IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons
when using your washer, follow basic precautions, including the following:
• Read all instructions before using
the washer.
• Do not wash articles that have been
previously cleaned in, washed in,
soaked in, or spotted with gasoline,
dry-cleaning solvents, other
flammable or explosive substances
as they give off vapors that could
ignite or explode.
• Do not add gasoline, dry-cleaning
solvents, or other flammable or
explosive substances to the wash
water. These substances give off
vapors that could ignite or explode.
• Under certain conditions, hydrogen
gas may be produced in a hot water
system that has not been used for 2
weeks or more. HYDROGEN GAS IS
EXPLOSIVE. Ifthe hot water system
has not been used for such a period,
before using a washing machine, turn
on all hot water faucets and let the
water flow from each for several min-
utes. This will release any accumulat-
ed hydrogen gas. As the gas is flam-
mable, do not smoke or use an open
flame during this time.
• Do not allow children to play on or in
the washer. Close supervision of
children is necessary when the washer
is used near children.
• Before the washer is removed from
service or discarded, remove the door
or the lid.
• Do not reach into the washer if the
drum, tub or agitator is moving.
• Do not install or store this washer where
it will be exposed to the weathen
• Do not tamper with controls.
• Do not repair or replace any part of the
washer or attempt any servicing unless
specifically recommended in the
Owner's Manual or in published user-
repair instructions that you understand
and have the skills to carry out.
• See the "Installation Requirements"
section for grounding requirements.

Location Requirements
Selecting the proper location for your
washer improves performance and mini-
mizes noise and possible washer "walk."
Your washer can be installed in a base-
ment, laundry room, closet, or recessed
area. (See "Drain System.")
Proper installation is your responsibility.
You will need:
• A water heater set to deliver 120°F
(49°C) water to the washer.
• A grounded electrical outlet located
within 4 ft (1.2 m) of where the power
cord is attached to the back of the
washer. (See "Electrical Requirements.")
• Hot and cold water faucets located with-
in 4 ft (1.2 m) of the hot and cold water
fill valves, and water pressure of 5-100
psi (34.5-689.6 kPa). Washers with
triple dispensers require 20-100 psi
(138.0-689.6 kPa) for best performance.
• A level floor with a maximum slope of
1 in. (2.5 cm) under entire washer.
Installing the washer on carpeting is not
recommended.
• A sturdy floor to support the washer
weight (washer, water and load) of 315
Ibs (143 kgs).
Do not store or operate your washer in
temperatures at or below 32°F (0°C).
Some water can remain in the washer and
can cause damage in low temperatures.
See "Washer Care" for winterizing infor-
mation.
Recessed area or closet installation
The dimensions shown are for the rec-
ommended spacing allowed, except the
closet door ventilation openings. The
dimensions shown for the closet door
ventilation openings are the minimum
required.

• Additional spacing should be consid-
ered for ease of instaUaUon and servic-
ing.
• Additional clearances may be required
for wall, door and floor moldings.
• Additional spacing of 1 in. (2.5 cm) on
all sides of the washer is recommend*
ed to reduce noise transfer.
• If a closet door is instaUed, the mini-
mum air openings in the top and bot-
tom of the door are required. Louvered
doors with air openings in the top and
bottom are acceptable.
• Companion appliance spacing should
also be considered.

Drain System
The washer can be installed using the
standpipe drain system (floor or wall), the
laundry tub drain system, or the floor
drain system. Select the drain hose instal-
lation method you need. (See "Alternate
Parts.")

The floor drain system requires a siphon
break that may be purchased separately.
(See "Alternate Parts.")
The siphon break must be a minimum of
28 in. (71 cm) from the bottom of the
washer. Additional hoses might be
needed.
Electrical Requirements

