KARHIA PRO COAT STRIPPER!
General description
KarhiaPro is the world’s first trimmer for strip-
ping wire-coated dogs. The machine mimics
hand stripping, but is much faster. For this
reason, the machine removes much less hair
with each movement, which is more pleasant
for the dog. The machine considerably reduces
the load on the user’s fingers.
The KarhiaPro trimmer has a powerful 24V
engine. The machine’s stripping power can be
adjusted, however, to suit the dog, meaning it
does not remove tightly growing hair.
The machine has a belt and a stripping paw
which remove old, mature hair with stripping
movements.
The machine carries out 1,800 stripping move-
ments per minute. When the stripping paw is
worn out, it is replaced. The hair passes
through the hose to the KarhiaTube container
or vacuum cleaner, ensuring a clean room. The
KarhiaTube container can also be used to check
easily how the hair starts to detach. You can use
an ordinary household vacuum cleaner (permit-
ted suction: 600-2500 W) with the KarhiaPro
trimmer.
Environmental protection
The packaging materials are recyclable. Do not
treat the packaging as household waste. Recy-
cle them instead. Used appliances contain
valuable recyclable materials that should be
recycled. For this reason, dispose of used appli-
ances in the appropriate recycling facilities.
Tekniset tiedot
The KarhiaPro trimmer has been developed for
professional groomers. When the safety in-
structions are followed, the machine is suitable
for home use.

ing shop environment or at home. The permit-
ted operating temperature is between +5° and
+35° Celsius.
2.4.Safety instructions
•Do not allow the machine, hose, adapter,
KarhiaTube container or transformer to get
wet. If any of these parts comes into contact
with water or any other liquid, disconnect it
from the mains immediately. Send the ma-
chine (or the wet part) to the manufacturer
for inspection before attempting to use it
again.
•The machine may not be connected to any
power source other than the power source
supplied with the device. If the power supply
breaks down after the warranty period, you
can buy a new one in the Karhia online store.

•Use only KarhiaPro trimmer branded spare
parts.
•Do not use a broken stripping paw or belt.
Check the condition of the stripping paw and
belt !
at regular intervals, and keep an eye on their
wear and tear. Unplug the machine from the !
mains before you inspect it, or if you need to
touch the stripping paw or stripping arm.
•Do not clean the machine with petrol, alcohol
or other solvents.
•The machine must not be used for any pur-
pose other than for stripping the hair of wire-
coated !
dogs who are fit to be stripped. It may not be
used for human hair removal or cleaning
upholstery with long threads, for example.
2.5. Safety during use
•The machine must be turned offin the fol-
lowing cases:
-When you release your hold on the ma-
chine (for example, when taking a break
from !
trimming).
-When you adjust the comb distance.
•The machine must be unplugged from the
mains in the following cases:
-When you change the stripping paw or
check its condition.
-When removing hairs from inside the
machine or around the belt package.
•When you change the stripping paw, check
that it is secure by tugging it in the direction
of hair removal while holding on to the front
and rear surfaces of the stripping paw. The
stripping paw must be locked before starting
to strip.
•Do not leave the machine on the trimming
table at the same time as the dog.
•The KarhiaPro trimmer may not be used to
strip hair on dogs’ ears.
•Avoid stripping near the dog’s ears. When
stripping lop-eared dogs, the ear can end up !
inside the machine, especially when using a
vacuum with high suction. The machine may !
damage dogs’ ears.
•Do not insert any foreign objects into the
machine.
•Do not insert fingers into the machine while
it is running. Even though it has limited pow-
er, the machine can injure fingers.
•The KarhiaPro trimmer may not be used to
trim straggly, tangled hair.
•Do not use the machine without the stripping
paw.
•If the machine does not switch offat the on/
offswitch because of faulty parts, remove the
machine from the hose or unplug the trans-
former from the mains.
3. PREPARATIONS BEFORE USE
3.1. Getting the machine ready
Take the machine and other parts out of their
packaging. Connect the adapter to the Karhia
Tube container (fig. 1) and attach the trans-
former to the adapter (fig. 2).

