1Introduction
1.1 General
The following document contains information on the Lumistar LS-28-DRSM multi-mode modular receiver
roduct designed and manufactured by Lumistar Inc. The intent is to familiarize the user with the device’s
mechanical, electrical, and interconnection as ects as well as introduce and train the user in the
o erations of the su lied software control a lications rovided as art of the device delivery.
This document is not intended to define and illustrate the detailed communications rotocol of the LS-28-
DRSM necessary for inde endent software develo ment. This information can be found in the device
Interface Control Document (ICD). The document number is ICD-28M-01-001-xx where the –xx is the
documentation revision number.
Consult the web site for the most recent release of all related roduct documentation.
1.2 Document Outline
This document contains the following sections:
Section 1 rovides a document overview as well as a brief on the LS-28-DRSM design
Section 2 rovides information on the hardware interfaces of the device
Section 3 rovides information related to the device communications interfaces
Section 4 rovides documentation of the LS28M Network Interface User A lication
Section 5 rovides documentation of the LS28M Serial User A lication
The document will occasionally utilize document flags to highlight im ortant factors. These flags can
a ear in any location and relate to any to ic. A document flag will always be laced in close roximity to
ertinent information. Document flag exam les a ear in Figure 1-1.

User Datagram Protocol (RFC 768)
1.4 Device Brief
The LS-28-DRSM is a so histicated data receiver that includes all the traditional functions of a full rack
mount telemetry rocessing station in the a roximate foot rint of a 3 ½ inch PC hard drive. Standard
ca abilities include two inde endent digital multi-band RF receiver channels, each su orting multi le
digital demodulation formats, bit synchronization, forward error correction, data recording,
decommutation, gra hical dis lays, baseband data acquisition, and Ethernet data distribution. The
flexibility of the design architecture allows ada tability too many other a lications, such as S ectrum
Monitoring, Command Verification Receivers, and traditional Data Acquisition a lications with minor
modifications to the device’s firmware ersonality. A general LS-28-DRSM block diagram is shown in
Figure 1-2.

Some of the rimary design objectives of the LS-28-DRSM roduct line were to reduce the latform size,
to rovide an “OS-less” environment by eliminating roduct use of commercial software o erating
systems for functional rocessing, to rovide easy and flexible field u grade/enhancements ca abilities,
and to rovide a network a liance for device control and data trans ort. The unit is controlled and
monitored using a 1000/100/10Mb s Ethernet interface with alternate controls being rovided by USB
and RS-232. Using rovided documentation of several sources, the customer can develo their own
interface GUI, our chose to utilize the rovided Lumistar network a lication.
At the heart of the modular design is a flexible and extensible multi-core DSP Engine that can take on u
to twelve “ ersonalities”. The device construction is via u to four hardware “slices”: RF, IF, Signal
Processing and a Control Processing Engine. The slices can be configured as a whole set or as a subset to
erform targeted functionality. O erational firmware loads, or “ ersonalities”, are retained internal to the
device for quick switching between o erational requirements. New firmware ersonalities and/or control
rocessing revisions are easily u dated in the field. No need to return the unit for most modifications.
When configured as a traditional Range Telemetry Receiver/Combiner, the LS-28-DRSM is ca able of
handling u to six frequency bands er channel anywhere from 70 MHz to 7 GHz. All standard RF receiver
functions, such as antenna tracking using AM demodulation and AGC feedback, downconversion, diversity
combining, multi-mode demodulation, bit synchronization, IQ video out ut, Eb/No monitoring, S ectral
and Constellation dis lays with other data quality indicators are rovided. Various non-standard o tions
include the addition of u to 64 GB er channel data recording at the bit level and UDP data broadcasting
of the received telemetry. The receiver can be configured to su ort Multi-symbol PCM/FM, SOQPSK,

GMSK, Analog FM Video with or without NTSC de-em hasis, BPSK, QPSK, OQPSK, AUQPSK, PCM/PM, and
Multi-H CPM. Data rate su ort is u to 60 Mb s. The unit has a very flexible and useful internal Data/IF
Modulator and Bit Error Reader/Frame Synchronizer Lock indicator for use in system Loo -Back Tests. The
unit constantly erforms maintenance monitoring of various environmental arameters and alert the user
to out of boundary conditions. The software logs the user settings and im ortant receiver erformance
arameters as a function of time.
If the User wants to convert from receiver mode to a dual channel bit synchronizer ersonality, that
change can be commanded via software. The unit will be converted to a dual-channel bit sync while the
GUI is transformed for that o erational mode. The bit sync function can o erate to 30 Mb s and rovides
numerous o tions for PCM code conversion.
The LS-28-DRSM rovides the ca ability to decommutate the data from any in ut source (RF, IF,
baseband). The framed data is then broadcast via UDP ackets. These ackets can be brought in via a
network “Auxiliary In ut” to the Lumistar Data Processing Software (LDPS) suite of tools for real time
dis lay, archive, layback and simulation of flight test data. A diagram illustrating the use of an LS-28-
DRSM in a network configuration is shown in Figure 1-3.
Figure 1-3 The LS-28-DRSM as art of a network data distribution design
The LS-28-DRSM is ca able of handling many modern coding and digital link enhancement schemes,
such as Viterbi, Reed-Solomon, LDPC, S ace Time Coding, and Ada tive Equalization. Each of these has its
own s ecial niche, a lications and merits (as well as demerits) in modern Telemetry Flight Test and S ace
Telemetry A lications.
Device “slice” detail block diagrams are shown in Figures 1-4 through 1-7. Device s ecifications are listed
in Table 1-1.
