Kenwood TM-D700A Technical manual

Kenwood FM Dual Band TM-D700A
Operation Instruction
The knob on the lower left of the radio when turned it selects:
• Operating frequencies when in VFO mode, 2
nd
button down on left.
• Memory channels when in Memory Recall mode, 3
rd
button down on left.
• Menu Nos. when in Menu mode, 2rd button down on right.
When turning the lower left hand knob in Memory Recall Mode, take note of the radio's
memory channel on VFO B. It has been changed to channel 13, WTC-MID. This is the
West Texas Connection Midland frequency on VFO B
Again when turning the lower left hand knob in Memory Recall Mode, take note that the
radio's memory channel on VFO A. It has been changed to channel 15, the PACKET
frequency on VFO A.
Don’t get confused by the PACKET label above the frequency of VFO A , it is just a label
for the channel that you have selected, this doesn’t indicate that the TNC has been
initiated and that you are in packet mode
To initiate the TNC:
Open the WinPack terminal program on the computer.
On the TM-D700A, press the “F” button on the bottom left of the screen for about two
seconds (you will hear two beeps). Be sure you hear it beep twice
On the lower left side of the screen you will see “TNC”. Press that button.
That procedure probably puts the radio in “TNC APRS” mode, note the display in the
upper left.
For that reason you will need to press the “F” button on the bottom left of the screen
again for about two seconds (you will hear two beeps).
On the lower left side of the screen you will see “TNC”. Press that button again.
At this point, the TNC should be successfully initialized, note the display in the upper
left hand corner that reads “TNC PKT” and in the upper right hand corner of the display
reads “1200”. The WinPack computer screen should show:
TASCO Radio Modem
AX.25 Level 2 Version 2.0
Release 03/Dec/99 3Chip ver 1.08
Checksum $04
cmd:
When the TNC is initialized then all packet traffic is automatically transmitted on VFO-A.
For that reason, you do not need “PTT” on VFO-A, leave it on VFO-B. Since packet is
automatic, you may also leave the volume turned down on VFO-A, just make sure that the
squelch is tight enough not to allow white-noise or the Packet will not transmit.
WHEN CONVERSING VIA PACKET, ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT VFO-A IS TUNED TO
THE CHANNEL WITH THE FREQUENCY OF 145.010 (which is the common packet
frequency). If you are on any other frequency on VFO-A, you will be transmitting data on
regular voice repeaters, which will disrupt voice traffic.)
The radio is very versatile as it employs a fluid command system, as follows:
1.Recalls the Call channel
2.Selects the VFO mode. In this mode you can change the operating frequency
3.Selects the Memory Recall mode. In this mode you can change memory channels
4.When turned, selects:
• Operating frequencies when in VFO mode
• Memory channels when in Memory Recall mode
• Menu Nos. when in Menu mode
This control is used for various other selections
5. When pressed, selects the MHz mode. In this mode you can change the operating
frequency in 1 MHz steps or 10 MHz steps
6. Allows you to select the different functions that are available using the
multifunction buttons
7. Activates the Tone , CTCSS , or DCS function
8. Switches the transmit frequency and receive frequency when operating with an offset or an
odd-split memory channel .
9. Selects High, Medium, or Low transmit output power.
10. Mutes the speaker allocated to the control band.
11. Selects the band that you can control using the front panel buttons or the microphone keys
12. When turned, adjusts the level of receive audio from the speaker Turn the left control (VFO A)
or the right control (VFO B) depending on which band you want to operate. When pressed,
these buttons select the desired TX VFO.
13. When turned, adjusts the squelch level of the selected VFO.
14. Selects the Menu mode.
15. Selects the Programmable Memory (PM) mode.
16. Switches the transceiver ON or OFF