Attach one end of the hose (female end) to the
machine (fig. 3) and the other end of the hose
(male end) to the adapter (fig. 4). Check that the
parts mach. Do not try to force them in.
If you want to attach another stripping paw to
the machine, see the instructions for choosing
and changing parts in the “Choosing a stripping
paw” and “Changing a stripping paw” sections.
Attach the KarhiaTube container to the hose of
a normal domestic or central vacuum cleaner
(fig. 5). Attach the adapter cord to a mains
socket.
3.2.Preparing the coat before stripping
NB! Do not wash the dog’s coat for a week or
two before stripping.
Comb the coat thoroughly and remove or comb
out tangles. If the dog has a lot of undercoat, it
must be removed using special tools. This
makes stripping considerably easier. If the dog
has soft hair on its legs or elsewhere, or if it has
been trimmed with clippers and the hair has
softened, do not strip these areas using the
machine. We recommend you familiarise your-
self with breed-specific trimming instructions
beforehand.
4. USE
4.1. General
Once you've done the preparations and re-
moved tangles you can start the trimming. The
machine is moved against the grain. When
moved against the grain, the stripping motion is
done with the grain, just like when hand-
stripped.
NB!
Adjust the stripping power only when the de-
vice is turned on (fig. 6)
Always set the stripping power to the minimum
before you finish using the machine (fig. 7). If
the stripping power remains set to high, the

machinery is strained and the service life of the
machine is reduced.
The machine may not be used without suction.
The machine will break if you use it when suc-
tion is not turned on.
The hair to be stripped must be wiry and ready
for stripping.
4.2. Turning on and off
First turn on the vacuum cleaner and then the
KarhiaPro machine by sliding the switch to “on”.
To turn the machine off, slide the switch to “off”.
Ensure that the power level of the machine is
set to a minimum. If it is possible to adjust the
power of the vacuum, set it to medium for
short-haired dogs. When grooming long-haired
dogs, the suction should be set to maximum
power. Place the comb that comes with the
machine firmly against the dog’s skin and hold
tight to the skin with your other hand. Start
stripping hair on the dog’s back. The Karhia-
Tube container can be used to check how the
hair starts to detach. Move the machine slowly.
Start to increase the area you started in.
4.3. Stripping power adjustment
Before starting trimming, adjust the stripping
power while the machine is on by turning the
power knob to direction marked with (+). In-
crease the power until the rubber stripping belt
starts to rotate with the stripping paw.
Start by trimming a small area on the dog’s back
while keeping the dog’s skin tight with your
other hand. Increase the stripping power grad-
ually. When the machine starts to remove the
hair, you can usually increase the power even
more and thus speed up the trimming. If the
dog starts to react with the too high stripping
power, decrease the strength.
Stripping paws wear out little by little, so de-
pending on the type of trimmed hair you may
need to increase the stripping power as the
work progresses.
4.4. Comb distance adjustment
The comb distance adjustment allows you to
optimise stripping for coats of different lengths.
The comb can be adjusted to three different
distances. Move the comb by releasing the latch
on the bottom of the handle (fig. 8).
When the hair is short, that is, down to a few
centimetres, the comb can be kept at the short-
est setting, as close as possible to the stripping
paw and belt.
If a new, shorter layer of top coat has grown,
adjust the comb further away from the strip-
ping paw and belt.
You will find the best distance by trying differ-
ent settings during trimming and looking at
how the hair detaches.

