information
1.1 Explanation of symbols
Warnings
Signal words at the beginning of a warning are used to indicate the type
and seriousness of the ensuing risk if measures for minimizing damage
are not taken.
•NOTICE indicates that minor damage to property may occur.
•CAUTION indicates possible minor to medium personal injury.
•WARNING indicates possible severe personal injury.
•DANGER indicates that severe personal injury may occur.

1.2 Important safety instructions
WARNING – When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions
to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons should be
followed, including:
1. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING THIS WATER HEATER.
2. This water heater must be grounded. Connect only to properly
grounded outlet. See "GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS" found on section
4.4.2.
3.Installorlocatethiswaterheateronlyin accordancewiththe provided
installation instructions.
4. Use this water heater only for its intended use as described in this
manual.
Warnings are indicated in the text by a warning triangle
and a gray background.
In case of danger due to electric shock, the exclamation
point on the warning triangle is replaced with a lightning
symbol.
Important information that presents no risk to people or
property is indicated with this symbol. It is separated by
horizontal lines above and below the text.

5. Do not use an extension cord set with this water heater. If no
receptacle is available adjacent to the water heater, contact a qualified
electrician to have one properly installed.
6. As with any appliance, close supervision is necessary when used by
children.
7. Do not operate this water heater if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it
is not working properly, or if it has been damaged or dropped.
8. This water heater should be serviced only by qualified service
personnel. Contact nearest authorized service facility for examination,
repair, or adjustment.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
Read all instructions before installing. Perform steps in the order given.
Havethisindirectwaterheaterserviced/inspectedbya qualifiedservice
technician, at least annually. Failure to comply with the above could
result in severe personal injury, death or substantial property damage.
Installation and conversion
BRisk of fire through soldering and welding!
Take appropriate protective measures when soldering and welding as
the thermal insulation is flammable; for example, cover the thermal
insulation.
BEnsure that the solar storage tank is installed or converted only by an
authorized contractor.
BUse installation materials that are sufficiently heat-resistant.
Installation and commissioning
BIn the Commonwealth of Massachusetts this tank must be installed by
a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
BThe power supply must be connected by a licensed electrician. The
wiring diagram must be followed.
BDo not install this device in rooms with high moisture exposure (e.g.
bathrooms, saunas).
Function
BObserve these installation and maintenance instructions to ensure
trouble-free operation.
BNever close the blow-off line of the safety relief valve. During heating,
water may be ejected for safety reasons.
Danger from electric shock
BEnsure that all electrical work is carried out only by a licensed
electrician.
BBefore removing the jacket, disconnect all poles from the solar
storage tank and secure against unintentional reconnection.
Risk of burns due to hot surfaces!
BEnsure that the piping of the solar thermal system is insulated
adequately.
Using the electric heating element
BEnsure that all electrical work is carried out only by a licensed
electrician.
BBefore starting electrical work, disconnect all poles from the power
supply and secure against unintentional reconnection.
BEnsure the system has been disconnected from the power supply.
Risk of scalding at the hot water taps
BWhen the solar storage tank is in operation, temperaturesin excess of
122 °F (50 °C) can occur. To limit the temperature at the tap, install a
thermal DHW tempering valve.
BWater heated to temperatures for clothes washing, dish washing, and
other sanitizing needs can scald and cause permanent injury.
BChildren, elderly, and handicapped persons are more likely to be
permanently injured by hot water. Never leave them unattended in a
bathtub or shower. Never allow small children to use a hot water tap
or draw their own bath.
BIf anyone using hot water in the building fits the above description, or
if state laws or local codes require certain water temperatures at hot
water taps, you must take special precautions:
–Use lowest possible temperature setting.
–To prevent scalding, install a tempering device, such as an
automatic mixing valve, at the hot water tap or the water heater.
Automatic mixing valves must be selected and installed according
to valve manufacturers recommendations and instructions.
BWater exiting from drain valves may be extremely hot. To avoid injury:
–Make sure all connections are tight.
–Direct water flow away from any person.
BMeasuresmust betakento protectagainstexcessivetemperatureand
pressure!Installationofatemperatureand pressure relief valve (TPR)
is required.
The following chart details the relationship between water temperature
and time for a scalding injury to occur. It can be used to determine the
safest water temperature for your application.
For operation with the electric heating element observe the following
points in order to maintain the corrosion protection and to adhere to the
guidelines for electrical safety:
BDo not operate electrically heated solar storage tanks with an inert
anode.
BUse metal connection fittings in potable water heating systems with
plastic lines.
BUse only the original electric heating element.
BWhen installation of the tank is complete, inspect the ground
conductor (including metal connection fittings).
Maintenance
Customers are advised to:
BSign a maintenance and inspection contract with an authorized
contractor. Have the solar storage tank inspected and, if required,
serviced annually.
BOnly use genuine spare parts.
Overheating
Should overheating occur or the solar supply fail to shut off,
BDo not turn off or disconnect electrical supply to circulator.
BDo not operate the appliance if any part has been under water.
The possible damage to a flooded appliance can be extensive and
present numerous safety hazards.
BAny appliance that has been under water must be replaced.

