Thank you for purchasing a Lava Fires gas grate, manufactured to the highest
standards and tested in the Republic of South Africa. This appliance is designed to
give users years of trouble free & efficient service. Please read the following
instructions carefully. Note: this appliance must be installed by a registered LP Gas
fitter, as indicated below. The manufacturer and its distributors cannot be held
liable for injuries or damages caused by faulty or incorrect installation or use of
the appliance.

IMPORTANT:
Read these instructions for use carefully so as to familiarise yourself with the appliance
before connecting it to its gas container. Keep these instructions for future reference!
1. INTRODUCTION
Below appliances conform to the requirements of SANS: 1539, LPGSA SA :
FGD003 – Gas Vent Free (600 Pebble) | Permit Nr : 1250-2/3-RSA-17-A
FGD004 – Gas Vent Free (900 Pebble) | Permit Nr : 1250-2/3-RSA-17-A

WARNING!
This appliance shall not be installed in enclosed bedrooms and bathrooms.
WARNING!
This is a flue-less gas fired heater. It uses air (oxygen) from the room in which it is installed.
Provisions for adequate ventilation must be provided. Refer to the appropriate section of
the user manual.
WARNING!
CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING CAN LEAD TO DEATH.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble the flue,
with headaches, dizziness or nausea. If you have these signs, the heater may not be
working properly. Get fresh air at once! Have the heater serviced. Some people are
more affected by carbon monoxide than others. These include pregnant woman, people
with heart or lung disease, or anemia, those under influence of alcohol and those at high
altitudes.

Important information for the user:
Read these instructions carefully before using the appliance and retain them for
future reference. This appliance consumes oxygen when in use and it is important
that it is only used in a well ventilated area for the efficient performance of the
appliance and for the safety of the occupants of the area. (SEE SECTION 12 for
details.)
This appliance may only be installed by a registered LP Gas Installer. All registered
installers are issued with a card carrying their Registration Number. Ask to be
shown the card before allowing the installation work to commence and make a
note of the Installer QCC Number. Upon completion of the installation, the
Installer is required to explain the operational details of the appliance, together
with the safety instructions. You should only sign for acceptance of installation
when the installation is completed to your satisfaction.
Important information for the installer:
This appliance may only be installed by a LP Gas Installer, registered with the
Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association of Southern Africa. The appliance must be
installed in accordance with the requirements of SANS 1008-1 and any Fire
Department Regulations and/or local Municipal by Laws, applicable to the area. If
in doubt, check with the relevant authorities, before undertaking the installation.

Upon completion of the installation, you are required to fully explain and
demonstrate to the user, the operational details and safety practices applicable
to the appliance and installation thereof. The appliance has been specifically
designed for use with LPG and may not be used with Town’s gas or Natural Gas.
Read the instructions carefully before commencing with the installation. Pay
particular attention to the provision of adequate ventilation as this appliance is
designed for use without a flue. Insufficient ventilation may impair the efficient
performance of the appliance and may endanger the lives of the occupants of
the area of use. See Safety Information! (SEE SECTION 3 for details).
3. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
 Do not use this appliance if it is leaking gas. (See notes below).
 If there is an apparent gas leak (smell of gas), close the control valve on the
appliance.
Make sure that there are no naked flames within 5-meters of the appliance and
check for leaks as described below.
 Never check for gas leaks with a naked flame as this is extremely dangerous!
 To check for a gas leak, use a brush dipped in a soapy water solution (e.g. water
with a dishwashing detergent added) and apply the solution to all the joints of
the system. If there is leak, turn off the gas supply at the isolation valve, which
the installer will provide as part of the installation. Call a service technician to
examine the appliance and do not use the appliance until the service technician
has declared that it is safe to do so.
 Should you suspect a leak at the cylinder connections (outside the building)
apply the soapy water solution to the visible joints, such where the regulator
fits into the cylinder, or where the regulator fits into the flexible hose, or the
joints on the manifold, if fitted. Bubbles will form should there be a leak. If you
are unable to stop a leak at this point, turn off the cylinder valve/valves and
call a service technician to correct the fault. As with leaks inside the building,
do not use the appliance until a service technician as declared that it is safe to
do so.
 Ensure that the appliance is used away from flammable materials. If installing
in an open area without a firebox, ensure that the surrounding area is clear of
any flammable material for a minimum of 1 meter all-round the appliance.
 Keep young children away from the appliance when in use.