Standpipe drain system -wall or floor
(view 1 & 2)
The standpipe drain requires a minimum
diameter standpipe of 2 in. (5 cm). The
minimum carry-away capacity can be no
less than 17 gaL (64 L) per minute. A2 in.
(5 cm) diameter to 1 in. (2.5 cm) diameter
standpipe adapter kit is available. (See
"Alternate Parts.")
The top of the standpipe must be at least
39 in. (99 cm) high and no higher than 96
in. (2.4 m) from the bottom of the washer.
Electrical Shock Hazard
Plug into a grounded
3 prong outlet.
Do not remove ground prong.
Do not use an adapter.
Do not use an extension cord.
Failure to follow these
instructions can result in
death, fire, or electrical shock.
• A 120-volt, 60-Hz., AC-only, 15- or 20-
ampere, fused electrical supply is
required. Time-delay fuse or circuit
breaker is recommended. It is recom-
mended that a separate circuit serving
only this appliance be provided.
• This washer is equipped with a power
supply cord having a 3 prong ground
plug.
Laundry tub drain system (view 1)
The laundry tub needs a minimum 20 gal.
(76 L) capacity. The top of the laundry tub
must be at least 39 in, (99 cm) above the
floor and no higher than 96 in, (2.4 m)
from the bottom of the washer.

• To minimize possible shock hazard, the
cord must be plugged into a mating, 3
prong, ground4ype outlet, grounded in
accordance with local codes and ordi-
nances. If a mating outlet is not avail-
able, it is the personal responsibility and
obligation of the customer to have the
properly grounded outlet installed by a
qualified electrician.
• If codes permit and a separate ground
wire is used, it is recommended that a
qualified electrician determine that the
ground path is adequate.
• Do not ground to a gas pipe.
• Check with a qualified electrician if you
are not sure the washer is properly
grounded.
• Do not have a fuse in the neutral or
ground circuit.

GROUNDING
INSTRUCTIONS
For a grounded, cord-connected
washer:
This washer must be grounded. In the
event of a malfunction or breakdown,
grounding will reduce the risk of
electrical shock by providing a path of
least resistance for electric current. Thi.'
washer is equipped with a cord having
an equipment-grounding conductor ant
a grounding plug. The plug must be
plugged into an appropriate outlet that
is properly installed and grounded in
accordance with all local codes and
ordinances.
WARNING: Improper connection of
the equipment-grounding conductor can
result in a risk of electric shock. Check
with a qualified electrician or service-
man if you are in doubt as to whether
the appliance is properly grounded.
Do not modify the plug provided with
the appliance - if it will not fit the outlet
have a proper outlet installed by a
qualified electrician.
For a permanently connected
washer:
This washer must be connected to a
grounded metal, permanent wiring
system, or an equipment grounding
conductor must be run with the circuit
conductors and connected to the
equipment-grounding terminal or lead
on the appliance.

Before You Start 3. Cut the shipping strap about 16 in.
(40 cm) from plug end, Look for the
words "CUT HERE." Discard end with
the cotter pins. Slide remainder of
shipping strap from the power cord.
You will use the remainder of the
shipping strap later to secure the
drain hose.
• To prevent floor damage, set the
washer onto cardboard before moving
across floor.
• Move the washer to within approximate-
ly 3 ft (90 cm) of the final location.
Remove Shipping Strap
Removing the shipping strap is necessary
for smooth operation. If the shipping strap
is not removed, the washer will make
excessive noise.
1, Do not cut yellow strap. Pull yellow
strap firmly, until completely removed
from washer. Depending on your
model, there will be either two or three
cotter pins on the end of the shipping
strap when it is pulled out of the
washer. The electrical plug is attached
to this shipping strap.
2, Pull firmly to remove the end of the
shipping strap that remains pinned to
the back of the washer, This will
release the rear self-leveling feet.
Connect Drain Hose
Proper connection of the drain hose will
protect your floors from damage due to
water leakage, To prevent the drain hose
from coming off or leaking, it must be
installed per the following instructions.
IMPORTANT: To ensure proper installa-
tion, this procedure must be followed
exactly.
1. Check the drain hose to see if it is
the proper length.

Wet the inside of the straight end of
the drain hose with tap water, DO
NOT USE ANY OTHER LUBRICANT.
Squeeze ears of silver, double-wire
clamp with pliers to open, Place
clamp over the straight end of the
drain hose ¼ in. (6 ram) from the end.

4. Open clamp. Twist hose back and
forth while pushing down onto drain
connector at the bottom of the wash-
er, Continue until hose contacts the
ribbed stop on the cabinet.

