Introduction
The closed built-in gas fire which you have just purchased from
KAL-FIRE’s FERA range is a product that will bring you years of
pleasure. We advise you to check the appliance on delivery for
any damage caused in transit. Before installing and using the
appliance, please read the accompanying instructions carefully.
These installation and operating instructions apply to all
appliances in the FERA range. These appliances must be
installed by an approved installer in accordance with national or
local regulations.

1Installation instructions
Please take note of the following instructions before connecting the
gas fire.
•This gas fire is not a ‘Do-it-yourself’ product and must be
installed by a Corgi registered person. The law demands that
all gas appliances are installed by a Corgi Registered installer
in accordance with the current gas safety (installation and use
regulations)
•In the case of a fault, the safety devices fitted in the fire and
gas regulator must never be disconnected, overridden, or
modified. Before passing the installation, your installer must
check the appliance to ensure that it is functioning correctly.
Factory-set safety devices must not be modified.
•Never use this product as an open fire and it is not permitted
to put inflammable materials on the burner.
The appliance that you have purchased is a closed system (see Figure
1). This means that the appliance works independently with respect to
the room in which it is installed. The Fera takes in the combustion air
directly from
outside through
the external pipe
of the combined
inlet and outlet
(concentric duct).
There is therefore
no need to make
any extra
provisions for a
supply of fresh air,
and the flue gases
are conveyed
directly to the
outside via the internal pipe.

1.1 Flue requirements.
With the Fera you have a choice of two types of wall duct (C11) or two
types of roof duct (C31). It is important to choose the right wall/roof
duct for the right situation. Both are available in black or unpainted.
Wall duct with cage (KF2CMD100korf Z)
This wall duct is suitable for areas where the
outside wall is not exposed to much wind.
Otherwise, there is a possibility of turbulence in
the appliance. This may cause the pilot light to
go out, or give rise to very unsteady flames.
Wall duct with hood. (KF2CMD100kap)
This wall duct is suitable for areas where the
outside wall is exposed to a lot of wind. The
hood ensures that the flue gases cannot blow
back into the combustion air inlet.
Roof duct (KF2CDD100KLTV Z)
When positioning a roof duct, you must take
care that no turbulence can arise in the area
where it is positioned. This means that sufficient
space must always be left between a wall/roof
and the roof duct. We recommend a minimum
radius of 500mm.
Roof duct (Ventilation plate with pull-on
hood) (KF2CAFDkap100LTV)
This roof duct can be used wherever there is an
existing flue and you wish to convert it to a
closed system. In this case it is possible to use
a flexible flue.

Fires in the FERA range can only be connected with KAL-FIRE
concentric RVS flue gas material, otherwise no warranty can be given
for the system. This is because during CE testing the appliances are
certified with this duct, and different resistance values apply to each
duct.
The maximum length of the wall duct is 60 cm, and can be shortened
as required, depending on the wall thickness. Firstly fit a 1 m piece
onto the fire’s connection collar, fit the 90° bend to this piece, and, if
necessary, shorten the wall duct to the desired length and connect it
to the bend.
For a roof duct system, the system length can be calculated using the
calculation principles. Take care to use as few horizontal pieces as
possible, and make sure that the flue is constructed so that the flue
gases always escape to the outside and never downwards!

1.2.3 Roofduct for existing flue.
You can convert your existing flue to a balanced flue system by using
two connectors. On top of the chimney you can use the Ventilation
plate with pull-on hood (KF2CAFDkap100LTV).
A flexible flue can be installed in the chimney.
The flexible flue is for the outlet fumes and
the rest of the chimney is for the inlet of the
combustion air. Always check the existing
chimney on leakage otherwise the balanced
flue system won’t work. If the existing
chimney is in a bad condition we prefer to
use two flexible flues. The outer flue is for the
inlet air and the inner flue is for the outlet
fumes.
At the bottom of the chimney you have to
use an other connector (KF2CSAFPL1050) to
create a good fit with the Kal-Fire concentric
flue.
1.3 System calculation
The following rules of thumb can be used for calculating the flue.
These calculation principles apply to both wall and roof ducts. Any
failure to adhere to these calculation principles will invalidate the
Fera’s warranty. If a large number of bends are used, and too much of
the flue is mounted horizontally, then considerable resistance is
created in the flue. This makes it difficult for the combustion air to
reach the appliance, which has a considerable effect on the flames. In
order to create a good draught in the duct, it is always necessary to
begin by:
•fitting a 0,7-1 m pipe vertically to the appliance.

