OVERVIEW
The Logan Series 70 Short Catch Over-
shot is designed for conditions when the
fish is too short to be engaged with a
standard overshot. The grapple control is
positioned above the basket grapple rath-
er than below it to allow the basket grap-
ple to occupy the lowest position in the
bowl. This enables the overshot to firmly
engage and retrieve a very short fish.
CONSTRUCTION
The Logan Series 70 Short Catch Over-
shot assembly consists of a top sub,
bowl, basket grapple control, and
a basket grapple. This overshot has no
guide. The basket grapple is inserted
into the bowl from the top. The design
of the bowl allows the basket grapple
to fit in the lowest position. The basket
grapple control finger then fits into the
top of the basket grapple.
OPERATION
Before making up the overshot on the
fishing string and running it into the
well, be sure the overshot is properly
assembled and dressed with the proper
size grapple. Each Logan Series 70
Short Catch Overshot is designed to
engage a specific maximum outside
diameter. Each overshot can be dressed
to engage any smaller diameter by
installing the desired size of basket
grapple. Refer to the Parts Lists on pages
3 – 4.
Check to make sure all of the compo-
nents are in good working order. Make
up the overshot on the fishing string and
run it into the well. Although the Series
70 Overshot has no guide, the compo-
nents function in the same manner as
the standard Logan Series 150 Releas-
ing and Circulating Overshot.
When the overshot reaches the top of
the fish, combined rotation and lowering
results in the following:
1. Because this overshot has no guide,
the bottom of the bowl directs the
fish into basket grapple.
2. The grapple expands and the fish
passes into it until it reaches the pin
section of the top sub or the stop of
a basket grapple.
3. The fish is now properly positioned
in the overshot. The tapers of the
bowl will contract the grapple and
securely hold the fish when upward
pull is exerted on the string.
A sharp downward bump positions
the largest portion of the bowl tapers
opposite the grapple and breaks the
hold between the bowl and grapple.
Right-hand rotation expands the
left-hand wickers in the grapple and
the overshot can then be withdrawn
from the fish by elevating the fishing
string.
CATCHING A FISH
Attach the Overshot to the bottom end
of the fishing string and run it into the
hole. The Logan Series 70 Overshot
assembly is rotated to the right and low-
ered as the fish enters the expand-able
grapple. Simultaneous rotating and
lowering is important. With the fish in
the grapple, stop right-hand rotation
and allow the torque to slack out on the
fishing string. Exert an upward pull to
fully capture the fish.
RELEASING A FISH
A sharp downward force (bump) is
applied to the overshot to break the hold
of the grapple within the bowl. The over-
shot is then rotated to the right while it
is slowly elevated to release the grapple
from the fish until the overshot is clear
of the fish. Simultaneous rotation and
elevation is important.
To release from a recovered fish, follow
the same procedure while holding the
fish below the overshot.
PRECAUTIONS
Never rotate the fishing string to the
left while the overshot is engaged with
the fish unless an upward strain is
maintained.
Always bump down the full weight of
the fishing string before starting re-
leas-ing operations.
MAINTENANCE
Maintenance is simple, but important
to prolong the life of the tool and guard
against misruns. Disassemble and
inspect the tool after each use. Check
the grapple wickers for dullness and
replace if necessary. Make other repairs
as required and reassemble.
Paint or grease the exterior of the over-
shot to prevent rust or deterioration.
Disassembly
1. Using a vise, clamp the bowl be-
tween the threaded ends. Remove
the top sub by breaking loose the
threaded connections between the
top sub and bowl.
CAUTION:
Excessive force can
distort or crack the bowl. Use only
enough gripping action in the vise
to break the connections. Avoid mak-
ing heavy tool marks on the bowl.
2. The control must first be lifted out
through the top of the assembly.
Using right-hand rotation, unscrew
and remove the grapple from the bowl.
Before reassembly, inspect all parts,
especially the grapple. Check the
wickers for damage and wear to
ensure safe operation. Grease parts
as they are reassembled. Grease or
paint the exterior to prevent corrosion.

