This water heater is equipped for one type gasonly.Check the
model rating plate near the gascontrol valvefor the correct gas.

Failure to use the correct gas can cause problems which can
result in DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJUI_, OR PROPERTY

AWARNING
INSTALLATIONS IN AREAS WHERE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS I
(VAPORS) ARE LIKELY TO BE PRESENT OR STORED
(GARAGES, STORAGE, AND UTILITY AREAS, ETC):
Flammable liquids(such as gasoline, solvents,propane (LP) or
butane, etc.), all of which emit flammable vapors, may be
improperly stored or used in such areas. The gaswater heater
pilot light or main burner can ignite suchvapors. The resulting
flashbackand fire can causedeath or seriousburns to anyonein
the area, aswell asproperty damage.
If installation in suchareas isyour only option, then the installa-
tion must be accomplished in a way that the pilot flame and
main burner game are elevated from the floor at least Ig inches.
While this may reduce the changesof flammable vapors from a
floor spillbeing ignited, gasolineand other flammable substances
should never be stored or used in the same room or area con-
taining a gaswater heater or other open flame or spark produc-
ingappliance.
NOTE: Flammable vapors may be drawn by air currents from
other areas of the structure to the appliance.
AWARNING
If this water heater will be used in beauty shops,barber shops,
cleaning establishments, or self-service laundries with dry
cleaning equipment, it is imperative that the water heater or
water heaters be installed so that combustion and ventilation
air be taken from outside these areas. Refer to the "Facts to
Consider About the Location" section of this manual and also
the latest edition of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1
also referred to as NFPA 54 for specifics provided concernin
!air required.

A fire can start if combustible materials such as clothing, I
cleaning materials, or flammable liquids are placed against
or next to the water heater.
AWARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provided
with a combination temperature-pressures relief valve certified
by anationally recognized testing laboratory that maintains
)eriodic inspection of production of listed equipment or mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valves and
Automatic Gas Shutoff Devicesfor Hot Water SupplySystems,
and the latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the code require-
ments of ASME If replaced, the valve must meet the require-
,•,
ments of local codes,but not lessthan a combmaUon tempera-
ture and pressure relief valve cert fled as meet ng the require-
ments for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for
Hot Water Suppy Systems, ANS Z2 .22 by a nat onaily recog-
nized testing laboratory that maintains periodic inspection of
production of listed equipment or materials.
The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressure not
to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure of the
water heater (150 Ibs./sq.in.) and a dischargecapacity not less
than the water heater input rate asshown on the model rating
plate. (Electric heaters - watts divided by 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the useof a
temperature-pressure relief valve complying with ANSI Z21.22
and ASME, may require a valve model different from the one
furnishedwith the water heater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be satisfied by
the installer or end user of the water heater with a locallypre-
scribed temperature-pressure relief valve installed in the desig-
nated opening in the water heater in place of the factory fur-
nishedvalve.
For safeoperation of the water heater, the relief valve must not
be removed from it's designatedopening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be installeddirectly
into the fitting of the water heater designatedfor the relief valve,
Position the valve downward and providetubing so that any dis.
charge will exit only within 6 inches above, or at any distance
below the structural floor. Be certain that no contact is made
with any live electrical part. The dischargeopening must not be
blocked or reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessive
length, ever 30 feet, or useof more than four elbows can cause
restriction and reduce the dischargecapacityofthe valve.
No valve or other obstruction isto be placedbetween the relief
valve and the tank. Do not connect tubing directly to discharge
drain unlessa 6" air gap isprovided.To prevent bodilyinjury,haz-
ard to life, or property damage, the relief valve must be allowed
to dischargewater in quantities shouldcircumstancesdemand. If
the dischargepipe is not connected to a drain or other suitable
means,the water flow may causeproperty damage•
The Discharge Pipe:
• Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of the
valve, or have anyreducing couplingsor other restrictions.
• Must not be plugged or blocked.
i• Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
•Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of both
the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
Must terminate at an adequate dram.
Must not haveany valve between the relief valve and tank.