2 Product description
2.1 Pack contents
The solar storage tank is delivered fully assembled on a pallet.
The following parts of the standard delivery are packed separately in a
plastic bag:
•Feet for the solar storage tank
•Technical documentation
•2x M6 Screws and washers for installing the solar pump station
•Clamping spring for DHW temperature sensor
2.2 Product description
The solar storage tank is equipped with an electric heating element.
Alternatively, the solar storage tank can be operated with a downstream
external tankless water heater.
When operated with an external tankless water heater, the electric
heating element must not be connected.
The main components of the solar storage tank are:
•Storage tank with corrosion protection
The cathodic corrosion protection comprises the hygienic thermo
glaze and two magnesium anodes.
•Smooth tube heat exchanger
The smooth tube heat exchanger transfers the energy from the solar
circuit to the DHW inside the storage tank. The potable water is
heated uniformly.
•Thermal insulation
The thermal insulation, made from CFC-free hard polyurethane foam,
is directly applied to the storage tank and insulates against heat loss.
•Sensor well with DHW temperature sensor
The optional DHW temperature sensor supplies temperature
information to an optional controller.
•Electric heating element
In addition to the solar thermal system, the electric heating element is
a backup heat source for DHW heating.
•Drain valve
The drain valve is used to drain the storage tank completely.
•Temperature and pressure relief valve (TPR)
The temperature and pressure relief valve protects the storage tank
against overheating and overpressure.

2.3 Intended use
The solar storage tank is used to heat and store potable water to supply
single- and multi-family homes. Please observe national, regional, and
local codes, regulations, guidelines and standards for potable water.
Heat the solar storage tank only by means of a heat transfer medium
(mixing ratio: heat transfer medium/water max 50/50) and only in
closed systems.
Installthe solar storage tank only inside a building. The room must not be
exposed to freezing temperatures and the floor must be level.
Observe the specifications (ÆChapter 2.8) to ensure proper use.
Any other purpose is considered improper use. Any resulting damage is
excluded from the manufacturer's warranty.

2.5 Tools, Materials and Accessories
You need only the standard tools typically used in gas and water
installations to install and maintain the solar storage tank.
A dolly with straps may also be useful.
2.6 Symbols and Warnings
The following symbols and warnings are attached to the storage tank.
They refer to their immediate surroundings.

Labels and signs can becomedirty orcovered over time.
Dangers can then not be recognized or the necessary
procedures observed. This poses a risk of injury.

condition (ÆChapter 2.1, page 4).