Notes:
1) All strengths are calculated theoretical yield points and are accurate within 20%. All strengths assume a straight, steady pull and
full grapple engagement of a round fish. Anything less than straight pulling or full engagement will substantially reduce the strength.
2) No tong marks should be applied to the bowl. Tong marks and other surface damage to the bowl will also reduce the strength.
3) Maximum recommended makeup torque is 50% of yield. Less torque may be used depending upon the situation.
4) Jarring may amplify the pull load by a factor of 3 to 10.

OVERVIEW
The Logan Series 150 Releasing and Cir-
culating Overshot is the most versa-tile
and commonly used fishing tool in the
industry. It is designed to externally
engage, pack-o, retrieve, and release
various types of fish, including tubing,
casing, drill pipe, drill collars, couplings,
and tool joints that have been lost or
twisted o. It is engineered to withstand
heavy pulling, torsional and jarring
strains without damaging or distorting
the tool or the fish. Its rugged construc-
tion, simplicity, and strength make the
Logan Series 150 Releasing and Cir-
cu-lating Overshot the standard choice
among all external catch fishing tools.
USE
The Logan Series 150 Releasing and
Circulating Overshot is designed to
ex-ternally engage, pack-o, retrieve,
and release various types of fish, includ-
ing tubing, casing, drill pipe, drill collars,
couplings, and tool joints that have been
twisted o or lost.
Each overshot is designed to engage,
pack-o, and pull a specific size of
tubing, casing, drill pipe, drill collars,
couplings, and tool joints, or other tools
with smooth outer diameters. With the
installation of proper undersize parts,
they may be adapted to engage and
pack-o smaller sizes.
Logan Overshots are coded (A – E) with
the following strength designations:
• A = Full Strength (FS)
For all torsional pulling and jarring
strain
• B = Extra Full Strength (XFS)
For extreme abuse
• C = Semi Full Strength (SFS)
Maximum strength for special hole
conditions
• D = Slim Hole (SH)
For heavy pulling strains only
• E = Extra Slim Hole (XSH)
For pick up jobs only
Type A (full strength) overshots are rec-
ommended when casing, hole size, and
fish size will permit.
CONSTRUCTION
The Logan Series 150 Releasing and
Circulating Overshots are constructed of
the highest quality material for strength
and eiciency.
Overshots consist of three main ex-
ter-nal parts: a top sub, a bowl, and a
guide. Internal catch and pack-o parts
are determined by the diameter of the
fish. Each assembly is designed for a
maximum catch diameter. A spiral grap-
ple, spiral grapple control, and a Type
A packer are used in the overshot bowl
when the diameter of the fish is near the
published maximum catch diameter of
the overshot.
When the diameter of the fish is
con-siderably below the maximum catch
diameter of the overshot (usually 1/2"),
a basket grapple, a mill control packer,
or basket grapple control are used in the
overshot bowl.
COMPONENTS
Gripping and Releasing Mechanism
Top Sub
The top sub is the uppermost com-
ponent of the overshot assembly. It is
equipped with a customer specified box
connection to assure proper make-up
with the fishing string.
Bowl
The bowl, the major working component
of the overshot, is located between the
top sub and the guide.
The inside diameter features a threaded
section that conforms to the exterior
threads of the grapple. This design
permits any expansion or compression
strain to be evenly distributed over the
entire working surface of the bowl, grap-
ple, and the fish. Any possible damage
to the fish or overshot is minimized.
Guide
The lowermost component of the over-
shot assembly is the guide. As its name
implies, it guides the fish into the in-
ter-nal gripping mechanism (grapple) of
the overshot. The guide also minimizes
possible damage to the overshot by
blocking the entry of a fish that exceeds
the maximum catch size of the overshot.
Grapples
The grapple fits into the bowl and is the
gripping mechanism of the overshot.
There are two basic types of grapples:
spiral and basket.