The MAXIMUM vertical system length must be less than 12 m (< 12
m!). If it is desirable to mount part of the flue horizontally, the 12-
metre vertical system length can be converted to the horizontal.
Horizontal elements create considerable resistance, which is 1.5 times
greater than in the case of a vertical element.
•1 metre horizontally = 1.5 vertically.
•A maximum of ½ of the system may run horizontally.
The same method of calculation applies to bends:
•45° bend = 1.5 m
•90° bend = 2 m
•Wall/roof duct = 1.5 m
Calculation example:
For a Fera connected to a concentric flue, the calculation example is
as follows:
The first metre (0,7) must be vertical (always), then a 90° bend to
the rear, then 50 cm horizontally, then another 90° bend upwards.
The flue then extends for 1 metre upwards to a roof duct.
•1 metre vertical = 1 metre
•90° bend = 2 metres
•0.5 metres horizontal = 0.5*1.5 = 0.75 metres
•90° bend = 2 metres
•1 metre vertical = 1 metre
•Roof duct = 1.5 metres +
Total length = 8.25 metres
As this is less than 12 metres, the appliance will function. It must be
expressly pointed out that the length must be kept to a minimum in
order to produce the best flames.

1.4 Restrictor plate
In some installation chimney draught may be stronger than strictly
necessary. In these circumstances it is desirable to restrict draught in
order to achieve a calmer and higher flame movement. This can be
adjusted by using a restrictor plate.
Use the following chart to find out which position of the restrictor plate
we recommend to achieve the best possible flame movement.

2Building-in instructions
With the Fera there are two ways of dissipating the convection heat.
With the standard Fera (Figure 2) convection heat must be dissipated
by means of grates using a convection set (see Figure 9). The Fera
Uni (see Figure 3) has a convection box with a “cold” air inlet and a
warm air outlet. With natural ventilation the “cold” air is sucked out of
the room, underneath the fire. The air is heated up and leaves the
Fera at the top. The Fera Design mantle has its own convection
system.
This is because it is very important that the air cools the fire down.
Otherwise it reaches excessively high temperatures which can cause
the plasterwork or the marble mantel piece to crack. If a Fera Uni is
installed in combination with a marble mantel piece, then the
convection grates are often still connected in order to guarantee as
much cooling as possible. This is also vitally important if you have an
appliance with radio remote control. The better the cooling, the longer
the life of the fire. All appliances are tested and inspected with the
Uni which does not have convection grates and the standard one
which does have convection grates.

2.1 Choice of material
The materials used to convert the fire must be heat-resistant and
fireproof. Under no circumstances must there must be any flammable
material within the area of the fire. If mounting is carried out using
materials known in the industry (which have an insulating effect) such
as for example Promatect, Nobranda and gas concrete blocks, the
convection set MUST be connected to the appliance, in order to
effectively convey the heat from the appliance into the room.
2.2 The Fera 60, 75 and 105
The Fera’s contents consist of:
•Fera 60/75/105
•Installation and operating instructions
•White stones/ chips or moulded fire bricks/ Logs (The logs are
only delivered in combination with the chips).
•Adjustable feet.
To gain access to these contents, firstly remove the frame which is
held fast by magnets. The swinging door can be opened by removing
the two bolts (the large ones) situated on the right-hand side of the
fire. With the Fera 105, care must be taken that the appliance does
not tip forwards when the door is opened. When the swinging door is
shut again, care must be taken that the bolts are not overtightened,
otherwise the glass may break. Tight is tight enough. Always check
the appliance for possible damage and possible faults before installing
it completely.
2.2.1 The connections
•The Fera is supplied with a 15mm gas connection as standard.
This appliance must always be connected to a gas tap which
can be operated at all times.
•If you have a radio remote control, you will require a 230V
electric socket earthed for safety.
•The concentric flue has already been covered in detail in
Chapter 1 and should be manufactured by Kal-Fire.

2.2.2 Positioning of the chips/moulded fire bricks/ white
stones and logs
The chips cover the whole of the Fera’s cover plate. The flame can be
influenced by the quantity of chips used. A small quantity will allow
more air to pass through,
producing wilder flames. Using a
lot of chips will produce a steady
flame and a red glow. The
provided amount of chips is the
same for Fera 60, 75 and 105.
Do not use all the chips for the
Fera 60 and 75. The two pictures
below are the same stoves but
with a different amount of chips. The chips can create a turbulence if
they are situated in front of the safety flame. This can cause an error
and the appliance could extinguish.

Caution !
The chips must not cover the holes which are
situated at the front of the burner. The safety
flame must be in direct contact with these holes
otherwise the burner could not be lighted
correctly.

