Where to Insert the CFT-5
The CFT-5 will give consistent measurements of containment force on pallet/loads wrapped in stretch lm. These instructions
show the user how to use this tool. Photo 1 below identies the specic parts that make up the CFT-5.

1. Press the “on” button on the scale until the display starts to
blink. Set to lbs. and oz.* Let go of the button and the scale
will go through its calibration. (Make sure there is no load
on the scale during the calibration process otherwise false
reading will occur.)
2. Take the free end of the measuring chain in your right hand
and place it at the right corner of the load about 2” from
the top of the load as shown in Photo -3. Stretch the chain
out parallel to the top to position the piercing nger where it
should be inserted: 22” from the right side of the load and
about 2” from the top of the load as shown.
3. Insert the piercing nger (Photo - 4) at that point. Once the
piercing nger is inserted in the lm, you may let the
measuring chain go. Hold your right thumb underneath the
top plate for support. (See Photo - 5)
Note: This is so the lm does not “bunch” up between the
fulcrum nger and the piercing nger. Do not let the lm go
higher than weld underneath the top plate.

left index nger

When measuring containment force, always measure from the right side of the load as you face it. See Photo - 3.
When possible use the long side of the load. It’s okay to use the short if you have to but the long side is preferred. For example,
if you have a 40”x48” pallet, measure the 48” side. Each load should also be checked in 3 different vertical locations.
Use Photo - 2 as a reference.

Testing Procedure
* How to change the scale mode setting to lbs - oz
1. Press the “power on” button and the display will ash 88.8.8.
2. While the screen is ashing, press the “power on” button to cycle through the scale mode settings.
3. When the screen shows “lbs – oz” stop pressing the button and the screen will ash once to verify change.

4. Maintaining support with your right
thumb, take the scale in your left hand
and pull to the left keeping the scale
level and parallel to the load.
Important note: For proper results,
the tool must be vertical and the
scale must be level.
(See Photo - 6)
5. Pull the scale to the left as shown in
Photo - 6, so the tool rotates around
the fulcrum nger until the indicator
foot makes contact with or “kisses”
the lm, not the load.
(Refer to Photos 7 & 8)
6. When contact is made, note the
reading on the scale. Make sure the
reading has lbs. and oz. on the right
side of the digital readout.
7. Repeat the procedure for the middle, starting
from the right side at approx. half the height of
the load. (See Photo - 9)

8. Repeat the procedure for the bottom location, starting from the right side, but locate the vertical position by:
1. Laying the piercing nger against the load, pointed downward.
2. The bottom of the 10” piercing nger should extend 3/4” below the bottom of the lm (including lm rope or Pallet Grip
cable). (See Photo - 10)
3. Where the piercing nger intersects with the top plate, mark the position with your nger. Insert the piercing nger at
that mark. (See Photo - 10)
4. When inserted, the tool position should look like Photo - 11.
9. After all of the readings have been taken, push and hold the button on the scale for approx. 5 seconds until the unit turns off.
As in any test, consistency is important. Repeat the sequence the same way every time and you will get accurate data points.
