Conceptdescription
TheK-Syncsynchronizationsystemoffersahighlyadjustabletimingoftransmissions
("pinging")whenmultipleechosounders,sonarsorotherhydroacousticinstruments
areemployedonavessel.
TheK-Syncsynchronizationsystemcontrolsandoptimizesthetimingforeach
transmissionfromeachhydroacousticsystem.Thistimingensuresthatsystemsthatmay
interferewitheachotherdonottransmitsimultaneously,asthiscouldresultinacoustic
interferenceanddegradeddata.
TheK-Syncprovidesexiblecontrolofthetransmitscheduling.Thetriggerschedule
canbetailoredtotheparticulartypeofsurveyyouareabouttoperform.Anyecho
sounder,sonarorotherhydroacousticsystemthathasaninputforexternaltransmit
triggeringcanbecontrolled.
TheK-Syncschedulesthehydroacousticsystemstotransmitaccordingtotriggergroups.
Thereisatotalof16triggergroups.Anynumberofhydroacousticsystems(ornone)can
beassignedtoagroup.Eachgroupistriggeredonebyone,whilethesystemsassigned
toagrouparetriggeredsimultaneously.Onceitisdetermined(byreadingfeedback
signals)orestimated(basedoninputdepthand/oryourparametersettings)thatallthe
hydroacousticsystemsinthecurrentgrouphavecompletedtheirtransmissioncycle,
thenextgroupistriggered.Allgroupsaretriggeredinacircularorder.Theduration
allocatedtoeachgroupisnotxedanddependsonthemaximumactiveperioddened
forthehydroacousticsystemsinthatgroup.
Systemscanbetakenoutoftheschedulewithoutchangingthegroupschedule.Thisis
donebysimplydisablingthem.Ifagroupdoesnotcontainanyavailablehydroacoustic
systems,thatgroupisskipped.
Ifthe"readytotransmit"feedbacksignalisavailablefromaspecichydroacoustic
system,thedurationoftheactiveperiodallocatedtothegroupissettothetimeittakes
forthesignaltobecomeactiveafterthehydroacousticsystemhasbeentriggered.
Ifthetransmittingfeedbacksignalisavailable,theK-Syncwillautomaticallycheckthat
atransmitoccurredaftereachtrigger.Ifthehydroacousticsystemfailstotransmitthree
timesinarow,itisassumedthatithasbeenturnedoff.Itisthentakenoutoftheschedule.
FeedbacksignalsareignoredwhenCalculatedandFixedPeriodareusedinruntime
settings.

Networksecurity
IfaK-Syncsystemisconnectedtoalocalareanetwork,datasecurityisimportant.
EquipmentmanufacturedbyKongsbergMaritimeisfrequentlyconnectedtothevessel's
localareanetwork(LAN).Whenyouconnectacomputertoalocalareanetworkyou
willalwaysexposethedataonthatcomputer.Allothercomputersconnectedtothesame
networkmaybeabletoaccessyourdata.Severalthreatsmayimmediatelyoccur:
•Remotecomputerscanreadthedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethebehaviorofthecomputer,forexamplebyinstalling
unwantedsoftware.
Usually,twoparametersareusedtodenethethreatlevel:

KongsbergMaritimehasnoinformationregardingthecompletesysteminstallationon
anyvessel.SystemsprovidedbyKongsbergMaritimeareregardedasstand-aloneofine
systems.Theyarestand-aloneeventhoughtheymaybeconnectedtoanetworkfor
sensorinterfacesand/ordatadistribution.
Note
NonetworksafetyapplicationsareinstalledonKongsbergMaritimecomputers.The
computersarethereforenotprotectedagainstviruses,malwareorunintentionalaccess
byexternalusers.
SecuringtheK-Syncsystemitselfhasnomeaningunlessthereisapolicyinplacethat
securesallcomputersinthenetwork.Thispolicymustincludephysicalaccessby
trainedandtrustedusers.Thecustomer/enduseroftheK-Syncsystemwillalwaysbe
inchargeofdeningandimplementingasecurity,policyandprovidingtherelevant
networksecurityapplications.
Note
KongsbergMaritimewillnotacceptanyresponsibilityforerrorsand/ordamagescaused
byunauthorizeduseoforaccesstotheK-Syncsystem.
IfyouwishtoconnecttheK-Syncsystemtotheship'slocalareanetwork,youmust
implementthesamesecuritymechanismsontheK-Synccomputer(s)asfortherestof
thenetwork.Thisisataskforthenetworkresponsiblepersononboard.Somekey
elementsheremustbe:
•Thesameanti-virusprotectiononallcomputers,includingroutinesforupdating

•Thesamesettingsfortherewallonallcomputers.
•Controlledphysicalaccesstocomputersonthenetwork.
•Trustedandtrainedoperators.
•Log-inaccessmechanisms.
•Samepolicyforattachingperipheralequipmenttothecomputers(USBdevices,
harddrivesetc).
•Installationofprogramsonanycomputerinthenetwork,vericationthateach
programisauthentic.
•Denitionofwhichprogramsareallowedtorunoneachcomputer.
•Loggingmechanismofcomputeractivity,andinspectionoftheselogs.
Howtodeneandimplementtheserulesdependsoneachenduser'snetworksystem
conguration,whichagainmustbearesultofthepoliciesandthreatlevelstheenduser
hasdenedforthecompleteinstallation.Forsomeproductsthenetworkconsistsofonly
processorunitsand/orworkstations,transceiversandafewsensors.Onothervessels,
largercomputersystemscanbeinstalledtoincludenumerousproductsanddatasystems.

beequippedwithastandardsetoftools.Thistoolsetmustcomprisethenormaltoolsfor
electronicandelectromechanicaltasks.Thisincludesdifferentscrewdrivertypes,pliers,
spanners,acablestripper,asolderingiron,etc.Eachtoolmustbeprovidedinvarious

TheK-SyncUnitisdesignedtobemountedina19-inchrack.
Prerequisites
Youmustbeequippedwithastandardsetoftools.Thistoolsetmustcomprisethe
normaltoolsforelectronicandelectromechanicaltasks.Thisincludesdifferent
screwdrivertypes,pliers,spanners,acablestripper,asolderingiron,etc.Eachtoolmust
beprovidedinvarioussizes.Werecommendthatalltoolsaredemagnetizedtoprotect
yourequipment.Dependingonthetasksathand,additionaltoolsmayberequired.
