GAMERULES
TABLEFOOTBALL
Tablefootballcanbeplayedbytwoteamsoftwoplayerseachorbytwoindividuals.
TheObjectoftheGame–Tobethefirstteam(orplayer)toscoreapredeterminedamountofgoalsorscore
themostgoalsinagiventimeperiod.
ToPlay–Theserverrollstheballthroughtheservingholetostartthegame.Whenaballentersthe
opposingteam’sgoalthenagoalisscored.Iftheballentersthegoalsbutbouncesbackontotheplaying
surfaceorleavesthetableitstillcountsasagoal.Spinningtherodsisnotallowed.Iftheballleavesthe
playingsurface&strikesanyobjectthatisnotpartofthetableitisdeclared‘outofplay’&shouldbeput
backintoplaybyaservefromtheteam(orplayer)thatoriginallyservedthatball.Iftheballrollsintothe
servingcup&thenreturnstotheplayingsurfaceitisstillconsidered‘inplay’.
BILLIARDS
Billiardsreferstogamesplayedonarectangulartablecoveredwithfelt.Poolisthemostpopularbilliards
gameintheUnitedStates.Billiardsgamesmaybeplayedbytwoplayersorteamsoftwoplayerseach.
Playersattempttodriveobjectballsintothetable’spocketsbystrikingthemwiththecueball.
8‐Ball
Themostcommonlyplayedbilliardsgameis‘8‐Ball’.Theobjectofthisgameisforoneplayer(orteam)to
pocketeithertheballsnumbered1to7(solid)or9to15(stripes).Firsttheballsarerackedinatriangle
shapewiththe1‐ballplacedinthefootspotatthefrontoftherack&the8‐ballinthecentre.Thefirst
playerputsthecueballbehindalinecalledthe‘headstring’&thendrivesthecueballintotheobjectballs.
Thecueballmuststriketheheadballorthesecondball.Theplayerwhopocketsthefirstballchooses
stripesorsolids.Thegameiswonbytheplayerwhopocketsallhisobjectballs&thenpocketsthe8‐ballinto
thepockethe‘calls’.Note:ifaplayerpocketsthe8‐ballonthebreakthenhewinsthegameautomatically.
SHUFFLEBOARD
TheObjectoftheGame–Toslidethediscsintothescoringdiagramattheoppositeendoftheboard.
Players(orteammembers)playatoppositeendsoftheboard&gamesareplayeduntiloneplayer(orteam)
scores15points.
ToPlay–Orderofplay&puckcolouraredeterminedbytheflipofacoin.Thewinneroftheflipmaychoose
‘colour’orthe‘hammer’(thelastpuckshotinaround)butnotboth.Theteamwithoutthehammershoots
first.Playersalternateshootinguntilallpuckshavebeenshot.Pointsarecounted&playcontinuesfromthe
oppositeend.Theteamwhichscoredpointsonthepreviousroundshootsfirstonthenextround.Ifno
pointsarescoredontheprecedingroundthehammerchanges(ie.theteamthathadthehammerduring
theroundwherenopointswerescoredmustshootfirstinthenextround).Playcontinuesuntiloneteam
reaches15points.
HowtokeepScore–Onlyoneteamscoresinaround.Theteamwhichhastheirpuckclosesttotheendof
theboard(awayfromtheshooter)scores.Alloftheirpuckswhicharebetweentheendoftheboard(away
fromtheshooter)&theiropponent’spuckwhichisclosesttotheendoftheboard(awayfromtheshooter)
areaddedtogetherforthescoreforthatround.

Apuckscoresonepointifitislocatedbetweentheshortfoulline&the‘2’line.Puckslocatedcompletelyin
the‘2’or‘3’areacount2pointsrespectively.
CHESS
Chessisaboardgamefortwopeople.Toplayyouneedthefollowing:Aboarddividedinto64squares,8
alongeachside(thesquaresarealternatelycolouredlight&dark)&asetof32chesspieces–2rooksor
castles,2knights,2bishops,aking,aqueen&8pawnsperplayer.Theboardshouldbesetupasshown:
TheObjectoftheGame–Aplayermustcapture(checkmate)theiropponent’sking.
ToPlay–Theplayerssitfacingeachotherwiththeboardpositionedsothateachplayerhasalight‐coloured
squareintheright‐handcorner.Tobeginthegametheplayerstossacoinforcolour(whitealwaysgoesfirst)
thenmoveinturn.Themovesforeachpieceare:
King–Onesquareinanydirection(forwards,backwards,sideways,diagonal)