4.1.2 Positioning the DHW tank

Example of typical piping layout for a solar storage tank
Fig. 11 shows typical domestic water piping for a solar storage tank.
The function of the components shown are as follows:
•Shut-off valves (recommended) – Used to isolate the tank for
servicing.
•Flow-check valve (required by some codes) – Used to prevent water
from flowing back out of the tank in the event that inletwater pressure
drops.
•Drain (required) – Used to drain the tank for inspection or servicing.
•Expansion tank (required when a flow-check valve is used) – This
expansion tank absorbs the increased volume caused by heating
water.
Domestic Water Piping for Distant Fixtures
In some cases, the furthest fixture may be quite distant from the tank.
Such an installation would result in an unacceptable delay before hot
water reaches these distant fixtures. Even if all the fixtures are relatively
close to the tank, the building owner may want hot water at all fixtures as
soon as they are opened.
A solution to this problem is to run a pipe from the furthest fixture on
each branch back to the recirculation return of the tank (ÆFig. 11 ).
A small recirculation pump is installed in this line and wired to run
continuously, intermittently, or on demand. A flow-check valve in this
line permits flow only towards the tank inlet.
When no fixtures are drawing water, the recirculation pump moves hot
water from the tank to the end of the branch just below the last fixture,
then back to the inlet of the tank via the return pipe. When a fixture is
opened, hot water is already out in the branch very close to the fixture
and hot water appears at it almost immediately. The flow-check valve
prevents cold water in the tank’s inlet pipe from passing around the tank
and heading directly to the fixture. Because hot water is always
circulating in the hot water branch the entire branch should be insulated
to prevent excessive heat loss.
Anti-scald Valves (Tempering Valves)
Anti-scald valves used with water heaters are also called tempering
valves or mixing valves. An anti-scald valve mixes cold water with the
outgoing hot water to assure that hot water reaching a building fixtureis
at a temperature low enough to be safe (ÆFig. 11 , [3]).
Usually, the maximum temperature of the outlet water will stay near the
setting of the tank controller. In some cases, however, hot water usage
patterns can cause the outlet water temperature to rise significantly
above the control setting.
The temperature of water going to the fixtures can be more carefully
controlled through the use of a thermostatic mixing valve. This device
blends a controlled amount of cold water with the hot water leaving the
tank so thatwater exits the mixing valveat a more constant temperature,
resulting also in increased comfort.
4.3.2 Pipe connections to the heat source and DHW network
When operated with an external water heater, the electric heating
element must not be connected.
BUseonlythreaded fittings,with shut-offvalves asrequired, toconnect
lines to the tank. Connect tank to piping on site.

BUse installation material that is heat-resistant to

Use an expansion tank designed for use on domestic
water systems. Refer to the expansion tank
manufacturer’s literature for the proper size expansion
tank to use.

As solar thermal systems can produce high
temperatures, it is strongly recommended and
considered best practice to fit a DHW tempering valve!

4.3.3 Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve (TPR) Blow-off Line
The temperature and pressure relief valve (TPR) blow-off line must
be:
•Made of material capable of withstanding a temperature of 250 °F
(121 °C) or higher
•Directed so that hot water flows away from all persons
•Directed to a suitable place for drainage.
•Installed so as to allow complete draining of the temperature and
pressure relief valve (TPR) and blow-off line.
•Terminated no more than 6" (150 mm) above the floor or as required
by code (ÆFig. 14 , [X]).
WARNING: Risk of scalding from hot water!
The water temperature can be as high as 194 °F (90 °C)
in solar mode.
BTo limit the temperature at the tap to a maximum of
122 °F (50 °C), install a thermostatic hot water mixer
(accessory) in the hot water line (ÆFig. 12 , [2])
and Fig. 13 , [3]).

WARNING: Improper placement and piping of the TPR
valve can cause severe personal injury, death or
substantial property damage.
BDonotinstallanyvalvebetweentheTPRvalve and the
tank connection or on the TPR valve blow-off line.
The TPR valve is not intended for constant duty, such as
relief of pressure due to repeated normal system
expansion. Correct this condition in a domestic hot
water system by installing a properly sized expansion
tank. Refer to the expansion tank manufacturer’s
installation instructions for proper sizing.

The temperature and pressure relief valve (TPR) blow-off line must
not be:
•Excessively long. Using more than 2 elbows or 15 feet (4,5 m) of
piping can reduce discharge capacity.
•Connected directly to a drain. Refer to local codes.
•Subject to freezing.