Spiral Grapple
Spiral Grapple
The left-handed, helix shape of the
spiral grapple conforms to the tapered
interior wickers of the bowl. The specially
hardened interior wickers of the grapple
assure positive engagement with the fish.
Basket Grapple
Basket Grapple
The basket grapple is a slotted, ex-
pand-able cylinder with a wickered
interior
to engage the fish. Its tapered exterior
conforms to the interior of the bowl.
To meet the needs of various fishing op-
erations, three types of basket grap-ples
are available: plain (standard), short-
catch stop, and long-catch stop.
Plain Basket Grapple
The plain basket grapple is used when
the milling operation has preceeded the
fishing operation. This type of basket
grapple is used to retrieve fish with a
uniform outside diameter. During fishing
operations, the fish passes completely
through the grapple. Wickers running
the entire interior length of the grapple
securely grip the fish. The plain basket
grapple is standard equipment on all
overshots and will always be furnished
unless another type is specified.
Basket Grapple with Short-Catch Stop
Basket Grapple
with Short-Catch Stop
This grapple is used to retrieve couplings
that are attached to a ruptured section of
pipe that protrudes above the coupling.
Two sets of wickers, each with a dierent
inside diameter, are utilized. The smaller
diameter threads catch the pipe above
the collar and provide a stop so that the
coupling can be engaged by the larger
set of threads before being packed-o by
a control packer.
Basket Grapple with Long-Catch Stop
Basket Grapple
with Long-Catch Stop
This type of basket grapple is designed
to retrieve tool joints and collars with
suicient length remaining below the
grapple to allow pack-o with a plain
or mill control packer. The internal
shoulder at the upper end of the grap-
ple prevents the fish from completely
passing through it. This shoulder also
positions the basket control packer
around the fish for optimum pack-o.
Spiral Grapple Control
Basket Grapple Control
Grapple Controls
A grapple control acts as a key that
transmits torque from the overshot bowl
to the grapple while allowing the grapple
to move vertically inside the bowl during
operation. There are two types of grapple
controls: spiral and basket. Spiral grapple
controls are used with spiral grapples and
are always plain — that is, without milling
teeth or pack-o mechanism. Basket
grapple controls are used with basket
grapples. These may be plain, include a
pack-o mechanism, and/or milling teeth.
Pack-o Mechanism
If circulation is required during the
fishing operation, a pack-o mechanism
is required to assure circulation goes
through rather than around the fish. The
type of grapple (spiral or basket) being
used will determine which type of pack-
o mechanism is used.
Type A Packer
Type A Packer
A Type A packer is used on overshots
equipped with spiral grapples. The Type
A packer sleeve seals its outer diameter
against the inside of the bowl. It has an
internal lip that seals around the fish.
Each Type A packer is designed to pack-
o the specific catch size of each spiral
grapple and one should be ordered for
each size grapple.

Mill Control Packer
Mill Control Packers
A mill control packer is used in con-
junction with overshots equipped with
a basket grapple and should be used
when the fish requires light dressing
prior to engagement. A basket grapple
control is used when the fish requires no
pack-o. Mill control packers replace a
plain basket grapple control. The teeth
on the mill control packer are designed
only to remove small burrs.
Only one mill control packer can be in-
stalled in the overshot assembly at one
time. Mill control packers are manufac-
tured to match a specific basket grapple
size. One mill control packer should be
ordered for each size of basket grapple
that has been ordered.
For areas with extreme pressure, refer
to the special Logan Series 150 High
Pressure Mill Control Packers and High
Pressure Pack-o Assemblies listed on
pages 40 – 41 for more information.
Type R Mill Control Packer
When an overshot is dressed with a mill
control packer and pack-o is required,
a Type R Mill Control Packer is most
commonly used. The mill control packer
is constructed with a molded inner seal
and a replaceable outer seal that pro-vi-
de a positive seal around the fish. Seals
may be replaced in the field if required.
(Refer to pages 34 – 37 for Inner and
Outer Seal part numbers.)