thanaking,oftheplayer’schoice)
Apiecemayonlymoveinonedirectiononeachmove.Onlyonepiececanoccupyasquare&onlytheknight
mayjumpoveranotherpiece.Onlyapawnorknightmaymoveatthestartofthegame.
Whenakingisattackeditisin‘check’.Theplayerwhosekinghasbeencheckedmustgetitoutofcheckon
theirnextmovebyeithercapturingtheattackingpiece,placingoneoftheirpiecesbetweentheattacking

piece&theking,orbymovingtheirking.Iftheycan’tdothisthenthekingis‘checkmated’&thegameis
over.
CHECKERS
Checkersisaboardgamefortwopeople.Toplayyouneedthefollowing:Aboarddividedinto64squares
with8alongeachside(thesquaresarealternatelycolouredlight&dark–mostcommonlyred&black)&a
setof12piecesforeachplayer(oneseteachofdark&light).Theboardshouldbesetupasshown:
TheObjectoftheGame–Aplayermustcapturealltheiropponent’spiecesorpositiontheirownpiecesso
thattheiropponentisunabletomakeanymove.
TheBasics–Theplayerssitfacingeachotherwiththeboardpositionedsothateachplayerhasadark
squareattheleftendoftheirfirstrow.Eachplayerplacestheirpiecesinthedarksquaresofthefirstthree
rowsontheirsideoftheboard.Theplayerwiththedarkerpiecesalwaysmakesthefirstmove.Movesare
madediagonally&onlyonemovemaybemadeoneachturn.Youcanonlymoveyourplayerintoasquareif
itisvacant.
Ifoneofyourpiecesisnexttooneofyouropponent’spieces&thesquarebeyondisfree,thenyoumust
jumpoveryouropponent’spiecewhichisthenremovedfromtheboard(captured).Youcanjumpfrom
vacantsquaretovacantsquareseveraltimesinarowwiththesamepiece&captureseveralofyour
opponent’spieces.Onceapiecehasreachedthefarendoftheboarditbecomesaking(thisissignifiedby
stackingtwocheckersontopofeachother).Akingcanmove&jumpdiagonallybothforwards&backwards.
Kingscanbecapturedlikeanyotherpiece.
TheFinerPoints–Youmustmakeyourmovewiththefirstpiecethatyoutouchunlessyouhavegivennotice
thatyouintendtoarrangeyourpiecesproperlyintheirsquares.Ifyoutouchanunplayablepieceyou
receivea‘caution’&ifyoucommitasecondoffenseyouforfeitthegame.
Youmustmakeyourmovewithinfiveminutes.Ifyoufailtomoveanappointedtime‐keeperwillcall‘time’&
youthenhaveoneminutetomakeyourmoveoryouforfeitthegame.
BACKGAMMON
Backgammonisagamefortwoplayers.Toplayyouneedthefollowing:Abackgammonboard,30men(also
calledcheckers,stonesorcounters),atleastone(preferablytwo)pairsofdice,adicebox,andadoubling
cube(formoreadvancedgames).Theboardshouldbesetupasshown:

