Generlsfety
Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsafety:
•Observegoodhousekeepingintheareaofthemachinesduringandaftermaintenance.
•Whenliftinganyheavyobject:
1.Makesurethatyoucanstandsafelywithoutslipping.
2.Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
3.Useaslowliftingforce.Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouattempttolift.
4.Liftbystandingorbypushingupwithyourlegmuscles;thisactionremovesthestrainfromthe
musclesinyourback.Donotattempttoliftanyobjectthatweighsmorethan16kg(35lb)orthat
youthinkistooheavyforyou.
•Donotperformanyactionthatcauseshazardstothecustomer,orthatmakestheequipmentunsafe.
•Beforeyoustartthemachine,makesurethatotherservicetechniciansandthecustomer'spersonnelare
notinahazardousposition.
•Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplace,awayfromallpersonnel,whileyouareservicing
themachine.
•Keepyourtoolcaseawayfromwalkareassothatotherpeoplewillnottripoverit.
•Donotwearlooseclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartsofamachine.Makesurethatyour
sleevesarefastenedorrolledupaboveyourelbows.Ifyourhairislong,fastenit.
•Inserttheendsofyournecktieorscarfinsideclothingorfastenitwithanonconductiveclip,about8
centimeters(3inches)fromtheend.
•Donotwearjewelry,chains,metal-frameeyeglasses,ormetalfastenersforyourclothing.
Attention:Metalobjectsaregoodelectricalconductors.
•Wearsafetyglasseswhenyouarehammering,drilling,soldering,cuttingwire,attachingsprings,using
solvents,orworkinginanyotherconditionsthatmightbehazardoustoyoureyes.
•fterservice,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.Replaceanysafetydevice
thatiswornordefective.
•Reinstallallcoverscorrectlybeforereturningthemachinetothecustomer.
•Fanlouversonthemachinehelptopreventoverheatingofinternalcomponents.Donotobstructfan
louversorcoverthemwithlabelsorstickers.
Electriclsfety
Observethefollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipment.
Importnt:Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasoft
materialthatdoesnotinsulateyouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrents.Manycustomershave,near
theirequipment,rubberfloormatsthatcontainsmallconductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischarges.

•Findtheroomemergencypower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectingswitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical
accidentoccurs,youcanthenoperatetheswitchorunplugthepowercordquickly.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltages.
•Disconnectallpowerbefore:
–Performingamechanicalinspection
–Workingnearpowersupplies
–Removingorinstallingmainunits
•Beforeyoustarttoworkonthemachine,unplugthepowercord.Ifyoucannotunplugit,askthecustomer
topower-offthewallboxthatsuppliespowertothemachine,andtolockthewallboxintheoffposition.
•Ifyouneedtoworkonamachinethathasexposeelectricalcircuits,observethefollowingprecautions:
–Ensurethatanotherperson,familiarwiththepower-offcontrols,isnearyou.
Attention:notherpersonmustbetheretoswitchoffthepower,ifnecessary.
–Useonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourback.
Attention:nelectricalshockcanoccuronlywhenthereisacompletecircuit.Byobservingtheabove
rule,youmaypreventacurrentfrompassingthroughyourbody.
–Whenusingtesters,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessoriesfor
thattester.
–Standonsuitablerubbermats(obtainedlocally,ifnecessary)toinsulateyoufromgroundssuchas
metalfloorstripsandmachineframes.
Observethespecialsafetyprecautionswhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltages;Instructionsforthese
precautionsareinthesafetysectionsofmaintenanceinformation.Useextremecarewhenmeasuring
highvoltages.
•Regularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition.
•Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters.
•Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit.First,checkthatithasbeenpoweredoff.
•lwayslookcarefullyforpossiblehazardsinyourworkarea.Examplesofthesehazardsaremoistfloors,
ungroundedpowerextensioncables,powersurges,andmissingsafetygrounds.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesurfaceofaplasticdentalmirror.Thesurfaceis
conductive;suchtouchingcancausepersonalinjuryandmachinedamage.
•Donotservicethefollowingpartswiththepoweronwhentheyareremovedfromtheirnormaloperating
placesinamachine:
–Powersupplyunits
–Pumps
–Blowersandfans
–Motorgenerators
–Partssimilartothoselistedabove
Thispracticeensurescorrectgroundingoftheunits.
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs:
–Usecaution;donotbecomeavictimyourself.
–Switchoffpower.
–Sendanotherpersontogetmedicalaid.
Sfetyinspectionguide
Thepurposeofthisinspectionguideistoassistyouinidentifyingpotentiallyunsafeconditions.seach
machinewasdesignedandbuilt,requiredsafetyitemswereinstalledtoprotectusersandservicetechnicians
frominjury.Thisguideaddressesonlythoseitems.Youshouldusegoodjudgmenttoidentifypotential
safetyhazardsduetoattachmentofnon-ThinkPadfeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbythisinspectionguide.
Ifanyunsafeconditionsarepresent,youmustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeand
whetheryoucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrectingtheproblem.

Considertheseconditionsandthesafetyhazardstheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower(primaryvoltageontheframecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock)
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamagedCRTfaceorabulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinghardware
Todeterminewhetherthereareanypotentiallyunsafeconditions,usethefollowingchecklistatthebeginning
ofeveryservicetask.Beginthecheckswiththepoweroff,andthepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1. Check exterior covers for damage (loose, broken, or sharp edges).
2. Power off the computer. Disconnect the power cord.
3. Check the power cord for:
a. third-wire ground connector in good condition. Use a meter to measure third-wire ground
continuity for 0.1 ohm or less between the external ground pin and the frame ground.
b. The power cord should be the authorized type specified for your computer.
c. Insulation must not be frayed or worn.
4. Check for cracked or bulging batteries.
5. Remove the cover.
6. Check for any obvious non-ThinkPad alterations. Use good judgment as to the safety of any
non-ThinkPad alterations.
7. Check inside the unit for any obvious unsafe conditions, such as metal filings, contamination, water or
other liquids, or signs of fire or smoke damage.
8. Check for worn, frayed, or pinched cables.
9. Check that the power-supply cover fasteners (screws or rivets) have not been removed or tampered
with.
Hndlingdevicesthtresensitivetoelectrostticdischrge
nycomputerpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbeconsideredsensitiveto
electrostaticdischarge(ESD.)ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceinchargebetweenobjects.
ProtectagainstESDdamagebyequalizingthechargesothatthemachine,thepart,theworkmat,andthe
personhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge.
Notes:
1.Useproduct-specificESDprocedureswhentheyexceedtherequirementsnotedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesyouusehavebeencertified(ISO9000)asfullyeffective.
WhenhandlingESD-sensitiveparts:
•Keepthepartsinprotectivepackagesuntiltheyareinsertedintotheproduct.
•voidcontactwithotherpeople.
•Wearagroundedwriststrapagainstyourskintoeliminatestaticonyourbody.
•Preventthepartfromtouchingyourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeeven
whenyouarewearingawriststrap.
•Useagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Thematisespeciallyusefulwhen
handlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Selectagroundingsystem,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecific
servicerequirement.
Note:TheuseofagroundingsystemtoguardagainstESDdamageisdesirablebutnotnecessary.

• If the computer is equipped with both a hard disk drive and an mS T solid-state drive, do not use the
mS T solid-state drive as a bootable device. The mS T solid-state drive is designed and developed for
“cache” function purpose only.

Str tegy for repl cing FRUs
Before repl cing p rts:
Ensure that all software fixes, drivers, and UEFI BIOS downloads are installed before replacing any FRUs
listed in this manual.
fter a system board is replaced, ensure that the latest UEFI BIOS is loaded to the system board before
completing the service action.
Use the following strategy to prevent unnecessary expense for replacing and servicing FRUs:
•IfyouareinstructedtoreplaceaFRUbutthereplacementdoesnotcorrecttheproblem,reinstallthe
originalFRUbeforeyoucontinue.
•Somecomputershavebothaprocessorboardandasystemboard.Ifyouareinstructedtoreplaceeither
theprocessorboardorthesystemboard,andreplacingoneofthemdoesnotcorrecttheproblem,
reinstallthatboard,andthenreplacetheotherone.
•IfanadapteroradeviceconsistsofmorethanoneFRU,anyoftheFRUsmaybethecauseoftheerror.
Beforereplacingtheadapterordevice,removetheFRUs,onebyone,toseeifthesymptomschange.
ReplaceonlytheFRUthatchangedthesymptoms.
Strtegyforreplcinghrddiskdrive,hybriddrive,orsolid-stte
drive
lwaystrytorunalow-levelformatbeforereplacingaharddiskdrive,ahybriddrive,asolid-statedrive.

