themselves from the appliance. Danger of burning and
scalding.
Warning and Safety instructions
6

~Packaging, e.g. cling film, polystyrene and plastic
wrappings, must be kept out of the reach of babies
and young children. Danger of suffocation. Dispose of
or recycle all packaging safely as soon as possible.
Technical safety
~Before installation, check the appliance for visible
signs of damage. Do not install and use a damaged
appliance. It could be dangerous.
~The electrical safety of the appliance can only be
guaranteed if correctly earthed. It is most important that
this basic safety requirement is observed and regularly
tested, and where there is any doubt, the household
wiring system should be inspected by a qualified
electrician.
Miele cannot be held liable for the consequences of an
inadequate earthing system (e.g. electric shock).
~Before connecting the appliance to the mains
electricity supply, make sure that the data quoted on
the data plate match the household mains supply,
otherwise the appliance could be damaged. Consult a
qualified electrician if in any doubt.
~For safety reasons, the appliance may only be used
after it has been built in.

Tampering with electrical connections or components
and mechanical parts is highly dangerous to the user
and can cause operational faults.
~Installation, maintenance and repairs may only be
carried out by a suitably qualified and competent
person in strict accordance with current national and
local safety regulations.
Repairs and other work by unqualified persons could
be dangerous. Miele cannot be held liable for
unauthorised work.

regulations. Miele cannot be held liable for damage
caused by incorrect installation or connection.
Warning and Safety instructions
9

~In areas which may be subject to infestation by
cockroaches or other vermin, pay particular attention to
keeping the appliance and its surroundings clean at all
times. Any damage caused by cockroaches or other
vermin will not be covered by the guarantee.
Correct use
~The appliance gets hot when in use and remains hot
for quite a while after being switched off.
Caution: Danger of burning.
~Do not leave the appliance unattended whilst it is
being used. Food could burn and become inedible.
~If oil or fat does catch fire, do not attempt to put out
the flames with water. Use a suitable fire blanket,
saucepan lid, damp towel or similar to smother the
flames.
~Do not use the appliance to heat up the room. Due to
the high temperatures radiated, objects near the
appliance could catch fire. The life of the appliance
could also be reduced.
~Use heat-resistant pot holders or gloves when using
the appliance. Do not let them get damp or wet, as this
causes heat to transfer through the material more
quickly with the risk of scalding or burning yourself.
Warning and Safety instructions
10

~Do not use the top of the appliance as a resting
place for anything and do not leave heat-sensitive
items near the appliance. The article could melt or
catch fire if the appliance is switched on by mistake or
if residual heat is still present.
~Where several appliances are installed side by side
Do not place hot pots or pans on the cover strip as this
can damage the seal.
~Make sure that all dishes and crockery used with the
appliance are heat-resistant. Never use plastic dishes.
Fire hazard.
~Do not heat up unopened tins of food under the
browning unit as pressure will build up in the tin,
causing it to explode. This could result in injury and
scalding or damage.
~Only use smooth-based dishes. Rough bases will
scratch the ceramic glass surface. Lift pans to move
them. Sliding them into place can cause scuffs and
scratches.
~When using an electrical appliance, e.g. a hand-held
food blender, near the Salamander, ensure that the
cable of the electrical appliance does not come into
contact with the hot Salamander. The insulation on the
cable could become damaged, giving rise to an
electric shock hazard.
Warning and Safety instructions
11

~To avoid the risk of scratches, do not use the top of
the browning unit as a resting place for items.
~Keep the ceramic surface clean. Grains of salt,
sugar or sand (e.g. from cleaning vegetables) can
cause scratches.
~If the appliance is installed behind a kitchen furniture
door, it may only be used with the furniture door open.
Only close the door when the appliance is switched off
and the residual heat indicator has gone out.
Miele cannot be held liable for damage caused by
non-compliance with these Warning and Safety
instructions.

Disposal of the packing
material
The transport and protective packing
has been selected from materials which
are environmentally friendly for
disposal, and should be recycled.
Ensure that any plastic wrappings,
bags, etc. are disposed of safely and
kept out of the reach of babies and
young children. Danger of suffocation.
Disposal of your old appliance
Electrical and electronic appliances
often contain materials which, if
handled or disposed of incorrectly
could be potentially hazardous to
human health and to the environment.
They are, however, essential for the
correct functioning of your appliance.
Please do not therefore dispose of it
with your household waste.
Please dispose of it at your local
community waste collection/recycling
centre or contact your dealer for
advice. Ensure that it presents no
danger to children while being stored
for disposal.

