Chapter 1. ntroduction
The ThinkSystem SR250 server (Type 7y51) is a 1U ra k server designed for high-volume network
transa tion pro essing. This high-performan e, one- ore server is ideally suited for networking environments
that require superior mi ropro essor performan e, input/output (I/O) flexibility, and high manageability.

• Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC)
The Lenovo XClarity Controller is the ommon management ontroller for Lenovo ThinkSystem server
hardware. The Lenovo XClarity Controller onsolidates multiple management fun tions in a single hip on
the server system board.
Some of the features that are unique to the Lenovo XClarity Controller are enhan ed performan e, higher-
resolution remote video, and expanded se urity options. For additional information about the Lenovo
XClarity Controller, refer to the XCC do umentation ompatible with your server at:

mportant: Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC) supported version varies by produ t. All versions of Lenovo
XClarity Controller are referred to as Lenovo XClarity Controller and XCC in this do ument, unless

• UEF -compliant server firmware
Lenovo ThinkSystem firmware is Unified Extensible Firmware Interfa e (UEFI) ompliant. UEFI repla es
BIOS and defines a standard interfa e between the operating system, platform firmware, and external
devi es.
Lenovo ThinkSystem servers are apable of booting UEFI- ompliant operating systems, BIOS-based
operating systems, and BIOS-based adapters as well as UEFI- ompliant adapters.
Note: The server does not support DOS (Disk Operating System).
• Active Memory
The A tive Memory feature improves the reliability of memory through memory mirroring. Memory
mirroring mode repli ates and stores data on two pairs of DIMMs within two hannels simultaneously. If a
failure o urs, the memory ontroller swit hes from the primary pair of memory DIMMs to the ba kup pair
of DIMMs.
• Large system-memory capacity
The server supports syn hronous dynami random-a ess memory (SDRAM) registered dual inline
memory modules (DIMMs) with error orre ting ode (ECC). For more information about the spe ifi types
and maximum amount of memory, see “Spe ifi ations” on page 3.
• ntegrated network support
The server omes with an integrated 2-port Gigabit Ethernet ontroller, whi h supports onne tion to a 10
Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 1000 Mbps network. In the initial server onfiguration, Ethernet 1 and Ethernet 2 are
a tivated.
• ntegrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM)
This integrated se urity hip performs ryptographi fun tions and stores private and publi se ure keys.
It provides the hardware support for the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) spe ifi ation. You an
download the software to support the TCG spe ifi ation.
Trusted Platform Module (TPM) has two versions - TPM 1.2 and TPM 2.0. You an hange the TPM
version from 1.2 to 2.0 and ba k again.

Note: For ustomers in Chinese Mainland, a Lenovo-qualified TPM 2.0 adapter or a TPM ard may be
pre-installed.
• Large data-storage capacity and hot-swap capability
The hot-swap server models support a maximum of eight 2.5-in h hot-swap Serial Atta hed SCSI (SAS)
hard disk drives or hot-swap Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drives with two NVMe drives. The simple-swap
server models support a maximum of four 2.5-in h and 3.5-in h simple-swap SATA hard disk drives.
With the hot-swap feature, you an add, remove, or repla e hard disk drives without turning off the server.
• Front operator panel
Front operator panel provides LEDs to help you diagnose problems. For more information about the front
operator panel, see “Front operator panel” on page 16.
• Mobile access to Lenovo Service nformation website
The server provides a QR ode on the system servi e label, whi h is on the over of the server, that you
an s an using a QR ode reader and s anner with a mobile devi e to get qui k a ess to the Lenovo
Servi e Information website. The Lenovo Servi e Information website provides additional information for
parts installation, repla ement videos, and error odes for server support.
• Active Energy Manager
Lenovo XClarity Energy Manager is a power and temperature management solution for data enters. You
an monitor and manage the power onsumption and temperature of Converged, NeXtS ale, System x,
and ThinkServer servers, and improve energy effi ien y using Lenovo XClarity Energy Manager.
• Redundant cooling and optional power capabilities
The server supports a maximum of two 450-watt hot-swap power supplies and four internal fans, whi h
provide redundan y for a typi al onfiguration. The redundant ooling by the fans in the server enables
ontinued operation if one of the fans fails.
• ThinkSystem RA D support
The ThinkSystem RAID adapter provides hardware redundant array of independent disks (RAID) support
to reate onfigurations. The standard RAID adapter provides RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10. An optional
RAID adapter is available for pur hase.