Inner Seal
Outer Seal
The plain control packer is used when
the milling operation has preceeded the
fishing operation. The mill control packer
should be used when the fish requires
light dressing prior to engagement. Only
one control packer can be installed in
the overshot assembly at one time.
Type E Control Packer
The Type E Control Packer is con-struct-
ed with a molded inner seal and
a replaceable outer seal. They are avail-
able in two styles: plain and mill.
Outer seals may be replaced in the field.
(Refer to pages 36 – 37 for Outer Seal
part numbers.)

cu-lating Overshots can be equipped
with a wide range of accessories,

Refer to the pages indicated for more
detailed information about these parts.
OPERATION
Properly assemble the overshot and
dress it with the correct size grapple.
Ensure that all parts are in good, work-
ing condition.
In fishing operations, the Logan Series
150 Releasing and Circulating Overshot
will function in the same manner, wheth-
er using a spiral or basket grapple.
Install undersized parts if the fish is
smaller than the maximum outside
di-ameter the overshot can engage.
(Refer to tables on pages 13 – 29.)
In hole sizes that are significantly larger
than the fish size, install an oversized
guide (refer to page 31) or a wallhook
guide (refer to page 32) to prevent the
overshot from passing the fish.
Replace the standard guide with the
proper mill guide if the top of the fish
is heavily burred or jagged. (Refer to Mill
Guides on page 33.)
If the upper end of the fish is unen-
gage-able, install an extension sub (refer
to page 30) between the top sub and the
bowl.
Connect the overshot to the fishing
string by the top sub and run it into the
hole.
The Logan Series 150 Releasing and
Circulating Overshot requires right-
hand rotation only, during both engag-
ing and releasing operations. The right-
hand-only rotation feature eliminates
the possibility of accidental left-hand
unthreading.
Catching a Fish
CAUTION:
Always shut o the circu-
lating pumps before lowering the
overshot over the fish.
Never rotate the fishing string to the
left while the overshot is engaged
with a fish unless an upward strain is
maintained.

Slowly rotate the Logan Series 150
Releasing and Circulating Overshot
assembly to the right while it is lowered
over the fish. It is important to combine
rotation and lowering after the overshot
has reached the top of the fish and as
the fish enters the expandable grap-
ple. The guide will direct the fish into
the overshot. The grapple will expand,
allowing the fish to pass through it and
the pack-o rubber. The fish will stop
when it makes contact with the pin end
of the top sub. If engaging an external
upset section with a basket grapple, the
fish will be stopped by the solid metal
stop in the upper end of the basket
grapple. With the fish properly posi-
tioned in the grapple, allow the right-
hand twist to slack out of the string.
Cease rotation and exert an upward
pull on the fishing string to fully capture
the fish. The upward pull contracts the ta-
pers in the bowl, thereby gripping the fish
with the grapple and holding it secure.
If the fish does not advance, maintain
an upward strain on the fishing string
and turn on the circulating pumps to
force fluid through the fish. With the fish
securely positioned, circulation seals
the pack-o rubber around the fish to
prevent fluid from passing down the
outside. The pumps build pressure to
force fluid down through the fish.
Releasing a Fish
CAUTION: Before beginning releasing
operations, always bump down the full
weight of the fishing string.
A sharp downward force (bump) is
applied to break the hold of the grapple
within the bowl. The downward force
positions the largest portion of the bowl
tapers opposite the grapple and breaks
the hold. The Logan Series 150 Releas-
ing and Circulating Overshot is then
rotated to the right and slowly elevated
to release the grapple from the fish.
As the overshot rotates to the right, the
friction of the fish against the grapple
causes it to unwind and expand. Con-
tinue simultaneous right-hand rotation
while slowly elevating the fishing string
until the overshot has cleared the fish.
Combined rotation and elevation is very
important.
Undersized Spiral Parts
When a fish is smaller than the specified
maximum catch size of the overshot,
undersized parts are used.
Undersized spiral parts (spiral grapples
and Type A packers) are used to catch
fish sizes between the “Maximum Catch
Size (Spiral)” to the “Maximum Catch
Size (Basket).” (Refer to tables on pages
13 – 29.)