Please stick the extra data plate for the
appliance supplied with this
documentation in the space provided in
the "After sales service, data plate,
guarantee" section of this booklet.
Cleaning for the first time
^Remove any protective foil and
adhesive labels.
^Clean all surfaces with a damp cloth,
and then wipe dry.
The metal components have a
protective coating which may give off
a slight smell when heated up for the
first time. The smell and any vapours
will dissipate after a short time, and
do not indicate a faulty connection or
appliance.
Before using for the first time
14

Raising and lowering the
browning unit
^To raise the browning unit, turn the
left-hand control to -.
The browning unit will extend up to its
full height, even if you release the
control knob back to the ßsymbol.
You can select any height you wish for
the browning unit by turning the control
briefly to e.
^To lower the browning unit, turn the
left-hand control to eand hold it until
the browning unit is at the required
height or until it is fully lowered.
Do not lower the browning unit
completely until the residual heat
indicator has gone out.
Switching on and off
Do not leave the appliance
unattended whilst it is being used.
The appliance is switched on by
turning the right-hand control to the
required power setting, and switched
off by turning the control back to "0".
The control can be turned clockwise or
anti-clockwise to switch the appliance
on and off.
Nlights up in the display after the
appliance has been switched on,
The residual heat indicator comes on
as soon as a certain temperature is
reached. It only goes out once the
ceramic surface of the browning unit
can be touched safely.
The appliance only heats up when
the browning unit is raised to at least
70 mm.
Operation
15

To brown or crisp food
^Raise the browning unit.
^Place the dish containing food to be
browned on the ceramic standing
surface.
^Lower the browning unit until the
distance between the food and the
heating element is approx. 3-5 cm.
^Turn the right-hand control to setting
"12". Make sure that the control is
exactly positioned at the "12".
The food will be browned in 3-5
minutes, depending on how brown or
crisp you would like it to be.
Only one dish of food can be
browned at a time.
Keeping food warm
Dishes can be kept warm for a few
minutes under the Salamander.
^Raise the browning unit.
^Place the dish containing the food to
be kept warm on the ceramic
standing surface.
^Lower the browning unit until the
distance between the food and the
heating element is approx. 10 cm.
^Turn the right-hand control to a
medium setting.
Useful tips
The Salamander is perfect for browning
and crisping food topped with cheese
(e.g. meat and pasta dishes, croque
monsieur, vegetable gratin) and
caramelised sweet dishes such as
crème brûlée.
The Salamander cannot be used to
re-heat food.
After use
^Switch the appliance off.
^Clean the appliance after each use
while it is still warm to the touch (see
"Cleaning and care").
^Do not lower the browning unit until
the residual heat indicator has gone
out.
Operation
16

Thermal retraction stop sensor
Your Salamander is fitted with a thermal
retraction stop sensor to prevent
damage to the appliance when
lowering the browning unit. This
ensures that the browning unit can only
be fully lowered once the appliance has
cooled down sufficiently, i.e. once the
residual heat indicator has gone out.
Height recognition
The appliance only heats up when the
browning unit is raised to at least
70 mm above the ceramic standing
surface.
Overheating protection
The halogen heating element in the
browning unit is fitted with overheating
protection. This switches off the heating
element automatically before the
ceramic surface overheats. Once the
ceramic surface has cooled down to a
safe level, the heating element will
automatically switch back on again.
You can tell that the overheating
protection has activated because the
heating switches on and off even when
the highest setting is selected.
Obstruction sensor
If the browning unit meets an
obstruction (e.g. a dish) whilst it is
being lowered, it stops immediately and
rises again by approx. 10 mm.
Safety features
17