Safety Precautions

A gas water heater cannot operate properly without the cor-
rect amount of air for combustion. Do not instaJIin a confined
area sucha closet, unlessyou provide air as shown in the "Facts
to Consider About the Location" section. Never obstruct the
flow ofventilation air. If you have any doubts or questionsat all,
callyour gascompany. Failure to provide the proper amount of
combustion air can result in a fire or explosion and can cause
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJUR_,OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
&WARNING
This water heater must not be installed directly on carpeting.
Carpeting must be protected by a metal or wood panel
beneath the appliance extending beyond the full width and
depth of the appliance by at least 3 inches (76.2mm) in any
direction, or if the appliance is installed in an alcove or closet,
the entire flour must be covered by the panel. Failure to heed
this warning may result in a fire hazard.

are availableat plumbing supplyor hardware stores. Followman-

changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the

Soot build-up indicates a problem that requires correction ]
before further use. Turn "OFF" gas to water heater and leave [
"OFF" until repairs are made, because failure to correct the
cause of the sooting can result in a fire or explosion causing
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJUR_,OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
&WARNING
VENT DAMPERS - Any vent damper, whether it is operated
thermally or otherwise must be removed ifits use inhibitsprop-
er drafting of the water heater.
Thermally Operated Vent Dampers: Gas-fired water heaters
havingthermal efficiency in excessof 80% may produce a rela-
tively low flue gastemperature. Such temperatures may not be
high enough to properly open thermally operated vent
dampers. This would causespillageofflue gasesand may cause
carbon monoxide poisoning.
Vent dampers must bear evidence of certification as complying
with the latest edition of American National Standard ANSI
Z21.68 (ANSI Z21.66 & 67, respectively, cover electrically and
mechanically actuated vent dampers). Before installation of any
vent damper, consult your local SearsService Center or the gas
utility for further information.
&WARNING
• The appliance and its individual shutoff valve must be discon-
nected from the gas supplypipingsystem during any pressure
testing of the gas system at test pressures in excess of V2
pound per square inch (3.5kPa).
•The appliancemust be isolated from the gassupplypipingsys.
tem by closingits individual manual shutoff valve during any
pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at test pres-
suresequal or lessthan _pound per squareinch (3.5kPa).

BEFORE LIGHTING PROPANE (LR) GAS WATER HEATERS:
Propane (LR) gas isheavier than air. Should there be a leak in
the system, the gas will settle near the ground. Basements,
crawl spaces, skirted areas under mobile homes (even when
ventilated), closets and areas below ground level will serve
pockets for the accumulation of this gas. Before attempting to
light or relight the water heater_ pilot or turning on a nearby
electrical light switch, he absolutely sure there isno accumulat-
ed gas in the area. Search for odor of gasby sniffingat ground
level in the vicinity of the appliance. If odor isdetected, follow
steps indicated at "For Your Safety" on the cover page of this
manual then leavethe premises.
&WARNING
Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system may
occur if air for combustion contains certain chemical vapors.
Spray can propellants, cleaning solvents, refrigerator and air
conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool chemicals, calcium
and sodium chloride, waxes, bleach,and processchemicals are
typical compounds which are potentially corrosive.

tion, and maintenance of the gas-fired water heater. It also
contains warnings through out the manual that you must
read and be aware of. All warnings and all instructions are
essential to the proper operation of the water heater and your
safety. Since we cannot put everything on the first few pages,

The gas fired water heater is design certified by CSA INTER-
NATIONAL under American National StandardlCSA
Standard for Gas Water Heaters for Installation in
Manufactured Houses, (Mobile Homes).

Carefully plan the place where you are going to put the water
heater. Correct combustion, vent action, and vent pipe instal-
lation are very important in preventing death from possible
carbon monoxide poisoning and fires.
Examine the location to ensure the water heater complies with
the "Facts to Consider About the Location" section in this
manual.
For California installation this water heater must be braced,
anchored, or strapped to avoid falling or moving during an
earthquake. See instructions for correct installation proce-
dures. Instructions may be obtained from your local dealer,
wholesaler, public utilities or California Office of the State
Architect, 400 P Street, Sacramento, CA 95814.
Complies with SCAQMD rule #1121 and districts having
equivalent NOx requirements.

