INTRODUCTION
Measurements of Aerosol Black Carbon at remote or high-altitude locations are essential for
determining the long-range transport of pollution; impacts on sensitive ecosystems; and
radiative forcing for climate change. The analytical performance of instruments such as the
AE33 and AE43 Aethalometers is directly proportional to the sample air flow rate. The
internal pump of these instruments provides a constant sample flow rate of 5 SLPM,
stabilized by the internal mass flow sensors, from sea level to an altitude of approximately
3000 m. At higher altitudes; while the analytical optics of these instruments will operate
without any problems; the reduced absolute pressure leads to a reduction in sample flow
rate and consequently lower sensitivity. The High-Altitude Booster Pump (AETH-HA-
PUMP) increases the sample flow rate and enables the AE33 and AE43 Aethalometers to
deliver high-quality data at altitudes up to 5000 m. above sea level.

1.2 Intended use and description of the equipment.
The AE33/AE43 internal suction pump draws the sample air stream into the inlet connector
and through the analytical filtration area. The pump speed is under closed-loop software
control to stabilize the sample flow rate to the desired set point. Two flow sensors measure the
airflow in the two sampling streams. Their data is used in the BC calculation as well as for the
closed-loop flow stabilization.
The internal suction pump in combination with the flow sensors can supply a constant sample
flow rate of 5 SLPM up to altitudes of about 3000 m above sea level. When operated at higher
altitudes, the sample flow rate provided by the internal pump will decrease.

The Aethalometer High Altitude Booster Pump will extend the rated performance of
AE33/AE43 instruments to altitudes of 5000 m above sea level.

Electric shock
Use ONLY the External AC/DC power supply (VES150PS12) specified by the manufacturer and
supplied with the equipment (see below). CHECK the USB power supply and the USB supply
cord ANNUALLY. If either is DAMAGED, stop using the equipment and contact your authorized
representative.
Control cable
Use ONLY the Control Cable (HAP 1 99 004) specified by the manufacturer and supplied with
the equipment (see below).
Fire and explosion
NEVER install the equipment in explosion-risk areas and never use the equipment near
flammable substances.
Equipment overheating
ALWAYS assure the equipment operates under proper operating ambient conditions.
NEVER install the equipment in spaces with limited air circulation.
Equipment service and repair
UNAUTHORIZED service or repair procedures WILL VOID THE WARRANTY. The equipment
can only be serviced, repaired or modified by authorized personnel. Please contact your

INSTALLATION
3.1 Air tubing connection
Place the High-Altitude Booster Pump on an even surface next to the Aethalometer. The
maximum distance between AETH-HA-PUMP and AE33/AE43 should not exceed 1.5 m. The
equipment is supplied with two meters of black conductive sample line tubing (M4997).
Connect the AE33/AE43 Sample Air outlet to the Booster Pump as shown below in Figure 4.
Figure 4. Connect Aethalometer sample air outlet to AETH-HA-PUMP inlet. The maximum distance
between AETH-HA-PUMP and AE33/AE43 must not exceed 1.5 m.

3.2 AC/DC power supply and connecting cable
The external AC/DC power supply, cord and Control Cable are supplied with the Booster Pump.
Connect them as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5. Connect AETH-HA-PUMP (12 VDC, 150 W connector) to power supply with External AC/DC
power supply adapter (VES150PS12). Connect AETH-HA-PUMP (COMM connector) to Aethalometer
(AETH-HA-PUMP connector) using control cable (HAP 1 99 004).
When power supply and control cable are connected to the HAP, its LED indicators for POWER
and OPERATION will turn green.
The AE33/AE43 will automatically detect and use AETH-HA-PUMP if connected.

3.3 Flow range set valve adjustment
The Flow range set valve is located on the rear panel (Figure 6). The purpose of this valve is to
control the minimum lower flow of the HAP.
Figure 6. Flow range set valve is located on the rear panel.
NOTE: If the valve is fully open, the minimum lower flow of the HAP may exceed the
maximum flow of the internal AE33/AE43 pump. This could lead to flow warnings at
certain altitudes between 2500 m and 3500 m above sea level (Figure 7, marked with
red circle). In such cases, rotate flow range set in counterclockwise direction until you
reach 5 SLPM (Figure 8). Refer to the data table in AE33 or AE43 for information about
the current flow.

Figure 7. If the valve is fully open, the minimum flow of the HAP exceeds the maximum flow of the
internal AE33/AE43 pump.
By partly closing the Flow Range Set Valve, the AE33/AE43 can provide a constant sample flow
of 5 SLPM throughout the entire extended operating range (Figure 8).