Attention: The drive startup sequence in the computer you are servicing may have been changed. Be
extremely careful during write operations such as copying, saving, or formatting. If you select an incorrect
drive, data or programs can be overwritten.
If the computer is shipped with both an mS T solid-state drive and a hard disk drive, the mS T solid-state
drive is used for the “cache” function and to support the Intel® Rapid Start Technology. It is recommended
that users do not replace the mS T solid-state drive by themselves. Otherwise, the “cache” function will
not work and the Intel Rapid Start Technology cannot be used any more.
Attention: Ensure that you partition the mS T solid-state drive after installing it on the computer you are
servicing. Otherwise, the mS T solid-state drive will not function correctly.

Some components mounted on a system board are very sensitive. Improper handling of a system board can
cause damage to those components, and may cause a system malfunction.
Attention: When handling a system board:
•Donotdropasystemboardorapplyanyexcessiveforcetoit.
•voidroughhandlingofanykind.
•voidbendingasystemboardandhardpushingtopreventcrackingateachBG(BallGridrray)chipset.
Howtouseerrormessge
Usetheerrorcodesdisplayedonthescreentodiagnosefailures.Ifmorethanoneerrorcodeisdisplayed,
beginthediagnosiswiththefirsterrorcode.Whatevercausesthefirsterrorcodemayalsocausefalseerror

Thistopicintroducesdifferentmodeltypesandhowtoidentifyeachtype.
DynmicConfigureToOrder(CTO)
ThismodelprovidestheabilityforacustomertoconfigureaLenovosolutionfromawebsite,andhavethis
configurationsenttofulfillment,whereitisbuiltandshippeddirectlytothecustomer.Themachinelabeland
eSupportwillloadtheseproductsasthe4-characterMT,4-charactermodeland2-charactercountrycode.
Themodelis“CTO1”andthedefaultcountrycodeis“WW”(example:20CTO1WW).
Specilbidmodel
ThismodelisauniqueconfigurationthathasbeennegotiatedbetweenLenovoandthecustomer.unique

ToidentifythemajorFRUsforaproduct,dothefollowing:

•A FRU should not be repl ced bec use of single, unreproducible f ilure. Single failures can occur
for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with a hardware defect, such as cosmic radiation,
electrostatic discharge, or software errors. Consider replacing a FRU only when a problem recurs. If you
suspect that a FRU is defective, clear the error log and run the test again. If the error does not recur, do

Restoring the f ctory contents by using the Recovery Disc Set
When the main storage drive is replaced because of a failure, no product recovery program is on the new
drive. In this case, the customer must use the Recovery Disc Set to recover the computer. Order the
Recovery Disc Set and the drive at the same time so that the customer can restore the computer to the
factory default settings by using the Recovery Disc Set after the new drive is installed.
Depending on the model, the number of recovery discs included in the Recovery Disc Set differs. The
Recovery Disc Set might consist of the user instructions and the following set of DVDs to restore the
computer to the original factory configuration.
•OperatingSystemRecoveryDisc(onedisc):ThisdiscrestorestheMicrosoftWindowsoperatingsystem.
Usethisdisctostarttherecoveryprocess.
•ApplicationsanDriversRecoveryDisc(oneormorediscs):Thisdiscrestoresthepreinstalled
applicationsanddriversonthecomputer.
•SupplementalRecoveryDisc:Thisdisccontainsadditionalcontent,suchasupdatestothesoftwarethat
waspreinstalledonthecomputer.NotallrecoverydiscsetscomewithaSupplementalRecoveryDisc.