Installation Instructions
Removing the Old Water Heater
Turn "OFF" the gassupply to the water heater.
_,WARNING ]
If the main gas line shutoff serving all gasappliances is/
used,also shut "OFF" the gasat each appliance.Leaveall/
gasappliances shut "OFF" until the water heater installa./
tion iscomplete. ]
Turn water to the water
"OFF" the
heater. Some installations require that
the water be turned off to the entire
house.
Check again to make sure the gas supply
is "OFF" to the water heater. Then dis-
connect the gas supply connection from
the gas control valve.
Attach a hose to the water heater drain
valve and put the other end in a floor
drain or outdoors. Open the water
heater drain valve. Open a nearby hot
water faucet which will relieve pressure
in the water heater and speed draining.
Disconnect the vent pipe from the draft hood where
they connect to the water heater. In most installations
the vent pipe can be lifted off after any screw or other
attached devices are removed. Dispose of the draft
hood. The new water heater has the draft hood which
must be used for proper operation.

a, If you have copper piping to the water
heater, the two copper water pipes can
be cut with a hacksaw approximately 4"
away from where they connect to the
water heater. This will avoid cutting off"
the pipes too short. Additional cuts can
be made later if necessary. Disconnect
the temperature-pressure relief valve
drain line. When the water heater is
drained, disconnect the hose from the
drain valve. Close the drain valve. The
water heater is now completely discon-
nected and ready to be removed.

heater, loosen the two galvanized pipes
with a pipe wrench at the union in each
line. Also disconnect the piping remain-
ing to the water heater. These pieces
should be saved since they may be need-
ed when reconnecting the new water
heater. Disconnect the temperature-pres-
sure relief valve drain line. When the
water heater is drained, disconnect the
hose from the drain valve. Close the
drain valve. The water heater is now
completely disconnected and ready to be
removed.

Facts to Consider About the
Location
Whether replacing an old water heater or putting the water
heater in a new location, the following critical points must be
observed.
This mobile home gas-fired water heater is for use in amobile
home. You should carefully choose an indoor location for the
new water heater, because the placement is avery important
consideration for the safety of the occupants in the building
and for the most economical use of the appliance. This water
heater is for use only in mobile homes and is not intended
for outdoor installation.
INSTALLATION METHOD B: An optional enclosure
incorporating a solid exterior access door, when a 5" or 8" diame-
ter, or 20 square inch minimum equivalent free air opening is
located in the floor of the enclosure. The opening must be cov-
ered by a '/4" wire mesh.
ENCLOSURE INSTALLATIONS:
The installation of this water heater must be within an
enclosure so as to separate the appliance combustion sys-
tem and venting system from the interior atmosphere of the
mobile home. There shall not be any door, removable
access panel, or other opening into the enclosure from the
inside of the mobile home. This water heater must be
installed using Method A or B.
INSTALLATION METHOD A: An enclosure with an exte-
rior access door incorporating asingle opening positioned a
maximum of 6" above the lower edge of the access door and
which may incorporate either 7/' wire mesh or louvers. When
'/4"wire mesh is used, the size of the opening must be a mini-
mum of 20 square inches. When the louvers are used, the area

Minimum clearances between the water heater and com-
bustible construction are I" at the sides and roar, 4" at the
front, and 6"from the vent pipe. Clearance from the top of the
jacket is 12"on most models. Note that a lesserdimension may
be allowed on some models. Refer to the label on the water
heater adjacent to the gascontrol valvefor allclearances.
The water heater should be secured to the floor and to the wall
of the enclosure with the mounting brackets provided. For
bracket location refer to "Securing Water Heater to Floor and

Wben a mobile home is skirted, an air intake opening witb a
minimum free area of 32 square inches must be provided in the
skirt. If the opening is covered by louvers or screen, the total free

to an adequate drain. The pan must not restrict combustion air
flow. Under no circumstances is the manufacturor or Sears to
be held liable for any water damage in connection with this
water heater.
When a drain pan is required, the installation must conform to
"Method A" on page 9.