4.3.4 Checking for leaks

4.4 Electrical Connections
4.4.1 Making electrical connections
BMake the electrical connections as specified in the technical
documentation.
BConnect the following components electrically:
–Electric heating element (factory-installed)
–DHW temperature sensor
4.4.2 Grounding Instructions / Connecting the electric heating
element electrically
The electric heating element acts as a backup to the solar thermal
system in case of cloudy weather or added consumption.
When operated with an external water heater, the electric heating
element must not be connected.
BRemove the four cover screws from the cover on the right and take off
the cover.
BConnect the electric heating element electrically using the terminal
shown in the diagram [1-3].
BRoute the electrical lead through the strain relief in the cover.
BReplace cover and secure it with the 4 screws.
BWhen operating with an electric heating element, observe local
regulations (e. g. run times) and safety requirements
(ÆChapter 1.2, page 2).

4.4.4 Installing the DHW temperature sensor
The DHW temperature sensor is included with the solar controller.
The temperature sensor is protected against polarity reversal.
BInstall the DHW temperature sensor [2] at location M to measure and
monitor the temperature of the water in the solar storage tank
(ÆFig. 3 , page 7).
BUsing the tension spring [1], insert the DHW temperature sensor into
the sensor well [3].

5 Commissioning
BEnsure that the installer of the solar thermal system or a qualified
contractor commissions the solar storage tank.
BCommission all components and accessories as specified in the
manufacturer's instructions in the technical documentation.
5.1 Commissioning the solar storage tank
BLoosen the 6 hex bolts and remove the inspection cover.
BRemove the soft foam insulation.
BCheck the tightening torque 18.5 - 22 lbf-ft (25 - 30 Nm) of the 8
bolts and, if necessary, retighten diagonally.
BTo bleed the solar storage tank, open the air bleeder valve or the
highest tap/valve.
BTo fill the solar storage tank,open the shut-off valve for the cold water
inlet.
BBefore heating up, check whether the heating system, solar storage
tank and pipework are filled with water. Open the air bleeder valve for
this purpose.
BCheck all connections, pipework and the inspection port for leaks.
BReplace the soft foam installation and reinstall the inspection cover.
5.2 System installer to inform the owner/operator
Explain to the owner/operator how the solar thermal system and the
solar storage tank work, and how to handle both.
BInform the owner/operator that
–The safety valve blow-off line must always be kept open.
–Proper operation of the safety valve must be checked regularly.
Ensure that all electrical work is carried out only by a
licensed electrician.

6Shutdown
6.1 Shutting down the solar storage tank
BShut down the solar thermal system (Ædocumentation for the
controller, the heat source and the solar thermal system).
BDisconnect the electric heating element completely from the power
supply and secure against unintentional reconnection.
6.2 Shutting down the solar storage tank when there is a
risk of frost
BShut down the solar thermal system (Ædocumentation for the
controller, the heat source and the solar thermal system).
BDisconnect the electric heating element completely from the power
supply and secure against unintentional reconnection.
BClose the shut-off valve for the cold water inlet.
BAttach a hose to drain the contents of the storage tank safely.

7 Environmental Protection / Disposal
Environmental protection is one of the fundamental company policies of
the Bosch Group.
We regard quality of performance, economy and environmental
protection as equal objectives. All legislation pertaining to the
environment is strictly observed. To protect the environment, we use
the best possible technology and materials while taking economic
aspects into account.
Packaging
For the packaging, we participate in the country-specific recycling
systems, which guarantee optimal recycling. All packaging materials
used are environmentally-friendly and recyclable.
Old appliances
Old appliances contain materials that should be recycled.
The relevant assemblies are easy to separate, and all plastics are
identified. This allows the various components to be sorted for
appropriate recycling or disposal.
8 Maintenance
Generally, we recommend that the solar storage tank be checked and
cleaned by a qualified contractor at least every two years. Please inform
the owner/operator accordingly.
BShorter cleaning intervals should be chosen under unfavorable
operating conditions, such as hard or very hard water and/or high
operating temperatures or an increased water flow rate.
8.1 Checking the magnesium anodes
The magnesium anode is a sacrificial anode, which is consumed as the
solar storage tank is used.
BCheck the diameter of the magnesium anode annually.
Never use the heating system's emergency switch to
switch off the heating system during the summer or
when you are away for an extended period of time, as
this will disable the solar thermal system.