 In the event of burn-back, where the flame burns back to the jet, immediately
turn off the gas supply at the control valve on the front panel. After ensuring
the flame is extinguished re-light the appliance. Should burn-back occur again,
close the control valve and call for a service technician to examine the
appliance and do not use until the technician declare it safe to do so.
 This appliance is fitted with an oxygen depletion sensor for your safety. Do not
interfere with, or remove, or modify this device.
 Do not remove the model rating plate attached to your appliance. This contains
important information in addition to the serial number of the unit, which the
manufacturer will require, should you need to make a service call.
4. INSTALLING THE GAS GRATE (FITMENT OF THE
APPLIANCE)
 This appliance is designed as a vent free or flue-less appliance. If installed as
such, carefully read the ventilation requirements indicated in SECTION 12 of
this booklet, the specific requirement of SANS 10087-1 and any municipal by
laws.
 If installing into an existing fireplace, with or without a manufactured firebox,
always ensure that the chimney has been properly cleaned before installation
takes place.
 If installing in an open area without a firebox, ensure that the surrounding area
is clear of flammable materials for a minimum of 1 meter all-round the
appliance.
 If installing in an open area, the appliance should be mounted on a plinth, not
less than 500mm above the floor level. The plinth must be constructed from a
non-flammable material e.g. brick or concrete.
 Do not install the appliance against a wall, unless that is of a double brick
construction or well insulated wall.
 Refer to the table in Section 2 for recommended manufactured firebox sizes
per model number.
 If a damper is installed in the flue, make sure that it is functioning correctly.
 It is particularly important to ensure that the gas grate is placed on a flat, level
surface. Failure to take note of this may lead to performance problems.

5. GAS CYLINDER
 Follow the notes in Section 4 to prepare the gas grate for use.
 The gas supply will require at least one 19kg to 48kg LPG cylinder for efficient
performance. Only a 9kg gas cylinder is allowed indoors.
 This appliance requires an operation pressure of 2.8 kPa at the appliance.
 A suitable LPG Regulator that complies with the requirements of SANS 1237,
must be installed on the exterior of the building.
 Ensure that the flow capacity of the installed Regulator is of a sufficient
capacity to drive the gas grate model to be installed.
 Do not connect the gas supply to the appliance using a flexible hose. The heat
from the Gas grate will damage the hose.
 Copper piping in accordance to the specifications of SANS 10087-1, must be
used.
 The gas consumption of the gas grates are such that a minimum of 9kg LPG
cylinder is required. For optimal efficiency we recommend to use a 48Kg LPG
cylinder.
6. ASSEMBLEY INSTRUCTIONS
 Supplied with the appliance is a bag of vermiculite chips – a golden
noncombustible organic substance that is critical to the operation of the gas
grate. Evenly spread the full quantity supplied inside the burner tray until it is
level with the edges of the tray.
 Place more of the vermiculite to the center of the burner (5-10mm high) to
ensure they taper down to the edges of the burner tray.
 Included too are white natural pebbles stones which vary in size & shape. They
are used for aesthetic effect and will not have any effect on the performance
WARNING!
The appliance comes complete with a single ventilation grill (250x100mm) that must be
installed approx. 100mm below the gas grate in the center of the grate (SEE FIGURE 3)
in order to provide fresh oxygen intake. The grill can be installed on either side of the
gas grate. Where the grate is installed close to an exterior wall, the ventilation opening
can be
external.

or safety of the product. The variances in size of the pebbles may be used to
ensure suitable placement of, when laying them out over the bed of
vermiculite.
 Place the pebbles in rows starting at the front of the grate and build them row
by row, until the burner tray is completely covered with pebbles. The rows
should be staggered (see figure 1). Only one level of the pebbles is required.
It is not advised to stack pebbles on top of each other.
 You are now ready to light the LAVA Fires gas grate for the first time and carry
out the final step in setting up the gas grate for use.
 To light the appliance, refer to Section 7-9 below.
7. LIGHTING THE APPLIANCE
 If at any time during the ignition process, or during use, you smell gas,
immediately turn off the gas supply to the appliance at both the control knob
and at the shut-off valve. Do not use the appliance until it has been checked
for gas leaks as described in Section 3 by a qualified gas technician.
 The gas appliance is fitted with a Piezo ignitor, built into the control valve
which automatically ignites the gas grate when the control valve knob is turned
to the IGNITE position. It does not require the use of a lighter of matches for
ignition. It also does not require batteries or electrical connection!
 After checking that the gas supply on the gas grate is turned on, press and turn
the control knob anti-clockwise approx. 50 degrees (direction“10 o’clock”)
and hold for 5-8 seconds to allow gas flow into the gas grate.
 Whilst the control knob is pressed in, continue turning the knob further 40
degrees (direction “9 o’clock”) until a click sound is heard. This should ignite
the burner! Continue holding the control pressed in for few more seconds until
the flame stops flickering and had stabilized.
 If the burner does not ignite the first time, repeat the aforementioned step by
first turning the control knob back to the OFF position and then repeating the
ignition action. Do not forget to push the control knob in, before turning it to
the ignite position.
 Once the burner is lit, release the knob (from pressed-in position). Increase
the flame by turning the control knob in an anti-clockwise direction to the
required level of heat output.
 To reduce the heat output, turn the control knob in a clockwise direction.