Securing Water Heater to
Floor and Wall
The water heater must be secured to the floor and to the wall
of the enclosure with the three mounting brackets and screws
cackaged in the carton with the water heater. The two small
rackets stamped #0110064 are used to attach the water heater
to the floor and the one large #0110063 bracket is used to
secure the top of the water heater to the wall.
Because of installation variances these brackets can be located
at any points around the circumference of the acket. When
the bracket ocations are determined using the %drill bit for
a pattern, drill only through the outer jacket of the water
heater. Then using the screws provided, secure the bracket to
the water heater, floor and wall.

nections.
NOTE: If using copper tubing, solder tubing to an adapter
before attaching the adaptor to the cold water inlet connec-
tion. Do not solder the cold water supply line directly to the
cold water inlet. It will harm the dip tube and damage the
tank.

•Look at the top cover of the water heater.The water outlet is
marked hot. Put two or three turns of teflon tape around the
threaded end of the I:hreaded-to-sweat coupling and around
both ends of the ¼" threaded nipple. Using flexible connec-
tors, connect the hot water pipe to the hot water outlet of the
water heater.
• Look at the lower right side of the water heater. The cold
water inlet is marked cold. Put two or three turns of teflon
tape around the threaded end of the threaded-to-sweat cou-
plingand around both ends of the ¼" threaded nipple. Using
flexible connectors, connect the cold water pipe to the cold
water inlet of the water heater.
WATER PIPING PRESSURE TEST
This section is only for the mobile home matnufacturer installing
the water heater when the installation is to comply with H.U.D.
Standards.
When testing the water ways, H.U.D. Standards state:
"Water distribution system. All water piping in the water dis-
tribution system shall be subjected to a pressuretest. The test
shall be made by subjecting the system to air or water at I00
psi for 15 minutes without loss of pressure. When air pres-
sure is used, the water heater shall not be connected dur-
ing the test."
NOTE: This water heater is insulated to minimize heat loss
from the tank. Further reduction in heat loss can he accom-
plished by insulating the hot water lines from the water
heater.

Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve

At the time of manufacture this water heater was provided
with acombination temperature-pressures relief valve certified
by a nationally recognized testing laboratory that maintains
_riodic inspection of production of listed equipment or mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valves and
Automatic Gas Shutoff Devicesfor Hot Water Supply Systems,
and the latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the code require-
ments of ASME. If replaced, the valve must meet the require-
ments of local codes, but not lessthan a combination tempera-
ture and pressure relief valve certified as meeting the require-
ments for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for
Hot Water SupplySystems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally recog.
nized testing laboratory that maintains periodic inspection of
production of listed equipment or materials.
The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressure not
to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure of the
water heater (150 Ibs./sq.in.) and a dischargecapacity not less
than the water heater input rate asshown on the model rating
plate. (Electric heaters - watts divided by 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the useof a
temperature-pressure relief valve complying with ANSI Z21.22
and ASME, may require a valve model different from the one
furnishedwith the water heater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be satisfied by
the installer or end user of the water heater with a locally pre-
scribedtemperature-pressure relief valve installed in the desig-
nated opening in the water heater in place of the factory fur-
nishedvalve.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve must not
be removed from it'sdesignated opening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be installed directly
into the fitting ofthe water heater designatedfor the relief valve.
Position the valvedownward and providetubing so that anydis-
charge will exit only within 6 inches above, or at any distance
below the structural floor Be certain that no contact is made
with any live electrical part. The dischargeopening must not be
blocked or reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessive
length, over 30 feet, or use of more than four elbows can cause
restriction and reduce the dischargecapacityofthe valve.

valve and the _nk. Do not connect tubing directly to discharge

Filling the Water Heater
ACAUTION
Never use this water heater unless it is completely filled with
water. To prevent damage to the tank, the tank must be filled
with water. Water must flow from the hot water faucet
before tumlng "ON" gasto the water heater.
To fill the water heater with water:
Close the water heater drain valve by turning the handle to
the right (clockwise). The drain valve is on the lower front of
the water heater.
• Open the cold water supply valve to the water heater.
NOTE: The cold water supply valve must be left open
when the water heater is in use.
•To insure complete filling of the tank, allow air to exit by
opening the nearest hot water faucet. Allow water to run
until a constant flow is obtained. This will let air out of the
water heater and the piping.
•Check all new water piping for leaks. Repair as needed.
Venting
• Place the draft hood legs in the receiving holes on the top of
the water heater. The legs will snap in the holes to give a
tight fit.
• Place the vent pipe over the draft hood. With the vent pipe
in position, drill a small hole through both the vent pipe and
draft hood. Secure them together with a sheet metal screw.