For standpipe or laundry tub drain
systems:
1. Open yellow, single-wire clamp with
pliers and slide over hooked end of
drain hose to secure the rubber and
corrugated sections together.
• For floor drain installation, see kit num-
ber required under "Alternate Parts."

Connect the Inlet Hoses
Insert new flat washers (supplied) into
each end of the inlet hoses. Firmly _
seat the washers in the couplings.

Connect the inlet hoses to the water
faucets
Make sure the washer basket is empty.
2, Attach the hose with the red coupling
to the hot water faucet, Screw on cou-
pling by hand until seated on the
washer.
3, Attach the hose with the blue coupling
to the cold water faucet, Screw on
coupling by hand until seated on the
washer.
4, Using pliers, tighten the couplings with
an additional two4hirds turn.

2. Put hooked end of drain hose into
laundry tub or standpipe. Rotate
hook to eliminate kinks.
To prevent drain water from going
back into the washer:
• Do not straighten hooked end of drain
hose. Do not force excess drain hose
into standpipe. Hose should be
secure, but loose enough to provide a
gap of air.
• Do not lay excess drain hose in bottom
of laundry tub.
NOTE: Do not overtighten. Damage to
the valves can result.

Clear the water lines
5. Run water through both faucets and
inlet hoses, into a bucket or laundry
tub, to get rid of particles in the water
lines that might clog the inletvalve
screens,
Connect the inlet hoses to the washer
6. Attach the hose with the red coupling
to the HOT (bottom) inlet valve.
Attaching the red coupling first makes
it easier to tighten connection with
pliers. Screw on coupling by hand
until seated on the washer, Using pli-
ers, tighten the couplings with an
additional two4hirds turn.
NOTE: Do not overtighten. Damage
to the valves can result.

NOTE: The inlet valve may be on the
right or the left side of the washer,
depending on your model.
7. Attach the hose with the blue cou-
pling to the COLD water (top) inlet
valve. Screw on coupling by hand
until seated on the washer. Using pli-
ers, tighten the couplings with an
additional two4hirds turn.
NOTE: Do not overtighten. Damage
to the valves can result.
Check for leaks
8. Turn on the water faucets and check
for leaks. A small amount of water
might enter the washer. You will drain
this later.
NOTE: Replace inlet hoses after 5
years of use to reduce the risk of hose
failure. Record hose installation or
replacement dates for future reference.
• Ifyou only connect one water
hose, you must cap off the remain-
ing water inlet port,
• Periodically inspect and replace
hoses if bulges, kinks, cuts, wear,
or leaks are found.

Secure the Drain Hose
Drape the power cord over the console.
Remove any cardboard used to move
washer.
Locate the remaining piece of ship-
ping strap (not the end with the cotter
pins) from step 3 of "Remove
Shipping Strap," Use it to wrap the
drain hose together with the laundry
tub or standpipe. Push fastener into
the nearest hole in the shipping strap.

4, Wrap the drain hose to the laundry
tub leg or standpipe with the tie strap.
(See illustration.)
If the washer faucets and the drain
standpipe are recessed, put the
hooked end of the drain hose in the
standpipe, Tightly wrap the tie strap
around the water inlet hoses and the
drain hose.
Level the Washer
Properly leveling your washer prevents
excessive noise and vibration.
Install the front leveling feet
1, Prop up the front of the washer about
4 in. (10.2 cm) with a wood block or
similar object. The block needs to
support the weight of the washer.
2, Screw the lock nut onto each foot to
within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the base.

3, Screw the feet into the correct holes
at the front corner of the washer until
the nuts touch the washen
NOTE: Do not tighten the nuts until
the washer is level.

