Tool Use and Care
12. Use clamps or other practical way tosecure and support the workpiece to
a stable platform. Holdingthe work by handor against your body is unstable
and may lead to
loss of control.
13. Do notforce tool. Usethe correct tool for your application. The correct tool
will do the job better and safer at the rate for which
it is designed.
14. Do not use tool if switch does not turn it on or off. A tool that cannot be
controlled with the switch
is dangerous and must be repaired.
15. Disconnect battery pack from tool or place the switch in the locked or off
position before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing
the tool. Such preventive safety measuresreducethe risk of startingthe tool
accidentally.
16. Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools
are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
17. When battery pack isnot in use, keep it away from other metalobjects like:
paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws,
or other small metalobjects that can
make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery
terminals together may cause sparks, burns, or a fire.
18. Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly
maintainedtools with sharpcutting edge are less likelyto bindand are easier
to control.
19. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and
any other condition that may affect the tool's operation.
If damaged, have
the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly

Specific Safety Rules

the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring. Contact with a “live” wire will
also make exposed metal parts

2. Beforeusing battery charger, read all instructions and cautionary markings

(1) battery charger, (2) battery, and (3) product using battery.
3. CAUTION - To reduce risk of injury, charge only MAKITA rechargeable
batteries marked on the charger label. Other types of batteries may burst
causing personal injury and damage.
4. Do not expose charger to rain or snow.
5. Use of an attachment not recommended or sold by the battery charger
manufacturer may result

6. To reduce risk of damage to electric plugand cord, pullby plugrather than
cord when disconnecting charger.
7. Make sure cord is located so that it will not be stepped on, tripped over, or

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

draw it from the tool while pressing the

Tipsfor maintainingmaximumbattery life
1. Chargethe battery cartridgebefore completely discharged.
Always stop tool operation and chargethe battery cartridge when
you notice less tool
power.
2. Never rechargea fully chargedbattery cartridge.
Overchargingshortensthe battery service life.
3. Chargethe battery cartridgewith roomtemperature at 10°C - 40°C (50°F - 104°F).
Leta hot battery cartridgecooldownbeforecharging
it.
Switch action
CAUTIO N:
Before inserting the battery cartridge into
the tool, always check to see that the
switch trigger actuates properlyand returns
to the "OFF" positionwhen released.
To start the tool, simply pull the trigger.
Tool speed is increasedby increasingpres-
sure on the trigger. Release the trigger to
stop.
Reversingswitch action
CAUTION:
*Always check the direction of rotationbeforeoperation.
*Use the reversing switch only after the tool comes to a complete stop. Changing the
direction of rotationbeforethetoolstops maydamage the tool.
*When not operating the tool, always set
the reversing switch lever to the neutral
position.
This tool has a reversing switch to change
the direction of rotation. Depress the
reversingswitch lever from the A side for
clockwise rotation or from the
B side for
counterclockwiserotation.When the switch
lever is in the neutral position, the switch
trigger cannot be pulled.

Spwdchange
To change the speed, first switch off the
tooland then slide the speed change lever
to the
"11" side for high speed or "I" side
for low speed. Be sure that the speed
change lever is set to the correct position
before operation. Use the right speed for
your job.

CAUTION:
.Always set the speed change lever fully to the correct position.
If you operate the tool
withthe speed change lever positionedhalf-waybetweenthe
"I" side and "11" side, the
toolmay be damaged.
Do not use the speedchange leverwhile the toolis running.The tool may be damaged.
Adjustingthefastening torque
The fasteningtorque can be adjusted in 17
steps by turning the adjusting ring so that
itsgraduations are alignedwith the pointer
on the tool body. The fastening torque is
minimum when the number
1 is aligned
with the pointer, and maximum when the
fl markingisalignedwith the pointer.
The clutch will slip at various torque levels
when set at the number
1 to 16. The clutch
isdesignednotto slip
at the fl marking.
Before actualoperation, drive
a trial screw
into your material or
a piece of duplicate
materialtodeterminewhich torque levelisrequiredfor
a particularapplication.
NOTE:
.Do not operate the tool with the adjusting ring set between the number 16 and the
fl marking. The toolmay be damaged.

ASSEMBLY
Installing or removingdriver bit or drill bit
CAUTION:
Always be sure that the tool is switched
off and the battew cartridge is removedbefore
installingor removingthe bit.
Hold the ring and turn the sleeve counter-
clockwise to open the chuck jaws. Place
the bit inthe chuck as far as
it willgo. Hold
the ring
firmly and turn the sleeve clock-
wise to tighten the chuck.
To remove the bit, hold the ring and turn
the sleevecounterclockwise.

OPERATION
Screwdrivingoperation
Place the point of the driver bit in the
screw head and apply pressureto the tool.
Start the tool slowly and then increase the
speed gradually. Release the trigger as
soon as the clutchcuts in.
--
NOTE:
*Make sure that the driver bit is insertedstraight in the screw head, or the screw and/or
bitmay bedamaged.
*When driving wood screws, predrill pilot
holes to make driving easier and to pre-
vent splitting of the workpiece. See the
chart.

*If the tool is operated continuously untilthe battery cartridge has discharged, allow the

15 minutesbeforeproceedingwith a fresh battery.
Drillingoperation
First, turn the adjusting ring so that the pointer on the tool body points to the B marking.
Then proceedas follows.
*Drilling inwood
When drilling in wood, best resultsare obtainedwith wood drills equippedwith
a guide
screw. The guide screw makes drillingeasier by pullingthe bit into the workpiece.
To preventthe bitfrom slipping when starting a hole, make an indentationwith a center-
punch and hammer
at the point to be drilled. Place the point of the bit inthe indentation
and start drilling.
Use
a cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are iron and brass which
should be drilleddry.
*Drilling in metal

*Pressingexcessivelyon the
tool will not speed upthe drilling.Infact, this excessivepres-
sure will only serve
to damage the tip of your bit, decrease the tool performanceand
shortenthe service life of the
tool.

Holdthe
tool firmly and exert care whenthe bitbeginsto breakthrough the workpiece.
*A stuck bit can be removedsimply by setting the reversingswitch to reverse rotation in
order to back
out. However,the tool mayback out abruptly if you do not hold it firmly.
*Always securesmallworkpieces in
a vise or similar hold-down device.
*If the tool is operatedcontinuously until the battery cartridge has discharged, allow the
tool
to rest for 15minutes beforeproceedingwith afresh battery.
Installing set plate
For 62260 & 6227D
Always installthe set platewhen usingbat-
tery cartridges 9100, 9102, 9102A for
6226D and 1200, 1202, 1202A for 6227D.
Install the set plate on the tool with the
screw provided.

MAINTENANCE
CAUTION:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before
attemptingto performinspectionor maintenance.
To maintainproductSAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs, maintenance or adjustment should
be performed by Makita Authorized or Factory
Service Centers, always using Makita
replacementparts.
Recycling the Battery
The only way to dispose of a Makita battery is
to recycle it. The law prohibits any other
method
of disposal.
Ni-Cd
To recycle the battery:
1. Remove the battery from the tool.
2. a). Take the battery to your nearest Makita Factory Service Center
or
b). Take the battery to your nearest Makita Authorized Service Center or
Distributor that has been designated as a Makita battery recycling location.
Callyour nearest Makita Service Center or Distributor to determine the location
that provides Makita battery recycling. See your local Yellow Pages under
