Disclaimers, Warnings, and Precautions
Before using your Thermal Infrared Camera System, it is important that you read this user manual to make sure you know how to use
the device properly. After reading the manual, store it in a secure place for future reference.
Incorrect handling and installation of the thermal camera could possibly result in damage to the vehicle it is attached to or cause
personal injury or death. Speedir assumes no responsibility for any damage caused by misuse or conditions beyond the scope
described in this manual.
The thermal camera is not intended to be used as a vehicle’s primary navigation source. The device does not replace human vision
nor the use of headlights in any way. The device is designed as an early acoustic warning system to detect some pedestrians, animals,
and other conditions on the roadway; however, it may not detect all hazards. It is the chief responsibility of the driver to safely
operate the vehicle.
Export Restrictions
Thermal cameras are subject to export restrictions of the United States Government. It is the buyer’s responsibility to comply with the
export laws and regulations and acquire an export license if required.
Declaration of Responsibility
Larson Electronics prepared this manual to help users operate and understand its thermal camera products. We will continuously
work to ensure the accuracy of contents of this manual, but we cannot ensure the completeness of its contents. Because Larson
Electronics is continuously updating and upgrading its products, we reserve the right to change the contents of this manual at any
time and without notice.
Introduction
In recent years, the demand for Driving Assistant Systems (including Infrared Thermal Vision Systems) has increased dramatically.
Infrared Driving Assistant Systems can help a driver identify pedestrians in front of their vehicle during low light situations. The
Speedir Thermal Infrared Driving Assistant is capable of identifying the objects generating heat, displaying them on a screen, and
improving the driver’s experience.
The infrared thermal imager detects infrared energy (heat) through a non-contacting method, converts it to an electric signal, and
generates a thermal image that appears on a screen. The infrared thermal imager is an inspection device which can be used to
calculate the temperature. It can also precisely quantize and measure the detected heat, so that you can observe the thermal image and
accurately identify animals and pedestrians.
Per the statistics of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, while night driving only accounts for 25% of total road
traffic, the number of fatal accidents accounts for 50%. This makes having an Infrared Driving Assistant an important safety
accessory for any driver.

Thermal Camera
Speedir thermal imaging cameras are technically not cameras, but heat sensors translating
heat signatures into images. They require no visible light to function and can pick up heat
signatures through dust and smoke, even from behind vegetation.
Connectors
Easy to install standard RCA plugs will connect to any vehicle video input or external
display. CONNECTORS
Black: Power 12v-24v
Yellow: Standard RCA Video
White: Standard RCA Sound
Product Overview
NOTE: The color thermal images appearing in this manual are from the Night Owl Plus camera model. Object
Identification: Identify animals and pedestrians during low light situations.
Animal Detection Pedestrian Detection
Long Distance Detection: Identify pedestrians and animals before you can see them with your headlights. The infrared thermal
imager can detect and provide alerts to hazards as far away as 1300ft. (400m.).

Installation
Professional installation of Speedir thermal cameras is recommended.
Using the enclosed mounting hardware, the camera must be installed facing the direction of travel. It can be installed anywhere in the
vehicle grill or bumper; however, custom brackets or additional mounting hardware may be required depending on the vehicle’s
design.
When installing the device, do not block radiators or vents otherwise it may cause overheating of the vehicle or fire.
The AI Module must be installed in a protected area inside the cab.
Thermal cameras are similar to human eyes in that they are sensitive. To avoid damage to a camera, do not direct it at high radiation
sources (such as the sun, active welding machines, or laser pointers).
Correct Installation Correct Installation
Normal Operation
Clicking sound coming from the thermal camera. This means the shutter is operating properly.
Frozen image for a brief moment. When the internal cache is full, the image on the screen will freeze for a split second and then
reset. It is a perfectly standard function of the thermal sensors.