TheObjectoftheGame–Istomoveyourmensotheyallendupinyourinnertable.Youdothisbymoving
themaccordingtothenumbershownonthethrowoftwodice.Thepersonwhoremovesalltheirmenfrom
theboardfirst(called‘bearingoff’)wins.
TheBasics–Theboardisdividedinto24pointswith12pointsoneachside.Eachsideisdividedintoaninner
&outerboard&eachinnerorouterboardisdividedintotwosectionswitheachmadeupofsixpoints.The
orderofplayisdeterminedbyrollofonedie&theplayerwiththehighestnumbergoesfirst.Theplayer
thenmovestwomenusingthenumbersshownonthetwodice–theirown&theiropponent’s–usingeach
numberindividually,notintotal.Iftheplayerthrowsadoubletheymustmovefourtimesthevalueofthe
dice.Theplayerscontinuebythrowinginturn–eachusingtheirowndice.Bothnumbersoftherollmustbe
usedwheneverpossible.Iftheplayercannotmove,playpassestotheopponent.
TheFinerPoints–Youcantakeoneofyouropponent’ssinglemenonapoint(calleda‘blot’)&replaceit
withoneofyourown(calleda‘hit’).Iftherearetwoormoremenonasinglepointtheyaresafe&cannot
betaken(calleda‘blockedpoint’).Youropponentcan’tlandonablockedpointbuttheycanmoveoverit.
Whenamaniscapturedheisplacedonthebar(alsocalled‘jail’)&mustenteryouropponent’sinnertable
accordingtothenumberthrownoneitherdice.Youcan’tmoveanyofyourothermenuntilthisisdone.If
youcan’tenterbecausebothpointsareblockedthentheturnpassestoyouropponent.
Allofyourmenmustbeinyourinnertablebeforeyoucanstartbearingoff.Ifpossibleyoumustuseyour
entireroll.If,forexample,yourollafivebuthavenomenonyourfivepoint,youmusttakeamanoffthe
highestpointwhereyouhaveone.Ifamaninyourinnertableishitwhileyouarebearingoff,thatmanhas
togotothebar&re‐enter.Youcan’tcontinuebearingoffuntilyougetthismanbackintoyourinnertable.
TABLETENNIS
Scoring–Theplayer,ordoublesteam,whofirstscores21pointswinsthegame.Howeveryoumustwinby
twopointssoagamecouldgoonto30‐50pointsbeforebeingdecided.Amatchisusuallythebesttwoout
ofthreegames,&inInternationalChampionshipsitisthebestthreeoutoffivegames.Inotherwords,ifyou
losethefirstgameit’snottheendofthematch–winningthenextgamescanmakeyouthewinner.
ChoiceofEnds&Service–Flipacointochoosewhoserves&whoreceivesfromwhichend.Aftereachgame
youwillalternatetheends.Shouldtherebeatie,forinstance,onegametoonegame,thentheplayerswill
changeendsafterthefirstplayerreaches10pointsinthefinalgame.
TheServe–Standbehindyourendofthetable.Holdtheballinthepalmofyourfreehand&throwtheball
straightupintheair.Astheballfalls,hititsoitlandsonyourhalfofthetable,makesonebounce,&then
landsontheothersideofthetable.Iftheservetouchesthenet,itisa‘let’&youmustserveagain.Ifit

touchesthenet&landsonthefloor,youloseapoint.Iftheservegoesintothenetthenyoualsolosethe
point.Youserveuntilfivepointshavebeenscored&thentheotherplayergetstoserveforthenextfive
points.At20‐20(youmustwinbytwopoints)youalternatetheserveaftereachpoint.
TheServer–Theserveristheplayerwhostartsthegamebybeingthefirsttoputtheballintoplay.
TheReceiver–Thereceiveristheplayerwhoreceivestheballfromtheserver&returnsitoverthenet.If
youarethereceiverrememberthattheballmustnotbouncetwiceonyoursideofthetable&youcanhit
theballonlyoncetoreturnit.Trytohittheballonitshighestpeak&youwillhaveabetteranglehittingit
backontotheopponent’sside.Thereturnballcantouchthenet&stillgooverbutitcannotgointothenet
otherwiseyouwillloseapoint.Ifthereturningballtouchestheedgeofthetableonyouropponent’ssideit
stillcountsasin(aslongastheballhitstheedgewhilstdropping).Iftheballhitsthesideofthetabletopitis
notconsideredanedgeball&willnotcount.
WinaPoint–Youwinapointiftheopponentfailstoreturnyourshot.Yourshotcanhittheboundarylines
(whitelines)onyouropponent’ssideoreventheedgeofthetable&itisstillallowed.Yourservecanalso
hittheedge&beallowed.Youcanalsowinapointifyouhittheballoffthetablebutitlandsonyour
opponent’sbatbeforeittouchesthefloororwall.Thismayseemoddthatyoucanwinapointbymissing
thetablebutthisruleistopreventanyvolleyplay.
LoseaPoint–If,whenattemptingtoserveormakeareturn,youmisstheball.Ifyouhittheballintothe
net,includingthetopofthenet,&itcomesbacktoyoursideofthetable.Ifyouhittheballwideortoofar
sothefirstbouncehitsthefloororthewall.Ifyouhittheballbeforeitbouncesonyoursideofthetable(no
volleyisallowed).Iftheballbouncestwiceonyoursideofthetablebeforehittingit.Ifyoumovethetable
ortouchthenetduringplay.
Note:itisallowedtohittheballaroundthesideofthenettolandtheballonyouropponent’sside.
GLIDEHOCKEY
GlideHockeyisagamefortwoplayers.Toplayyouneedapuck&astrikerforeachplayer.
TheObjectoftheGame–Toscoreapredeterminednumberofpointsortoscorethemostpointsinagiven
periodoftime.
ToPlay–Flipacointodeterminewhowillbeginplay.Playbeginswhenthepuckisplacedontheplaying
surface.Playersmusthitthepuckwiththestriker&attempttoshootitintotheiropponent’sgoal.One
pointisawardedwhenapuckisshotintotheopponent’sgoal.
DOMINOES
ObjectoftheGame–Tobethefirstplayertoplayallthedominoesintheirhand.
GameRules–Shuffleallthedominoesfacedowntocreateapileknownasa‘boneyard’.Eachplayerdraws
therequirednumberofdominoesfromtheboneyard.Ina2‐playergameeachplayerdraws7dominoesto
createastartinghand.Withthreeormoreplayerseachplayershoulddraw5dominoes.Theplayerwiththe
highestdoubletilestartsthegame,normallythedoublesix.Oncethestartingplayerhassetadoubletilein
play,theirturnisover&playthenproceedsclockwisearoundthetable.
Eachplayermustplaceadominofromtheirhandontoamatchingendofthedominochaininplay.Ifa
playerisunabletoplayadominotheymustdrawfromtheboneyarduntiltheyareabletoplay.Ifthebone

