WEED BURNERS
___________________________________________________________________________
PIRO 1 –PIRO FLAM
INSTRUCTION MANUAL
Please read carefully these instructions before using your weed burner.
Before you use your weed burner for the first time, you should take a moment to become familiar with
your local laws regarding the ownership and use of the device.
It’s most important that you feel comfortable with the burner and its controls.
A weed burner can be dangerous. It is an exposed flame so, if not used properly, it can cause serious
damages. There are some precautions to follow. Don’t work during dry or windy conditions or around
flammable materials where you might start a fire. Always inspect your equipment to make sure the
fittings are tight and there are no leaks.
Always survey the area before using the weedburner and remove all flammable material as much as
possible. Dry leaves and dry grass are generally the biggest flame risk, so remove as much of this debris
before use.
Never change the original conception of your weedburner without the agreement of the manufacturer.
Do not use the machine inside.

2
Do not use non-original accessories and/or spare parts not specifically intended for the model in
question.
Do not let children to approach to the machine and use it also when the machine is off.
Keep always a fire extinguisher and water supply close in case of an emergency. The PIRO 2B is already
provided with a fire extinguisher.
For any other instructions of use, safety and storage regarding the gas bottle, please read carefully the
instruction manual of the manufacturer of the gas bottle.
Where do we use it
Your weed burner is a very effective tool at destroying unwanted plant foliage without the use of chemical
herbicides and it can also be used for soil disinfection in areas where livestock needs to be protected
including kennels and stables.
Weed burning is best suited for areas such as gravel walks or drives, sidewalks or patio cracks, fence
lines or other open areas for total weed clearance or for selective or spot treatments for example in
paddocks.
It is important to remember when flaming in and around unwanted plants that heating those leaves can
cause damage as well, so be careful around flowers and shrubs - particularly evergreens.
Conifers are very flammable and should be avoided. Always allow a safe distance between the flame and
unwanted plants, shrubs and trees.
Poison ivy, oak or any poisonous plant should be avoided also- the smoke from flamed leaves will cause a
rash to your skin, eyes and lungs!
You can use the weed burner to sterilize soil or rid infested areas of weed seeds or it also a good
alternative to salt to melt dangerous ice patches (sidewalks) in winter. Especially useful in
environmentally sensitive areas or in places with open public access. No need to quarantine your area as
required after using chemicals to kill weeds. Your children, pets and livestock can use the areas
immediately after weed wilting by your PIRO weed burner.
How do we use it
The weed burner is not to burn the plant foliage, but to slightly cook it.
The flame should pass lightly over the leaf area to be treated without incinerating the plant. This will
cause a boiling of the plant cell structure. The larger the flame, the larger the killing area.
When the flame initially makes contact with the foliage, you may see steam rise from the plant. The plant
may also wilt or change colour. This is the sign that the foliage is destroyed. You can check the progress
of the over all kill by pressing some foliage between your thumb and fore finger. This should leave an
impression and will be darker than the rest of the leaf.
After one or two days you will notice a deepening of the leaf colouration and then a yellowing and a
gradual drying out of the plant.
If the area is treated early in the growing season it is possible to achieve a complete eradication of the
unwanted vegetation. At other times of the year or with particularly stubborn weeds repeat treatments
might be required.
Description of the appliance

3
The PIRO trolley system comprises:
-An extremely robust steel frame on solid rubber wheels
-An ample support plate for a 13 Kg. bottle (NOT SUPPLIED) with a retaining strap
-A long lance with protective flame shroud and 5 m of gas hose
The system includes a propane bottle adaptor and a manual gas ignition lighter.
Pressure can be regulated to a maximum of 1.5 BAR from the hand lance.
Pre-fire preparation
Before you light your weed burner, make sure that:
- the bottles contain PROPANE gas.
- the flame doesn’t get in touch with any electrical materials and/or flammable.
- the work you are going to make cannot cause or start a fire (you will check for example that the soil is
sufficiently wet).
- the bottle is in a stable position and there is no risk of overlapping.
- all the connections are tight and sealed by mean of a 27mm spanner.
- the hose couplings have a locking clamp and do not leak.
- the hose is not cut or burnt.
- the valve is closed.
- the lance is properly fixed to the hose. The locking will be made by mean of a flat spanner.
Starting the appliance
Put the appliance on a flat surface in a stable position and tight the bottle to the frame by means of the
provided retaining straps.
Fix the gas regulator on the bottle and tight the hexagonal nut with a spanner of 27mm (inverse thread).
Make sure that the gasket is present.
Close the valve on the handle if it is open.
Screw the lance on the handle screwing the nut with moderation.
Open of a quarter of turn the valve of the bottle.
The weed burner is supplied with a gas regulator fixed and it leaves the workshop with a pressure
adjusted at 1,5 BAR
Turn the valve placed on the lance of a half tour anticlockwise.
Open gently the lance and release the air inside the hose.

4
Close the lever. The appliance has an automatic trigger action pilot light; this allows you to leave the pilot
light running all the time you’re using the unit.
Light the lance with the ignition lighter and direct the flame towards the ground.
Push on the trigger to start working.
Turn the regulator valve to adjust the flame intensity.
-To increase the output turn anticlockwise
-To reduce the output turn clockwise
After the use of the weed burner, make sure that:
- any damages occurred to the appliance (check hoses, connections and seals)
- the valve is closed perfectly.
- all the gas inside the hoses has been burnt or cleared out.
- the storage place will not cause any damages to the appliance. Specially, you will make sure that the
temperature is less than 40°C and sheltered from sun and that the level of dust is very low.
- the hot parts of the machine do not cause any damage to the storage place.
How to stop the appliance
- close the valve of the bottle
- wait until the flame died out for the complete emptying of the circuit.
- close the upper valve on the handle
- roll up the hose and put the lance in the lance holder
Maintenance
Your weed burner doesn’t require any special maintenance.
The burner head of the lance can get clogged. If this is the case, you need to dismount it and blow in the
contrary direction of the gas passage.
Do not use any metal tools for this operation.
If the output of the lance is still not proper after blowing, you will need to replace the gas head with a
new one (ask your dealer).
Fault finding
Flame unstable or absence of output

5
The gas head is clogged. Disassemble the lance from the handle and unscrew the gas head with a
spanner and blow in the contrary direction of the gas passage. Do not use any metal tool for this
operation. If the lance doesn’t deliver even after this operation, you need to replace the gas
head. If the flame dies out during use, come back to the pilot light position and light again.
Low power
The safety valve of the bottle can sometimes reduce the output. Close the regulating valve on the
handle and open it again gently. Adjust the pilot light to a higher lever and push more times on
the trigger to check that this is not due to an excess of gas filling up.
Loss of pressure
To get the most durable performance, it is recommended to work with a low working pressure
and change regularly the gas bottle. At 1.5 bars the duration of the continuous usage is 2 hrs
with a 13 kg bottle. You need to change bottle if you want to have a constant deliver.
The flywheel of the valve is locked
If on delivery the flywheel is locked in the open position, turn it with force anticlockwise. This is
coming from the operative checking process of the manufacturer.
Trigger is locked
When the flywheel is completely closed, the trigger is inoperative for safety reasons. Open the
valve to operate it.
If for any other reasons your sprayer is not working correctly, please contact your supplier.