Tip 1: Cutting through the chips will produce a thinner chip which will
glow more.
Tip 2: Before putting the chips in place, it is best to position the
rearmost log first, and also the two logs on either side. The chips can
then be laid on the logs. There will then be plenty of air under these
logs which will produce a better glow.
Tip 3: You may partly cover the pilot light cap, but you must be able
to see that the pilot light is burning at all times. This will produce a
more realistic effect.
The fire bricks which are available with the Fera ensure good
conduction of the combustion air. These cover the burners and cover
plate (see Figure 4) to the thickness of one granule. If too many
bricks are placed on the burners, a very stable flame is produced. The
fewer the bricks, the more dynamic the flame. The fire bricks must be
filtered before placing them on the burner. Due to transport, dust is
created and this may block the burner.

2.2.3 Mounting of the convection set for the Fera
Irrespective of the size of the Fera fire, the convection sets (Figure 9)
consist of 1 or 2 flexible aluminium pipes, 4 or 8 clamping bands, 2
single or 2 double grates with connection collar for positioning at the
top in the surround, through
which the warm convection
air enters the room, and 2
single or 2 double grates
without connection collar,
which are placed at the
bottom in the surround, in
order to convey the
convection air back to the
fire. Always put all the
grates in position, both at
the top and at the bottom,
to set in motion the natural
circulation. This will bring
warmth into the living area
both pleasantly and
efficiently.
Failure to use the prescribed
convection set leads to overheating and damage to the appliance and
to increased discoloration in the room. Discoloration is always
possible, and the risk of this can be reduced by good ventilation where
the appliance is installed. If it is built into a decorative mantel piece
made from natural stone, failure to use the convection set may also
result in serious damage to the natural stone surround.
2.2.4 Mounting the convection set for the Fera 60 Uni,75
Uni and 75corner
With these fires, there is a convection mantle around the appliance,
which is designed to continuously heat the room pleasantly and
efficiently, via the air gap around the glass of the appliance. If the
appliance is built into a flat wall, the convection set does not need to
be used. Make sure that the material with which the wall is finished
(especially above the fire), is heat-resistant, otherwise there is a real
possibility of discoloration.
In the case of installation in a natural stone mantel piece, depending
on the type of natural stone, we still advise using the convection sets,
so that not all the heat affects the natural stone.

To do so, break off the convection covers on top of the appliance and
screw on the connection mouths supplied. Connect as described
below. Always put all the grates in position, both at the top and at the
bottom, to set in motion the natural circulation. This will bring warmth
into the living area both pleasantly and efficiently.
If the appliance is built into a decorative mantelpiece made from
natural stone, FAILURE TO USE the convection set may also result in
serious damage to the natural stone surround.
2.2.5 Mounting of the frame
All Frames are mounted with magnets
2.3 Fera Design mantle
The mantles are fully checked at our factory for
possible damages prior to their packing.
Nevertheless, please verify the appliance for
possible transport damage before installing it.
Contents of the Fera design mantle consist of:
•Design Line Mantle flat or curved
•Fera 60/75/105 with radiographic remote
control
•Little bag with cleaning accessories and
mounting gloves.
The Design Line is delivered packed in a cardboard box on a Euro
pallet. The Fera 60 is mounted in the Design Line mantle, whereas for
the Fera 75 and Fera 105 the appliance is delivered separately.
Carefully remove the cardboard box by lifting it up. Next you will see
the mantle wrapped in protective tubular foam, which has to be
removed very carefully without damaging the mantle with the knife.
For handling the front panel during assembly, we strongly recommend
you wear the white protective gloves, in order to leave as less as
possible fingerprints on the mat black front panel.
DO NOT REMOVE THE STEEL STRIP AROUND THE MANTLE YET, SO
THAT THE WHOLE WILL REMAIN STABLE!

2.3.1 Assembling the Design mantle
1. First, carefully open the front panel by pulling it forward at the
bottom. The gas compression springs see to it that lid
remains open.
2. Carefully take out the Fera fire appliance from the mantle and
put it aside in a safe place. For the Fera 75 and Fera 105 the
appliance is delivered separately.
3. Now, you can disassemble the front panel by removing the 2
slide catches from the hinges at the top and loosening the gas
compression springs.
4. Now cut the steel strip and take the built-in frame from the
pallet. Put it at the spot where the fire will be fitted. By
means of 4 screws, you can fasten the frame against the
fireproof wall. In the front foot frame, there are two holes in
order to fasten the whole onto the floor by means of key bolts.
5. Now put the Fera fire appliance back onto the supports in the
frame and fasten the appliance in the centre by means of the
two clamping screws in the frame. Provide for a 1mm-distance
between windowpane and mantle.
6. Connect the flue gas line using the Kal-Fire concentric
stainless steel flue pipes.
7. Connect the gas supply at the provided spot, and connect the
remote control to an EARTHENEND mains power supply.
8. For the finish around the Design Line mantle, the front edge of
the frame can be used as mounting support for the fire
retardant mounting plates with a maximum thickness of 20
mm. (plates can be screwed on to it).
9. Should it appear necessary to the plasterer, the enveloping 3-
sided profiles can be loosened by means of the screws at the
inside and remounted after everything has been finished.
10. For putting the front cap back into place, wear the supplied
white gloves in order to avoid possible prints on the front side.

