Inspectingforunsafeconditions
Usethisinformationtohelpyouidentifypotentialunsafeconditionsinadevicethatyouareworkinon.
Eachdevice,asitwasdesinedandmanufactured,hasrequiredsafetyitemstoprotectusersandservice
techniciansfrominjury.Theinformationinthissectionaddressesonlythoseitems.Useoodjudment
toidentifypotentialunsafeconditionsthatmihtbecausedbyunsupportedalterationsorattachmentof
unsupportedfeaturesoroptionaldevicesthatarenotaddressedinthissection.Ifyouidentifyanunsafe
condition,youmustdeterminehowseriousthehazardisandwhetheryoumustcorrecttheproblembefore
youworkontheproduct.
Considerthefollowinconditionsandthesafetyhazardsthattheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower.Primaryvoltaeontheframecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock.
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamaedCRTfaceorabulincapacitor.
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinhardware.
Toinspecttheproductforpotentialunsafeconditions,completethefollowinsteps:
1.Makesurethatthepowerisoffandthepowercordsaredisconnected.
2.Makesurethattheexteriorcoverisnotdamaed,loose,orbroken,andobserveanysharpedes.
3.Checkthepowercords:
•Makesurethatthethird-wireroundconnectorisinoodcondition.Useametertomeasure
third-wireroundcontinuityfor0.1ohmorlessbetweentheexternalroundpinandtheframeround.
•Makesurethatthepowercordsarethecorrecttype.
•Makesurethattheinsulationisnotfrayedorworn.
4.Removethecover.

5.Checkforanyobviousunsupportedalterations.Useoodjudmentastothesafetyofanyunsupported
alterations.
6.Checkinsidethesystemforanyobviousunsafeconditions,suchasmetalfilins,contamination,water
orotherliquid,orsinsoffireorsmokedamae.
7.Checkforworn,frayed,orpinchedcables.
8.Makesurethatthepower-supplycoverfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeenremovedortampered
with.
Guidelinesforservicingelectricalequipment
Observetheseuidelineswhenyouserviceelectricalequipment.
•Checktheareaforelectricalhazardssuchasmoistfloors,nonroundedpowerextensioncords,and
missinsafetyrounds.
•Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlesthatarecoveredwithasoft
materialthatdoesnotprovideinsulationfromliveelectricalcurrent.
•Reularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition.Donotuse
wornorbrokentoolsortesters.
•Donottouchthereflectivesurfaceofadentalmirrortoaliveelectricalcircuit.Thesurfaceisconductive
andcancausepersonalinjuryorequipmentdamaeifittouchesaliveelectricalcircuit.
•Somerubberfloormatscontainsmallconductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischare.Donotuse
thistypeofmattoprotectyourselffromelectricalshock.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltaes.
•Locatetheemerencypower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectinswitch,orelectricaloutletsothatyoucan
turnoffthepowerquicklyintheeventofanelectricalaccident.
•Disconnectallpowerbeforeyouperformamechanicalinspection,worknearpowersupplies,orremove
orinstallmainunits.
•Beforeyouworkontheequipment,disconnectthepowercord.Ifyoucannotdisconnectthepower
cord,havethecustomerpower-offthewallboxthatsuppliespowertotheequipmentandlockthe
wallboxintheoffposition.
•Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit.Checkittomakesurethatithasbeen
disconnected.
•Ifyouhavetoworkonequipmentthathasexposedelectricalcircuits,observethefollowinprecautions:
–Makesurethatanotherpersonwhoisfamiliarwiththepower-offcontrolsisnearyouandisavailableto
turnoffthepowerifnecessary.
–Whenyouworkwithpowered-onelectricalequipment,useonlyonehand.Keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourbacktoavoidcreatinacompletecircuitthatcouldcauseanelectricalshock.
–Whenyouuseatester,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessories
forthattester.
–Standonasuitablerubbermattoinsulateyoufromroundssuchasmetalfloorstripsandequipment
frames.
•Useextremecarewhenyoumeasurehihvoltaes.
•Toensureproperroundinofcomponentssuchaspowersupplies,pumps,blowers,fans,andmotor
