1.1 General Information
The following document contains a rocedure for connecting the Lumistar LS-28M device to an
Ethernet control and status network. The manual will cover the following to ics:
1.) The mechanical interfaces and interconnects to the LS-28M device.
2.) The installation of the su lied LS28A user software a lication.
3.) The setu and modification of the Lumistar LS-28M device network interface configuration.
4.) The connection of the device in a Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 10 firewall environment.
5.) A general overview of the LS28A User GUI o erations.
This manual is limited in sco e to the configuration of the modular unit in a “standalone” configuration
and does not take into account integrated and delivered systems that contain LS-28M devices as core
receiving elements. Manuals relating s ecifically to network configurations on integrated systems will
be included with the associated deliveries.

1.2 Mechanical Information
Figure 1-1 below shows the mechanical outline and foot rint of the LS-28M modular receiver unit. The
unit’s weight is a roximately 1.9 ounds (0.86 kg). The unit rovides free-fit #6 clearance holes at
each corner for mounting.

1.3 Electrical and Thermal Information
The LS-28M unit can be owered via a single su ly between 9 and 42VDC. It is recommended that the
unit be owered from sources in the 18-32VDC for o timal current voltage load balancing. Caution

should be used in roviding a ro riate cabling to the device for current handling. The ower
interface rovides three ower ins as well as three ower returns.
All six power related pins should be utilized to ensure proper current provisions for the Micro-D
contact ratings.
The LS-28M ower consum tion is o tion and mode de endent but varies between a roximately 40
and 60 watts. Pressurized cooling should be used to dissi ate the device heat load which is rimarily
assed to the sides of the modular ackage.
Insufficient cooling provisions can damage or destroy the unit. Ensure that there is proper
airflow to the device and monitor the unit temperature via the LS28App User GUI on the INFO
tab. Sufficient airflow should be provided to keep the unit below 65 degrees Celsius.
1.4 Cable interfaces
The LS-28M unit is delivered with 6 cable assemblies, one for each of its front anel Micro-DSub
interfaces. Figure 1-2 illustrates the front IO anel connection ma of the unit. Figures 1-3 thru 1-8
de ict the cables rovides and their associated in-outs. SMA connectors are rovided for the RF
in uts and SMB connectors are rovided for IF signal out uts as well as the reference clock in uts.

2.2 LS28App Network/Interface Information
The LS-28M device receives controls and status by serial interface methods only. This includes RS-232,
USB 2.0, and 10/100/1000Mb s Ethernet.
Utilizing the RS-232 and USB 2.0 interfaces, all device controls are rovided to the user but only critical
status values are returned to the user. Gra hical dis lay com onents such as s ectral dis lays,
baseband eye atterns, and IQ constellation dis lays exceed the bandwidth ca acity and real-time
o erational as ects of the slower serial interface formats and thus are disabled. The 10/100/1000Mb s
Ethernet interface rovides all dynamic and static dis lays in addition to all standard controls as well as
o tional streaming data out ut ca abilities.
The interface for general controls and status on the Ethernet network utilizes both TCP and UDP
rotocols through one of sixteen orts. The resent evolution of device software is designed for
Unicast mode and thus there is only one controlling agent on a given network. TCP is utilized for
controls and high-level status. UDP orts are utilized for a number of status and data functions. These
include:
1.) S ectral Dis lay Data Packets
2.) Signal Baseband Eye Pattern Data Packets
3.) Signal IQ Constellation Data Packets
4.) Streaming Data Sources (o tional)
5.) Test Data Packets (factory use)
By default, the factory defined ort socket assignments of the LS-28M are as follows:

5011 UDP Out ut Eye Pattern Packet Data – Channel 2
5012 UDP Out ut Eye Pattern Packet Data – Combiner
5016 TCP Bidirectional Command and Status
UDP data that is streamed from the device to the dis lay a lication requires a “kee -alive”
command/res onse via the TCP socket. This rotection technique is a means of reventing the device
from continuously s awning UDP traffic on a network in the absence of the control a lication. Thus, if
the controlling host is either offline, or has closed the a lication unex ectedly, the UDP traffic from the
LS-28M will continue to be delivered for a eriod of a roximately 90-120 seconds. If after that time-
out eriod, no host communications is established, the UDP sockets will closed automatically. They
may be re-established by restarting the LS-28M a lication.
The LS-28M isdelivered configured with a StaticIP Address. The default address is 192.168.16.220.If
the user desires that the unit be switched to a different static IP address or to Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) mode, a controlling host set to the same sub-net mask will be
requiredalong with a network switch with two available orts (or a cross-over cable) to form
connections between the host and the device.
If the user wishes to have the device delivered with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
enabled, contact sales rior to delivery for s ecific assignments. In DHCP mode, a DHCP IP address
service is required on the attached network to assign an IP address to the device.
Configuring hosts communication between various network configurations is o erating system
de endent and is beyond the sco e of this manual. However, an exam le of how to configure a
common Windows network Host Controller to o erate in either Static or DHCP modes is described in
sections 2.2.1 and 2.22 res ectively.
NOTICE: Network configuration, connection and security typically require consent and access privileges
from a network system administrator. The sections that follow attempt to describe the necessary steps
that need to be taken in a rather “ pen” network environment. Specific requirements in terms of network
security and connection routing are the user’s responsibility. Please contact your system administrator
before going further.

2.2.1 Modification of a Windows Hostcontroller to Static IP mode
To modify the controlling host’s network configuration to static IP mode, erform the following ste s:
Ste 1: Connect the LS-28M to the target host machine either directly with a Ethernet crossover cable
or by connecting both the device and the host to an Ethernet switch using standard Ethernet cables.
Ste 2: On the target host a lication machine, access the Windows Control Panel.
Ste 3: From Windows Control Panel, select the Network and Sharing Center.
Ste 4: From Network and Sharing Center, select the “Change ada ter settings” o tion from the left-
hand menu.
Ste 5: The Network Connections window shows the available connections the target host can use.
Right-click on the local area connection that is connected to the LS-28M and select “Pro erties”.

Ste 6: From the Local Area connection Pro erties window, double-click on “Internet Protocol Version
4 (TCP/IPv4)”.
Ste 7: To set the unit to a static IP address, select the “Use the following IP address:” o tion. Then
enter the desired IP address in the designated field. A suggestion is to use the IP address
192.168.16.200 as shown below. Once the IP address is filled, the Subnet mask field will automatically
o ulate.
WARNING: The static IP address of the host machine cannot be identical to any device on the
connected network.
