SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Do not let children use electrical devices unattended.
Swallowing batteries may be fatal. Therefore always keep the
unit and batteries inaccessible to young children. If a battery
has been swallowed, consult a doctor immediately.
Also, keep the plastic packaging out of reach for children to
avoid danger of suffocation.
Ambient conditions
Make sure that
no foreign bodies or fluids get into the unit;
the unit does not get into contact with dripping water,
splash water or humidity;
the unit is not exposed to humidity, sunlight or other di-
rect heat (e. g. from radiators);
no open fire sources, such as candles, are placed on the
unit;
the ventilation of the AC adaptor is not covered (e. g., by
curtains).
About this manual
Please observe the following safety instructions
carefully before putting the unit into operation.
Take note of the warnings on the unit and in
this manual.
Always keep the instruction manual near at hand.
If you sell or pass on the product, make sure to
include this manual together with the unit.

Power connection
Connect the AC adaptor to an easily accessible power socket
(AC 120 V ~ 60 Hz) close to the unit.
Do not use another than the supplied AC adaptor, model no.
CSD04506000u-31. Connect the AC adapter only to the AC
power socket on your CD Player.
Using other adaptors or this adaptor with another device may
damage both the adaptor and the device.
Charging batteries
Only recharge NiCd-batteries size AA, LR6. After charging the
batteries, turn the CHARGE-switch OFF.
Never attempt to charge non-rechageable batteries! There is
danger of explosion!
Do not open or attempt to repair the unit yourself.
In case the power supply cord or the unit is damaged, pull
out the AC power plug immediately.
Under no circumstances attempt to open or
repair the unit yourself. There is danger of
electric shock!
Refer all servicing to our Service Center or to
another qualifed workshop.
CD-Player
The CD player is a Class 1 laser pro-
duct. The unit is equipped with a
safety system that prevents the
emergence of dangerous laser be-
ams during normal operation. To
avoid injury to the eye, do not manipulate or damage the
safety system of the unit.

Battery disposal
Empty alkaline and NiCd batteries do not belong
in the household refuse. The batteries must be dis-
posed of at a designated disposal/recycle point.
Car connection
When connecting the car adaptor, mind the specified voltage
and polarity.
Only use the supplied car adaptor which is equipped with a
fuze T 2A L.
Use the earphone carefully.
Do not use head- or earphones when actively taking part in
traffic, especially, when you steer a car.
Do not expose yourself to a high volume level for a long pe-
riod of time. Your hearing can be damaged.
Cleaning the device
Always disconnect the AC power plug before cleaning the
unit.
To clean the unit, only use a moistened, soft cloth. Do not ap-
ply chemical solvents or cleaning agents, as they may da-
mage the surface and/or labelling of the unit.
Compliance with FCC
The device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules.
Operation is subject to the condition that this device does not
cause harmful interference.

SET-UP
Unpacking the unit
`Remove all packaging material including the transport
cardboard in the CD-compartment.
ATTENTION!
To avoid danger of suffocation, do not let young
children play with plastic bags!
Connecting the power
AC power supply
`Connect the DC plug of the supplied AC adaptor to the
4.5-V-socket at the unit.
`Connect the power plug to an easily accessible AC outlet
120 V ~ 60 Hz. To avoid tripping, do not use an extension
lead.
Check the contents of the box
After unpacking the product, make sure that the fol-
lowing items are supplied:
CD-Player
AC adaptor
Stereo in-earphone
Car adaptor
Audio adaptor cassette
LINE-OUT connection cable
Bag

Inserting alkaline batteries
`Remove the lid of the battery compartment at the rear of
the unit.
`Insert two batteries 1,5 V, size AA, LR6.
Observe the polarity +/- !
`Close the battery compartment.
Charging NiCd batteries
You can operate the unit with two rechargeble NiCd- batte-
ries 1.2 V, size AA, LR6.
`In order to make the batteries rechar-
geable, remove the coating at the ne-
gative pole of one of the rechargeable
batteries.
`When inserting the batteries, make
sure that the blank part of the battery
touches the recharge contact.
`Insert the other rechargeable battery,
observing the polarity, and close the
battery compartment.
When using the rechargeable batteries
for the first time or after a long period of time, they must be
recharged. To do so, only use the supplied AC adaptor.
`Connect the AC adaptor to the unit and to an AC
power outlet.
`Put the CHARGE switch on the position ON and
press STOP. The display shows Cand a graphic
charge indicator.
When the batteries were completely empty, charging time
takes appr. twelve hours. The display goes out when the
batteries are charged.
`Disconnect the AC adaptor and put the CHARGE-switch
on OFF.

ATTENTION!
Never remove the coating from normal alkaline bat-
teries!
If you try to charge normal alkaline batteries, there is
danger of EXPLOSION!
Battery indicator
`When the capacity of the batteries is low, the battery
indicator will blink in the display.
Operation in the car
You can operate the player via your car cassette player:
`Connect the adapter cable for the cigarette lighter with the
DC socket of the CD player.
`Insert the other end into the cigarette lighter.
`Connect the audio adaptor cassette to the PHONES socket
of the CD player.
`Place the adaptor cassette in the cassette tray. Make sure
that the adaptor cassette is properly locked in place.
`Press play on your car cassette player.

