2.1 USE OF THE DEVICE
Excaliper is switched on by pressing the ENTER –switch.
Menus are scrolled by moving the slide and the selection is done with ENTER.
Numbers and selections from the list can be entered by TOGGLE switch and
accepted by ENTER.
2.2 MEASURING OF DIAMETER
Measuring arms must be closed before the caliper is switched on. The caliper has an
automatic calibration procedure and a warning is given if the caliper founds a
negative diameter reading and the caliper gives an error message: close the jaws
and measure again (arms has not been closed while power on)
If the measured diameter is larger than set in SETTINGS-menu, buzzer gives a
warning beep. User should then measure the diameter by tape and feed this value in
mm by TOGGLE –switch or by typing from the keyboard. (this feature can be
different if defined differently in a tailored software)
2.3 CALIBRATING THE CALIPER
With the caliper there is delivered an aluminium calibration plate for checking the
personal measuring force. It is recommended to verify every users measuring
technique against a known diameter. Push the measuring jaws against the calibration
plate at a distance of 3 cm from the top of the jaws and read the measurement. Verify
the reading to the numbers engraved to the calibration plate. Every caliper is tested
before shipment to withstand a force of 20N without going out of measuring tolerance

If the caliper finds a negative diameter reading, an error notification is shown on the
display: "Calibrating Error" (the measuring jaws were not together when switching on)
1. Switch the caliper off.
2. Bring the measuring arms together.
3. Switch the caliper on.
4. Check the measuring accuracy with the calibration plate.
2.4 CONNECTIONS
The cable set delivered with the caliper can be connected directly from docking
station to PC’s serial port. One end of the cable must be connected to 12 VDC fuse
box and protected with max. 4A fuse.
Excaliper can also be connected to PC via 9 –pin Sub D –connector. Connection is
serial RS 232. The serial cable delivered with the caliper can be connected directly to
PC’s serial port. Connect the cable first to the PC and then to the caliper. It is
recommended that the caliper is switched off while connecting the cables.

6
2.5 DOCKING STATION
Connect the caliper to docking station according to following picture.
1. Insert the caliper slide to upper holder.
2. Install the caliper to docking station by pressing the caliper gently.
3. Remove the caliper from docking station by pressing the button in docking station

3. MAINTENANCE
3.1 MAIN BATTERIES
Masser Excaliper is operated by rechargeable NiCd battery which has capacity for a
full day work. If the capacity of the battery wears down by the age, contact service
and you can order a replacement battery pack (spare part number: 14737)
The caliper charges automatically when placed in the docking station and the
harvester is switched on (a separate AC charger is also available for the caliper). Use
of other charging devices is not allowed.
When the battery is nearly empty, the caliper display shows the warning: BATTERY
EMPTY. After the warning, the caliper software normally runs for a further 5 to 10
minutes before the battery is completely empty. The working time of a new battery,
after the warning, may be longer.
Full charging takes over ten hours. However, the caliper may be left to charge for
longer since the battery's charge control ensures that the battery is not overcharged.
The caliper detects when the harvester is switched off and then turns itself off
(automatic power off) after a period of time defined in the settings.
One full charge provides a working time of 10 to 30 hours, depending on temperature
during use.
If the caliper is not used for a while, charge the battery every three months so that
the memory back-up battery is not drained.
3.2 MEMORY BACK-UP BATTERY
Inside the caliper there is a user changeable coin type CR2032 lithium battery. This
battery secures the data and the programs when the main batteries are empty or just
when the main battery is being replaced.
This battery can secure the memory up to six months. Lifetime for this battery is
nearly ten years if the main battery is kept full charged.
Memory battery can be changed by opening six Allen screws (2.5 mm Allen key)
which hold the cover. Be careful for the cables inside the cover when extracting and
assembling the cover.

8
3.3 SEALS
Masser calipers are designed to withstand moisture and water. All devices are tested
pressurized under the water before delivery. To maintain the waterproofness user
should check periodically that the seals are not damaged in use.
ENTER –button has a rubber boot which can be changed by the user. (Spare part
no: 13798 Rubber Boot, including a special key for removing the old boot and fixing
the new). Check the boot periodically for the small incisions so that there is no cut
growth. If the seal fails the ENTER button can get moisture and impurities inside.
If you find any moisture inside the display, take the calliper in a dry place and open
the nine Allen screws holding the cover. Let the calliper dry and assemble the cover
carefully back. If you do not find the reason for the leak, contact the nearest service
point.
3.4 CLEANING, LUBRICATING
Use only by mild soap moistened cloth to clean the caliper. Try to get resins off
mechanically.
The bearings in slide rollers are pre-lubricated and do not need any service.
Do not use any kind of solvents or oil !!!
3.5 STORING
Do not leave the caliper in a closed car on direct sunshine. The temperature can rise
easily over 50ºC and this temperature is critical for the batteries and for some
components.
3.6 MAGNETIC SCALE
Masser Excaliper-models are equipped with a magnetic diameter measuring sensor.
The magnetic measuring principle is accurate and gives reliable readings regardless
of temperature variations and humidity (rain) and needs minimum amount of energy
for operation.
Even though the magnetic scale is sturdy, it is recommended that the caliper is not
used or stored next to magnetic equipment. (electric motors, big solenoids, monitors

9
or magnetized tools…) Also sharp knocks directly to the magnetic scale or bending
the scale can destroy it.
3.7 RESET
In case you do not know the state of the caliper and it does not switch off, open the
cap of the data transfer port and connect pins 1 and 5 together with a piece of metal
(straightened paper clip).
4. LOADING A NEW PROGRAM
Caliper must be shut off. By pushing the TOGGLE- switch upwards and keeping it
there before starting the caliper with ENTER, the caliper shows:
RUN PROG
INSTALL
MEM TEST
SHUT DOWN
RUN PROG starts the program form the main menu.
INSTALL the caliper starts to wait a new program from PC. On the display is a text:
Press sw. to abort.(if Enter is pressed the loading is aborted). Wait until the caliper
has made the program settings ready and cleared the memory. Caliper shuts down
automatically when program is installed.
MEM TEST the caliper checks the program memory so that there is no corrupted
data (takes some time). An error message appears if corrupted data is found. Load
the program again and if the error message appears again contact service.