VENT DAMPERS - Any vent damper, whether it is
operated thermally or otherwise must be removed if its
use inhibits proper drafting of the water heater.
Thermally Operated Vent Dampers: Gas-fired water
heaters having thermal efficiency in excess of 80% may
produce a relatively low flue gas temperature. Such
temperatures may not be high enough to properly open
thermally operated vent dampers. This would cause
spillage of flue gases and may cause carbon monoxide
poisoning.
Vent dampers must bear evidence of certification as
complying with the latest edition of the American
National Standard ANSI Z21.68 (ANSI Z21.66 & 67,
respectively, cover electrically and mechanically actuat-
ed vent dampers). Before installation of any vent
damper, consult the local Sears Service Center or gas
utility for further information. 14

To insure proper venting of this gas-fired water heater, the
correct vent pipe diameter must be utilized. Any additions or
deletions of other gasappliances on a common vent with this
water heater may adversely affect the operation of the water

Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system
may occur if air for combustion contains certain chemical
vapors. Spray can propellants, cleaning solvents, refrigera-
tor and air conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool
chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, waxes, bleach
and process chemicals are typical compounds which are
potentially corrosive.
Gas Piping

Make sure the gas supplied is the same type listed on the
model rating plate. The inlet gas pressure must not exceed
10o5in. water column (2o6kPa) for natural gasor 13 in. water
column (3.2kPa) for propane (L.P.) gas. The minimum inlet
gas pressure listed on the model rating plate is for the pur-
pose of input adjustment.

If the gas control valve is subjected to pressures exceeding ½

SEDIMENT TRAP
A gas line of su_cient size must be run to the water heater.
Consult the latest edition of National Fuel Gas Code ANSI
Z223.1, also referred to as NFPA 54 and the gas company con-
cerning pipe size.
There must be:
•A readily accessible manual shut offvalve in the gas supply line
serving the water heater, and
• A drip leg (sediment trap) ahead of the gas control valve to help
prevent dirt and foreign materials from entering the gas control
valve.
• A flexible gas connector or a ground joint union between the
shutoffvalve and control valve to permit servicing of the unit.
A sediment trap shall be installed as close to the inlet of the
water heater as practical at the time of water heater installation.
The sediment trap shall be either a tee fitting with a capped nip-
ple in the bottom outlet or other device recognized as an effec-

Be sure to check all the gas piping for leaks before li_;hting the
water heater. Use a soapy water solution, not a match or open
flame. Rinse offsoapy solution and wipe dry. _,WARNING
Contaminants in the gaslines may cause improper operation
of the gas control valve that may result in fire or explosion.
Before attaching the gas line be sure that all gaspipe isclean
on the inside. To trap any dirt or foreign material in the gas
supply line, a drip leg (sometimes called a sediment trap)
must be incorporated in the piping. The drip leg must be
readily accessible. Install in accordance with the "Gas Piping"
section. Refer to the latest edition of the National Fuel Gas
Code, ANSI Z223.1, also referred to as NFPA 54.

"Fuel" Conversion Instruc-
tions From Natural Gas To
Propane (L.P.) Gas
AWARNING
This water heater has been factory equipped to operate
with the type gas indicated in the "EQUIPPED FOR" area
of the model rating plate located near the gas control
valve. The indicated gas may be either Natural or
Propane (L.P.). By following the conversion instructions in
this manual or the instructions near the gas control valve,
the water heater must be converted if it is to be used
with the opposite gas. DO NOT USE THIS WATER
HEATER WITH ANY GAS OTHER THAN THE ONE
LISTED ON THE MODEL RATING PLATE. Failure to use
the correct gas can cause problems which can result in
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY
DAMAGE. If you have any questions or doubts consult
your gas supplier or gas company.
Read and follow detailed conversion instructions located on the
water heater and also in this manual in their entirety before starting
the conversion.
Conversion kit with necessary parts are in a bag attached to the
drain valve.

