Knox eKey is an electronic key used to access and collect audit
trails from products equipped with Knox eLocks.
This guide provides a brief overview for Knox Device
Administrators for setting up, programming, charging, and using
the Knox eKey.
Proper charging of the Knox eKey is required for best
performance and battery life. Each eKey must charge a
minimum of 8 hours every six months. Charging is recorded in
KnoxConnect. Battery failures during the warranty period are
covered for eKeys charged to this standard.
CHARGING AND PROGRAMMING USING A
KNOXDOCK OR KEYDEFENDER HOLSTER
1. Charge Knox eKey by using the provided USB cable to connect the
KnoxDock or holster to a computer).
2. Insert the Knox eKey into the cradle or holster so the charging pads on
the key’s back align with the device’s charging pins.
3. Charge Knox eKey for eight (8) hours before initial use.
•The Knox eKey will flash green to solid red to show it is charging.
When fully charged, only the solid red LED will be on. A solid red LED
shows the eKey requires activation for use.
4. To program the Knox eKey, with the eKey in a KnoxDock or holster
connected to a PC as described in Steps 1 and 2, log into and run the
KnoxDcok PC software. Any pending firmware, configuration, and PIN
updates will automatically be pushed to the eKey.

OR KEYDEFENDER
1. Ensure KeySecure or KeyDefender is powered and online. Follow steps in
the Knox Neworking Guide using Knox Device Sync to update settings and
network templates. The key control unit must remained powered for the steps
below.
2. Charge the Knox eKey by inserting it into KeySecure® 6 or KeyDefender and
ensure the latch is closed and locked (flashing amber LED lights are OFF).
3. Charge Knox eKey for up to eight (8) hours before initial use.
•The Knox eKey will flash green to solid red while charging. When fully
charged, the light will turn to solid red.
4. To program Knox eKey, update settings and lock codes in KnoxConnect. Insert
the eKey into a key control device. Ensure the key control device is online
5. Knox eKey will automatically be programmed after KnoxConnect syncs.
Before initial use, the Knox eKey and key control devices must be
configured and user PINS (408 digits) must be assigned to the
devices. These functions are performed in KnoxConnect.
KnoxDock and Knox Holsters are used with the KnoxDock PC app.
KeySecure and KeyDefenders are updated using Knox Device Sync.

SETTINGS & OPTIONS
COMMAND CODES
Knox eKey functions are accessed using command codes. There are two (2) regular command code levels
available and one special use code:
•Command Code Level 1: Open lock and/or retrieve lock audit trail.
•Command Code Level 2: Retrieve lock’s full audit trail, change lock code, and/or replace lock’s firmware.
•Command Code Level 3: Used to conduct equipment Transfers - see the Transfers Quick Start Guide for details.
PROGRAMMING EXPIRATION TIMER
For security, Knox eKeys can be set to “expire” after a period from two (2) minutes up to a maximum of seven (7)
days when removed from a key control device. Upon expiration, the eKey becomes inoperable until it is returned
to a key control unit.
•Within one minute of expiring, the LED lights on the eKey flash red.
•When the timer expires, the LED lights turn solid red.
To reset the timer, return the eKey to a KnoxDock, KeySecure 6 or KeyDefender.
•KnoxDock or Holster: Insert eKey into the device. With the device connected to the PC, launch the KnoxDock
PC App, Select Release Knox eKey from selection pane. Enter a valid PIN code into the app keypad. Remove the
ekey after the “Success” message shows in the app.
•KeySecure 6 or KeyDefender: Insert the eKey into the device and lock into place (while powered): Enter your
assigned PIN into the key control unit keypad and release the eKey.
The eKey is now reset and ready for use.
UNLOCKING & LOCKING KNOX ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS
1. Using the Knox eKey, enter a valid command code 1. The LED will flash green then
solid light blue.
Four (4) red flashes mean an incorrect command code was entered.
2. While LED is light blue, insert the eKey into the Knox eLock Core™ (“eLock”).
The LED will change to solid green if the key is authorized to use the eLock.
NOTE: Turning the eKey before the solid green LED appears may bind the Knox eLock,
preventing opening.
3. To UNLOCK, turn Knox eKey counter-clockwise
NOTE: Knox Elevator Box and Electronic Document Cabinet (single lock) turn clockwise to open.
4. To LOCK, close the door, and turn the Knox eKey clockwise.
NOTE: Electronic Knox Elevator Box and Electronic Document Cabinet (single lock) turn clockwise to open.
5. Remove Knox eKey from eLock and return to a key control device.
COLLECTING AUDIT TRAILS FROM KNOX ELOCK CORE
The Knox eKey is programmed to retrieve audit trails, Enter Command Code 1 (for a partial audit trail) or
command code 2 (for a complete audit trail).
•After the LED lights flash green four (4) times and then changes to blue, insert the Knox eKey into
Knox eLock Core.
•Hold the eKey in place until the LED flashes green four (4) times. If the LEDs flash red four (4) times, the eKey
was unable to retrieve the lock audit trail. Repeat the process to retry.
•After a successful retrieval of the eLock audit trail, remove the Knox eKey from the Knox eLock Core and return
it to the KeySecure or KnoxDock.