Attention: Airborne parti ulates and rea tive gases a ting alone or in

might pose a risk to the server. For information about the limits for parti ulates and
gases, see “Parti ulate ontamination” in Thin System SR250 Maintenance
Manual.
Particulate contamination
Attention: Airborne parti ulates (in luding metal flakes or parti les) and rea tive gases a ting alone or in
ombination with other environmental fa tors su h as humidity or temperature might pose a risk to the
devi e that is des ribed in this do ument.
Risks that are posed by the presen e of ex essive parti ulate levels or on entrations of harmful gases
in lude damage that might ause the devi e to malfun tion or ease fun tioning altogether. This
spe ifi ation sets forth limits for parti ulates and gases that are intended to avoid su h damage. The limits
must not be viewed or used as definitive limits, be ause numerous other fa tors, su h as temperature or
moisture ontent of the air, an influen e the impa t of parti ulates or environmental orrosives and gaseous
ontaminant transfer. In the absen e of spe ifi limits that are set forth in this do ument, you must
implement pra ti es that maintain parti ulate and gas levels that are onsistent with the prote tion of human
health and safety. If Lenovo determines that the levels of parti ulates or gases in your environment have
aused damage to the devi e, Lenovo may ondition provision of repair or repla ement of devi es or parts
on implementation of appropriate remedial measures to mitigate su h environmental ontamination.
Implementation of su h remedial measures is a ustomer responsibility.

• The opper rea tivity level shall be less than 300 Angstroms per month (Å/month ≈ 0.0039 μg/
m2-hour weight gain).2
• The silver rea tivity level shall be less than 200 Å/month (Å/month ≈ 0.0035 μg/ m2-hour
weight gain).3
• The rea tive monitoring of gaseous orrosivity must be ondu ted approximately 5 m (2 in.) in
front of the ra k on the air inlet side at one-quarter and three-quarter frame height off the floor
or where the air velo ity is mu h higher.
Airborne
parti ulates Data enters must meet the leanliness level of ISO 14644-1 lass 8.
For data enters without airside e onomizer, the ISO 14644-1 lass 8 leanliness might be met by
hoosing one of the following filtration methods:
• The room air might be ontinuously filtered with MERV 8 filters.
• Air entering a data enter might be filtered with MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13 filters.
For data enters with airside e onomizers, the hoi e of filters to a hieve ISO lass 8 leanliness
depends on the spe ifi onditions present at that data enter.
• The deliques ent relative humidity of the parti ulate ontamination should be more than 60%
RH.4
• Data enters must be free of zin whiskers.5

Notes:
1. Most options an be updated through the Lenovo tools. Some options, su h as GPU firmware or Omni-
Path firmware require the use of supplier tools.
2. The server UEFI settings for option ROM must be set to Auto or UEF to update firmware using Lenovo
XClarity Administrator, Lenovo XClarity Essentials, or Lenovo XClarity Controller.
3. Firmware updates are limited to Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager, Lenovo XClarity Controller, and
UEFI updates only. Firmware updates for optional devi es, su h as adapters, are not supported.
4. The server UEFI settings for option ROM must be set to Auto or UEF for detailed adapter ard
information, su h as model name and firmware levels, to be displayed in Lenovo XClarity Administrator,
Lenovo XClarity Controller, or Lenovo XClarity Essentials.
5. Limited inventory.
6. The Lenovo XClarity Integrator deployment he k for System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)
supports Windows operating system deployment.
7. Power management fun tion is supported only by Lenovo XClarity Integrator for VMware vCenter.
8. It is highly re ommended that you he k the power summary data for your server using Lenovo
Capa ity Planner before pur hasing any new parts.

Chapter 2. Server components
Use the information in this se tion to learn about ea h of the omponents asso iated with your server.
dentifying your server
When you onta t Lenovo for help, the ma hine type, model, and serial number information helps support
te hni ians to identify your server and provide faster servi e.
The model number and serial number are on the ID label on the front of the server. The following illustration
shows the lo ation of the ID label ontaining the ma hine type, model, and serial number.

Network access tag
The network a ess tag an be found on the front of the server. You an pull way the network a ess tag to
paste your own label for re ording some information su h as the hostname, the system name and the
inventory bar ode. Please keep the network a ess tag for future referen e.

QR code
In addition, the system Servi e Card that is lo ated on the top over of the server, provides a qui k referen e
(QR) ode for mobile a ess to servi e information. You an s an the QR ode with a mobile devi e using a
QR ode reader appli ation and get qui k a ess to the Servi e Information web page. The Servi e
Information web page provides additional information for parts installation and repla ement videos, and error
odes for server support.
