Critically low storage:• When storage space becomes extremely limited, the
Reader presents a warning message and does not accept additional les.
Lithium-ion Battery Handling Precautions
Before using the lithium-ion battery, be sure to read and follow the warnings in
this manual. Failure to heed these warnings can cause the battery pack to leak
chemicals, overheat, emit smoke, burst and/or ignite. Keep this manual for future
use. Contact Intel Corporation for additional information.
Do not disassemble or modify the battery pack.•
Do not connect the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals with a metal object.•

Do not transport or store the battery together with metal objects, such as•
jewelry or a watch.
Do not heat the battery pack or discard it into re.•
Do not immerse the battery pack in water, or allow it to get wet.•
Store the battery in a cool, dry environment, but do not allow it to freeze.•
To recharge the battery pack, use only the Reader and the power supply•
provided with the unit. Power supplies can have similarly-sized and shaped
connectors, so be sure to use the right one.
Do not pierce the battery pack with a nail or other sharp object, strike it with•
a hammer, or step on it. Do not strike or throw the battery pack. Do not use
an obviously damaged or deformed battery pack. Do not put the battery into a
microwave oven or pressurized container.
Keep the Reader and the battery out of reach of small children.•
If the recharging operation fails to complete when a specied recharging time•
has elapsed, immediately stop further recharging. For recharging procedures,
refer to the section titled Keeping the Battery Charged, in Chapter 2 of this
manual.
If the battery pack gives off an odor, generates heat, becomes discolored or•
deformed, or in any way appears abnormal during use, recharging, or storage,
immediately remove it from the equipment. Return the battery to your local
reseller, or recycle it following local recycling procedures.

If chemicals leaking from the battery pack contact your skin or clothing,•
immediately wash them away with cool water to avoid skin inammation. If
necessary, seek medical advice.
Replace the battery pack only with a battery pack from your reseller. There is•
a risk of explosion if the battery is replaced with an incorrect type.
Safety Symbols Used on the Reader Labels
WEEE symbol. Indicates compliance with Waste Electrical and
Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive 2002/96/EC.
WARNING! Indicates a risk that could occur if the Reader is used or
handled improperly.
Direct Current symbol. Indicates that direct current is present inside
the case.

Other Symbols Used on the Reader
Earphones. Indicates a socket (jack) for earphones.
Serial Number. The number that identies this unit.
USB Symbol. Identies a USB port on the Reader.
Recycling
Do not dispose of the Reader or accessories in a landll or other disposal site
where harm to the environment might occur. Instead, follow local procedures for
recycling electronic equipment and packaging materials.
Recommended Cleaning Techniques
• Clean the Reader with a soft, dry cloth, such as a cloth for cleaning
eyeglasses.
If the Reader becomes very dirty, clean it with a soft cloth slightly moistened•
with water or a mild detergent solution.
Do not use any kind of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent, such as•
alcohol or benzene. Abrasives can mar or more seriously damage the nish of
the Reader and carrying case.
Be careful not to let water or debris get into the vents or port openings of the•
Reader.