BAllow the solar storage tank to cool down sufficiently
after shutting it down.

8.2 Restarting the solar storage tank after maintenance
Only use genuine spare parts.
BInsert new gasket (ÆFig. 19 , [5]).
BInstall flange in the solar storage tank using 8 hex bolts (hand tight).
BThen use a torque wrench totighten the hex bolts (diagonally) to 18.5
- 22 lbf-ft (25 - 30 Nm).
BCheck the tightness of the magnesium anode connection.
BReplace the soft foam installation and reinstall the clean out cover.
The solar storage tank warranty is void if the magnesium
anodes are not maintained properly.
Never bring the magnesium anode surface into contact
with oil or grease.

10.1 Additional terms and conditions of the limited
warranty for domestic hot water tanks (for all
applications)
MODELS COVERED
This limited warranty is provided by Bosch Thermotechnology Corp.
(BTC) and covers indirect enameled steel storage tank Model WST 50,
Model WST 80 and Model WST 119 installed in a one or two family
residential dwelling (hereinafter referred to as“Tank”). This warranty is
provided to the original purchaser of the Tank as long as the Tank
remains installed at its original place of installation.
WARRANTY COVERAGE
First Six Years –Limited Warranty
BTCwarrants thattheheatexchangerandtank assembly will remainfree
of leaks for six years from the date of original installation provided that
theTankis properly maintained by aqualifiedheating contractorandthe
other conditions of this warranty are met.
If during this time BTC determines that the leak is the result of a defect in
workmanship or materials, BTC, at its option, will repair or replace the
heat exchanger and/or tank. Labor charges are not included.
OTHER HOT WATER SYSTEM COMPONENTS
The Tank may be delivered with other system components not
manufactured by BTC (“Other Components). Other Components are
warranted by the manufacturer.
BTC also will warrant the Other Components to be free from defects in
workmanship and material for one year from the date of installation,
provided they are installed and properly maintained by a qualified
heating contractor and the other conditions of this warranty are met.
If a defect exists in the Other Components, BTC will repair or replace
them and pay for the associated labor charges at BTC approved rates, if
BTC determines that a defect in workmanship or materials exists.
10.2 Limited warranty for domestic hot water tank
installed in a commercial application
MODELS COVERED
This limited warranty is provided by Bosch Thermotechnology Corp.
(BTC) and covers indirect enameled steel storage tank Model WST 50,
Model WST 80 and Model WST 119 installed in other than a one or two
family residential dwelling (hereinafter referred to as “Tank”). This
warranty is provided to the original purchaser of the Tank as long as the
Tank remains installed at its original place of installation, subject to the
conditions in chapter 10.3.
WARRANTY COVERAGE
First and Second Years –Limited Warranty
BTC warrants that the Tank will remain free of defects in material and
workmanship for two years from the date of original installation
provided that the Tank is properly maintained by a qualified heating
contractor and the other conditions of this warranty are met. If during
this time BTC determines that the leak is the result of a defect in
workmanship or materials, BTC, at its option, will repair or replace the
heat exchanger and/or tank. Labor charges are not included.
OTHER HOT WATER SYSTEM COMPONENTS
The Tank may be delivered with other system components not
manufactured by BTC (“Other Components). Other Components are
warranted by the manufacturer.
BTC also will warrant the Other Components to be free from defects in
workmanship and material for one year from the date of installation,
provided they are installed and properly maintained by a qualified
heating contractor and the other conditions of this warranty are met.
If a defect exists in the Other Components, BTC will repair or replace
them and pay for the associated labor charges at BTC approved rates, if
BTC determines that a defect in workmanship or materials exists.
10.3 Additional terms and conditions of the limited
warranty for domestic hot water tanks (for all
applications)
The limited warranty for Commercial and Residential Domestic Hot
Water Tanks does not cover the following circumstances:
1.Components or parts not provided by BTC.
2.Serviceable items and normal maintenance as required per the
Installation Manual.
3.The workmanship of any installer. BTC disclaims and does not
assume any liability of any nature for unsatisfactory performance
caused by improper installation, repair or maintenance.
4.Any labor or material costs for removal, reinstallation, repair and
replacement of the defective component or part unless otherwise
provided above.
5.Transportation to BTC, if necessary.
6.Damage caused by excessive temperatures or pressures, fuel or gas
explosion, electrochemical reaction, water and air impurities,
electrical failures, flooding or acts of God.
7.Any Tank that has a failure of malfunction resulting from failure to
keep the Tank full of potable water, failure to assure that the water in
the Tank is free to circulate at all times, failure to keep the Tank free of
water sediment or scale deposits or failure to inspect the anode rods
at intervals of not more than two years.
8.Shipping charges, delivery expenses or administrative fees incurred
by the purchaser in repairing or replacing the Tank.
CONDITIONS OF WARRANTY
ThewarrantyforCommercial and Residential DomesticHotWater Tanks
is void under the following circumstances:
1. Any Tank that is installed where polybutylene pipe without an oxygen
barrier is used.
2. Any Tankthat is connected to any closed loop application system that
allows oxygen penetration of the system.
3.Failureormalfunction resulting from improper or negligentoperation,
accident, abuse, freezing, misuse, unauthorized alteration or
improperinstallation,repairormaintenance. Seethe Owner’sManual
for installation and maintenance information.
4.Any Tank that did not have installed a new temperature/pressure
relief valve at the time of installation.
5.Any Tank used with insufficient water or is operated with water that
cause deposits or corrosion.
6.Failure to inspect the anode rods at intervals of not more than two
years. See the Owner’s Manual for installation and maintenance
information.
7.Any Tank in which the water condition does not achieve and maintain
the required water specification including a minimum hardness of at
least 2 grains. See the Owner’s Manual for installation and
maintenance information
8.Work performed without prior authorization or approval and without
authorization/requisition number and without proper documentation
verifying compliance with above terms.

