GENERALDESCRIPTION
TheMcintoshC11StereophonicPre-
amplifierisa controlcenterforanystereo-
phonicsoundsystem.Toincreasethe
enjoymentofstereo,thiscontrolcenterdoes
fourjobswithprecisecontrol.
First,thecontrolcenteramplifiesweak
electricalimpulses.Astherecordrotateson
theturntable,undulationsinthegrooves
movethepick-upstylusapproximatelyone-
thousandthofaninch,inanydirection,from
therestposition.Fromthisslightmechanical
movement,thepick-upstylusgeneratesa
weakelectricalimpulseontheorderofa few
thousandthsofa volt.Toamplifyandpre-
servetheinformationinsuchanelectrical
impulse,thefinestamplifierperformanceis
required.
Second,everysoundsystemisusedina
differentacousticalenvironment.Thetone
balanceofthemusicisaffectedbyvariations

TheC11circuitconsistsofthreeamplify-
ingsectionsinduplicatefortheleftandright
stereochannelsanda powersupply.The
firstsectionistheinputpreamplifierusedto
amplifyandequalizetheinputsignalscom-
ingfromphonographpickups,microphones,
ortapeheads.Skillfullayout,grounding,and
shieldingforlowhumpickups,metalfilmand
wirewoundresistors,terminalboardswith
highspecificresistivity,lownoisetubesand
extremecareinmanufacturingcombineto
achievea newlowinnoiseandhum.
Thesecondamplifyingsectionfollowsthe
volumecontrol,andthusitisimpossibleto
overloadthecircuitoranyfollowingcircuits.
Thesametechniquesaswereusedinthe
preamplifierstageassurelowhumandnoise.
Thebassandtrebletonecontrolsarefeed-
backtypecircuitsandoperateinconnection
inenvironment.Also,peoplelisteningtothe
musichavevaryingideasofcorrecttonebal-

machines,microphones,etc.,a controlcen-

sourcesseparatelyorincombination.
