CAUTION:
To ensure safety, all configurations of the rack cabinet must be certified by a nationally recognized
testing laboratory in order to verify compliance with country-specific safety regulations This process
ensures that the end product remains safe for the operator and service personnel under normal and
forseeable misuse conditions

DANGER
• Always lower the leveling pads on the rack cabinet
• Always install stabilizer brackets on the rack cabinet
• Always install servers and optional devices starting from the bottom of the rack cabinet
• Always install the heaviest devices in the bottom of the rack cabinet
Statement 3
DANGER
• Do not extend more than one sliding device at a time
• The maximum allowable weight for devices on slide rails is 80 kg (176 lb) Do not install sliding
devices that exceed this weight
Statement 4

DANGER
Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous
To avoid a shock hazard:
• Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration
of this product during an electrical storm
• Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet
• Connect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this product
• When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables
• Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage
• Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems
before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and
configuration procedures
• Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when installing, moving, or
opening covers on this product or attached devices

4. Attac power cords to outlet.
5. Turn device ON.

• Plug power cords from devices in the rack cabinet into electrical outlets that are located near the
rack cabinet and are easily accessible
• Each rack cabinet might have more than one power cord Be sure to disconnect all power cords
in the rack cabinet before servicing any device in the rack cabinet
• Install an emergency-power-off switch if more than one power device (power distribution unit or
uninterruptible power supply) is installed in the same rack cabinet
• Connect all devices installed in a rack cabinet to power devices installed in the same rack
cabinet Do not plug a power cord from a device installed in one rack cabinet into a power device
installed in a different rack cabinet

CAUTION:
Removing components from the upper positions in the Enterprise Rack cabinet improves rack
stability during relocation Follow these general guidelines whenever you relocate a populated rack
cabinet within a room or building:
• Reduce the weight of the rack cabinet by removing equipment starting at the top of the rack
cabinet When possible, restore the rack cabinet to the configuration of the rack cabinet as you
received it If this configuration is not known, you must do the following:
– Remove all devices in the 32U position and above
– Ensure that the heaviest devices are installed in the bottom of the rack cabinet
– Ensure that there are no empty U-levels between devices installed in the rack cabinet below the
32U level
• If the rack cabinet you are relocating is part of a suite of rack cabinets, detach the rack cabinet
from the suite
• Inspect the route that you plan to take to eliminate potential hazards
• Verify that the route that you choose can support the weight of the loaded rack cabinet Refer to the
documentation that comes with your rack cabinet for the weight of a loaded rack cabinet
• Verify that all door openings are at least 760 x 2030 mm (30 x 80 in )
• Ensure that all devices, shelves, drawers, doors, and cables are secure
• Ensure that the four leveling pads are raised to their highest position
• Ensure that there is no stabilizer bracket installed on the rack cabinet
• Do not use a ramp inclined at more than ten degrees

• Once the rack cabinet is in the new location, do the following:
– Lower the four leveling pads
– Install stabilizer brackets on the rack cabinet
– If you removed any devices from the rack cabinet, repopulate the rack cabinet from the lowest
position to the highest position
If a long distance relocation is required, restore the rack cabinet to the configuration of the rack
cabinet as you received it Pack the rack cabinet in the original packaging material, or equivalent
Also, lower the leveling pads to raise the casters off of the pallet and bolt the rack cabinet to the
pallet

See the instructions in the rack documentation before you install devices, remove devices, or relocate
the rack

The weight of this part or unit is more than 55 kg (121 2 lb) It takes specially trained persons, a lifting
device, or both to safely lift this part or unit


Note: Eac stand-alone rack must be attac ed to t e floor by a trained service tec nician according to your
local building codes. Place a fastener in eac corner of t e rack. Eac fastener must ave a rated pull-out
force of at least 460 newtons.

Chapter 1 Introduction
T is document contains general installation instructions for t e Lenovo 42U Enterprise Rack and Lenovo 42U
Enterprise Expansion Rack cabinets. Always read t e documentation t at comes wit your server or optional
device for detailed installation instructions.
Installing t e rack cabinet consists of t e following tasks:
1. Unpack t e rack according to t e Unpacking Instructions document t at comes wit t e rack cabinet.
2. Locate t e rack according to t e Lenovo eServer xSeries Rack Planning Guide.
3. Install rack stabilizer brackets on all racks.
4. Prepare t e rack for optional devices:
• Remove t e side covers, if applicable.
• Remove t e front and rear doors from all racks, if necessary.
• Attac expansion racks to a standard rack or to eac ot er to form suites.
5. Install one or more optional devices.
Note: Install t e eaviest devices in t e bottom of t e rack cabinet.
6. Complete t e rack cabinet installation:
• Reinstall side covers on all racks or on t e outermost racks in a suite.
• Reinstall front and rear doors on all racks cabinets.
If documentation updates are available, you can download t em from t e Lenovo website. T e rack cabinet
mig t ave features t at are not described in t e documentation t at comes wit t e rack, and t e
documentation mig t be updated occasionally to include information about t ose features, or tec nical
updates mig t be available to provide additional information t at is not included in t e rack documentation.