OTHER THAN THE OBLIGATIONS OF BTC EXPRESSLY SET FORTH
HERIN, BTC DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED,
INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
BTC’S SOLE OBLIGATION WITH RESPECT TO THE TANK AND
PURCHASER’S EXCLUSIVE REMEDIES ARE SET FORTH IN THE
FOREGOING LIMITED WARRANTY. BTC SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR
ANYINDIRECT,PUNITIVE,INCIDENTAL,SPECIAL,CONSEQUENTIAL
OR SIMILAR DAMAGES INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMIITATION, INJURY
OR DAMAGE TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY OR DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
USE, LOST PROFITS, INCONVENIENCE OR LOSS OF TIME.
NOTE THAT ANY REPAIRED OR REPLACED PRODUCT WILL BE
WARRANTED FOR ONLY THE UNEXPIRED TERM OF THE ORIGINAL
WARRANTY.
Some states do not allow the exclusion of limitation of damages, or
limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above
limitations and exclusions may not apply to you.
WARRANTY CLAIMS PROCESS
Ifyou haveawarrantyclaimyoushouldnotifytheheating contractorwho
installed your Tank and ask that the contractor notify the distributor
from whom the contractor purchased the Tank.
If this action is not possible or you don’t receive a response, contact
Bosch Thermotechnology Corp., 50 Wentworth Avenue, Londonderry,
NH 03053.
To process your claim, you will need a copy of your original invoice or
other proof of purchase and documentation showing the original
installation date and location.
The alleged defective components or parts must be returned to BTC in
accordance with BTC procedure then in force for handling goods
returned for the purpose of inspection to determine cause of failure
(contact BTC if you have questions regarding the return process).
If BTC determines that the returned components and/or parts are
defective and that this warranty applies, BTC will furnish the repaired or
replacement components and/or parts to an authorized BTC distributor
who, in turn, will forward the components and/or parts to the heating
contractor who installed your Hot Water Tank.
