Installation Notes Kraken FP1 advanced Loudspeaker
Overview –FP1 –Carbon Fibre advanced loudspeaker
FP1 is a modal soundboard designed to accurately reproduce audio frequencies above 200 Hz with
minimal distortion and exceptional musical clarity. It is NOT intended to be a full-range loudspeaker. The
‘Active 3’ crossover has been designed specifically to complement the FP1 and the Kraken BB80 micro-bass
which should be utilised on all installations where possible (see ‘Active 3’and ‘BB80’ installation notes).
Where the ‘Active 3’is not used some other means of limiting the low frequencies fed to the FP1 must be
provided. The FP1 is not designed to reproduce frequencies below 200Hz. Any attempt to make it do so
will damage it beyond repair and invalidate the warranty. The use of the Kraken Active 3 / BB80 is essential
to produce a full frequency range
Installation Kit
Along with the FP1 a comprehensive installation
kit is provided (see below). Please check it
contains all the items required for any specific
installation.
2 x Mounting bracket
2 x Mounting bracket extension
8x Mounting screw (4 for wood / 4 for masonry)
4 x Wall plugs
1 x allen key for fixing / adjusting bracket
Specifications
Impedance: 8 ohms
Power handling: 25 W RMS
Frequency response: 180 –17500 Hz
SPL: 86 dB at 1W/1m at 1KHz
Length: 300 mm
Width : 200 mm
Depth : 30 mm
Weight: 0.5 Kg
Loudspeaker is magnetically shielded
If installing FP1 in arrays to raise SPL, remember to series–parallel connections to maintain impedance:
2 x FP1 in series = 16Ω at (25W x 2) 50W RMS. 2 x FP1 in parallel = 4Ω at (25W x 2) 50W RMS
4 x FP1 in series-parallel = 8Ωat (25W x 4) 100W RMS.
DO NOT EXCEED THE RMS POWER RATING OF ANY LOUDSPEAKER OR CONNECT THEM TO A FULL RANGE
OUTPUT UNLESS A HIGH-PASS FILTER AT 180 / 200 Hz is FITTED OTHERWISE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR
WHICH IS NOT COVERED BY OUR WARRANTY
Location & Mounting
FP1 loudspeakers are designed to be wall, ceiling or stand mounted. Where stands are required, we
recommend B-Tech StealthTM as the slim design complements the FP1 very effectively. As the loudspeaker
is a vibrating structure, the (supplied) brackets must be securely fixed to a rigid surface otherwise acoustic
vibrations (i.e. rattles and buzzes) may occur. The rear of the loudspeaker produces as much sound energy
as the front, but unlike a conventional loudspeaker this energy is in phase (i.e. additive) and is utilised to
achieve maximum SPL (sound pressure level). The speaker must be installed in such a way as to ensure a
space of at least 70mm, from the surface to which it is fitted, is maintained.
The FP1 will not operate properly if either embedded into a wall or mounted directly (i.e. without the
bracket) on a structure. (see fig 1. below)
Fig 1
When using floor stands, positioning is less critical and the loudspeakers should be positioned to ensure a
good sound stage, similar to a conventional loudspeaker installation.
Where a bass speaker such as the BB80 is used it can be positioned almost anywhere in the room, but for
accurate stereo imaging, a position between the FP1 speakers usually gives the best result. (See fig 2.
below)
Fig 2 HiFi installation –optimum stereo imaging
As the FP1 is a low impedance speaker the rating and length of cable used needs to be considered due to
the current needed to produce the SPL that may be required. We recommend that a cable with a core size
of 1.0mm2cable be used. It is of course vital that the load impedance together with power ratings are
correct for the loudspeakers and amplifiers employed and the speakers are connected in phase.
Installation Notes Kraken BB80 micro-bass
Overview –BB80
BB80 is a small bass speaker designed to accurately reproduce frequencies below 200 Hz with minimal
vibration and a smooth roll-off at the lowest frequencies. It is NOT a sub bass in the accepted sense. The
‘Active 3’ crossover amplifier has been designed specifically to complement the BB80 and should be
utilised on all installations where possible (see ‘Active 3’ installation notes). Where the ‘Active 3’ is not
used some other means of limiting the frequencies fed to the BB80 must be included.
Installation Kit
Along with the BB80 a comprehensive installation kit is provided (see below). Please check it contains all
the items required for any specific installation.
1 x Mounting bracket
2 x M6 Nut and spring washer
2 x Mounting bolt
2 x Wall plugs
1 x Safety bond (attached to BB80)
Location & Mounting
A single BB80 will cover around 50 square metres. As a general rule the location within any space is not
critical as human hearing does not perceive directional information at lower frequencies. In addition to the
2 keyhole slots the bracket can be mounted on a BS5733 square socket box. As the type and quality of
these boxes is variable, the use of the key slots in addition is recommended. In all installations the safety
bond must be utilised. Use an approved fixing (not Supplied). Where multiple units are to be installed
these can either be distributed around the area to be covered or arrayed using the spacing below. Care
should be taken to ensure the correct impedance matching. The characteristic impedance of the BB80 is 4
ohms.
Wiring
As the BB80 is a low impedance speaker the size and length of cable used needs to be considered. We
recommend that 1.5mm2cable be used to minimise losses. Correct phasing and power ratings need to be
observed in all installations.
Specification

Installation Notes Kraken Active 3
crossover - amplifier
Overview –Active 3
Unique design mixer active crossover amplifier with a crossover frequency of 200 Hz.
2 mixable inputs configurable as either stereo or dual mono. 4 line level outputs: L and R above 200 Hz,
summed mono above 200 Hz, summed mono below 200 Hz.
50W RMS speaker output below 200 Hz.
Whilst the Active 3 crossover amplifier has been designed specifically to complement the BB80 micro-bass,
the versatile input / output structure enables seamless integration with new or existing sound installations.
Installation kit
1 x Active 3 crossover amplifier
1 x Separate auto-sensing 110 –240v power supply
Location and Mounting
The Active 3 can be located in any convenient position. Adequate ventilation should be provided around
the heat sink. Comprehensive short circuit and temperature protection is designed into the unit.
Wiring
As all low level inputs and outputs are unbalanced the active 3 should be located close to the other
installed amplifiers and sources. All low level cables must be screened. Phoenix type plug-in connectors are
used throughout to simplify installation.
Setting up
All inputs and outputs have individual gain / level controls. The input / output structure can be adjusted to
suit any specific equipment or installation.
If using the Kraken loudspeaker Interface module for FP1 / HiFi installations, please ensure the input gains
are turned fully anti-clockwise before connection. Set the LF gain to about 50%.
Set the HiFi to an acceptable listening level then adjust the input gains to a level where the bass output
sounds right for the music listened to. Fine tuning can then be achieved with the LF gain control.
Do not adjust further. Overall level will now be controlled by the HiFi master volume control.
