• This lens is small and light,but it's still a telephoto lens with a
longfocallength.
Generally,telephotolensesareassociatedwithasmallangleof
viewandhigherprobabilityoftheimagesbecomingblurrydue
tomagnificationsofeverymovementofthelensknowas
“camerashake”.It'srecommendedthatyousetyourcamerato
highsensitivityandahighshutterspeed,oruseastabletripod
ormonopod.

7.Troubleshooting
Youcanpreventblurryimagesbyusingacablereleaseorself-
timerfunction.
Inthiscase,besuretouseastable,sturdytripod.Ifyour
camerahasamirror-upfunction,usethefunctiontofurther
reducethepossibilityofblurring.
Tip
• When a telephoto lens is used, the magnification factor
increasesandthereforedust,watervaporandothermatter
suspendedintheairwillaffecttheimagequality.Tocapture
sharpimages,ideallyphotographsshouldbetakenonafine
daywithminimumwindfollowingseveralconsecutivefinedays,
inalocationnotsubjecttoexhaustgases,smokefrom
chimneys,etc.
●Photographing Conditions with a Telephoto Lens
Itisdifficulttocapturesharpimagesinmountainsandcoastal
areasduringthesummer,becausetheaircontainsaconsider-
ableamountofgasandwatervapor.However,yourphotogra-
phycanbemoreenjoyableifyou'lltakeadvantageofunfavor-
ableconditionstocreateworksofyourown,suchascapturing
theseathroughvibratingairorshootingtheridgelinesofmoun-
tainsveiledinhaze.
Tip
• This lens isn't linked to the auto focus function,so the focus
mustbeadjustedmanually.Tobringthesubjectintofocus,
simplyturnthefocusring.
• With a telephoto lens, the depth offield (the range inwhich the
subjectcanbebroughtintofocus)becomesshallow(=the
focusrangeissmall),soit'sdifficulttoadjustthefocus.
Useastabletripodormonopodtoadjustthefocuscarefully.
●Adjusting the Focus
Generally,asuper-telephotolenswitharangeof300mmor
morewillhavesomeallowanceinthepositionoftheinfinitely
symbol∞.Thisisbecausetherefractiveindexoflightinair
changesasthetemperatureinthemirrorcylinderchanges,and
thefocuspositionmayshiftslightlyasaresult.Accordingly,be
suretoadjustthefocuscarefullybycheckingtheimageonthe
finderscreen,evenwhencapturingadistantview,starryskyor
otherverydistantsubject.
Tip
Ifyou'reusingadigitalcamerawithaliveviewfeature,youcan
usethezoom-infunctiontofine-tunethefocus.
Tip
• This lens employs reflective optics, so the aperture is fixed.
Accordingly,theamountoflightmustbeadjustedbychanging
theshutterspeed.(Ifyou'reusingadigitalcamera,youcando
thisbychangingtheISOsensitivity.)However,aslowshutter
speedtendstocauseblurryimages,soit'srecommendedthat
yousetyourcameratohighsensitivityanduseahigh-sensitivity
film(ISO400orbetter).
• Auto exposure is possible on nearly any camera that offers an
AEfunctionwithaperturepriority(exceptforcertainNikonand
Sonymodels)(theprogramAEandshutterpriorityAEarenot
possible).Setthecamerawithoutlenstotheaperturepriority
AEmode,andthentrytakingphotographsinabrightareaand
adarkarea.Ifyounoticethattheshutterspeeddiffersfromone
conditiontothenext,autoexposureisenabled.
●Adjusting the Exposure
Thislenshasnoelectricalcontacts,sosignalsaren'texchanged
electricallybetweenthecameraandlens.Accordingly,the
camera’sfinderdisplayorLCDscreenmaynotcomeon,but
thisdoesn'taffectthecameraorlensfunction.(It'sthesameas
takingphotographswithanastronomicaltelescopeorfield
scopeattachedtothecamera.)