Operation via an external audio system
You can operate your CD player via an external audio system,
such as the receiver of your stereo system, etc.
`Connect the LINE OUT connection cable to the LINE OUT
socket of your CD players and the CD or AUX socket of
your audio system.
Always switch the audio system off before connecting
the CD player.
Connecting the in-earphones
`Connect the earphones to the PHONE socket of the CD
player.
You can use the supplied in-earphones, or any ear- or any
headphone with a 3.5 mm stereo jack.
ATTENTION!
Before putting on the ear-/headphones, always turn
the volume down!
Key lock – HOLD
`If you do not want to inadvertently press a button, push
the key lock HOLD to the right position.
HOLD appears in the display.
`To unlock the key lock, push the switch to the left.
ESP function
The ESP function (“Electric-Shock-Protection“) helps prevent
skipping when the player is operated while walking, jogging etc.
When you switch on the player, the ESP buffer will fill auto-
matically. The ESP symbol appears in the display.
If you do not need the ESP function, switch it off in order save
battery power.

PLAYING CDS
Loading and unloading a disc
`Open the CD compartment by pushing the OPEN switch
on the right.
`Insert a CD with the labelled side facing up. Ensure that the
CD snaps in place in the center.
`Close the CD compartment.
Do not open the CD compartment as long the CD is playing
or rotating. Press STOP first.
`To unload the CD, press down the CD fastener carefully
and take the CD out.
Sound adjustment
Volume
`Press VOL+ or VOL– repeatedly in order to increase or de-
crease the volume.
The volume level is briefly shown in the display (1 – 32).
Bass emphasizer – BSS
`Press the BBS button to cycle through the bass boost op-
tions: BOOST 1 , BOOST 2, or off.
PLAY, PAUSE, STOP
`To switch the device on and start
playback at the same time, press
PLAY/PAUSE. The display briefly
shows “ --“, then the playback
starts.
The current track number and the
running time (format MM:SS) will
be displayed.

At the same time, the 45-seconds-buffer fills up; the ESP sym-
bol appears (see “ESP function”, page 8).
The display shows disc when no or an unreadable CD
is inserted.
Interrupt
`To interrupt the playback, press PLAY/PAUSE. The time
blinks in the display.
Please note that pressing PAUSE empties the ESP buffer.
`Press PLAY/PAUSE again to resume playback.
Standby mode/Switching off
`In order to stop the playback, press
STOP.
The device is now in the standby
mode.
The total number of tracks and the to-
tal playing time are displayed.
`Press PLAY in the standby mode to start the playback from
the beginning.
`Press STOP in the standby mode again to switch the de-
vice off. The display will go out.
If in the standby mode you do not press a key within 30 se-
conds, the device will turn off automatically.
If you accidentally open the lid during playback, the
rotating CD will come to a halt slowly. Do not unload
the CD while it is still rotating!
Track and fast search – SKIP
`To skip to the next/previous track, press SKIP DN/REW or
SKIP UP/FF, resp.If you press SKIP DN during playback,
the player will skip to the beginning of the current track.
`Hold for a few seconds during playback to prompt a quick
search within the current track.

REPEAT functions
`Press the MODE key once. The display
shows the repeat symbol with an 1. The
current track is repeated endlessly.
`Press the MODE key twice. The display
shows the repeat symbol and ALL. The
entire CD is repeated endlessly.
INTRO function
`Press the MODE key three times. The
display shows the entry INTRO.
Press PLAY and the intro mode will play
the first ten seconds of each track.
RANDOM function
`Press the MODE key four times. In the dis-
play, the entry SHUFF (for “shuffle“)
blinks.
The tracks will be played in a completely random order.
PROGRAM function
You can program a sequence of up to 20 tracks.
Programming tracks
`Press the PROG key. PROGR 00 blinks
for 30 seconds in the display. Also, the
first program place 01 is shown.
`Select the first track for your program
list with a SKIP key within 30 seconds.
`Press the PROG key again to save the first track. P 02 is dis-
played.
`Select the second track for your program list with a SKIP
key within 30 seconds and press PROG to save it.

`Proceed like this for all other tracks you want to save.
Playing the programmed list
`To play the prgrammed list, press PLAY. The entry PROG
remains in the display.
You can apply the skip, repeat and intro functions to the pro-
grammed sequence as described previously.
Editing a programmed list
The programmed list remains saved, when you stop the play-
back by STOP (standby mode).
`Press PROG to call up the list. The first program place ap-
pears. The number of the first track blinks.
`You can select another track or add another track with a
SKIP key. Save with PROG.
Please mind that the programmed list will be deleted
when you switch the device off.

There are numerous, often not standardized tech-
niques of CD recording and copying protection, as
well as a great variety of blank CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
Therefore reading mistakes or delays may occur in rare
cases. This is no malfunction of the device.
