Safety precautions
AWARNING|
Take the following precautions to
prevent fire and avoid personal injury :
e Press in the faceplate until it Is firmly
locked to the main unit to prevent it
from being detached in an accident.
2 When extending the power supply
cable, memory backup cable, or ground
cable, use 0.75mm? (AWG18) or larger
automotive grade cable to avoid cable
deterioration or damage to the covering.
Check that no metal objects (coins,
tools, etc.) are left inside the unit to
avoid short circuits. ?
If you smell or see smoke, turn the
power off immediately and consuit your
Kenwood dealer.

Be sure the unit is connected to a 12V
DC power supply with a negative ground
connection.
Do not open the top or bottom cover.
Do not install the unit in places It is
exposed to direct sunlight, high heat or
humidity, water may splash over it, or
dust exists.
Do not store the detached faceplate or
aceplate storage case in places it Is ~
exposed to direct sunlight or high heat.
Do not splash water on the faceplate.
The faceplate is a precision piece of
equipment that contains sensitive parts.
Do not subject it to excessive shock.
Do not touch the terminals of the
faceplate or the unit.
f you need to replace the fuse, make
sure the new fuse is of the same type
and rating. Usinga fuse of a different
type of rating may damage your unit.
The fuse rating isnormaliy shown on the
fuse and fuse box.
® If you have difficulty in installing this unit
in your vehicle, contact your Kenwood
dealer.
® If it doesn’t seem to be working
properly, first press the Reset button. If
the malfunction persists, consult your
Kenwood dealer,
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
This unit is NOT designed to be
connected directly to a CD changer that
was manufactured and sold before
1994. If you plan to use such units,
please read the following information |
carefully.
® To control KDC-C200 / KDC-C300 / KDC-C400
A CA-DS100 (sold separately as an
optional accessory), along with the
control box and extension cord supplied
with the CD changer, are required.
e To control KDC-C301 / KDC-C600 / KDC-C800 /
KDC-C601 / KDC-C401
A CA-DS100 (sold separately as an
optional accessory), along with the
extension cord supplied with the CD
changer, are required.
® KDC-C100 / KDC-C302 / C205 / C705 and CD
changer Manufactured by Other Companies
are not compatible with this Kenwood
model.

Before use
Care and Maintenance
Cleaning the unit
¢ If the front panel is dirty, wipe it clean
with a silicon cloth or soft dry cloth with
the power off.
ACAUTION
Do not use hard cloths or paint thinner,
alcohol, or other volatile solvents. These
may damage external surfaces or
remove indicator characters.
Cleaning the faceplate terminal
e If the faceplate terminal or mount
faceplate terminal becomes dirty, wipe it
clean with a soft dry cloth.
Cleaning the tape head
* As you play tapes for a long time,
magnetic dust and other grime
accumulates around the heads and
eventually causes noise that lowers
sound quality. To clean the heads, use a
cleaning tape or cleaning kit. Make sure
you purchase a cleaning tape or cleaning
kit Suited to car audio use.

Be careful with your tapes.
Before loading a cassette, take up any
slack tape, by turning one of the spools
with a pencil. Loading a slack tape can
cause tape to tangle around the capstan
and pinch roller and other problems.
Do not use any deformed cassettes or
cassettes with labels coming off, or the
unit may fail.
Do not leave cassettes exposed to high
heat (for example, on the dashboard
where it is exposed to direct sunlight, or
near heater outlets). This can deform
the cassette shell.
Avoid long cassettes, such as 120-
minute tapes. The tape is thin and
easily tangled around the pinch roller or
other parts.

Auto seek tuning (Page 11)
Automatically searches for stations you
can receive.
Local seek (Page 13)
When this feature is turned on, the
tuner scans only the stations offering
good reception during Auto seek tuning
and Auto memory entry.
Mono reception (Page 13)
When stereo reception conditions are
poor, turning on this function switches
reception to mono, improving sound
quality by reducing noise.
Station preset memory (Page 16)
Stores the frequencies of your favourite
Stations in memory. The frequencies
stored in memory can be recalled by a
single touch of a button.
Auto memory entry (Page 17)
Automatically stores the stations in the
band you are listening to in memory.
You can tune to the stations stored in
memory by a single touch of a butten in
the same way as for the Stations preset
memory function. lf you use this
function when you drive a long way and
do not know what stations are available
there, you can check the programmes
broadcast by local stations by recalling
them by a single touch of a button.

When this feature is turned on, your
tuner automatically narrows the
frequency band it receives to prevent
interference from stations broadcasting
on frequencies close to the one you are
listening to.

