Koch Pedaltone User manual

Congratulations on your purchase of this unique preamp. The Pedaltone was designed
for those who need a wide palet of tube sounds at the tip of their toes both for performing
as for recording purposes. This is a handcrafted unit, it's road-proof and built by people
who care about guitar tone and quality.
Thank you for choosing Koch. Please take the time to read this manual carefully and to
send in your warranty card.
[1] VOLUME : Controls the volume level of the Clean channel (CH1).
[2] BASS & TREBLE : Classic passive tone controls that regulate low and high frequencies of the
Clean channel (CH1).
[3] GAIN : Controls the amount of distortion in the Overdrive channel (CH2).
[4] VOLUME : Controls the volume level of the Overdrive channel (CH2).
[5] BASS, MID & TREBLE : Classic post-distortion passive tone controls that regulate low, mid and
high frequencies of the Overdrive channel (CH2).
[6] RHYTHM VOLUME : If this control is activated (see [12] Solo/Rhythm), it functions as a master
volume and can be used to preset a (lower) Rhythm volume.
[7] DRIVE : Controls the amount of (power amp) distortion of the 0.5W power amp.
[8] VOLUME : Controls the volume level of the 0.5W power amp.
[9] CH1/CH2 : Selects between the Clean channel (CH1) and the Overdrive channel (CH2). If the red
LED is off, CH1 is active. If it burns, CH2 is active.
[10] CH2-BOOST : Selects between low-gain mode and high-gain mode on the Overdrive channel
(CH2). The red LED burns when the high-gain mode is active.
CH1-ENHANCE : Activates an enhancer on the Clean channel (CH1), if switch [17] is in the upper
position. The red LED burns when the enhancer is active. An enhancer is a filter that cuts the mids
and boosts the high-end. Sounds great for rhythm and open ch ords.
NOTE: HIGH-GAIN settings may cause squealing and/or excessive hum and noise, due to
microphonic guitar pick-ups and insufficient screening of guitar-circuitry.
[11] POWER AMP : Activates a single-ended 0.5W tube power amp. With this unique feature real
tube power amp distortion can be created. Combines very well with both CH1 and CH2. Gives a nice
and musical saturation of clean tones on CH1, and fattens up all crunchy or high-gain distortion
tones on CH2.
[12] SOLO/RHYTHM : Bypasses the RhythmVolume [6] and functions therefore as a Solo/Rhythm
selector. If the Rhythm Volume is bypassed the signal is sent straight into the output section (and the
Rhythm Volume doesn’t function any more). The red LED burns when the Solo mode is active.
[13] TO POWER AMP : for connecting the Pedaltone to a separate (19") power amp.
[14] TO FX RETURN : for connecting the Pedaltone to the effects return jack of a guitar amp.
[15] HEADPHONES OUTPUT : provided for the connection of a set of headphones. The signal is
filtered in order to simulate the sound of a guitar speaker or speaker cabinet.
[16] REC/PA : this jack allows sending an unbalanced, filtered, signal to a Recording or PA mixing
console. A speaker simulating filter simulates the recording characteristic of a microphone placed in
front of a guitar speaker cabinet.
[17] CHANNEL-1 ENHANCE MODE ON/OFF : determines if switch [10] can also activate an
Enhancer on the Clean channel (CH-1)
[18] GUITAR INPUT : Input for an electric guitar.
[19] TO CLEAN INPUT : for connecting the Pedaltone to the input jack of a guitar amp. If this amp
has a channel selector it must be switched to the Clean channel.
[20] EFFECTS LOOP SEND (TO FX) : This jack provides a buffered mono output from the preamp
and can be used in conjunction with the RETURN (FROM FX) jack as a patch point for external
effects units.
[21] EFFECTS LOOP RETURN (FROM FX) : This jack inputs signal directly to the output section
and automatically disconnects the preamp section.
NOTE: The EFFECTS LOOP’s mode is serial. Its -10dBV SIGNAL LEVEL guarantees compatibility
with both instrument-level effects like floor-pedals and guitar-processors, as well as line-level effects
like professional 19 inch rack mount devices.
[22] POWER SUPPLY : Input for the 12VAC mains adapter.
[23] REPLACING TUBES : this cap can be removed, using the two large black bolts at each side, for
replacement of the four 12AX7 tubes. The second tube (seen from the Guitar Input jack side) should
always be replaced with a special low microphonic type. (Koch 12AX7LM/7025).