by placing alevel on the top edges

Check to be sure you have all of
your tools.
Check to be sure that the yellow
shipping strap was removed from the
back of the washer and used to
secure the drain hose.
Dispose/recycle all packaging
materials.
Check to be sure the water faucets
are on.
Check for leaks around faucets and
inlet hoses.
If the washer is not level, move the
washer out slightly, tip back, prop up
the front of the washer with the wood
block and adjust the feet up or down
as necessary. Repeat this step until
washer is level.
7. After the washer is in the final loca-
tion and level, use a %6in. (1.43 cm)
opemend wrench to turn the nuts on
the feet tightly against the washer
cabinet.
If the nuts are not tight against the
washer cabinet, the washer may
vibrate.
8, Tilt the washer forward until the rear
of the washer is at least 4 in. (10.2
cm) off the floor, You may hear the
self-adjusting rear feet click into
place. Lower the washer to the floor.
Complete Installation
1, Check the electrical requirements. Be
sure that you have the correct electri-
cal supply and the recommended
grounding method. (See "Electrical
Requirements.")
2, Check to be sure all parts are now
installed, If there is an extra part, go
back through the steps to see which
step was skipped.

Remove the protective film on the
console and any tape remaining on
the washer.
Read "Washer Use,"
To test your washer, measure half of
the normal recommended amount of
powdered or liquid detergent and
pour it into the washer basket or
detergent dispenser (on some mod-
els), Close the lid. Select any cycle,
and then press START. Allow it to
complete one whole cycle.

To get the maximum cleaning and
fabric care from your washer, please
read and follow these instructions.
NOTE: The drawings in this section show
the basic features of all models covered
by this manual. Refer to the supplied
"Feature Sheet" for your washer's
particular features. Fire Hazard
Never place items in the washer
that are dampened with gasoline
or other flammable fluids.
No washer can completely
remove oil.
Do not dry anything that has ever
had any type of oil on it (including
cooking oils).
Doing so can result in death,
explosion, or fire.
LID INSTRUCTIONS
These instructions are found under the
lid of your washer.

DISPENSER Add measured liquid chlorine bleach to the
dispenser, 5 min. after the washer cycle starts for
best wash performance.
Do not use POWDERED BLEACH IN THIS
DISPENSER.
Add measured fabric softener to the agitator
mounted dispenser.
Add measured detergent to the washer basket.

Antiperspirants, Deodorants
Treat with a paste of ammonia and
color safe bleach. Let stand for 30 min-
utes. Wash in hottest water safe for
fabric.
Blood
Rinse immediately or soak in cold
water with detergent for 30 minutes.
Rinse. Rub detergent into any remain-
ing stains. Rinse thoroughly. Wash.
Cream, Milk, Ice Cream
Sponge immediately or apply a pre-
wash soil and stain remover. Rinse.
Wash. Repeat if necessary. If stain
remains, apply a few drops of liquid
detergent. Rinse. If stain remains, soak.
Wash.
Grass
Use an enzyme presoak or rub enzyme
detergent on the stain. Launder with
detergent and bleach appropriate for
the fabric.
Ketchup, Tomato Products
Sponge immediately or apply a
prewash soil and stain remover. Rinse.
Wash. If stain remains, apply a liquid
detergent to stain or soak in warm
water with detergent. Rewash.
Mud
Brush offthe dry mud. Rinse under
cold water. Pretreat with a paste of
detergent and water. Launder using
detergent and bleach safe for the
fabric.

STARTING WASHER
1, Add measured detergent directly into
washer basket. Then place a load of
sorted clothes in the washer.
2, (OPTIONAL STEP) If desired, add
measured liquid chlorine bleach to the
liquid bleach dispenser.
3, (OPTIONAL STEP) If desired, add
measured liquid fabric softener to the
fabric softener dispenser (if available).
4, Close washer lid.
5, Set WATER LEVEL Control Q based
on the size of your wash load.

SET WATER LEVEL CONTROL SET WATER TEMPERATURE
CONTROL
This control gives you the flexibility to
save water when washing small loads.
Your washer lets you select a water
setting based on the size of your wash
load.
• For normal loads, start with the
medium load setting. Adjust up or down
depending on your load. Clothes should
move freely and roll toward the agitator.
• To change to ahigher water level setting
after the washer has started to agitate,
turn the knob to the desired new setting.

Your washer lets you select a wash and
rinse water temperature setting based
on the type of load you are washing.

Some washers allow you to select
warm rinses:
• Using warm rinse water will leave loads
dryer after the spin cycle than if you use _
cold rinse water. However, warm rinses
may increase wrinkling when line drying.
• In cold climates, warm rinse water also
provides a more comfortable tempera-
ture for handling the wash load.

