Lantronix UDS1100: Connection
and Device Programming Guide
Introduction
This document outlines the procedures for connecting the Lantronix UDS1100, a single-port serial-to-
Ethernet device server, to Adaptive LED displays. It also goes through the steps involved in basic setup
and programming.
Connecting RS485 Cable to the RS485 Serial Port
1. Figure 1 illustrates the pin connections and wire colors for the RS485 screw terminal block on the
Lantronix UDS1100 device. Strip 1⁄4 inch of the insulation from the wires and insert the wires into
their proper terminals. Do not over-tighten the screws. Only light pressure is necessary.

2. Connect the RS45(+) wire from the sign to TX+ connector on the Lantronix UDS1100 Device (see
inset on Figure 2).
3. Connect the RS45(-) wire from the sign to TX–connector on the Lantronix device.
4. Connect shield from the sign to GND connector on the Lantronix device.
5. Connect the port on the UDS1100 marked “10/100” to your network. See Figure 2.
6. Plug the included AC Power Adapter into a 120 Volt AC outlet. Connect the Power Adapter cable
to the UDS1100 port marked “9-30VDC” “9-24VAC”. See Figure 2.

Troubleshooting
Ping the Lantronix Device
1. Press the “Start” button located in the bottom
left corner of your screen. A popup window will
appear.
2. From the popup window, press the “Run” button.
The “Run” dialog box will appear (Figure 3).
Type “cmd” into the dialog box and press ”OK”.
3. A Windows dialog screen will appear (Figure 4).
Type in the following: “Ping
XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX” (the IP address of your
UDS1100 device).
4. The program will ping the Lantronix device four
times. You should see “0 % loss”, as shown in
Figure 4.

Testing the UDS-1100 Lantronix Device Using Hyper Terminal
1. Open HyperTerminal. HyperTerminal can be accessed from the
Start button via the following path: Start Programs
Accessories Communications Hyper Terminal.
2. A Connection Description window will open (Figure 5).
3. Enter any name and click “OK”.
4. A Connect To window will open (Figure 6). Connect Using “TCP/IP (Winsock)”.
5. For the Host Address, type in the IP address of the Lantronix Device (example:
192.168.151.89).
6. For the Port number,type in “3001”.
7. Click “OK”.
8. Make the loopback connections on the RS485 screw terminal connections located on the
UDS1100 Lantronix Device. With two short lengths of wire, connect the terminals TX+ to RX+
and TX- to RX-. See Figure 7.
9. Type on screen – characters should echo back to screen.
10. Exit HyperTerminal.

Programming the UDS1100
Installing the Lantronix DeviceInstaller Software
NOTE: These procedures are written for Lantronix DeviceInstaller Version 4.2.0.1 Software.
You can download Version 4.2.0.1 from the Lantronix website at
http://www.lantronix.com/ftp/DeviceInstaller/4.2.0.1/Di32DL_4.2.0.1_Web.exe
After you have installed DeviceInstaller Version 4.2.0.1, run the program by clicking on the “Start” button
and going to Programs Lantronix DeviceInstaller 4.2 DeviceInstaller. When the
DeviceInstaller program starts, it will look similar to Figure 8.
Setting the IP Address
NOTE: If you are connecting the Lantronix Device directly into your PC for program purposes,
you should use an Ethernet crossover cable.
1. Connect the Lantronix UDS1100 to your network. Connect the Power Adapter to an AC
outlet and to the Lantronix device.
2. Click on “Assign IP” to go to the “Device Identification” window. (Figure 9).
3. Enter the hardware address of the UDS1100. (Figure 9) The hardware address (MAC
Address) is typically printed on the back panel of the UDS1100, and is formatted like “12-
34-56-78-9A-BC.” Then click on “Next”.
4. At the next window (Figure 10), select “Assign a specific IP address” and click “Next”.