11. When the front cap has been put back into place, clean the
front panel with the supplied cleaning product and non-fluffy
cloths.
12. Last but not least: enjoy the end result!
2.4 Fera Haste mantle and blue stone
The Fera Haste and blue stone mantle are fully
checked at our factory for possible damages prior to
their packing. Nevertheless, please verify the
appliance for possible transport damage before
installing it.
The mantles are delivered in a cardboard box, which
has to be opened very carefully without damaging
the mantle with the knife.
2.4.1 Assembling the Fera Haste and blue stone mantle.
1. Position the Fera 60 or 75 according to the installation
instructions as mentioned in your manual. Mind that the front
(glass plate) of the fire appliance is level to the front of the
mantle.
2. Make sure that the fire appliance is built in with heat resistant
sheets (e.g. promotec), according to drawing 10.1, so that
convection air can flow in the direction indicated by the
arrows.
3. At the back of the mantle there are 2 horizontally attached
plates. The upper plate can be used as supporting point. (also
see drawing 10.2)
4. Fasten the mounting plate against the wall at the height of the
upper attaching plate, as indicated in drawing 10.3.
5. Hook the mantle onto the upper attaching plate and lower the
mantle (onto the floor)

2.5 Fera 60 stove
The mantle and main frame are fully checked at our factory for
possible damages prior to their packing. Nevertheless, please verify
the appliance for possible transport damage before installing it.
Contents of the Fera 60 stove consist of:
•Main frame of the stove and mantle.
•Fera 60 with ultrasonic remote control.
The Fera 60 stove is delivered packed in a cardboard
box on a Euro pallet. Carefully remove the cardboard
box by lifting it up. Next you will see the mantle
wrapped in protective tubular foam, which has to be
removed very carefully without damaging the paintwork
with the knife.
2.5.1 Assembling Fera 60 stove
1. Remove the mantle from the stove by lifting it up.
2. Carefully take out the Fera appliance from the main frame and
put it aside in a safe place.
3. Take the main frame from the stove off the pallet and drill a
hole in the backside or bottom plate, through which the gas
line can be introduced and if necessary make 2 holes for
securing the stove against the wall.
4. Put the floor plate at the spot where the stove will be
installed. Put the main frame onto the floor plate and level
out with the adjusting feet.
5. Hang the suspension bracket for the upper basket on the wall
and secure it at the top with 2 screws. The bottom of the
suspension bracket can be clamped around the steel of the
stove.
6. On top and at the sides of the Fera there are all together 4
(not yet opened) convection holes. Open all 4 convection
holes.
7. Put the Fera 60 into the main frame (2 man) by:
1. obliquely introducing the stove (starting at the
top).
2. taking hold of the stove at the top (through the
main frame) at the flue gas connection. Pull up
the stove.
3. Make sure it fits between the two notches at the
backside bottom of the main frame.

8. Install the Fera 60 according tot the instructions of chapter 1
and 2.
9. Hook the mantle onto the main frame by suspending it over
the Allen screws. Make sure that the mantle does not graze
with too much a friction against the main frame.
10. Last but not least: enjoy the end result!
2.6 Moulded fire clay
If the Fera is built into a moulded fire clay mantle, there is no need to
use a convection set. This is a material which is highly suitable for
converting the appliance heat into healthy and comfortable radiant
heat. This material absorbs heat on the inside and gives off the stored
heat on the outside, into the room. The fibre-free insulation plates,
with a maximum permitted temperature of 1,100°C, are heat-
insulating and fireproof, and weigh 0.38 kg / dm³.
2.6.1 Mounting of the fire clay
The mounting of the fire clay is not included in this manual. Kal-fire
runs courses on this.