8. LIGHTING THE GAS GRATE MANUALLY
 In the event of the Piezo ignitor not working properly, ignite the appliance with
a lighter or matches. In such cases, follow the Specific instructions below to
light the appliance manually.
 Check that the gas supply to the Gas Grate is opened/turned-on.
 Hold a lit match or barbecue lighter to the right hand side of the gas grate, next
to the Pilot Light and whilst holding the match or lighter in that position, push
the Control Knob in and turn anti-clockwise to the ignite. See figure 2.
 Once the Pilot burner is lit, continue to hold the control knob in the pushed-in
position for 15-20 seconds, before turning the Control Knob in and anti-
clockwise direction to the required heat setting as described in Section 5.
9. LIGHTING THE APPLIANCE FOR THE FIRST TIME
 Before lighting the appliance for the first time, ensure that there are no gas
leaks and that a pressure test was done.
 The installer is required to ignite the appliance in the presence of the
owner/user. The installer is obliged to instruct the owner/user in the safe
operation of the appliance and completed installation.
 The position and operation of the isolating valve must be explained.
 Installers are required to provide the owner/user with a completion certificate,
which must be signed and dated by both partied. Ensure that your
Name/Company name and SAQCC number appear on the certificate.
10. TURNING OFF THE APPLIANCE
 Turn the control knob CLOCKWISE (direction 9 o’clock). Do not press knob
inward in order to turn. The knob will stop as it hits the stopper.
 At that point, press and hold down the knob and continue turning the knob
CLOCKWISE to OFF position (12 o’clock), then release the knob.

11. USING APPLIANCE
 When in use make sure that there are no flammable materials close to the
front, sides or rear of the appliance.
 Always use a fire-guard if there are small children or animals in the room.
 Users should become familiar with the normal flame patterns of the Pilot
burner and main burners.
 Be aware that the Knob, on the control valve cover may become HOT, when
the appliance is in use. Gloves or tongs should be used when moving this cover
to access the control valve knob.
12. VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS
 There are certain important safety guidelines to be followed with regards to
the provision of adequate ventilation for vent free appliances. These guidelines
must be noted and the installation must adhere to these. The guidelines are
covered in the installation code: SANS 10087-1. Your installer is required to
install the appliance in accordance with the requirements of the code.
 The fireplace CANNOT BE INSTALLED in bathrooms or bedrooms!
 The fireplace specifically designed to be installed in an open area.
 There must be permanent ventilation openings in the room at floor and ceiling
levels. These should never be blocked. These openings should supply a direct
flow of fresh air to the areas where the appliance is installed.
 The minimum room volume is 35 meters cubed (35m3). In the case of open
plan layouts, the total volume of the combined areas, may be used in
determining if the minimum of 35m3 is met.
 In addition to above general room ventilation, specific ventilation opening of
220 x 70mm is required. The opening must be directly in line with burner
(located below the gas grate in the center). The ventilation opening can be on
either side of the gas grate, including exterior walls.
 Included with the fireplace is a single ventilation grill (250x100mm) in brushed
stainless steel finish to cover the above opening. (See FIGURE 3 diagram).
 A flue or a decorative cowl may be installed over the unit. Your installer will
advise on this. Where a cowl is used, it may be fitted with a flue if desired, but
this is not a requirement.

13. CARE AND MAITENANCE
 There are NO user service points on this appliance.
 It is recommended that the appliance to be serviced annually, by a qualified
technician.
 Before undertaking any cleaning or maintenance work on the appliance, make
sure that it is not HOT and that the isolation valve is turned OFF.
 Due to normal wear and tear, we recommend to replace the vermiculite chips
every 2-3 years. Vermiculite chips can be ordered directly by the factory or at
your nearest branch.
14. MANUFACTURER’S WARANTY
 This appliance is manufactured by Lava Fires SA (Pty) Ltd. The grate body
carries a standard 5-year warranty against heat damage as well as 5 years on
the gas control unit against any malfunction.
 Warranty will only apply if installed correctly by a qualified certified gas
installer who followed the above guidelines.
 Warranty will not apply if the unit’s factory settings had been altered.
 Vermiculite chips are not covered by the warrant which are subject to normal
wear and tear.
