Troubleshoot a screen that isn't working
correctly
If your Android phone or tablet's screen isn't responding, or if you're seeing flickering, jumping,
flashing, dead pixels or a blank screen, try these quick fixes and troubleshooting steps.
After trying each recommended solution, check to see whether it fixed your issue.
Step 1: Check your device's screen
1. Make sure that your screen isn't cracked, chipped or damaged.
2. If you have a case or screen protector, take it off.
3. If you're wearing gloves, take them off.
4. If you've put any stickers over the screen or sensors, peel them off.
5. Make sure that your screen is clean.
Step 2: Try these troubleshooting steps
If none of the quick checks above worked, try the troubleshooting steps below.
Restarting your device
To restart your phone or tablet, press your device's Power button for about 30 seconds, until
your device restarts.
Rebooting your device gives it a fresh start. Sometimes, that's all you need to fix an issue.
If your touchscreen is still completely unresponsive after restarting your device, you can find out
how to reset your device to factory settings (below).
See whether an app is causing the problem
The problem may be caused by an app that you downloaded. To see whether a downloaded app
is causing the problem, you can reboot your device in safe mode.

1. Turn on safe mode.
2. Once you're in safe mode, touch the screen.
oIf your screen works in safe mode, a downloaded app is most likely causing
your issue.
1. Restart your device to exit safe mode.
2. To find the app that’s causing issues, uninstall recently downloaded apps
one by one.
3. After you remove the app that's causing the problem, you can re-install the
other apps that you removed.
oIf your screen doesn't work in safe mode, continue to the next section.
Test the affected part of your screen
If the issue happens only sometimes, or only on a specific part of the screen, you can use the
notification shade to confirm. The notification shade is the panel that you can swipe down from
the top of your screen.
1. Touch the top left corner of the screen.
2. Slowly drag your finger to the bottom right corner without lifting. Try to move your
finger slowly enough so that you can count to 10 before reaching the opposite corner of
the screen.
oIf you can drag the notification shade all the way to the bottom of the screen
The problem isn't caused by a specific area on your screen. You can find out how
to reset your device to factory settings (below).
oIf the notification shade releases while you're still dragging your finger
across the screen
Repeat the test. If the notification shade releases again, note whether it happened
in the same place on the screen.
If your device is a Pixel phone, find out how to get help.
For other devices, please contact your device manufacturer.
Turn off developer options
If you have developer options turned on, those developer settings could be affecting your
touchscreen performance.

1. Open your device's Settings app .
2. Under "System", tap Developer options. You'll see this only if you have developer
options turned on.
3. Tap the On/Off switch.
Troubleshoot Wi-Fi network connections
If you're having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi –for example, the Wi-Fi icon on your device's
screen is orange or has an exclamation point –try the solutions below.
After each step, try connecting to the Wi-Fi network again by opening a web page on your
mobile browser.
Note: Android isn't the same on all devices. These instructions are for devices running Android
7.1 and up. Find out how to check your Android version.
Step 1: Check your settings and restart

again to reconnect.

restarts. Restarting gives your device a fresh start. Sometimes, that's all you need to fix an
issue.
Step 2: Check the source of the problem
Device problems

phone. If other devices can use the network, the problem is most likely specific to your device.
Network problems
Check whether your device can connect to another Wi-Fi network, such as at a friend's house or
a public network. If your device can connect elsewhere, the problem is most likely specific to the
network.
Internet problems

Troubleshoot network and Internet problems
Restart the Wi-Fi router and modem
If you have access to the router or modem, try turning it off and then on again.
1. Unplug the router and modem's power cords from the power outlet for 15 seconds.
2. Plug the power cords back in.

manual, there may be an issue with the modem, router or Internet connection.
Contact the network administrator or your Internet Service Provider to see if they can resolve
this issue. For example, there might be a service outage or they might need to reset your Internet
connection.
To connect to a public network, sign in
Public networks, for example at cafes or aeroports, often have a log in or authentication page that
you must complete in order to use that network. If you don't sign in or accept the terms on that
page, the public Internet connection won't work.
If you see an authentication page on your device, sign in or accept the terms to get on
that network.
If you don't see this page after you connect to the public network:
To check for a notification that asks you to sign in to the Wi-Fi network, swipe down from the
top of your device's screen.
To see whether the authentication page will come up, open a new browser window and try to
load a website.
If that doesn't work, try re-establishing your connection to the network:
1. Open your device’s Settings app .
2. Tap Wi-Fi.
3. Tap the name of the network. Then tap Forget.
4. At the top of the screen, tap to switch Wi-Fi Off. Then tap again to switch it back On.
5. On the list, tap the network name.
6. You should get a notification to sign in to the network. To bring up the authentication page on
your device, tap the notification.
7. To connect to the network, accept the terms.
Reset all network settings

To reset all your network settings:
1. Open your device’s Settings app .
2. Under "Wireless & networks", tap More.
3. Tap Network settings reset.
4. At the bottom, tap Reset settings.
Troubleshoot creating a Wi-Fi hotspot
Make sure that "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" is on

2. Under "Wireless & networks", tap More Tethering & portable hotspot.
3. Tap Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to switch it on.
oIf it was already on, switch it off and then on again.
oIf your device has never before had a portable hotspot, first tap Set up Wi-Fi hotspot.
You can find out more about tethering with Wi-Fi hotspots, Bluetooth or USB.
Contact your mobile operator
Not all mobile service providers support mobile hotspots.
If you have issues, check with your operator to see whether your device can connect to mobile
hotspots and whether they're in your data plan.
When you reconnect
When you reconnect, check for the latest system update. Updates may bring improvements that
can help fix device issues.
You can also find out how to change your advanced Wi-Fi settings.