Before use
Features
RDS section
RDS is a digital information system that
transmits radio programme and station
network information.
When the tuner receives an RDS station,
the frequency and then the station
name is displayed so that you see the
programme easily.
The RDS stations transmit frequency
data of the same national network
stations. You can set your tuner to
automatically switch to a station with
stronger signals in the same national
network stations. Since this data for
preset RDS stations is stored
automatically, you can switch to
another station offering the same
programme more quickly by presetting
your favourite RDS station.
« AF (Alternative Frequency) (Page 19)
When this feature is turned on, the
tuner searches for RDS stations only
during Auto seek tuning. If the signal
conditions become poor, the tuner
automatically switches to the station
with good reception in the same national
network.
- LNSS (Local Network Search System)
(Page 20)
You may not find a national network
station offering good reception even if
the RDS function has been turned on.
When this feature is turned on, LNSS
will search for a national network
station, including a local station offering
the same programme.

Traffic information (Page 21)
When you turn on this function, your
uner automatically picks up signals only
rom traffic information stations during
Auto seek tuning. When traffic
information broadcasting starts, the
volume is automatically set to the preset
evel because you can preset the
volume level. If it detects a traffic
information signal while you are playing
a cassette or CD, it automatically
switches to the traffic information
broadcast.
EON (Enhanced Other Network)
(Page 21)
Stations in the RDS EON system carry
information about other stations which
broadcast traffic news. If you are tuned
to an EON station, your receiver can
retune automatically to a local station to
receive a traffic bulletin.
Programme type (Page 24)
This feature enables your tuner to
perform Auto seek tuning to the type of
programme you wish to hear.
Programme types can be displayed in
either English, French, or German.
Clock setting by RDS station (Page
27)
Some RDS stations broadcast time
signals that let the built-in clock in the
unit set itself to the correct local time.
Alarm
When an emergency broadcast from a
station is received, all of the current
functions are interrupted and the unit is
switched to the emergency broadcast
reception, :

Cassette player section
: Tape type selection (Page 15)
The Tape type selection function allows
you to play normal tapes and metal
(chrome) tapes.
DPSS (Direct Program Search
System) (Page 28)
This function lets you select tracks up to
nine positions before or after the one
you are playing.
Index scan (Page 29)
When this function is turned on, the first
part of each track on the tape is played
in succession. This function is useful to
search for the track you want to listen
to.
Music repeat (Page 30)
When this function is turned on, the
player plays the track you are listening to
repeatedly.
Blank skip (Page 31)
When this feature is turned on, the
player automatically fast forwards to the
next track if it detects a long blank
section.
Tuner call (Page 32)
When this function is turned on, you can
listen to the radio while rewinding or
fast forwarding a cassette.
ICD changer control section
CD auto-changer control (Page 33)
This unit has a CD auto-changer control
function.
Track / Disc search (Page 34)
You can search for the track / disc you
want by specifying the track / disc
number.

When this function is turned on, the
track you are listening to is played
repeatedly.
Disc repeat (Page 35)
When this function is turned on, the disc
you are listening to is played repeatedly.
Track scan (Page 36)
When this function is turned on, the first
part of each track on the disc you are
listening to is played automatically to
help you find the one you want.
Disc scan (Page 37)
When this function is turned on, the first
part of each disc in the CD auto-changer
is played automatically to help you find
the one you want from the magazine
loaded in the CD auto-changer.
Random play (Page 38)
When this function is turned on, the
tracks on the disc you are listening to
are played in random order.
Magazine random play (Page 39)
When this function is turned on, the
tracks on the discs in your CD auto-
changer are played in random order.

This function allows you to lower the
volume quickly. The fade-in function is
provided to restore the original volume
gradually.
Loudness control (Page 10)
When this function is turned on when
the volume level is low, sound is made
clear by emphasizing bass and treble.
Audio controls (Page 40)
Adjust the bass, treble, balance, and
fader.
Selectable iliumination (Page 42)
Allows illumination colour to be
switched between green and orange.
Selectable display type (Page 42)
Allows the display type to change
between negative and positive.
Theft deterrent faceplate (Page 43)
The faceplate is detachable. When you
leave the vehicle, you can take the
faceplate with you to help prevent theft.
Disabled system indicator (Page 44)
When the faceplate is detached from
the unit, the LED blinks.

When the TEL mute cable is connected
to the car telephone, and a call come in,
the functions of this unit are interrupted.
When you hang up, the unit returns to
the original mode automatically.