*In wash water tern eratures colder than 70°F (21°C), detergents do not dissolve well. Also,
soils may be difficult to remove and some fabrics may retain wear wrinkles and have
increased pilling - the formation of small lint-like balls on the surface of garments. Pilling is
the naturai result of wearing and washing of garments.

SETTING YOUR CYCLE
SELECTOR (TIMER) CONTROL
Use this control to choose the agitation
time and to start the washer. Each cycle
is designed with the wash and spin
speeds that are appropriate for the fab-
rics and soil levels in your wash load.
• For heavy soil and sturdy fabrics, use
the full time (SUPER or REGULAR
if indicated).
• For light soil and delicate fabrics, use less
time (SHORT if indicated).
NOTE: Some "Hand Wash" items,
particularly wool, naturally shrink when
washed. Keep this in mind when you
purchase items labeled "Hand Wash,"
Items that shrink should be dried fiat.
When still wet, block these items by
gently stretching to original measure-
ments.
PERMANENT PRESS
You can select up to 10 minutes of
wash time.
DELICATE
Use this cycle to get up to 6 minutes
of wash time for lingerie and loosely
knit items.

The PERMANENT PRESS/DELICATE
Cycles include aload cooling process
that reduces wrinkling compared to
other cycles.
• Wash combines slow speed agitation for
gentle soil removal and slow spin speeds
to reduce wrinkling.
NORMAL
Use this cycle to get up to 10 minutes
of wash time for normally soiled cottons
and linens,
• Wash combines fast and slow speed
agitation with fast spin speeds to
shorten drying time.
• Selecting REGULAR gives you fast
agitation speeds initially, then the washer
steps down to a slow agitation speed.
• Selecting SHORT gives you slow
agitation speed.
HEAVY DUTY

• Wash combines fast speed agitation and
fast spin speeds.
PREWASH (on some models)
Use this cycle to get up to 4 minutes of
agitation to help remove heavy soils and
stains that need pretreatment. PREWASH
Cycle should be followed by a HEAVY
DUTY, NORMAL, PERMANENT PRESS
or DELICATE cycle with additional
detergent.
SOAK (on some models)
SOAK Cycle features 4 minutes of
agitation followed by an unlimited soak
time to help remove heavy soils and
stains that need pretreatment. You will
need to reset the washer to a SPIN
setting to remove water, SOAK Cycle
should be followed by a HEAVY DUTY,
NORMAL, PERMANENT PRESS,
DELICATE or PREWASH cycle with
additional detergent,
NOTE: We do not recommend hot water
for soaking. It may set some stains.

2ND RINSE (on some models)
A second rinse removes excess
detergent residue.
1. Set the WATER LEVEL Control.
2, Set the WATER TEMPERATURE
Control.
3. Set the Cycle Selector Control (Timer)
to 2ND RINSE.
4. Pull the Timer knob out to start the
washer.
NOTE: You may select an additional
SPIN only.
•Set the Timer knob to SPIN.
• An additional spin may shorten drying
times for heavy fabrics or special-care
items by removing excess water.
RINSE AND SPIN
When using extra detergent for heavily
soiled clothes, or washing special-care
items, you may find an extra rinse and
spin is needed,
1. Set WATER LEVEL Control.
2, Set WATER TEMPERATURE Control,
3. Set the Cycle Selector Control (Timer)
Knob to a RINSE setting:
• For fast agitation and spin, use the
HEAVY DUTY Cycle.
• For slow agitation and spin, use the
PERMANENT PRESS Cycle.
• For slow agitation and fast spin, use the
NORMAL Cycle.
4. Pull Cycle Selector Control
(Timer) Knob out to start washer.
SPIN ONLY
A drain and spin may help shorten drying
times for some heavy fabrics or special-
care items by removing excess water.
1, Set the Cycle Selector Control (Timer)
Knob to a SPIN setting:
• For fast spin, use the NORMAL Cycle.
• For slow spin, use the PERMANENT
PRESS Cycle.
2, Pull the Cycle Selector Control (Timer)
Knob out to start washer.