4.5. Choosing a stripping paw
Dogs’ coats are unique. Their hair can be dense
or thin and detach easily or with more difficulty.
Some dogs’ hair can come offthe back easily,
for example, while their neck hair might be
tighter. The following table gives instructions
for choosing a stripping paw.
NB!
The table is for guidance purposes only. By
experimenting you can find an option to suit all
coats. Here, too, practice makes perfect! Listen
to and look at the dog while you work. Some
dogs can have weak, easily removable hair, but
can react more easily. In that case, use the Rake
paw.
4.6. Grooming tips
•Always start grooming by combing the dog's
coat and removing the undercoat if neces-
sary.
•Adjust the comb to the right distance.
•Keep the dog's skin tight with your other
hand. The closer from the machine you keep
the skin tight, the better the machine does
the job.
•Always press the trimmer firmly against the
dog's back to prevent the dog’s skin from
moving.
•When you find a suitable stripping power and
the hair begins to detach, trim a small area to
the dog's back and start to enlarge it calmly.
•If the dog has a tight or dense coat, take just
half of comb's width of hair inside the ma-
chine. Progress calmly, moving the machine
quickly does not speed up the trimming. Give
the machine time to do the plucking.
•Check occasionally that the stripping paw is
unbroken or worn out. Trimming with broken
stripping paw may damage the stripping belt.
•Long or otherwise challenging hair can be
usually removed best by taking some hair
inside the device and then start to move the
device backwards. This way the dog’s skin
usually stays tight. You can also progress by
moving the machine back and forth. The
machine plucks hair also when moved back-
wards.
•When you finish trimming, remember to
adjust the stripping power to the minimum.
The lifetime of the machine can shorten if the
machine is stored with the high stripping
power for a long time.

Remove the comb and lift the stripping arm up
(fig. 10).
Support the stripping paw with your thumb and
put your index and middle fingers on the wings.
Press gently with your thumb to “open” the paw,
then remove the paw (fig. 11).
Choose a new paw and put it in place by press-
ing the paw “open” in the same way as during
removal (fig. 12). Make sure it is firmly attached
by tugging it.
5. STORAGE AND CLEANING
5.1. Storage
You can store the hose, machine, transformer
and stripping paws in the KarhiaTube container
(fig. 13).
5.2. Cleaning
You can wipe the housing of the machine with a
damp cloth. You can use a mild detergent. If
hair remains in the machine, lift the hood and
remove the visible hair.
If the dog’s coat is oily or dirty, the stripping
paw and belt get dirty more quickly, and the
hair will no longer detach at the desired speed.
You can clean the stripping paw and belt by
wiping away grease and other dirt from the
surfaces, for example, with a damp cloth, paper
or cotton wool and washing-up liquid. You can
also disinfect the machine in this way.

You can clean the comb with a toothbrush and
mild detergent, for example. Allow the stripping
paw and belt, and the comb, to dry before use.
5.3. Belt package removal and cleaning
Remove the comb. Unscrew the screws of the
belt package from both sides of the machine
(fig. 14). Pull the belt package out (fig. 15).
If hair has got under the belt or the belt does
not turn easily, carefully pull the belt out from
the carrier (fig. 16) and remove any hairs.
You can also remove the end rolls of the belt
package by pulling them. Detach them and
remove any hairs from around the carrier (fig.
17).
Remove the hairs and install the belt package
by gently pushing it back into the machine
using in the indicated “IN ->“ direction. If the
belt package does not go back in easily, make
sure that you are inserting it the right way (fig.
18).
6. MAINTENANCE
The mechanics of the machine have been lubri-
cated in the factory and do not need to be
maintained or lubricated. Please leave all other
maintenance procedures, other than the ones
mentioned in these instructions, to Karhia
Service. You can find instructions for sending
your machine for servicing at www.karhia.com.

!
!
Problem
Solution
The device does not turn on
Check that the transformer cord is undamaged and that it
is firmly plugged into the mains. Check, too, that all the
connecting points on the hose are attached as they
should be.
The machine is running, but does
not strip
Excess hair has probably got into the machine. Turn off
the machine, unplug from the mains and remove the hair
from the machine.
The belt does not rotate
Excess hair has probably accumulated around the belt.
Turn offthe machine and unplug from the mains.
Remove the hair from around the belt package. See the
“Belt package removal and cleaning” section of the
instructions.
Hair clogs up the machine
Check that the vacuum you are using works and that its
hose is attached firmly in the KarhiaTube container (or in
the KarhiaPro hose, if you are not using a KarhiaTube
container). There is enough suction if you can feel it at
the opening of the KarhiaPro machine. If possible, try
turning the suction up.
The machine overheats
Suction is offor too weak. Check that the vacuum is
working. Turn the suction up. Excess hair has gathered in
the machine and blocks the flow of air. Clean out hair
from the inside of the machine.