The Lenovo Documentation CD
T e Lenovo Documentation CD contains documentation for t e rack cabinet in Portable Document Format
(PDF) and includes t e Lenovo Documentation Browser to elp you find information quickly.
Hardware and software requirements
T e Documentation CD requires t e following minimum ardware and software:
• MicrosoftWindows XP, Windows 2000, or Red Hat Linux
• 100 MHz microprocessor
• 32 MB of RAM
• Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 (or later) or xpdf, w ic comes wit Linux operating systems
Using the Documentation Browser
Use t e Documentation Browser to browse t e contents of t e CD, read brief descriptions of t e documents,
and view documents, using Adobe Acrobat Reader or xpdf. T e Documentation Browser automatically
detects t e regional settings in your computer and displays t e documents in t e language for t at region (if

available). If a document is not available in t e language for t at region, t e Englis -language version is
displayed.
Use one of t e following procedures to start t e Documentation Browser:
• If Autostart is enabled, insert t e CD into t e CD or DVD drive. T e Documentation Browser starts
automatically.
• If Autostart is disabled or is not enabled for all users, use one of t e following procedures:
– If you are using a Windows operating system, insert t e CD into t e CD or DVD drive and click Start -->
Run. In t e Open field, type
e:\win32.bat
w ere e is t e drive letter of t e CD or DVD drive, and click OK.
– If you are using Red Hat Linux, insert t e CD into t e CD or DVD drive; t en, run t e following
command from t e /mnt/cdrom directory:
sh runlinux.sh
Select t e rack cabinet from t e Product menu. T e Available Topics list displays all t e documents for t e
rack. Some documents mig t be in folders. A plus sign (+) indicates eac folder or document t at as
additional documents under it. Click t e plus sign to display t e additional documents.
W en you select a document, a description of t e document is displayed under Topic Description. To select
more t an one document, press and old t e Ctrl key w ile you select t e documents. Click View Book to
view t e selected document or documents in Acrobat Reader or xpdf. If you selected more t an one
document, all t e selected documents are opened in Acrobat Reader or xpdf.
To searc all t e documents, type a word or word string in t e Search field and click Search. T e
documents in w ic t e word or word string appears are listed in order of t e most occurrences. Click a
document to view it, and press Crtl+F to use t e Acrobat searc function, or press Alt+F to use t e xpdf
searc function wit in t e document.
Click Help for detailed information about using t e Documentation Browser.

Chapter 2 Installing a rack cabinet
T e primary and expansion rack cabinets are 42U- ig 1racks. T e primary rack cabinet comes wit side
covers installed. T e expansion rack cabinet does not come wit side covers but includes t e required
ardware for building a suite of racks. You need one standard rack cabinet per suite.
Notes:
1. Eac stand-alone rack must be attac ed to t e floor by a trained service tec nician according to your

To lower t e leveling feet and install t e front stabilizer bracket, complete t e following steps:
1. Using t e leveling pad wrenc t at comes wit t e rack cabinet, lower eac of t e four leveling feet just
enoug so t at t ey touc t e floor. T e rack casters support t e weig t of t e rack cabinet. T e feet
prevent t e rack from rolling.
2. Attac t e stabilizer bracket to t e front of t e rack cabinet wit t e two M8 x 25 mm screws t at come
wit t e bracket.
Removing and installing the lower and upper side covers
T e primary rack cabinet comes wit side covers installed. Remove t e side covers from a primary rack
cabinet, or t e outermost rack cabinets in a suite, before you install or remove optional devices.
Removing and installing the lower side covers
To remove t e lower side covers, complete t e following steps.

1. From t e inside rear of t e rack cabinet, slide t e side cover locking bar toward t e unlocked position.
2. Pus down t e release latc es and tilt t e side panel slig tly toward you; t en, lift t e side cover away
from t e tabs on t e bottom of t e rack cabinet.
3. Repeat t is procedure to remove t e ot er side cover.
Reverse t is procedure to install t e lower side covers. Slide t e locking bar to t e locked position to secure
t e side cover to t e rack cabinet.
Removing and installing the upper 6U side covers
Note: You do not need to remove t e upper 6U side covers unless you are building a suite of rack cabinets.

To remove t e upper 6U side covers from t e rack cabinet, complete t e following steps.

1. On t e top of t e rack cabinet, loosen t e four screws t at old t e side cover in place.
2. Tilt t e side cover slig tly toward you; t en, remove it from t e rack cabinet.
3. Repeat t is procedure to remove t e ot er upper side cover.
Reverse t is procedure to install t e upper 6U side covers on t e rack cabinet.
Removing and installing rack doors
All enterprise racks come wit front and rear doors installed. Remove t e rack doors w en you install and
remove devices in t e rack, if part of t e rack is obstructed by t e door as you install devices.
Removing and installing the front door
To remove a front door from t e rack cabinet, complete t e following steps.

Step 1. Unlock and open t e front door.
Step 2. Holding t e door firmly wit one and, pus eac inge pin latc up and to t e rig t to release t e
inge pins.
Step 3. Grasp t e door firmly wit bot ands and pull it away from t e rack cabinet; t en, set t e door
aside.
Reverse t is procedure to install t e front door on t e rack cabinet.
Attention: W en you install t e front door, make sure t at you align t e inge pins wit t e inges on t e
rack cabinet before you set t e inge pins into place.