Miele offer a range of cleaning and
conditioning agents for your appliance.
See "Optional accessories".
,Do not use a steam cleaning
appliance to clean this appliance.
The steam could reach electrical
components and cause a short
circuit.
Clean the appliance regularly,
preferably after each use. Allow the
appliance to cool down to a safe
temperature before cleaning. To avoid
water marks and limescale deposits,
use a soft cloth to dry surfaces that
have been cleaned with water.
To avoid damaging the surface of
your appliance, do not use:
–cleaning agents containing soda,
alkalines, ammonia, acids or
chlorides,
–cleaning agents containing
descaling agents,
–stain or rust removers,
–abrasive cleaning agents, e.g.
powder cleaners and cream
cleaners,
–solvent-based cleaning agents,
– dishwasher cleaner,
– grill and oven cleaners,
– glass cleaning agents,
– hard, abrasive brushes or sponges,
e.g. pot scourers, or sponges which
have been previously used with
abrasive cleaning agents,
– sharp pointed objects
(these can damage the seal between
the frame and the worktop)
–melamine eraser blocks,
Cleaning and care

Stainless steel
The Miele ceramic and stainless steel
hob cleaning agent is suitable for
cleaning stainless steel surfaces (see
"Optional accessories").
To help prevent re-soiling, we
recommend a stainless steel
conditioning agent (see "Optional
accessories").
Apply sparingly with a soft cloth.
Do not use the ceramic and
stainless steel hob cleaning agent
on printed surfaces. This would rub
off the print. These areas should be
only cleaned with an E-Cloth or with
a solution of warm water and a little
washing-up liquid applied with a soft
sponge.
Standing surface
Clean the standing surface after each
use using an E-Cloth or with a solution
of warm water and a little washing-up
liquid applied with a soft sponge.
Stubborn soiling should be soaked first.
After cleaning, dry with a clean, soft
cloth.
The standing surface must not be
cleaned in a dishwasher.
You can remove the standing surface
and the building-in frame underneath it
for cleaning.
Make sure that the standing surface is
in the correct position when you
replace it. If it is not positioned
correctly, you will not be able to lower
the browning unit to its full extent.
Building-in frame
Clean the building-in frame regularly.
Remove any food deposits or liquid im-
mediately. Clean it with an E-Cloth or
with a solution of warm water and a little
washing-up liquid applied with a soft
sponge. Dry it thoroughly with a clean,
soft cloth.
Ceramic surface of the
browning unit
Remove light soiling with a damp cloth.
Then clean the surface with a suitable
ceramic and stainless steel hob
cleaning agent (see "Optional
accessories") applied with kitchen
paper or a clean cloth. Do not apply
cleaning agent whilst the surface is still
hot, as this could result in marking.
Please follow the manufacturer's
instructions.
Do not use washing-up liquid on the
ceramic surface of the browning
unit.
Finally, wipe the surface with a damp
cloth, then polish dry with a clean, soft
cloth. Ensure that all cleaning agent
residues are removed. Residues can
burn onto the surface the next time it is
heated up and cause damage.
Cleaning and care
19

Installation work and repairs to
electrical appliances must only be
carried out by a suitably qualified
and competent person in strict
accordance with current local and
national safety regulations. Repairs
and other work by unqualified
persons could be dangerous. The
manufacturer cannot be held liable
for unauthorised work.
What to do if ...
... you cannot raise the browning
unit.
Check whether
– food deposits have hardened or
anything has become stuck in the
gap around the browning unit.
– the mains fuse has tripped. If it has,
contact a qualified electrician or the
Miele Service department.
... the appliance does not heat up.
Check whether
–the browing unit is raised sufficiently.
It must be raised by at least 70 mm.
–the ceramic standing surface has
been inserted and is positioned
correctly.
There was an interruption to the power
supply during operation, and the
heating has switched itself off.
To operate the appliance again,
–turn the control to "0".
–lower the browning unit fully.
... the halogen heating element
switches off intermittently.
This is quite normal and does not
indicate incorrect operation or a fault
with the appliance.
... when setting "12" is selected, the
appliance does not get hot enough
for the food to start browning.
Check that the mark on the control is
exactly positioned at the "12". The
appliance operates at a lower power
level when the control is positioned
between the "12" and the "0".
... the browing unit cannot be
lowered.
Check whether
– the appliance has cooled down
sufficiently. The residual heat
indicator must have gone out.
– the ceramic standing surface is
positioned correctly.
... everytime the browning unit is
lowered it rises shortly afterwards.
Check whether there is an object
between the browning unit and the
ceramic standing surface (see "Safety
features / Obstruction sensor").
