* After 1 week, check all bolts and tighten if necessary *
To assist with planning your playground maintenance is a suggested timetable below and checklist
form is enclosed for your Miracle purchased equipment.
Recommended Maintenance Schedule
Weekly Monthly Quarterly
Moving parts Metal equipment Footings
Wear items – chain, links,
bearings Timber components
and Fasteners Insect infestation
Undersurface level, cleanliness
and note exit points Slide surfaces Sandpit edging integrity
Bolt tightness Undersurface depth
Chains Plastic product integrity
Ongoing Maintenance
A visual inspection of the playground should be undertaken at every opportunity. As a minimum this
should occur on a weekly basis and should take no longer than a few minutes.
Particular items that should be checked are as follows:
1) Check all fasteners to ensure that they are tight.
2) Check for any damage to equipment resulting from vandalism.
3) Check all wear parts (moving parts) such as chains, split links, shackles, bearings, bushes and
hand rings to ensure that they have not worn beyond acceptable tolerances. As a rule of
thumb, any part worn beyond 50% of the material thickness should be replaced immediately.
4) Check coil springs and ensure spring clamps and bolts are tight.
5) Check swing seats for protruding metal reinforcing or cuts that may become pinch points.
6) Check slides for damage of any kind to sliding surface.
In addition to the above, a general playground safety check should also include the following
items as a minimum:
1) Softfall should be checked for contamination from debris of any kind, decomposing leaves or
foreign matter, syringes and animal droppings.
2) Check that softfall is adequate.
3) Check that there are no exposed concrete footings or rocks in the play area.
4) Check that the softfall in adequately drained.
5) Ensure that wherever possible shade, or some protection from the sun, is provided in play
areas.
6) Softfall for playgrounds is often retained with timber edging its integrity should be checked.
The above assumes the correct installation of the equipment initially, and the recommendations
made are a guide only. Local factors such as weather, climatic conditions and exposure of the
playground to items such as vandalism should also be taken into account.