yardisempty&theplayerisunabletoplay,theymustpassaturn.Ifallplayershavepassed,thegameends
&theplayerwiththelowestnumberofpointsisthewinner.
Scoring–Pointsaregiventoeachplayeraccordingtothetotalnumberofdotsonalltheunplacedtilesin
eachplayer’shand.Theplayerwiththelowestscoreisthewinner.
PICKUPSTICKS
ObjectoftheGame–Toscoreasmanypointsaspossibletowinthegame.
GameRules–Oneplayerholdsallthesticksuprightinonehandoveratable&openstheirhandquicklyso
thatthesticksscatteronthetable.Thesticksmaybethrownagainifthefirstthrowisbad.Thefirstplayer
triestopickupindividualstickswithoutmovinganyotherstick.Ifanotherstickmoves,theplayer’sturnis
over&thenextplayerbegins.WhentheMikado(blackstick)ispickedupitcanbeusedtohelpliftoffother
sticks.Whenallthestickshavebeenpickedupthepointsofthesticksareaddedup.Thewinneristheplayer
withthehighestscore.

‘playingfair’(everyonegetstheirownmarblesbackattheendofthegame).Drawacircleontheground.
Eachplayershouldputanagreednumberofmarblesinit&standbehindalinedrawnsomedistanceaway.
Theaimistohitthemarblesoutofthecircle.
Taketurnstoroll,throworflickamarble(calleda‘shooter’)intothecircle,tryingtohitthemarblesoutofit.
Ifyouknockamarbleoutofthecircleyougettokeepit.Iftheshooterstaysinthecircleitremainsthere&
it’sthenextplayer’sturn.Ifitcomesoutyoucanfetchit&haveanothergo.Carryonhavingturnsuntilall
themarblesinthecirclehavebeenwon.Thepersonwiththemostmarbleswins.

Eachplayerhasfourringswhichtheytossattheringposttotry&getthemtofallovertheuprightpole.The
gamecanbeplayedindividually,againstanotherplayeroraspartofateam.
HORSESHOES
Theobjectofthisgameistoringorthrowthehorseshoeasclosetothepostaspossible.Aringeriswhere
thehorseshoeencompassesthepost.Thegamecanbeplayedwithtwoorfourplayers.
TICTACTOE
(Noughts&Crosses)Thisisagamefor2players.Theplayerwhogoesfirstselectseitherthe‘Noughts’or
‘Crosses’.Thesepiecesareplacedontheboardinturnbyeachplayer&whoeverlinesup3piecesinarow
firstwins(vertically,horizontallyordiagonally).
POKERDICE
Throwallfivedice.Twofurtherthrowsareallowedtoachievethebestpossiblehand,changingasmanyor
asfewdiceaswished.

tenpointsplusthescorefromthenexttwoballsbowled.Ifaplayerscoresastrikeintheirfinalframethey
areallowedanextratwoballstocompletetheirbonus.Ifastrikeisachievedineveryframe&withboth
bonusballs,themaximumscoreof300isachieved.
Aspareisscoredwhenaplayerknocksdownalltenpinswithbothballsinaframe(thisincludesknocking
downalltenpinswiththesecondballoftheframe).Asparescorestenpointsplusthescorefromthenext
ballbowled.Ifaplayerscoresaspareintheirfinalframetheyareallowedoneextraballtocompletetheir
bonus.

501&301–Eachplayerstartswithascoreof501&takesturnstothrow3darts.Thescorefromeachturnis