Turn gas control knob "A" to "PILOT". Depress and turn
"OFF". (See Figure 1, page 17).
Remove outer and inner access doors from water heater.
Remove burner assembly from water heater and control by
loosen'ng ¾" nut H" holding burner assembly to control.
(See Figure 2, page 17). Loosen pilot tube nut "J" and
thermocouple nut "K" at control.
Remove screws "D" disengaging manifold from burner.
(See Figure 3, page 17)
Remove orifice E (See Figure 3, page 17) using
wrench. Install orifice marked "L.P." found in the bag
into manifold. Tighten securely. Secure burner to mani-
fold with screws "D'.
Step 6. Loosen pilot tube nut "F" (See Figure 4, page 17). Re-
move orifice "G and replace w'th blue colored orifice
found in bag. Reinstall nut "F" and tighten securely.
Step 7. Make sure all connections are tightened securely, and rein-
stall burner assembly into water heater. Position end of the
manifold inside bracket as shown in Figure 3 on page 17.
Reinstall manifold into control and tighten 54' nut ( H ')
securely. Recheck to see that end of manifold is still inside
bracket as shown in Figure 3 on page 17. Reinstall pilot
tubing and thermocouple into control. (See Figure 2,
page 17)
Step 8. Place screwdriver in slot "B'. (See Figure 1, page 17). De-
press and turn counter-clockwise (_'-"_ to stop. Con-
trol screw must be in "IN" position for propane (L.E) gas
and in "OUT" position for natural gas. STOP! Read label
"For Your Safety" located on your water heater.

Set the thermostat to lowest setting
by turning the water temperature
dial clockwise, (/_-'_) to its lowest
temperature setting (with arrow on
dial) as shown. DO NOT FORCE.
Turn gas control knob clockwise posi-
tion. Knob cannot be turned from "PILOT" to "OFF"
unless knob is depressed slightly. DO NOT FORCE•
Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas. If you then
smell gas, STOP! Follow "B" in the safety information
on "For Your Safety" label, lfyou don't smell gas, go to
the next step.
Find pilot-follow metal tube from gas control. The pilot
is located in front of the burner. (See Figure 4, page 17)
PILOT BURNER _ THERMOCOUPLE
If you don't smell gas, turn knob on gas control
counter-clockwise ,__ to "PILOT" position.
Push in control knob all the way and hold down. Imme-
diately light thepilot with a match• Continue to hold
control knob in for about one (1) minute after the pilot
is lit. Release knob and it will pop back up. Pilot should
remain lit. If it goes out, repeat steps 9 through 12.
• If knob does not pop up when released, stop and
immediately call the Sears Service Center or gas
supplier.
• If the pilot will not stay lit after several tries, depress
and turn the gas control knob clock-
wise _i_ to uFF ant1 call the Sears Service Cen-
ter or gas supplier.
Check for gas leaks with only pilot flame burning using
a soapy water solution, not a match or open flame.
Check for gas leaks at fittings "F"and G (See Figure 4,
page 17) and at fitting "J" (See Figure 2, page 17).
Make sure temperature adjustment dial is turned clock-
wise (f-_) in its lowest position (See Figure 1,
page 17).
Replace inner and outer doors.
At arms length away turn gas control knob to the hill
"ON" position. WARNING: Do not use gas control
knob to regulate gas flow. Turn temperature adjust-
ment dial counter-clockwise (_'--"9 until gas flows to
main burner and ignites.
With a soapy water solution, not a match or.open
flame, check for gas leaks at gas connection H . (See
Figure 2, page 17). If gas leak occurs, turn offimmedi-
ately by shutting off gas cock at inlet to
contr, ol,or by turning gas control knob l,a_ to "PI-
LOT pushing down and turning to OFF . Repair gas
leak as necessary, and repeat steps 9 through 19.

Step 20. At arm's length away, set the thermostat to desired set-
ting. The mark (V) HOT indicative of approx. 120°F is
preferred starting point. If hotter water is desired see the
"Temperature Regulation" section in this manual.

BEFORE LIGHTING THE PILOT:
• Check the gas lines for leaks.
a. Use a soapy water solution. DO NOT test for gas leaks
usinga match or open flame.
b. Brush the soapy water solution on all gas pipes, joints and
fittings.
c. Check for bubbling soap. This means you have aleak.
Turn "OFF" gas and make the necessary repairs.