Spiral grapples and type A packers
should be changed for each size of fish.
They will eectively catch and pack-o
a worn fish as much as 3/32" under, and
approximately 1/32" over, the catch size
of the grapple.
Some overshots, especially Innovex
code “D” slim hole (SH) type over-shots,
can eectively catch a fish that
is no more than 1/16" under maximum.
Undersized Basket Parts
Undersized basket parts (basket grap-
ples and mill control packers) are used
to catch sizes smaller than the “Max-
imum Catch Size (Basket).” (Refer to
tables on pages 13 – 29.) Basket grap-
ples will eectively catch and pack-o a
worn fish as much as 3/32" under, and
approximately 1/32" over, the maximum
catch sizes listed.
Some overshots, especially Innovex
code “D” slim hole (SH) type over-shots,
can eectively catch a fish that
is more than 1/32" under size.
Basket grapples and mill control pack-
ers should be changed for each size
of fish. A plain basket grapple control
does not need to be changed to a mill
control packer when using an under-
sized basket grapple.
Subsea Retrieval
On oshore floating rigs, drill string
extends hundreds of feet from the rig
to the wellhead blowout preventer
(BOP) on the sea floor. Sometimes it
is necessary for the rig to move (in the
event of a blowout, an approaching
storm, or drifting due to loss of anchor)
from a well site. In these situations, the
drill string can be temporarily severed
inside the BOP to remove only the upper
end.
The BOP must have at least two sets
of rams — a set of lower pipe rams and
set of shear rams above them. Land the
closest tool joint on the lower pipe rams.
Close the lower pipe rams to suspend
and pack-o the string before shearing.
Shearing produces flattened, flared ends
with protruding ears.
The string is retrieved when the rig re-
turns to the well site. The end is brought
to the surface and the sheared piece is
removed. Often large sections of the BOP
stack must be brought to the surface as
well for eective retrieval, making subsea
sheared pipe retrieval a costly, diicult,
and time-consuming task.
By removing the standard guide, grap-
ple, and packer, the Logan Series 150
Releasing and Circulating Overshot
can be dressed with a mill extension
and special flat-bottomed guides (refer
to Mill Guides on page 33) to retrieve
sheared pipe in an economical, simple,
and time-saving manner.
Before installing the overshot on the drill
string, dress it with a mill extension and
a flat-bottomed, long guide. The tapered
milling ribs of the mill extension are
faced with sintered tungsten carbide on
the inner diameter. The overshot is then
lowered into the BOP and over the end
of the drill pipe. Rotation mills down the
flared ends and protruding ears of the
sheared pipe. The end of the long guide
(and the short guide) is faced with soft
metal so it will not damage the BOP
pipe rams if it inadvertently comes into
contact with them.

Sheared Drill Pipe Retrieval
The Series 150 Overshot outfitted with a basket
grapple, mill control packer, top sub extension,
and a special short guide with a soft metal
bottom.
SHEARED DRILL PIPE RETRIEVAL
The long length of the guide also pre-
vents the mill extension from touching
and causing damage to the tool joint in
the BOP. This is of utmost importance as
the outer diameter of this joint is where
the string will be engaged.
After milling is completed, The Logan
Series 150 Releasing and Circulating
Overshot is elevated to the surface. It
is then dressed with a flat-bottomed
short guide, an extension sub, a basket
grapple, and a mill control packer sized
to engage the tool joint. The overshot is
lowered again. As the BOP is entered,
the milled flare-end will pass through
the grapple and the mill control packer.
Once in the extension sub, the grapple
will engage and pack-o the tool joint.
Exert an upward pull on the overshot
to ensure enagement. Then retract the
BOP pipe rams. Raise the string to the
rig floor and remove the severed joint.
Replace the joint and resume normal
operations.
Logan Sheared Pipe Retrieval Overshot
assemblies are available for all sizes
of drill pipe and BOPs. Please inquire.