3Operating instructions
The Fera is available with three types of controls: there are appliances
with manual control, ultrasound remote control and radio remote
control.
3.1 Manually controlled appliances
3.1.1 Lighting the burners
Make sure the gas tap is turned on. The main burner in the fire is
ignited by a pilot light, which in turn is ignited by a piezo element.
Once the pilot light is lit, it heats up a thermocouple which creates a
small flow. This flow holds the gas valve open. Should the pilot light
go out, no gas can keep flowing. This means you can be sure of safety
at all times. The ignition takes place as follows: (see Drawing 11).
Turn the ignition knob (1 in the above figure) to the “pilot light”
position (small flame) and press in. Gas will now flow to the pilot light.
Keep the knob pressed in, and turn it to the left, “” position; you will
now hear the piezo ignition clicking and see a spark jump over to the
pilot light; keep this knob pressed in until the pilot light is burning
steadily. (This can take longer straight after mounting because the
gas pipe still has to fill with gas).
When the pilot light is burning, keep the knob (1) pressed in for
approximately another 20 seconds, otherwise repeat the above
operation.

Now release the knob (1). If the pilot light does not keep burning,
wait for 3 minutes and then repeat the above steps.
Now turn the knob (1) fully in the opposite direction, as far as the
position with the “big flame”; now you can adjust the flames to the
desired size, by means of the right-hand knob (2).
3.1.2 Extinguishing the burners
The burners can be extinguished as follows: turn the ignition knob (1)
a quarter turn to the left as far as the “pilot light” position. The
burners will now be extinguished, however the pilot light will stay
alight. The burners can be re-ignited by turning the knob back to the
position with the “flames”.
If you do not wish to use the appliance over an extended period of
time, you can turn the knob (1) all the way back to the symbol “z”,
which will also extinguish the pilot light, at the same time you can
also turn off the gas tap.

3.2 Appliances with ultrasound remote control

Now turn the knob (3) fully in the opposite direction, as far as the
position with the “big flame”. You can now adjust the height of the
flames with the
remote control
(Figure 13). For
higher flames, press
in the top knob (6)
and the left-hand
knob (8)
simultaneously. For
lower flames, press in
the bottom knob (7).
The remote control is
ultrasound, so you
have to point the
remote control in the
right direction. As
soon as the receiver
reacts, you will hear a
small motor running.
If this starts “ticking”, you have reached the highest or lowest
position. The flames can also be adjusted to the desired size manually
with the right-hand control knob (4).
3.2.2 Extinguishing the burners
The burners can be extinguished as follows: turn the ignition knob (3)
a quarter turn to the left as far as the “pilot light” position. The
burners will now be extinguished, however the pilot light will stay
alight. The burners can be re-ignited by turning the knob back to the
position with the “flames”.
If you do not wish to use the appliance over an extended period of

3.3 Appliances with radio remote control
Take the battery-protection strip out of the manual transmitter and
check that the battery is still correctly positioned between the two
contacts. Plug into the electric socket and turn on the gas tap.
3.3.1 Lighting the burners
When the Big flame (Figure 14 no. 1) and the “Off” knob (no. 3) are
pushed in simultaneously (two-knob ignition!!), after a few seconds
the ignition will automatically start sparking. When the pipe and the
gas control unit are filled with gas, a pilot light will appear and the
sparking will stop. If the sparking
does NOT stop, there can only be
two reasons for this: the gas supply
is still closed off (no pilot light can
be seen); in this case turn on the
gas tap - or the plug is not pushed
into the electric socket correctly
(there is a pilot light, but the
ignition keeps on sparking), then
the plug has to be turned round in
the electric socket (NL) or the L and
N wires need to be swapped over in
the black receiver box (BE). When
the pilot light is burning, the main
burners will start with a large flame and are then continuously
adjustable between maximum and minimum. You can adjust the
burners higher and lower with no. 1 and no. 2.
Resetting the appliance
If still no flame is detected after 30 seconds of
sparking, the automated burner unit safety-lock
will be activated. You can reset the automatic
burner unit by means of the remote control and/or
a reset knob on the automatic burner unit itself.
(This procedure may have to be repeated several
times when the appliance is first used or if it has
been out of use for an extended period).
I On the remote control you then press in the
“small flame” and “X” simultaneously (1) and
then immediately press “X” (2) again. (see
Figure 15).

II If the automatic burner unit (Figure 16) is accessible, this can be
reset by pressing in a reset knob (3). You can see that this is
locked by the red lamp (3).
After the reset cycle, lasting about 10 seconds,
you can re-start by simultaneously pressing the
ON and OFF knob.
3.3.2 Extinguishing the burners
To completely extinguish the fire, press the OFF
knob (Figure 14 no. 3) on the transmitter, and the main burners as
well as the pilot light will go out completely.
If the electricity supply is interrupted, the fire will also go out.
If you are going to be away for an extended period, it is advisable to
turn off the gas supply to the appliance.
