This chapter introduces you to the key features of your
Matrox Supersight unit.

Overview
A Matrox Supersight unit is a high-performance computing (HPC) platform that
allows the connection of Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 system Host board(s),
GPU boards (display boards), boards with field-programmable gate arrays
(FPGAs), and frame grabber/processing boards in one chassis. All these boards are
connected to a PCIe switched fabric backplane; allowing Matrox Supersight and
its associated boards to communicate with each other on its own network.
Each Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 in the unit acts as a separate computer with
its own BIOS, operating system, memory, hard disk drives, USB ports, and
network ports. An SHB’s access to an auxiliary board (such as a GPU, FPGA, and
frame grabber/processing board) depends on the number of SHBs connected to
the backplane and on the slot in which the SHB board and the auxiliary board
are connected. Each SHB can either be connected to one or more of its own hard
disk drives.
Types of units
There are two types of Matrox Supersight units available. They differ as follows:
• Matrox Supersight e2 can have up to 4 possible SHBs.
• Matrox Supersight Solo can only have 1 SHB. In addition, there is an 8-connector
version and a 13-connector version. Other than the difference in the number of
PCIe connectors, the two variations function identically.

Backplane 11
The Matrox Supersight units come pre-installed with a backplane, one SHB-5520
with memory modules, Microsoft Windows 7 for Embedded Systems 64-bit, a
mass storage device, a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, a power supply, and three
cooling fans; these are encased within a metal chassis.
Documentation conventions
The following conventions are used in this manual.
Node A node consists of one SHB-5520, along with any additional boards that are
connected to the SHB through the backplane, such as GPU boards, boards with
FPGAs, frame grabber boards, and processing boards.1
Naming convention This manual refers to both Matrox Supersight e2 and Matrox Supersight Solo
units as Matrox Supersight. When necessary, their full names are used.
Backplane
The Matrox Supersight backplane is a switched fabric backplane. A switched fabric
backplane allows one SHB to communicate without additional connectors with
the PCIe 2.0 boards connected to the same backplane and belonging to the same
node. This communication occurs below the operating system level, and can be
accessed by programs like a Distributed MIL application. Note that, since this
communication occurs below the operating system level, no Ethernet network
connection is required.
The Matrox Supersight backplane differs between versions:

Switched fabric
backplanes
As a switched fabric backplane, the Matrox Supersight unit uses a series of PCIe
switches to control the connections between your PCIe boards and the Matrox
Supersight SHB-5520 board(s). A switched fabric backplane allows traffic from
one PCIe connector to pass through to the next available PCIe switch without
being bottlenecked, while providing maximum bandwidth to the SHB.
Some PCIe connectors on the Matrox Supersight backplane are paired, allowing
one of two PCIe connectors to communicate at x16 while the other is
non-functional or both PCIe connectors of the pair to communicate at x8. These
PCIe connector pairs have their PCIe lanes routed through a series of
multiplexers/demultiplexers (muxes/demuxes). These muxes/demuxes are
initialized upon start-up, based on the presence of a board in the PCIe connector
that can be x8 or non-functional (x0).
Matrox Supersight Solo (13-connector version) uses two x16 lanes for
communication with the SHB, while Matrox Supersight e2 and the 8-connector
version of Matrox Supersight Solo uses only one.

The Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board is a PICMG 1.3 board that intergrates
the following functionality:
•Processing. Processing comes from either one or two multi-core Intel Xeon
processors. There are two types of processors available:
- Intel Xeon Quad-Core E5620 2.4 GHz processor.
- Intel Xeon Six-Core E5645 2.4 GHz processor.
These processors use processor technologies designed to accelerate multimedia and
imaging applications. The processors use multimedia extension (MMX)
technology, streaming SIMD extensions (SSE, SSE2, SSE3, and SSSE3)
technology, and EM64T (Intel 64 architecture) technology. These technologies
are extensions to the Intel architecture, which address the key characteristics of
applications that must handle large amounts of image, video, and graphics data.
•Display. Display capabilities come from a dedicated graphics controller. The
graphics controller allows you to send analog video data to one high-resolution
analog display device, such as an analog monitor or analog flat panel. The
maximum display resolution is 1600 x 1200 with 16 bits/pixel.
•Memory. Memory comes from the SO-DIMM memory modules installed in the
six 204-pin SO-DIMM slots; each slot supports a SO-DIMM memory module
up to 8 Gbytes in size. The DDR3 modules run at up to 666 MHz (DDR3-1333).
The total amount of memory can be 48 Gbytes.
•Mass storage. Mass storage comes from a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive,
connected to the first SHB1through the backplane. Each SHB must be connected
to a mass storage device containing its operating system; without it, the SHB
cannot boot. The chassis has room for four 2.5-inch SATA hard drives and one
CD RW/DVD ROM drive.

installed section, in Chapter 3: Connecting devices to the backplane and to the
Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board).

•Networking. Networking comes from the two integrated Gbit Ethernet
interfaces. Each Gbit Ethernet interface supports 10BaseT, 100BaseT, and
1000BaseT, which can be used to connect the Matrox Supersight SHB-5520
board to your network.
•BIOS. The BIOS is stored on an on-board flash memory device. The BIOS acts
as an interface between the operating system and the Matrox Supersight
SHB-5520 board.
The installation of a Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board can block some PCIe
connectors on the backplane, as each Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 board takes
up to two slots, and partially blocks a third slot. This partially blocked third slot
can still be used, but only by short (1/2 length) PCIe boards or auxiliary I/O
adapter brackets.

1. Matrox Supersight SHB-5520 has two x16 PCI 2.0 connections on its edge connector. Note that while Matrox Supersight e2 supportse
only one x16 PCI 2.0 connection, Matrox Supersight Solo supports both connectionse (13-connector version) .

Operating system
The Matrox Supersight unit is shipped with Microsoft Windows 7 for Embedded
Systems, 64-bit.
The following 32- and 64-bit operating systems are also supported, and can be
installed using Microsoft’s Migration rights1:
• Microsoft Windows Vista for Embedded Systems.
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems.
If you downgrade to Microsoft Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems,
you will need to install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) to take
advantage of all the features available in the Matrox Supersightunit and the Matrox
Imaging Library (MIL).
To downgrade the operating system, contact your Matrox representative.
❖Note that if you try using any other operating system, there might be driver issues
(for example, driver issues with USB devices). Refer to the documentation
accompanying the operating system for more information.
If installing an operating system on your unit, refer to the readme file on your
Matrox Supersight system drivers and utilities DVD. It contains additional
information regarding installing the appropriate the device driver/utility software
for the Intel chipset, display driver, and Intel Integrated Ethernet driver for your
Matrox Supersight SHB.

Matrox Supersight e2 unit.
Hard disk drives You can order three additional SATA hard disk drives (for a maximum total of
four), along with its associated cabling. Note that, in a typical installation, one
hard disk drive for each SHB in your Matrox Supersight will come
pre-installed with an operating system.

USB and COM port I/O
